- How to Fix Stretched and Disconnected Inner CV Axle Joint - axle pull out and get out of wack? This is the most time/cost effective way of doing this. Time = Money so I opted to fix this by visually inspecting (which is a good time to make sure you have plenty of grease in there to prevent premature wear) and it only costs $1.50 per stainless strap at your local auto parts store to replace it.

Thank you so much for this video. I pulled too hard on a brand new axle to see if the spring clip had locked and pulled that sucker out. Thanks to you video, I got it back in, and I was even able to reuse the band clamp.

I over extended my CV axle some time while I was replacing my upper and lower control arms.
I thought my inner CV joint was fucked. The boot was all squished, and it was binding and wouldn't allow me to tilt my hub assembly back up so I could get my upper ball joint in. I gave up and went to bed, planning on running to the parts store and picking up a new CV axle first thing in the morning.
While laying in bed and trying to find a video showing a similar failure of an inner CV joint, I happend to come across your video (which seems like it's the only one out there talking about over extending that inner joint) and I immediately realized this is what I had done. I actually got up out of bed and in 5 minutes was actually able to put the joint back together without having to remove the boot. Simple outward pressure to straighten out those bearings and they popped right into their respective grooves and the joint sucked itself back together.
Saved myself another trip to the store and $225. Thank you!!

As others mentioned, if the bearings aren't loose you should be able to manipulate them one at a time through the boot and get them lined up with the chase. You have to put outward pressure (towards the boot) on the bearing so you have to kind of grab the bearing through the boot and pull toward yourself. Thanks for the video though because I don't see anyone else addressing this topic.

In theory yes. I had the axle out for the video as it was easy for me to put the other end back in but should not make any difference as the other end has its own separate joint.
4 years later and you are still helping people. I pulled the joint apart during a ball joint replacement and the convinced me to rebuild it myself.

Like an idiot, I overextended my new axle as I was putting suspension back together and I couldn't get the inner cv joint back in. at 2:01 you mentioned putting outward pressure on the rollers. YES!!!! I was able to do that through the boot and never had to take it apart. slid right in. I owe the next hour saved to your video, thank you!!!

I don't understand what he did, could you please help explain? So basically the joint got separated and he just plugged it back in?
I'm asking because I had a problem after I removed the axle for a bearing replacement, put the axle back in and the car started clattering around the parking lot /low speed turns. I've just installed a replacement shaft and thankfully the issue is gone. But I'm wondering what happened. I guess I've overstretched the axle when I was removing it?
Not sure what happened in your case, but what you described is what happened to me
@@theFINALc0untdown as far as I can understand, there are small shims built in by factory, inhibiting the joint to fall out. I guess at some point when I stretched the axle, they wore out or something and then the joint can fall out when you turn the steering wheel. Still I don't understand what this guy accomplished by just putting the shaft back together 😅
By outward they mean to get your fingers behind the bearing and pry them towards the end of the spindle they ride it, making the three bearing as far as they can be from the center. Took me about 5 seconds to get mine fixed after watching this. Thanks a million

honestly hope it helps others in your situation. logic tells you that you have to put the components either far inward or outward, when it's quite the contrary when you examine the internals
I did it and I'm a happy camper :-) I made this miss when I was installing lowering struts and stretched the CV axle. So I got a boot kit from VW for $45 (for a 2012 Tiguan) and got the CV axle out, which was a pain in the b***, I had to use a pry bar and a screwdriver on the inner CV boot until my arms are numbed to get it out of the transmission, once out I had to cut the ears of the straps with a power grinder as they are too thick for a cutter, then cut the boot out and followed your procedure. There was a fallen out of place tripod ring which i had to tap into place with a hammer, put secure ring on, then grease, then muscle the cover back in, I used a special ear crimper for the straps, one time crimper use what a waste. Total cost $74 with the crimper and lots of sweat :-) Big salute to you man. Cheers

So if I got a new cv joint and it’s shorter by 1 1/4” would this mean the old one disconnected and came out? I can’t move it freely like you did
That is a possibility. Sometimes parts stores hand over the incorrect part too so I'd double check that before assuming you have the right part though.
Very helpful video, especially the tip about pulling the rollers outward to help them into place. I was able to fix a brand-new axle/joint without opening it up, thanks to that tip.

Pulled the engine on my 06 Envoy for a rebuild, had to drop the suspension to get the intermediate shaft out of the oil pan tunnel. Both CV axles separated on disassembly. Thank you for assuring me it will go back together without issue 👍

I'm not sure of all model vehicles but most often the bearing have c lock to keep it in place and also a bigger c ring/ look to keep the axel shaft cv unit from coming off the cv cup.

That grease looking tan colored means it was full of moisture. This was what I was looking for thought on how the inner goes together since I have one separated and never have taken the boots off to see what is going on.

so my 2015 wrx has play on both sides, is this normal????? i was going to pay a tech to replace the rubber seals cuz it was leaking, and he said he couldnt because he found some play in the bearings

it seems like people are able to connect it back on without having to take the cv axle out. I've been rotating the rotor trying to connect it back, but it always slips out when I try to spin it again. Can you please explain what you mean by "outward pressure"?
Sure. Basically you've got bearing races that sit on a shaft. These can move in and outward freely. These bearings sit in a slot which allows the ability for the axle end to retain it's flexibility is the best way I can compare it.
You can see this very clearly by removing the boot, regressing, and replacing the strap.
You may also be able to resolve this by feel, but I am sure there are instances where it may have been pulled too far out or has been played with too much to where things are now fallen into the cavity of the boot.
Grease and boot repair straps are inexpensive so that's always an option. Wear safety equipment and as always if you cannot fix this yourself, since the axle may already be out you could bring the axle to a mechanic to sort it out for you and pop it back in. Hope this helps 🙂
One of the bearings came out on me with it still connected. I used a 8" C-clamp on the knuckle and strut while moving drive shaft slightly to push the bearing back into the groove. When it came out it piereced my CV boot. Tried DAP silicone grease but that didn't work. See pic. postimg.cc/grY2rHKY

I’m wondering if this is what happened to me when I replaced my sister-in-law’s Ford Focus control arms. I heard a pop when I was on the drivers side trying to get the ball joint lined up with the spindle. Although I assume it didn’t pop out if I’m still able to turn the axle and see the other side spinning as well.
Possible, could have found its way back into position too as there is some tolerance, but if you run into this issue, you went beyond the tolerance in the design 🙂
Seeing this makes me wonder if maybe a bearing fell off the tripod when I over extended the inner boot. I’ve put the car together and taken it back apart twice now because I could hear a thumping sound from 5-10 mph. I couldn’t feel anything by squeezing the boot and I couldn’t hear anything rattling around inside but I guess with all that grease inside it would be hard to hear anything moving around. Man I hate to pull it all apart for a third time but I just may have to peel the inner boot off to check but that thumping is driving me crazy.
The good news is, if the boot is still good, the straps to re-secure it are not that expensive

Happened twice! Once on the drivers side but then I needed to get the axle out, was gonna replace, destroyed the lower ball joint boot. As I was struggling with the control arm ball joint the axle miraculously realigned! I was only doing struts. So I had to replace the ball joint. Now the passengers side was easy and I gently set the hub on a block, kept a jack under as I lowered it just enough to get strut off. All is well, axle moves freely. Next day it got disconnected somehow. Ugh. I made a slide hammer for the Nissan when I had to take the axle apart to get the slide hammer on to get the inner drive axle part out. Worked sweet! I don’t want to have to do the same on this old 04 Civic 🙄 💩

HELP!!!! I took my coils off and let them expand while the axel was under them. Now the bottom arm is tilted outwards and wont go back up to where it was... What the hell did I do?!?!
How did you end up fixing this? mine extended as well during a suspension change. It won't bend back inwards so I can connect the wheel to the struts.

You pulled it out too far. Take the inner boot strap off, pull it back so you can see, and spread out the rollers while pushing the axle back in. Just like he says in the video.
Mine keeps slipping, how do i fix it? I can put it back in, even bought a new inner cv but the shaft keeps slipping... Please help
It could actually be broken too rather than just out of alignment.

LM Engineering yeah. About to attempt to get it out and reset them. I tried a strap around the pitmen arm but its to far out i guess. I pulled it downwards to get the coil out and felt it clunk...

LM Engineering thank you very much! Update* I turned the passenger side rotor and it slide back in, driver side took some umph and jacking but it finally gave way and slid back. I really didnt want to tell my wife I broke my car again😂

When installed a new cv it stretched as the boot pulled. I pushed it back but how do I know if I disconnected the bearing or is it fine cause it went back in ? Thanks
There's no true way to tell unless you take the boot back off and check, but if you can feel it then you may be able to judge it from there. Can always check and put a new strap on the boot if you are not confident.

So you put it back in but wont it just fall out again when you reinstall the axle? The same thing happened to me when replacing struts/ball joint and I was able to easily push the arm back into the joint. My car is now making knocking noises from that size (front passenger side) and it's freaking me out. What do you think? Thanks for the video
Well, could be axle but also could be something else since you changed multiple other things at the same time. I would bring this to a local mechanic to assess to be safe.
No it won't fall apart because the geometry of your strut/ shocks connected to your knuckle won't allow it.

The outer cv axle will not stay in the cv joint.
Do I have to open it up to put it back together?
Technically no in some cases, but it's not as easy since you can't see what's going on inside. My hope was that seeing the inside may assist in seeing the mechanics of how it works internally
If it comes out the Knuckle wont bolt back to the Strut. I used a c-clamp to force it back into the groove while turning the shaft slightly one way then the other.
What are the chances of doing this if I've driven on the stretched axle? like 1000 miles? I'm guessing as long as i don't see a bunch of stuff in the grease and the bearings work fine i'll be okay?
Not sure, no way for me to tell but yeah it would be wise to inspect the insides. Bring to local mechanic if unsure..
I seriously doubt you could reattach the knuckle to the strut if it were out of joint. but maybe your car is different.

My CV seperated (J11 QASHQAI) and I can't get this bastard back in. I've completely fucked myself doing this ball joint, the cv is fucked and now the hub doesnt align with the lower ball joint. I feel like an absolute dumbass
Time to pull the boot back and inspect what is going on. It only costs you a replacement boot strap to be able to see what's beyond the black rubber.
@@LMEngineering I worked it out, the J11 qashqai doesn't have servicable CV joints. They are actually pinched in and are not meant to pull out. I ended up replacing the whole drive shaft

My axle came with the vehicle over 18 years old throwing it out a window Rusted bent to hub not sitting flush like some one forced it😆

This happened on my inner when I was changing the LCA/ Strut becuase I ONLY supported the vertical weight of the knuckle and not camber. One of the bearings came so far out that it tore the boot (see pic). I tried DAP silicone grease, but that didn't work so I'm going to try a speedi split boot. postimg.cc/grY2rHKY
