You are a hero. I'm getting up in years and just don't have the strength like I used to. I was struggling with a popped CRV axle for 4 days and it wouldn't go in. Went to HD and got a Husky strap for $7. I never used one of these straps before so it took a few tries to figure out. You need to get the strap underneath the ratchet handle otherwise it will prevent you from moving the handle once its tight. Got the strap on tight, jacked up the arm so the axle was lined up straight with the tulip, then spun the wheel on the opposite side back and forth till I heard the "clunk". Music to my ears!! Again, this is brilliant. The best mechanics are able to think outside the box and figure out alternate ways of working when they get stuck. My father was one of those and so are you my friend.
Wow nice job! The same thing happened to me with my Honda, but I didn't even think about using a strap. I ended up pulling the axle out and manually working those bearing back in while on my work bench and vise. There is another video with a guy showing how you have to apply outward pressure on those bearings to get them to go back in. Removing the axle was a lot more work for sure, so good to see there is an alternative to doing that. Thank you for sharing.
You are a God send! I have been super stressed and just in a mood because I’m stuck in a parking lot trying to fix this exact issue( my was a broken coil on my stut but same axle issue). This has given me hope! Thank you so much for putting this out!
Thank you! My Vibe axle pulled out just enough not to realign the bolts on the ball joints and this answered my question as to what the hell have I done and more important, shut up my wife who said I should have paid the shop to do it! I owe you a beverage.
I just pushed it back in but needed to see this video to get the idea. Took a little force do it by hand with just the axel in my hand. I was so stuck trying to get the spindle lined up with the control arm. I had no idea I even pulled the axel apart. Thanks for posting this!!!

I was replacing the struts on both sides and the lower ball joint on the passenger side of my 2008 Sienna when the passenger side CV axel popped off the inner CV joint housing. I was using the jack to lift the rotor to help line up the new ball joint's bolts with the control arm - in hindsight not the best way to do it. I had an oil catch pan I threw down to catch most of the dripping grease. Actually I was surprised with how little grease there was and although it had the consistency of syrup it did sort of re-gel up when stationary. Once I got the grease mess under control, I tried in vain to try to get the CV axel's 3 bearings back into the housing. I jiggled and worked different angles but couldn't get the bearings any more than part way in. I also looked up this video and tried the ratchet strap idea but everything was probably so far out of alignment that it had little to no hope. So I decided to finish installing the ball joint and struts which would help line up the knuckles on both sides with the CV axels and then try again. Note, I did not install the big bolts between the passenger side knuckle and the that new strut but I did work the strut's bracket onto the knuckle's mounting arm as best I could (I had a punch loosely sitting in the top hole). Once that was all done I then put the minivan into Neutral and with my mechanic wanna-be daughter watching me I rotated the rotor and jiggled everything as best I could. And within a couple of rotations I noticed the bearings suddenly moved inwards, and then within less than a half a turn later there was a satisfying thunk as the bearings seated fully into the back of the housing. That was a BIG YAAAY from me. I didn't want to be one that called the tow truck after reading the many excellent comments here. Then I fully installed the passenger side strut, cleaned up the housing and boot with a little spray nine and blue shop towels and tried to fit the boot back over the rim of the housing - to no avail - the angle of the outer CV axel was too great and was pulling on the top part of the boot. So NOW I jacked up the rotor 3 or 4 inches to lessen the axel's angle and tried again - this time with only a little persuasion it popped into place. I took the boot off again and picked up a 90g tube of premium molybdemum grease (supposedly one tube is good for a joint), a new CV joint clamp and CV clamp pliers (I had the guy that sold me the pliers demo how to use them - helped a lot). I used some advice my mechanic brother-in-law gave me and put a little moly grease on my finger at a time and worked the grease over as much of the three bearings that I could touch. His concern was time would be needed for proper grease circulation to get established with the bearings so this in theory wouldn't start them off dry. Then with the remaining grease I squeezed it into the inside of the boot (as far in as I could get it - awkward from being on my back on the garage floor with not a ton of room) and quickly worked the boot onto the housing until it popped into place. I then had my daughter hold the new hose clamp in position while I got the CV pliers in place over the square crush locking tab. The thing I kept in mind was to push hard with the pliers against the square tab while slowly squeezing the handles shut. Worked like a charm! I've now driven the minivan over 10 miles and it feels and sounds good. Now for the front end alignment. THANK YOU LUKE FOR THIS VIDEO! It gave me pause and hope to overcome the sudden shock of dealing with a popped out CV axle. The other commenters here also provided golden words of advice. MUCH APPRECIATED!

Just saved my ass. I was also working on my 2006 Honda Pilot replacing LCAs. I did the first one last night. It went fairly smooth. Started on the second tonight. I was having a little more trouble tonight because the knuckle was out a little further than it should be. I was concerned that I pulled the axle. I wasn't sure how to pop it back in. You talking about just rotating the axle and pushing was the trick. Popped car into neutral so the hub would spin. A little finagling and it went. Oh so satisfying. Once the axle popped everything else slid right into place as it should. Thanks a ton.
hell yes. I'm just wrapping up an alternator swap, the belt is giving me hell. came in for a break and to see what can be done about this new cv axle my bf installed a few months ago as there is a terrible clicking which has gotten worse. while under the car last night i decided to do a wiggle check. sure enough that's the loose part no question. i am goimg to try out this method way to go work smarter not harder . i love it.
Best to undo the axle hub nut first before removing lower ball joint. Remove axle from hub end. Replace control arm, inner bushes first then axle/ lower ball joint. NB keep axle as straight as possible with bungie cord. Still a pain to do😢
I don't have a ratchet strap so went to walmart and got something similar called a ratchet tiedown for about $5. They don't work too well so now going to home depot to see if they have a ratchet strap. What a PITA!

Like others have, I thank you. Both CV axles slipped out when I was replacing my struts on my Subaru. Little ratchet strap action with the jack lifting the control arm I got it done. Thank you man!
I wasn’t sure if this was common. So I started investigating, and found myself here 😁. While changing the lower control arm, I found it easiest to start the body bolts and then lineup the ball joint. I left the brake assembly also attached. I used the rotor to rotate the axle, which made it much easier to turn. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for the video and reassurance that I didn’t just mess something up 🦾

Great job dude. I just did the same thing with a new axle so I've got my lower control arm off replacing it too and my brakes and knuckle are off . I thought there was no way for you to get that back in unless you removed the things that were keeping you from keeping the axle straight as you were trying to push it in..
I’ve got my brakes and knuckle off because I’m replacing the ball joint too. Were you able to pop the axle back in with the knuckle off, or did you do it after reinstalling the knuckle?
Same thing happened to me last night with my wife’s Audi Q5 while replacing the upper control arms. Sure enough, while spinning the axle, I was able to work the CV axle back into place.
Thank you so much for your video. It made it so easy. You did a meta analisis and gave us the comon theme. Deload the axel of all it weight. Use rope to pull in the axes and rotat the axes until in falls in. Dang. It realy falls in 😮. I thought i had broken something. 😅
Thanks for sharing this video! Man I wish I came across your video sooner. I believe I broke the cv axle on the front right of my 07 Honda pilot. I replaced both control arms and sway bar links. After I did everything I tried going out for test drive and oh boy as soon as I put it into gear I heard a loud metal to metal screeching noise. Upon re inspection it looks like the cv axle look deform and the boot is broken closest to the wheel! I just ordered another axle hopefully that solves my problem.
Bee control arm bushing where you have the brick... for mine I cannot get it to go in place because the metal inside the rubber seems too wide to fit in. I tried hitting it with a hammer a little bit and using a Jack to put some pressure on it with no luck so far. My next attempt will be to more aggressively use a jack and then to whale on it with a full size sledgehammer.
Hi! I found this video today, but I believe we found it a bit too late. Or maybe not too late? I'm not sure. Do you have any advice how to pop it back in when it's extended too much that what you suggest in this video doesn't work bc it extends out even more? We can't get it jacked up to straighten it up without it extending out more.
I’m doing the front LCAs on my 04 civic hybrid and ran into same problem. LCAs aren’t lining up now. Axle boots are stretched just like yours. I have one knuckle (and brakes) off right now (to replace a ball joint) so I’m going to try to pop the axle back in while the knuckle is off. I assume it will be easier to pop back in while free. First time working on suspension.
@@lukeqstafford I didn’t realize you were the guy who made the video lol. It turned out we didn’t need to use the ratchet strap. Popped the axle in when the knuckle was off the car, by turning the axle until hearing the click then moving it back and forth quickly and pushing it in at the same time. Takes some tries, hope my axle is ok as some grease was coming out the boot that is near the ball joint. It kept popping in and out all the time while working on the suspension… so we got the new control arm back bolts in, axle popped in, then put the axle in the knuckle while putting the new ball joint into the control arm. This was easier with the outer tie rods removed from the strut, so had free movement of the strut.
I think it's much easier you have to bolt first but not tight the one who have the problem, and the last you have to put back is the ball joint near the wheel hub.
I have different issue i was chaning my rear lca, and one day i tried to back up wjile both arms were off and it popped the drive shaft out from the front Some guy told me it was in a bind. Im lost lol im like it looks fine to me. So am i to pop the front baxk in ? Cause it seems difficult or do i need to take apart the whole drive shaft
I have the problem at the opposite end, hub end popped when I turned the hub; despite not touching the hub nut. I'm going to jack the arm up with a bolt or twi in place and see what luck I have.
Good luck. Found out today I have a bad front right bearing on my 2007 Sierra so I’ll be doing the same project again soon. 50/50 chance I still pop the CV out even though I should know better 🥸
@@lukeqstafford If it does happen, once the straps are on, turn the steering wheel in the correct direction to extend the steering rod away from the engine, tie the straps and pull the CV joint back in place by simply turning the steering wheel in the other direction. It pops in nicely. Edit; don't forget to detach the arm, if not it will swivel and not pull over.
Thanks for the video! Accidentally popped the cv doing the same thing.. thought I would need to buy a new cv! I took the two bolts out on the struts to get some more articulation. And these things won't just slide in if they are lined up.. definitely need some force. I used my bfh to help. (big fckn hammer). thanks again!
I am have one hell of a time getting my CV Axle out of transmission...thinking about disconnecting everything else and hoping my axle pops out on it's own.All joking aside,never had a fight like this,why would Honda make things SO hard to work on,took 15 mins to change my Chev Truck last week
Yes Buddy,Got it,The trick was rotating the axle as it was being pried away from transmission.Had tried once before but put it all back together.I replaced Hub,Bearing,Rotor,Caliper,Lower Ball Joint and then Axle...brake pads as well.Pretty much everything that was on the way.THANKS@@lukeqstafford
I like to DIY for a few reasons. 1 it saves money. 2 I like learning new things. 3 I work at a desk all day so it’s fun to work with my hands on the weekends. Do I mess things up from time to time? Definitely. But UA-cam is amazing for problem solving. I dunno man 🤷♂️ I just enjoy doing it.

Just happened to me last night but has three bearings in it and one slipped off
Use another jack to lift up the hub.. this straightens everything

It was my first time working on suspension in-depth too. How’d it go did you get it back in place? What was your method?

circlip had to have the opening at 12 o clock, and then I tapped it with a hammer. (Subaru), but working on a BMW now, same issue as Luke here.

Oil usually falls ou of mine if I mess up pulling on the axel
Haha did the same. Does any fluid leak out? Concerned with it getting mixed up get the grease. Mines popped right back in

I took the two bolts out on the struts to get some more articulation. And these things won't just slide in if they are lined up.. definitely need some force. I used my bfh to help. (big fckn hammer).

I am have one hell of a time getting my CV Axle out of transmission...thinking about disconnecting everything else and hoping my axle pops out on it's own.All joking aside,never had a fight like this,why would Honda make things SO hard to work on,took 15 mins to change my Chev Truck last week
Are you taking the driver’s side axle out? What car are you doing it on?

Yes Buddy,Got it,The trick was rotating the axle as it was being pried away from transmission.Had tried once before but put it all back together.I replaced Hub,Bearing,Rotor,Caliper,Lower Ball Joint and then Axle...brake pads as well.Pretty much everything that was on the way.THANKS@@lukeqstafford

I like to DIY for a few reasons. 1 it saves money. 2 I like learning new things. 3 I work at a desk all day so it’s fun to work with my hands on the weekends. Do I mess things up from time to time? Definitely. But UA-cam is amazing for problem solving. I dunno man 🤷♂️ I just enjoy doing it.
Once you put the control arm back in place the cv axle will be back in place
