You can use the impulse to ping a resonant filter! Tons of sound possibilities.
Please more RYTM content! absolutely incredible machine!
we need more deep dives into this awesome Elektron box!
17:42 that's the best youtube advert and transition ever... free Justin!
That last beat is one of the sickest things I've ever heard on YT. Props
really great video. one of the very few times Ive heard someone make something worthy on this machine. enjoyed watching you explain the nuances, of this machine in a way thats realistic and not just going over the features one by one. too many of those videos out there. love how you use single cycle samples, and also the scenes and performance macros. i hope you do more vids w this machine creatively.
Fucking love some .paak. Nice mix Jeremy 🙏 Thank you for taking that monetization hit to bring us this bop.
A faster way to handle samples is to go directly to a track's sample page, select an empty slot and press function and yes. That will bring you to the global memory and whatever you select there will automatically be loaded to the project.
Digitakt has the same hotkey for swapping a sample, so the same trick applies there!
Watching you perform at the end blows my mind in the same way as watching a concert pianist.
Me too
The RYTM is such a beast - Love seeing how you use it, and your emphasis that what you are showing here isn't ALL it can do, but it's what YOU do. I often have to remind myself that I don't have to use ALL of the capabilities of these machines, and nothing used to derail me more than "Oh it can still do X and I"m not doing it, I should use that"
And god yes, does this thing (and every electron box) need an SD card or CF or something for samples. Because of the space limitations and the management, I've mostly use samples for transients, kind of like how the DSI Tempest can work, and leave the real samples to something else.... If you think of it that way, as a pure "drum machine" as opposed to sampler, it makes more sense -- but that's now how it's positioned, and they are like 90% of the way to a truly great sampler, and that missing 10% is a very apparent 10%. The storage (and stereo) limitation is real, and a bit frustrating for where this is positioned.
What a fantastic demonstration! Must have watched a dozen or so extended demoes of this thing and just couldn’t hear the sound design grit and girth messing with the default sonics...this was a bit of a revelation! Big thanks
I have been hoping you would cover the AR mkII for ages.
Would love to see more!!!
Woohoo, looking forward to this! Thanks Jeremy!
Always learn something new from your Elektron videos, things I can take back to my Digitakt
It's my favorite groovebox (I have the mki), there are so many options to write really cool-sounding drum patterns. P-locks, decent fx, stacking samples with the analog drum sounds, etc. Once you get the muscle memory, it gets reallllly fast and fun to use.
You can get around some of the sample limitations on the RYTM by creating concatenated samples and parameter lock the start / end playheads to trigger different different samples and add variation. Not unlike the OP-1 if you're familiar with that device ;)
I get how people could be luke-warm about the design decisions regarding what features make it to each box, but if you have the budget to put a few of them together the limitations produce some really interesting results. The limitations on the sample bank if you lean into it will force you to be really deliberate about the way your projects are organized, and for me it caused me to rethink how I manage samples in my computer.
BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH SOME PROPER E X P L O D I N G
Awesome tutorial! I am still learning mine and just updated to 1.70 version for the new machines and Euclidian modes. Such a great drum synth! I love mix sample with the analog drum engine to layer a bass/kick, snare/synth line and more. The new HI HAT LAB is my favorite new machine to create custom hats.
I love my Rytm. The performance and scenes are so cool. With performance I’m always in 2 minds. Most packs you can buy will use performances and scenes to affect the track under the pad, so the performance in pad 1 will affect the bass drum, but I also like performances that act like a kind of more focussed control all, and I haven’t come up with a system I can use to make this consistent from pattern to pattern, project to project.
If I could change things I’d definitely introduce pattern level mutes, outside of song mode. This is the one thing that has totally held me back and meant that I’ve never performed with the Rytm without having the Digitakt alongside it.
Yeah baby!! Been waiting for this ish
TY for the reminder about what the impulse engine is useful for! My latest upload uses the exact technique you describe at 11:00, where I'm using a pad to trigger a signal going out the rear external outputs into this new eurorack fx unit I built, and then back into the Rytm's External In. I had to turn off the synth engine on that pad entirely in order for it to only play the sample, but I think I could have achieved the same effect by merely changing the engine to Impulse. Thx Jeremy! -Barry
YES! I just got one of these after trying out the syntakt. The analog machines on that thing were so good that I knew I'd love this machine. It is also nice that it basically has a digitakt built in to it too. I love resampling and filtering the resamples to make weirdo delay like effects. I'm on a lunch break when typing this but I am looking forward to watching and learning from you! Thanks for all of the knowledge you share.
it certainly is not a digitakt in regards to the sampling. sampling is way better on the digitakt.
@@trigmusicnz how so ? im debating between rytm, dikitakt and octatrak.. sampling rate ? or aliasing or timestretch/pitch handling ?
cheers
@Marco Chaiwallah it's super simple. Digi now handles slicing up a break like octa. Rytm is just one shots. Sort of. There are ways...
@@trigmusicnz yeah as time goes on and elektron keeps updated the digitakt, I am happy to say my original comment is even more incorrect. Happy to be incorrect with rad updates like we keep getting!
@@jamesherndon8066 so did you trade the rytm for a digitakt now?
implus is great for pinging the filter with a high resonate setting and getting really unique toms and other sounds.
absolut incedible man!!! love the final track. Keep on man.
This was awesome! More Rytm MKII videos please.
Man, I just learned about how great the compressor is, and how it doesn’t apply to the individual outs. watching igor tweak the master fx and analog chain with performance patches also hilights the amazing machine. Here I was using the individual outs for post production, and was amazed to see that I had been underutilizing a huge feature on this beloved machine- the analog compressor on the main outs!
Compresor Doesn't apply to direct outs ? You sure? If it's applying to direct mains outs, it should also be applied to when you using rest of the direct outs.
That Paak mash up at the end was great!
Awesome final beat!
You can use the CV/pedal ins (set to Expressions but use a switch) to build another two instances of SCENES but only four parameters per (pedal/switch) scene. This is how I use mine as I too run out of parameters in the scene page.
Great video, awesome track!
Joey Blush Response and Baseck have some absolutely mind blowing videos with this thing
Although for techno and drum and bass the MPCs are king imo
You seriously nailed that final song like perfect all around
Love RmR and Jeremy 💖❤️💖
great vid. awesome jam. watched twice. there is seemingly much appetite for AR vids judging by the comments, and I'd certainly enjoy more jams from scratch.
This final beat is absolutely unreal.
I love that you're showing off what the Rytm can do. Do not think this Elektron box gets nearly the love it deserves. I keep thinking I should sell my Takt & Tone and pick up this, cause I really need a drum-focused machine I can also make grooves with (and those other boxes just don't fit in my setup the way I thought they would). It's also wild that both the Rytm and Syntakt exist in the same timeline. I kind of feel like if the Rytm and Syntakt merged (and had expandable memory or accepted sd flash, as you mention) it'd be an unrivaled box. Great video, Jeremy!
I agonized for months before I chose Octatrack and Rytm over the rest of the Elektron stuff.
Keep the Digitone, though! Such a marvelous machine for sound design.
@@Space_pulse sure, but I have Arturia’s DX7 VST. And since the Tone can’t sample. Not disagreeing. Just not sure it’s enough of a reason to keep it.
@@mntbighker how’d you get on with the Octatrack? It always sounds like the most impenetrable Elektron box, design-wise.
Rytm and the analog heat were the only two boxes I kept. No regrets! I had the entire elektron ensemble at one point in time, but it just got too convoluted due to overlapping features and not know what machine to turn to for any given task
Some wizardry on Rytm. So cool! Thx!
It's a deep box, I wouldn't mind a follow up. (;
Fuck yes! This is great! Would love to see more RYTM stuff on your channel 🥰
▲ audio rate lfo to pan is the one for me! thnx jeremy!
Great video. Advertising break was really good also.
Love the AR MK2. Got the grey though. amazing track!
One of the most used machines in my main music genre (Tekno)
PS: Would love to see a review on the Sherman Filterbank 2 someday haha.
Absolute banger!
Damn. I think im gonna go detonate my digitakt now!
Outro song is FYYYYRE 🔥
Badass video. Thank you sir
I've had mine for a year and I've still barely explored what it can do. I was looking for an analog drum machine with big expressive pads and this was pretty much it. At times it has frustrated me very much due to technical issues (glitchy pads, frequent hangs), but now that I've worked out the kinks (latest firmware did me wonders), I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I use it for a lot more than drums. I've given up trying to get a good analog cymbal crash out of it however, I think I might just have to use a sample.
Could never sell mine, it rocks stand-alone, works amazing in the daw with overbridge, and you can make amazing samples for other samplers or daws. Surprised how little it’s talked about
what is overbridge?
That’s because most people will not spend $2k USD on a drum machine 😢
Dope track mate
That Track!! ❤
Wow!!!! This track!
Honestly…..I actually enjoyed your advertising for Patchworks. Cool editing skills
I think that disembodied voice was actually a computer program that thinks it's a person trapped in a computer. Like, 80% confident.
Came here for rytm tips and left with an Anderson paak remix. Good stuff 🎉
Man that final beat is hard
Pretty Badass Indeed, sir!
Good video Jeremy! We use this a pretty opposite way as I am way more sample based on it, but one thing that is awesome for the analog drum engines is that you can P-lock each synth engine to a single step on 1 single track. So for example, if you are on BD track 1, you can trigger all the buttons and then when you hold down each one when you go to the synth area you will find that you can now pick any engine you want - hats, kicks, snares - you are not limited to the BD and a few others anymore...It's pretty wild and mind- blowing since you can get that Aphex type of choked sound from the engines constantly switching plus you have just freed up a ton of tracks for other things as well. So yeah, I think this is right up your alley with the styles of music you like to make. Would love to see you try this!
for real? i'm not around my rytm at the moment so can't try this.... but you are saying you can pick any sound engine by p-locking (rather than being restricted to the few that Elektron lets you pick from when assigning one to the track?) is this just for the bottom four or for all? would be epic to have more dual VCOs up top
@@ChurBoBaggins No, you're still restricted to the sound engines that are available on each track.
@@ChurBoBaggins Good question, I always do it on the bottom 4. But try it!
@@ChurBoBaggins The one detail I forgot was that you need to add the sounds you want to the sound pool, which takes 1 second. So you do that first and then Plock the sounds from the sound pool list. So yeah, you could have a track with kick/snare/shaker all on one pad. The thing is that it sounds really cool - super tight and choppy since the engines are cutting each other off every note.
Dope
More Rytm please!!! 🥰
bro. audio rate lfo on panning is such a good idea why didnt i think of that!! way better than short delay on ping pong, because then youve soaked up your delay. mate. thank you for this. still though, we need more lfos like on digitakt!!!! damit
Fire !
Love to use an expression pedal on this machine as well.
Btw super fat remix. Hopefully you won’t get a copyright strike tough.
Rytm mk2 & syntakt as a pair is amazing
gah damn the final performance is too good!
Dope machine
The patchwerks ad is hilarious
If I use distortion and compression on my Rytm MkII I get a lot of noise. Anyone else having the same problem?
ah thanks, thats a really helpful video xx
Id love to get a rytmII (or maybe a syntakt but no layering samples under the machines hmmm) but I really dont need the sequencer or that... cant justify $ for only using half the machine... great to see what you can do with one tho.
t’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content.
I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak.
I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds.
When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap.
I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power.
In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with.
What would be your suggestion?
Thank you!
3:49 I almost choked on my lemonade
Does it allow to detune/pitch shift the drum sounds ?? Thnxx brother ❤
Did you mean exploring? 💥
sick video i had a question once you pretty much had all your sounds made in the rytm how were you able to process it into a whole completed beat ? im very interested in grabbing one very soon i use ableton 11 and i've read about the overbridge app just wondering if thats how you achieved this , keep the videos coming ! ps do a master class lol
I performed and edited in Ableton
Hey so if you uploaded a longer acapella sample to the RYTM like you did, do you need to time stretch it in a DAW first before loading it into the RYTM Or are you able to set it to grid/BPM inside the RYTM? ..Or was the acapella not even in the RYTM during your final song? Thank you
That audio rate pan trick is so smart. Gonna see if I can replicate it on the Cycles.
Works great on the DN!
Anyone have advice on which elektron to go with and why one would pick say the analog rytm vs octotrack vs analog four or any of the other models.
Syntakt is my recommendation
More Rytm!
daaaammmm bro
Great-sounding song! And though I don't have the same hardware, the setup gives me all sorts of ideas to use in a future project. Thanks!
youre making this really hard, today i decided to keep my tr8s for further testing and then sell it maybe becuase what ive been looking at is adding some analog drum synth and i thought i settled on trying to do it with the analog four over syntakt/rytm.
Syntakt rocks super hard
I hate my tr8s and should probably get around to selling it to get a RYTM at some point since the digitone sold me on the elektron workflow
Goddamn 🔥🔥
Do you have any information on them releasing a new rytm mk3? I have the original kind of stopped using it when I couldn’t load up my own samples. The version you have in this video I’m pretty sure you can load up your own samples finally …. but I’ve been waiting on the third version because while I like these two I feel like they need to step it up on the screen and get with the times and do what MPC is doing. It doesn’t have to be full on what MPC is doing but at least put a bigger LCD screen (possibly touch screen) to make the editing parameters a lot easier functionally and I feel they could squeeze in a lot more functionality through a different GUI interface system. Not trying to tell them how to run their business lol 😆 but if they could make one of these with a bigger screen I would also like bigger drum pads I can’t remember if they do the same after touch as the asm hydrasynth but add that tech if possible. I always love the simplicity of the sequencer on their devices so that’s one plus but again the song mode on these is trash another thing they need to adjust. My last complaint would be unusable sounds they come preloaded. I know this thing is an editing dream and I do that with other devices they have. However a lot of the sounds that come factory loaded are trash (literally unusable). They need to step it up in that department for a device that’s like 1200-1400 new. I still love the analog 4. Just want them to make the next leap maybe it’s just wishful thinking but I hope they’re coming out with a new one
I have no idea sorry
I don't see Elektron making a big touch screen. Like, maybe they might do a tablet app to control the hardware, but their brand is really tied to the knobs and buttons.
This is my one of my primary machines that I use along with the A4. The Mk2 is for my home studio setup and mk1 is what I take for live. That being said, you need to do a little bit of research as your claims are incorrect. Mk1 has been able to load its own samples for years now. The mk1 can not sample into the machine as the mk2 can but loading preprepared samples is no issue at all.
And while I have an very much enjoy the new MPC line Elektron needs to be Elektron and not even worry about AKAI or try and be anything like them. That’s nonsense.
You can load samples with the mk I. You just can't use it to *create* samples.
Waiting for .Paak's remix on Send Me To Sleep now
Sick beat! More Rytm videos please!
The snare on this thing sound way more substantial then the on Korgs new analog drum machine.
man if Elektron updated the syntakt to be able to import samples it would be insane..
it can inport samples.. see the button on the top right called 'smpl.' that is the samples button. its an intrinsic part of the machine to use samples
@@synthclub show me where on the Syntakt that button is please..?
they never will its not for that
Did they ever fix the pads? I had one for awhile and they kept cutting out the analog voices, which didn’t make sense to me. I think the pads were just not quite working properly.
There are multiple choke groups you may have run into
Nevermind, i had it splitting voices on pads.
wow - all the things you do is magic
about Paak sample: did you edit it on another platform or is it sampled into the RYTM?
Ableton
I have not really found my drum machine. DFAM, is my fav price of kit, but not as primary drum. I currently have a TR-8. It is ok. I have friends that love the mk 1 of these.
Hot. gotta ask - did you put the vocals in the machine, or is it coming from another source, please?
Ableton
Gosh I love my Rytm, and yes I hate the sample management!
Definitely worth the $$$
Great video as always. If you find a good source for samples to use with the rytm, let us know.
The "[machine] From Mars" samples of classic machines work a treat with Rytm, in my experience.
5:45 the WMD Kraken?
Thanks for a great reminder of why I love it so much, limitations and all 😘🎚😵
Hi, are these the stock samples?
No
At 1:31 the compressor volume was at 69.... nice.
This beats TR8s in every department. TR could have been so much better but Roland really half assed it.
And for only about twice the cash too!
Does it somehow differ from the white color version of this device?? They’re the same, right? Cheers beers brother ❤
I chose the Rytm over a batch of Euro modules for my percussion. Lately I sequence it from Nerdseq via midi quite a bit. Of course that wastes that magic Elektron sequencer.
Me too :)
@@RedMeansRecording Yet I have frequent GAS for the VPM.QD anyway 🙄
2 LFOs + Base Width Filter and I would immediately purchase one of these machines ^^
Edit: Do you think it would be possible to get the Base Width Filter at least on only digital samples? You could apply the filter before the DA Conversion. On the Analog Engines I see that this is not possible, but on the samples? why not?
This way people could if they want sample the sounds they created on the machine and get rid of frequencies they dont want a bit more easy
