Dish or plate? English vocabulary and prototype theory

  • We received a great question from a viewer: What's the difference between a plate and a dish in English? (In some languages there's just one word.)
It's not a simple answer because the meanings of words often overlap.
In this English lesson we explain when we say dish or plate and look at the features of:
    - plates, dishes, cups, mugs and bowls
    - different kinds of games
We show how the meanings of words can be fuzzy at the edges and it leads us to prototype theory in linguistics.
We draw on the work of two different writers:
    - the philosopher Wittgenstein and his work on words that share a family resemblance
    - the psychologist Eleanor Rosch and prototype theory
If you're interested in this topic, another great book to read is 'Words in the Mind' by Jean Aitchison. She explores how we store words in our brain.

I think it's important to note that the word "dish" is also a general term for things we use to eat from and that's why we have "dishwashers".

@@SimpleEnglishVideos God day to both of you! I've a good idea! What if u tought the english language 4 foreigner people through different topic please? You, as i remember, perhaps mrj said, that some of you, you ms Vicky oryou mr J, you said, that u speak french n spanish too! What if you touhjt NOT ONLY ENGLISH? I prefer spanish rather than french. If i am honest, i don't like french. This language is ugly 4 me. But spanish is good! As i know, spanish is necessary to learn for american children please! It is duty for them. "Yes, we know it" please. Y do i say that please! I think, maybe u heard about the soviet era, da eastern block, communism and socialism please. In da countries of Eastern Europe, such as Hungary of course, Chechslovakia, Jugoslavia n Poland, children had to learn russian please! Except for Romania and perhaps Bulgaria BUT I:M NOT SURE IN THAT PLEASE! CEAUSESCU SAID OK COMBRADES, I LIKE FRANCE, THA FRENCH CULTURE, N FRENCH FOODS VERY MUCH PLEASE, SO YOU:LL LEARN FRENCH! HIS BULGARIAN COLLEAGUE, ZHIFKOV, PERHAPS THEY LWARNT RUSSIAN BUT THEY LEARNT FRENCH TOO! BECAUSE I SAW A REPORT WITH ZHIFKOV. THE ASSHOLE SPOKE FRENCH IN THE INTERVIEW. N I saw an other report as well. It spoke about a famouse event. I dont know how, 2 bulgarian women, were in Libya. We know that Libya also had a famous dictator unfortunately. It was muamar al-kaddafi.... Some agents of kadafi had kidnapped these bulgarian women. They said, they live in Ruseh, o with FRENCH WRITING, ROUSSE... The agents asked them in different langjages, french, arabic, and a little bit english. They hit them with electricity, because they didn't understand the terrorists. After a while, one of the terrorist asked them in french. They answered. But in the interview, both of them spoke bulgarian.... Sometimes they spoke french too. They said, the libian terrorist always hurted them.

In Vietnam, we only have one word for dish & plate so I have to be conscious of my 'dish or plate' task when cooking with my Western friends. I prefer the way my mom often describes which food she gonna serve or the size of the dish/plate she wants. She's the expert of dish & plate and that was very helpful for me to pick the right one :)
Last but not least, thank you for another wonderful video

I had to give a lesson in English class, in English of course. It did not matter what subject you chose, but I opted for a language related topic. Namely accents. It went incredibly well, partially through all of your videos. One of the only negative things was that I had spend pretty much all of the course with my lesson, whereas it actually should have been half a lesson LOL. That nuance is a little tricky because I would have called Vicki's coffee mug a mug.
I consider mugs thick and in various sizes depending on how much you want to drink. Tea cups with saucers are thin and brittle looking and generally more fancy.

I thoroughly enjoyed the section on plates, bowls, dishes and so forth! I feel you should have shown a *basin*, too, so that you could argue about when a basin is, or is not, a deep bowl... As you make clear, there are wide zones of overlap, and function as well as form plays a part. Incidentally, I would definitely call the tall, handled coffee-cup a mug, in spite of its curved profile.
Can you imagine the endless debate we archaeologists have on precisely these points of terminology? And when we need to translate archaeological texts into or out of another language, it becomes even more of a challenge, because even in closely related languages like German, the (fuzzy) dividing lines between definitions may not fall quite where they do in English.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 років тому +1

Thanks so much for this response AgTigress. What a challenge it must be for archaeologists! Thanks so much for sharing that. I sometimes wonder about the company IKEA and how they must struggle to find words for forms and functions that will be understood across different countries and cultures. Maybe that's why they have such strange product line names! :-)

Thank you Vicki and Jay! I have already watched this video twice.
I think the word dish predominates: you say to do the dishes and not to do the plates. We say dishwasher and not platewasher.
Also, I believe dish comprises of everything: plates, glasses, cups, bowls, saucers etc, but I could be wrong, whilst plate refers to only the flat round plate or also the soup plate.

Thanks a lot! I thought that in English I said dish to food or typical food so I didn't recognised what the difference between a dish and a plate was. In my language that is Spanish we say "Plato" to refer to a dish or a plate. You resolved all my uncertainlies.

Excellent video, thank you!! I'd say here rufous-collared sparrow and great kiskadees are the "birdiest of birds" :-D
BTW, funny word "game"! On top of it all, in Spanish (at least in Argentina) we call a set of things (like... bed sheets, or cups, or keys) with the same word as "game". E.g. "Un juego de sábanas".
    Analyzing languages is so interesting...

Hihihihi! Ooooh how I love Friday nights with another new video! ♥
The hell! How many kinds of cups and mugs are actually out there? 😂We Germans keep it simple by saying "Tasse" to everything from which we drink our coffee 😂
You know - I'm working as a service specialist and as a woman wo loves to cook with not more than three pots, one pan and just a few other things in my kitchen cupboard, I was overwhelmed how many kitchen stuff we have to know and use at work.
French plates, English plates, medium-sized plates, desser plates, cake plates, bread knives, fish knives, dinner knives, teaspoons, soup spoons, dessert spoons.... I could continue, but I think no one but the professional service agents actually do care about all of these names.
Usually I just eat from whatever with whatever I find! 😂
AND I LOVE THAT YOU ALWAYS INTEGRATE THE LINGUISTIC BACKGROUND 😍The research of meaning in language! I loved those lectures so much! I do remember the prototype theory and cognitive categorization even though quite an amount of years have passed already 🙈
We also discussed the question about the "birdiest bird" in a lecture and even though we all spoke the same language, the answers differed enormously - from swallow, to woodpecker, to doves. Some grew up in a huge city and hadn't even seen another bird as a dove. Others grew up in smaller towns or in the country. Our brains learn under the conditions we grow up, don't they? ^_^
Thank you once again for sharing all these fascinating information in another great video! ♥
Sending you both a waaaaaaaaaaaarm hug from Germany ♥

For dish vs plate (as the object often made of ceramics, pottery, metal, etc., not the food), I think of dishes as something that's generally flat but needs to be able to hold food, so usually there's an edge on it. A plate can be totally flat and decorative. (Although I have seen painted dishes that are also placed in china cabinets for decorative purposes... though that's true of any dishware.) Basically, you should be able to use dishes to hold food, but that's not required of plates. I have no idea if this is the common consensus, though!

Native English speaker here and I really enjoyed this, both the presenters and the topic of prototypes.
As inedible nouns, I would have said that a plate is flat, a dish has raised edges, but is shallow and can be round, for pies, or rectangular for lasagne, and a bowl is deeper than a dish.
As a bug bear, I shiver when I hear natives call seats on buses and trains "chairs". 😀
