Get a 20 pack of piezos for like $15 and strap em to everything. Or get a little wooden box and mount all kinds of stuff to it: Springs, coins, screws, hinges, buttons, switches, keyboard keys etc.
Venus Theory built a homebrew version of one of these, and he pulled a lot of dark ambient horror out of his. Fun to hear the very different sounds you make with a box full of contact mics. Love the multiband chain you're playing with.
I remember when i heard my first record of Einstürzende Neubauten (Halber Mensch). The sounds and the dynamic was something that immediately went down my spine. They always used springs and other things that they made disturbing sounds with. This reminds me of this.
Hi Jeremy - this video both inspired me to subscribe and buy my very own Soundbox. So thanks for that. It arrived the other day and since you were asking in this video for similar things, the Gechologic Loopsynth is BOTH an amazing similar thing AND that also pairs beautifully with the Microphonic Soundbox. The Loopsynth has a bunch of different channels of crazy reverbs, weird ambient soundscapes, emulations of MI Clouds, and other fun stuff - and most of this stuff has some type of resonance function. More important for this reason, it comes with little microphones and can be played by striking and little finger theremin moves on it's light sensors. It also has a line in. So you can see where I'm going with this. The MSB sound is coming in through the line and through the microphones where its meeting up with these crazy effects that can be further augmented by striking the box of the Loopsynth, which means if I just put the Loopsynth on top of the soundbox and play both while dragging the bottom of the Loopsynth along the sandpaper of the MSB. Oh or you can also play other acoustic instruments that the Loopsynth picks up. Or just burp into both!
This sounds so nice! I haven't wanted to buy anything hardware for a while but this fits the theme of my style so much! I love those deep drone sounds with the resonance, adds such a tribal atmosphere
I think that Patricia Taxxon would like this. It’s tactile and is good at making little clicky sounds, as well as big resonant sounds. Could easily imagine sounds from this in her newer albums.
Recently departed Bay Area artist and musician Tom Nunn taught workshops about how to build what he called a “Skatchbox” using a small priority mail USPS box (they’re free until you mail them) objects from around your home and work, paper, markers and glue. Tape a piezo mic to one and you’ve got a little DIY resonance box that sounds like your life!
I’ve had a ton of fun with a Kalimba with a pick up looped by the Roland Aira Voice Tweaker into the Ext input on a DFAM. Excited to try some of these experiments with the band splitting
Oh man i haven't watched you in years! I saw you pop up in that speech jammer video and i then realised it had been 5 years since i last saw a video of yours! I dont remember ever unsubbing! Its cool to hear your voice.
A truly analog addition to the COLLECTION! You could give things anywhere from a West African to an American Bluegrass spin with this as well as surreal soundscapes.
I made something similar using a simple piezo microphone and a wooden box, springs, a clockwork spring, hand turned music box and a jar lid- though I will probably add another piezo microphone. Effects definately make it come alive- great for atmospheric sounds- you'll have heard something similar in horror/psychological drama films!
This is so bizzare to watch as someone who doesn't do a lot of music production, but it's pretty awesome to see you turn a ton of simple physical oscillators into a whole ass groove. Love it!
That sounds so good 💚 I’ve been wanting to make a diy version of this myself, with built in delays and stuff but it’s still just in my head.. If you wanna check it out there’s a video of Trent Reznor working on the gone girl ost using such a device to make the beats, the luminist garden? And I join my voice to people mentioning einsturzende neubauten, they use a load of stolen and repurposed construction site machines to make weird noises, pressured air into pvc tubes, bows on drilling machines and stuff, and the music is great ❤️ They are a joy to see live! Have a wonderful day!
Love mine and I run it through a SOMA COSMOS. Loop Pedals like the BOSS RC Series are a great combo. Also tipp for mindblowing gear: anything from SOMA. I have the TERRA and it is a whole new level of synthesizer.
Love the VCV patch, got me wondering if I can be arsed creating a DIY version to experiment with myself. I would probably stick it through 16 Rings and randomly modulate everything. Could definitely take this a lot further!
Thx was fun and inspiring. The Amp in this box or there field version is from a nother world, super clean. How does it sound when you play a trumpet, flute or string instrument? How does the environment/box react? What can you do with a granular instrument e.g. Tempera? Additionally a groovebox TR8 or 707 without DAW?
i tried playing something into it and it didnt really feel all that interesting? i do need to try doing feedback with the box, i think that would be neat.
Check out Physical Synthesis Cicada. Love it! First saw Ben Jordan use one… a bit spenny but very versatile 👌 Also DIY is a good way to go. Hit up your local electronic store and get a couple of piezo mics and maybe disassemble an old electric guitar from a thrift store for the pick-ups and internal amp, and you have a cool little kit 💪
A lot of these experiments could be done with an electric stringed instrument, guitar, violin, bass, etc. but obviously, the timbre of this device is more unique to itself.
Yep, I do similar stuff with guitar and VCV sometimes. Not sure it produces anything useful but it's a hell of a lot of fun! Pedals are cool, but kalimba into Microcosm has been done to death on UA-cam already, so modular is probably the way to go with this.
Ooh, I've seen Mark Farrelly play homemade ones... very cool to have a version people can just buy, with a little bit of everything in a fairly small space. Some of Farrelly's are way bigger, with much larger springs, which of course tend to have more resonance on the low end. But the larger a box like this is, obviously the more unwieldy it is. I really like the tuning marks on those tines here, makes it nice to get western-tuning sounds if you want. You chose some great effects chains here too.
I stumbled onto this a couple weeks ago and almost pulled the trigger on it. I'm a sucker for the Apprehension Engine, which this seems extremely similar too. Pretty sure I'm gonna get one now. Edit: So this is kind of hilarious, but one thought I literally had was "I wonder what it will do if you burp on it?" And then you did it, and it worked. Love it!
Imagine making a park where all of the things you play on and play with have mics on them and it's all processed like this. A bunch of people can play on effectively a playground and if they time their play together it can make wild music. I could see something like this being done at some place like Meow Wolf
I've got the Electro Lobotomy Sonic Forest and Spring Board that are similar. You've probably heard of Tony Duggan-Smith's Apprehension Engine or Waterphones as they're the more famous ones, or perhaps the MPA 019.
I’m bout to sell my Moog One so i can get one. I think this will really offer me that sound i’ve been seeking for so long. I think this will be the instrument that finally allows me to transcend
Wow this is a great video! 🚀 Thank you so much! You demonstrated the various integration possibilities just perfectly and you really got the point how we see the box ourselves. Great multiband processing chain and also the modular patch is👌
I just want to say that I am way impressed that you got that thing to basically behave outside the sphere of any sequel to the movie Alien in that dance track. Bro, what the fuck kinda dark magic is that? (I did in fact see what kinda magic it was, but still, damn.)
Hi Jeremy, lovely video! In the video you mentioned you might want to play with other devices similar to the Leaf Audio Box - I actually build piezo boxes similar to those and would be more than happy to send you one to play! Also, hope you like your skeletons blank panel!
Trying to decide what to watch next and my spouse suggested "that microphone video from The Furry" She has officially officially elected you the leader of your people. Long may you reign, I hope this responsibility doesn't change you Also my spouse who knows nothing of synths or synthtube said "his name's Jeremy, right?" as I was typing this. You've breached containment! Nowhere is safe!
Any tips for the violin bow - I feel like I rosin'ed the crap out of it and am still not getting any kind of cool sound (just very faint) no matter where I set the gain or how hard I bow? Am I missing something?
Acoustic instrument with multi-band split and resonators and effects? That's very similar to how the Wavedrum works. Now I really want to dust mine off and make some noise.
Top bananas. Really interesting. Did you try using pedals after the multiband resonant DAW doodah? That could be fun. So at the end, when you asked what resonant devices it would be interesting to interact with, I thought - how about a violin? Or a cello? I think a contact mic on either of those, treated similarly, would produce results at least as interesting as your soundbox there.
Get a 20 pack of piezos for like $15 and strap em to everything. Or get a little wooden box and mount all kinds of stuff to it: Springs, coins, screws, hinges, buttons, switches, keyboard keys etc.

Thanks! It's really such a good video and it was a big surprise. Our team loves it and we feel very motivated by it. Keep up the good work, Jeremy! 🤩
Thank you so much! It was really a wonderful treat to play with this and I have more ideas I'll be doing down the line!!
@@RedMeansRecording Cool, we're really looking forward. Nice to see what good people do with our stuff, that's the biggest joy.
Hell yeah ❤
Hi, you're Hainbach and it's good to have you back--- wait a minute! JEREMY YOU FIEND.
I remember when i heard my first record of Einstürzende Neubauten (Halber Mensch). The sounds and the dynamic was something that immediately went down my spine. They always used springs and other things that they made disturbing sounds with. This reminds me of this.
Bought a bunch of springs and mics and stuff last year to build something like this. Clearly I need to get around to it. This sounds really fun!
I love the experimental nature of this video! Between you and Hainbach I'm thoroughly inspired to just mess around and have fun with sound. :-)
Might try DIY'ing something like this!
Some piezo transducers and a bunch of random junk sounds like a great time!
its called a noisebox, there are plenty of videos on yt, only diy ;)
Amazing little box. Love it. On my list for sure 😊Lots to experiment with.

The sounds you are getting out of this gives me major cavern and tomb vibes. Amazing!
super inspiring (as usual) I was skeptical about this but now i'm just in awe... killer showcase of a unique instrument.
This is compelling... Only watching you, playing with this unusual instrument, makes my finger tickle for working on some music... Thank you! :3
Just listening to this inspired me to get the Deluge out and start messing about with weird sounds, delays and reverbs! Thanks 😊
I’ve had a ton of fun with a Kalimba with a pick up looped by the Roland Aira Voice Tweaker into the Ext input on a DFAM. Excited to try some of these experiments with the band splitting

Great video. That instrument is a lot better than it looks at first glance, as long as you know how to process it.
I've literally been building my own version over the past few weeks in my spare time. This video makes for a beautiful coincidence!
Whoa, it’s like a whole Lustmord in a box.
Really inspiring and helpful to see a detailed look at your Ableton setup with this. Thank you!
Your music is so good. I was listening to it while doing my routinely walks
This is so bizzare to watch as someone who doesn't do a lot of music production, but it's pretty awesome to see you turn a ton of simple physical oscillators into a whole ass groove. Love it!
LOVED THIS!!!
(esp ALL the ways you can interact with it)
Awesome creations. I especially like that they make one without any attachments, so you can attach all your own weird objects to make unique sounds.
That sounds so good 💚 I’ve been wanting to make a diy version of this myself, with built in delays and stuff but it’s still just in my head..

VCV rack is awesome. I can’t wait for the 4MS meta-module. Jeremy you need about eight of these boxes!

Love the Ableton integration. Some cool techniques to be explored
A lot of these experiments could be done with an electric stringed instrument, guitar, violin, bass, etc. but obviously, the timbre of this device is more unique to itself.
I guess my point is that it would be cool to see you compare this device to doing similar experiments with an electric stringed instrument.
