Dish or plate? English vocabulary and prototype theory
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лют 2019
- We received a great question from a viewer: What's the difference between a plate and a dish in English? (In some languages there's just one word.)
It's not a simple answer because the meanings of words often overlap.
In this English lesson we explain when we say dish or plate and look at the features of:
- plates, dishes, cups, mugs and bowls
- different kinds of games
We show how the meanings of words can be fuzzy at the edges and it leads us to prototype theory in linguistics.
We draw on the work of two different writers:
- the philosopher Wittgenstein and his work on words that share a family resemblance
- the psychologist Eleanor Rosch and prototype theory
If you're interested in this topic, another great book to read is 'Words in the Mind' by Jean Aitchison. She explores how we store words in our brain.

I think it's important to note that the word "dish" is also a general term for things we use to eat from and that's why we have "dishwashers".
Great point Elisheva. Thanks for chipping in. :-)
The most enjoyable and helpful 10 minutes of my evening😊 Thank you!
Olga, we're so glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for letting us know and thank you for watching.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos God day to both of you! I've a good idea! What if u tought the english language 4 foreigner people through different topic please? You, as i remember, perhaps mrj said, that some of you, you ms Vicky oryou mr J, you said, that u speak french n spanish too! What if you touhjt NOT ONLY ENGLISH? I prefer spanish rather than french. If i am honest, i don't like french. This language is ugly 4 me. But spanish is good! As i know, spanish is necessary to learn for american children please! It is duty for them. "Yes, we know it" please. Y do i say that please! I think, maybe u heard about the soviet era, da eastern block, communism and socialism please. In da countries of Eastern Europe, such as Hungary of course, Chechslovakia, Jugoslavia n Poland, children had to learn russian please! Except for Romania and perhaps Bulgaria BUT I:M NOT SURE IN THAT PLEASE! CEAUSESCU SAID OK COMBRADES, I LIKE FRANCE, THA FRENCH CULTURE, N FRENCH FOODS VERY MUCH PLEASE, SO YOU:LL LEARN FRENCH! HIS BULGARIAN COLLEAGUE, ZHIFKOV, PERHAPS THEY LWARNT RUSSIAN BUT THEY LEARNT FRENCH TOO! BECAUSE I SAW A REPORT WITH ZHIFKOV. THE ASSHOLE SPOKE FRENCH IN THE INTERVIEW. N I saw an other report as well. It spoke about a famouse event. I dont know how, 2 bulgarian women, were in Libya. We know that Libya also had a famous dictator unfortunately. It was muamar al-kaddafi.... Some agents of kadafi had kidnapped these bulgarian women. They said, they live in Ruseh, o with FRENCH WRITING, ROUSSE... The agents asked them in different langjages, french, arabic, and a little bit english. They hit them with electricity, because they didn't understand the terrorists. After a while, one of the terrorist asked them in french. They answered. But in the interview, both of them spoke bulgarian.... Sometimes they spoke french too. They said, the libian terrorist always hurted them.
you're lovely

Wow, wow and wow! A vocabulary lesson with scientific evidence. That's amazing. Only Simple English Videos to accomplish that. Thanks a million.
Yes, Rafael. This is Jay writing back to you. Vicki does a lot of research when it comes to the language points we make in our videos. Evidence is really important.
I’m a native English speaker (South African English) and yet I often catch myself watching your videos because they are so informative and surprisingly relaxing! Thank you both, and keep them coming! 😃
Hi Mike, Jay here. We are very pleased that so many native speakers like yourself have joined out community. Thank you for being here and letting us know you like the videos.
In Vietnam, we only have one word for dish & plate so I have to be conscious of my 'dish or plate' task when cooking with my Western friends. I prefer the way my mom often describes which food she gonna serve or the size of the dish/plate she wants. She's the expert of dish & plate and that was very helpful for me to pick the right one :)
Last but not least, thank you for another wonderful video
Mai Pham, it sounds like you have an excellent guide when it comes to dishes and plates. And thank you for the lovely compliment. Take good care and thanks for watching.
Thanks for your vídeos!! I love the way you teach us, not natives! You are kind and I feel I am learning and also having fun!!

Vicki and Jay: I love watching your videos as they help me to continue to learn English as a FIRST language! I've learned I was so ignorant being raised in Missouri. I called mugs and cups..cups. You both have helped me learn that English is a differing, growing and vibrant language..and that in most instances, other English speakers will understand us. But you also teach your viewers that some standardization is important. As an American..I love Vicki's accent!..and Jay often appears to be the usual 'American'..but all in good fun! :)
All in good fun, indeed! This is Jay writing back to you disoriented1. We're so glad you've found our channel useful. Vicki's the English guru in our household, and like you, I'm constantly learning things. Thanks so much for writing to us and thanks for watching.

Simple English Videos A! Are you married? R u husbandn wife? Well i'm learning german as well... The german has two words in this case as well! But i've forgotten one of them... Plate is (der) teller.... Not schlüßel because it's key in english! The article is also der...
Hallo there @@akoska! ^_^
I'm from Germany and we say "Teller" for "plate" and "Schüssel" for "bowl".
And you're right! ♥ With a "Schlüssel" (not a "Schüssel" ^_^) we open and lock our doors. German seems to be tough to learn! Keep going! ♥
Great video! Congrats!
So glad you liked it Saulo. :-)
I had to give a lesson in English class, in English of course. It did not matter what subject you chose, but I opted for a language related topic. Namely accents. It went incredibly well, partially through all of your videos. One of the only negative things was that I had spend pretty much all of the course with my lesson, whereas it actually should have been half a lesson LOL. Thank you ever so much for the time and effort you put into improving the English skills of a lot of English learners around the world. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Job, that's so rewarding for us to hear. We're very pleased our videos have been so useful for you. And thank you for watching.
so creative and practical, thanks for your great effort
We're very pleased you found this video useful, Kevin. Thanks for letting us know and thank you for watching.
That nuance is a little tricky because I would have called Vicki's coffee mug a mug.
I consider mugs thick and in various sizes depending on how much you want to drink. Tea cups with saucers are thin and brittle looking and generally more fancy.
Thanks for chipping in with this helpful observation, Kyoumi. Yes, cups are often thinner and more fancy - less thick than mugs.
WOooow, amazing video as always. Thanks a lot..
So glad you liked it ahmed. :-)

Thank you so much for making these videos 😊❤❤❤
You're very welcome Sammy. and thanks for watching them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the section on plates, bowls, dishes and so forth! I feel you should have shown a *basin*, too, so that you could argue about when a basin is, or is not, a deep bowl... As you make clear, there are wide zones of overlap, and function as well as form plays a part. Incidentally, I would definitely call the tall, handled coffee-cup a mug, in spite of its curved profile.
Can you imagine the endless debate we archaeologists have on precisely these points of terminology? And when we need to translate archaeological texts into or out of another language, it becomes even more of a challenge, because even in closely related languages like German, the (fuzzy) dividing lines between definitions may not fall quite where they do in English.
Thanks so much for this response AgTigress. What a challenge it must be for archaeologists! Thanks so much for sharing that. I sometimes wonder about the company IKEA and how they must struggle to find words for forms and functions that will be understood across different countries and cultures. Maybe that's why they have such strange product line names! :-)

Thank you Vicki and Jay! I have already watched this video twice.
I think the word dish predominates: you say to do the dishes and not to do the plates. We say dishwasher and not platewasher.
Also, I believe dish comprises of everything: plates, glasses, cups, bowls, saucers etc, but I could be wrong, whilst plate refers to only the flat round plate or also the soup plate.
When we're describing objects, I think you're right Aurum. But over at the ngram viewer it looks like plate is more frequent: books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=plate%2Cdish&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cplate%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cdish%3B%2Cc0

Thanks a lot! I thought that in English I said dish to food or typical food so I didn't recognised what the difference between a dish and a plate was. In my language that is Spanish we say "Plato" to refer to a dish or a plate. You resolved all my uncertainlies.

Excellent video, thank you!! I'd say here rufous-collared sparrow and great kiskadees are the "birdiest of birds" :-D
BTW, funny word "game"! On top of it all, in Spanish (at least in Argentina) we call a set of things (like... bed sheets, or cups, or keys) with the same word as "game". E.g. "Un juego de sábanas".
Analyzing languages is so interesting...
A hug for you guys!
Oh that is interesting. Thanks for sharing that Cau. :-)
Hihihihi! Ooooh how I love Friday nights with another new video! ♥
The hell! How many kinds of cups and mugs are actually out there? 😂We Germans keep it simple by saying "Tasse" to everything from which we drink our coffee 😂
You know - I'm working as a service specialist and as a woman wo loves to cook with not more than three pots, one pan and just a few other things in my kitchen cupboard, I was overwhelmed how many kitchen stuff we have to know and use at work.
French plates, English plates, medium-sized plates, desser plates, cake plates, bread knives, fish knives, dinner knives, teaspoons, soup spoons, dessert spoons.... I could continue, but I think no one but the professional service agents actually do care about all of these names.
Usually I just eat from whatever with whatever I find! 😂
AND I LOVE THAT YOU ALWAYS INTEGRATE THE LINGUISTIC BACKGROUND 😍The research of meaning in language! I loved those lectures so much! I do remember the prototype theory and cognitive categorization even though quite an amount of years have passed already 🙈
We also discussed the question about the "birdiest bird" in a lecture and even though we all spoke the same language, the answers differed enormously - from swallow, to woodpecker, to doves. Some grew up in a huge city and hadn't even seen another bird as a dove. Others grew up in smaller towns or in the country. Our brains learn under the conditions we grow up, don't they? ^_^
Thank you once again for sharing all these fascinating information in another great video! ♥
Sending you both a waaaaaaaaaaaarm hug from Germany ♥
OH MY GOD!!! 😱 I'm so sorry for blabbering😖
Hi again Steffi! I don't even know what species my prototype bird is, lol...
Hey there@@Srum31 😋
Just say "a penguin" and let the discussions begin 😂
🤣
Hi Steffi, I hesitated about adding the linguistics stuff because I wasn't sure anyone would like it so it's great to hear you did.
And yeah, there's another set of linguistics research that this could relate to - Whorf's idea that our language shapes our view of the world.
thank you! now I know the difference!! 😁
That's great to hear Jose. Thanks for writing. :-)
Love this video 💖 May be I am not that perfect in English but yeah I have a suggestion- a person should look at different sentences where this types of words are used , that may help a lot.
That's a great tip Time Over. Thank you.
👏👏👏 thank you
You're so welcome Italiana Toli. :-)
Yep, an idea guys..... words spelt with ea & ee & i. BTW thanks for the great video content.
Hi Martin, thanks for the suggestion and thank you for the kind words.
Hi and thank you for a nice video! There may be something more than mere functionality or form that can explain the difference between a cup and a mug. To me mugs are more rustic and cups are more refined.
I've always said "silverware" while referring to forks, knifes and spoons. Then I started working with gastronomy in Europe and they'd say "cutlery" and I had no idea what was that about
Oh yes. Thanks for this Tarsila. I had the experience the other way around. I had to learn to stop saying cutlery when I came to the US and call it silverware instead.
After 5 seconds of watching I hit the subscribe button.
Wow that was fast! Thanks so much jet lamkona. So glad you liked it and welcome to our channel.
- Can you give me the mug, love?
- Which one?
- The one that looks like a cup...
- That one?
- No, that's a bowl with a handle.
- Isn't it a dish?
- Oh forget it. I will go get a takeaway coffee.
- From where?
- The cafe at the corner.
- But that's a cafe-bar!
- It's a CAFE-RESTAURANT !!
Yes, Captaingeek. I think you've got the difficulty in identifying these descriptions just right :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos E V E R Y single day...Not to mention the differences between American and British English...
- Pants...
- Do you mean trousers??
Could you make a video about the differences between other and another?
they are just used in different times like, will you buy another table? will you get the other one? or listen to this, is the another one better? is other one better? see, they just have to be used differently, even i struggled thinking of the sentences
Hi Murazi. As I exepct you know, this question relates to when we use a definite article, an indefinite article or no article. The answer is quite complicated and I haven't made a video about it yet I'm afraid, but it is on our list.
It is confusing and you make more confuse .lol love you .
For dish vs plate (as the object often made of ceramics, pottery, metal, etc., not the food), I think of dishes as something that's generally flat but needs to be able to hold food, so usually there's an edge on it. A plate can be totally flat and decorative. (Although I have seen painted dishes that are also placed in china cabinets for decorative purposes... though that's true of any dishware.) Basically, you should be able to use dishes to hold food, but that's not required of plates. I have no idea if this is the common consensus, though!
Definitely Size matters guys 😉
Keep up the good work
Ha! Thanks Samir. :-)
What a nice channel , that's a great content !
Thanks for the kind words, Otavio. And thanks for watching our video.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos So happy that you answered me LOL you're welcome
Ooh, I have a fun idea for a video! You could talk about the difference between the simple form of a verb, and the "did" form: like "I talked to him" versus "I did talk to him." It seems to be confusing for non-native speakers (I definitely understand why!)
Thanks for the idea Kayla.
Thank you so much for this interesting video , my birdest bird is sparrow , thanks again and have a nice day .
Ah, another sparrow to add to the list. Thanks for letting us know , هادي مياح
I don't now all these crazy names of "table equipment" even in russian. Thanks for the lesson, fun enough :)
Максим Карпук , we're so glad you enjoyed he video. Thank you so much for letting us know and thanks for watching.
Very interesting stuff about semantics; I've enjoyed your presentation. But, if I may ask, what is the prototype expression for these words: pass, hand, sell, pay, lend, serve, feed, award?
Hi Mitkom. I'm afraid i'm not sure how anyone could set about working that out.
I've never thought naming all of it would be so tricky😛
Hi ma sz. Jay here. I was pretty surprised as well. It was very interesting to me too. Thanks for watching.
Native English speaker here and I really enjoyed this, both the presenters and the topic of prototypes.
As inedible nouns, I would have said that a plate is flat, a dish has raised edges, but is shallow and can be round, for pies, or rectangular for lasagne, and a bowl is deeper than a dish.
As a bug bear, I shiver when I hear natives call seats on buses and trains "chairs". 😀
Hi Though for the Day. I thank you've exactly understood the point that some word definitions overlap :-) Thanks for watching.
Hi dears teachers! thanks so much for useful video.you are great always. * please make a video about different personalities .for example head strong, jealous ..... I dont know about them. thank you.
