  • Vlog #44 Getting a Thai Drivers License Part 1
    BTS Bang Chak, Bang Chak Department of Land Transportation Bangkok Thailand
    01:07 getting a medical certificate
    02:54 documents needed
    06:10 physical test
    07:20 receiving the drivers license
    Check out Vlog #45 for the additional process of taking a driving class and passing the written and driving tests to receive a motorcycle license if you don’t already have a license from your home country. It’s the same process for also receiving a car license if you don’t have a car drivers license. The documentation steps are exactly the same as this guide so the next vlog is just a supplement for those that don’t already have a driver’s license from their home country and have to take the class and test in Thailand.

    What’s up guys, welcome back to livetravelasia.
    So today I am going to renew my driver’s license but the process is exactly the same as when I applied for a new driver’s license so I wanted to share this process as it’s super easy and cheap.
    Another way to explain where this clinic is
    Is that it’s located across the street on the opposite end of Bang Chak Station than where the Department of Land Transportation is.
    Ok so this isn’t as complicated as it sounds but I was being detailed for those people in peculiar circumstances so I try to cover all the bases however, all you really need to bring is a passport, get your medical certificate for 100 baht at the clinic and either bring an Embassy address verification or an original work permit if you have one. As for the copies, they know what to copy and it’s only a baht per page. You should also bring a valid driver’s license from your home country if this is your first time applying as it’ll save you from having to take the Thai classes and tests. If you don’t have a valid drivers license wait for our next vlog that’ll cover the class and testing as I try to get a motorcycle license which I didn’t have in the States.
    So given how easy and cheap this process is I don’t understand why so many expats in Thailand, including my friends risk fines driving without a license and deal with carrying their passports everywhere and risk losing it. I also use my license instead of a passport as collateral when renting a scooter. Btw, unlike the states, they print the ID for you on the spot. I’ve also heard some places require photos but at the Bang Chak office they take the photos for you.

    You do not need to go to any embassy to get an address verification. Instead go to Thai immigration and get a certificate of residence. I paid 300 baht for that. If you were living in a hotel they need to provide you with a document that states you’re staying there. If you were staying in a private residence or condominium there is a different form that the landlord must sign for you. You will Most likely have to provide the form.. And it is free. Not a high priced document from an embassy.

      Oh I’ve heard of this but also heard they don’t give it to you in practice. Have you done it? Where exactly in Chang wattana do you go and what documents do you need to bring for an address verification letter?

    • @Nebula37
      @Nebula37 2 роки тому

      @@livetravelasia It's the same office at Chang Wattana that you get your visa at. Information will give you a ticket at tell you which area to go to. You need your passport, copies of the ID page and visa page, and a copy of your lease. I think I had my work permit with me as well but I don't remember if they needed to see it or not.

    Update: went at 11:20 and I almost missed the cut time (11:30). Arrive maximum 11:00 am.
    Before this I: 1) got proof of residence from my embassy (1260 THB) and went to the clinic in your map (120 THB).
    They didn’t take my driver’s license from Argentina, they preferred my international driving permit (which cost me 500~ THB in Argentina).
    Did the physical tests, paid (205 THB), got my photo taken and got the license.
    Didn’t have to watch any video.
    Thank you for your guide! Super happy to have my thai license.

      haha if you're staying in asia for an extended period of time I still recommend you get one especially if you have a work permit. Just show up w your passport and the driver's license from your home country and you'll get one without testing in less than an hour for cheap. It's much better than having to carry around your passport. the locals also give you more respect if you show them a Thai ID and are less likely to give you the tourist treatment. :)

      Yoo, thx for making this video. I recently almost started classes to get a motorcycle license in The Netherlands what would have cost me more then 40.000 Baht. When I see how easy, cheap and fast the process of getting a license is in Thailand Im happy I chose not to spend my money on it here.
      I did 2 hours of driving classes to learn the basics here but I still have to take some classes tho. Do u know anyone that took driving classes in Bangkok? Im learning the language so language barrier is no issue.

      Makana Silva that’s a bit tough cause I think it just varies by what nationality you are. I am American and I graduated college so it’s easy to get one as an English teacher. You job does all the processing for you. My girlfriend doesn’t speak Japanese but she has language skills desirable in the hotel industry so she works in a hotel but it’s harder for an American because everyone speaks English and they have to pay higher wages than to the locals. I think best way is to just observe what other people are doing and find a job to sponsor you. Definitely good luck w that because I think this is one of the hardest things about living in Thailand.
      I am thinking of doing a thing about travel visas and extending them for another 60 days, or buying a condo or motorcycle. Or maybe even a cost of living video. Do any of those sound interesting?

    • @gifted79
      @gifted79 6 років тому +1

      LIVE TRAVEL ASIA thanks for the quick response. I’m also an American from Hawai but traveling back and forth between Hawaii and Thailand. I work out in Hawaii for six weeks and holiday in Thailand six weeks.
      Currently in Thailand I own a condo in Jomtien, married to a Thai, have a bank account and have a Thai driver license “ which was a easy process like you said.” FYI you can get a medical certificate 40 baht near On nut bts.
      Lately I was thinking about getting a work permit and doing a small business for my wife and I while I’m in thailand. It’s just a thought that my wife and I talked about just for fun.

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  6 років тому

      Makana Silva I think it’s better to just get the travel visa than. You really don’t make much money out here. You can get the 60 day than renew it for an additional 30 days every time. I actually have a guy doing online marketing who’s just been on travel visas for 2 years now without a problem and he doesn’t even travel back. Just visa runs for a week each

    • @gifted79
      @gifted79 6 років тому +1

      LIVE TRAVEL ASIA yes for sure you don’t make much in thailand but it’s just for fun that we want to do. As for visa because I stay more than a month I get a visa for 90 days at my local Thai embassy and I’m going to try for a year visa because I’m married now.
      I really enjoy your videos...watching your videos made my wife and I plan a trip to Koh Chang after Christmas. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Thai licenses are good for ASEAN countries on temporary stays and vice versa. Its mostly the original countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia) from the 1985 agreement and they have to be in English. I've used my Philippine license in Chiang Mai and Bali while on holiday :).

    The way i saw it explained ..is. ...to get the work permit theres a ( thai system not embassys. ) residency certificate required for work permit... so... you would have to have done residency paperwork to get work permit. In theory, according to that youtuber, you can get it... and maybe even on tourist visa as your hotel. Supposedly. ...

    Thank you. This is a great video. I just went to the LTO here in Samui with all the docs necessary and a valid FL state issued motorcycle and driver's license and they said I need to go to the embassy to get the license authenticated
    According to the Thai gvt website on the issue it clearly states that its not necessary to do this if the license is in English. My license is from FL, valid, not expired and in English
    You didn't run into any of this in BKK correct. Perhaps I'll have better luck there?

    • @livetravelasia

      I didn’t yes. Unless it’s a new policy. Bangkok btw has 3 offices. Go to the one near onnut I think bang chak the one I mentioned in this video. They are more used to dealing w foreigners. I myself ran into issues w the mochit one. It’s typical Thailand where they apply their own set of rules and Beurocratic red tape to tell u to back off if they don’t know exactly what they’re doing

      You have to wear long pants but the shirt doesn’t have to be long sleeve, just covering the shoulders. A t shirt would do. I can’t comment as to why the dress code but generally in government offices this is the same. My guess however is that it’s to be respectful in government offices? They let me slide w the shorts but wear long pants to be on the safe side cause they have a right to turn you away. They reminded me at every station that they won’t help me if I come back with shorts.

    Great video!! Thank you so much. I will be getting my Thai DL in the next week or so way out here in Chanthaburi Province in Eastern Thailand. One question I have for you...quite a few youtube posters and online forums for expats have been adamant that in order to avoid the practical driving and theory tests for those currently holding a DL from their home countries (USA) in my case, you have to also present an "International Driver Permit" the kind you get from AAA in the U.S. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. Some sites say yes, other say that as long as your home DL is in English, you don't need the IDP. What's your understanding of this, having gone through the process?

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  6 років тому

      David Hendrix in my experience you don’t need it. But than again if you’re doing this in another department of motor vehicle random stuff is possible but I only showed them my california drivers license, passport, address verification letter from the embassy (second time I renewed I used a work permit in lieu of that) and a medical certificate. This is the requirement but if you want to make sure your particular dmv isn’t enforcing some weird policy I’d check it out before you shell out 50 bucks for the address verification letter from the us embassy. If you have a work permit than it doesn’t cost u anything so just go for it. Worst case u can always just come to the bangchak dmv here in Bangkok.

    • @gmpatriots25
      @gmpatriots25 6 років тому

      Thank you for your reply. I couldn't understand either, why you would need an IDP to convert a valid current USA DL to a Thai DL. Again, my understanding is that the IDP is only required when the home country DL is not in "English." I'm going to the Land Transport office in Chanthaburi City on Friday armed with a medical certificate, a note from my Immigration Office showing current address (based on my most recent 90-Day report) and my current Florida drivers license. We'll see what happens? Thanks again for the great videos on this subject, which I know are extremely helpful to other expats including myself. DH

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  6 років тому

      I think you have the right idea David. Like anything in Thailand you gotta just try it yourself. Everyone's experience is different so you can only research it and worry about it for so long. BTW, my other buddy went today and they tell me now you have to sit through some one hour video even when just converting a DL so try to go in the morning because these videos and classes are usually conducted in the morning otherwise you may have to make two visits.

    • @gmpatriots25
      @gmpatriots25 6 років тому

      Well, no luck in Chanthaburi!! Armed with a current U.S. (Florida) DL for both car and motorcycle, a medical certificate and a stamped and certified copy of my current address based upon my wife's Tabien Baan (blue book) and my last "90-Day" report from the Chanthaburi Immigration Office, and they wouldn't even talk to me...said I had to get a notarized statement from my embassy in Bangkok...end of discussion! Everything I have read here online says "Embassy" OR "Immigration Office" for address verification. I do have to go to the embassy in May to get my annual "Income" verification to extend my one year "Retirement Visa." So I could do the address verification at the same time, and just apply for my Thai DL at Bang Chak, while I'm still in Bangkok, like you did. But now I am reading in some of the online forums that you can only get your DL from a Land Transport Office in the province where you are living? What have you heard about that? I would really prefer to not go back to the Chanthaburi LTO if at all possible! Also, did you just fill out the online address verification form and take it in to the embassy? Thanks so much for your great videos! DH

      Damn that sucks. Unfortunately the American embassy charges 50 dollars for that stupid address verification. On my renewal I had a work permit so I was able to use that but 50 bucks for an address verification is highway robbery in my opinion. The most unpleasant part of this whole process is my own embassy... As for who will issue you the DL... I have no idea... I live in Bangkok and got the DL from Bangkok so it wouldn't have been an issue for me. Although it's not hard to believe that may be the case. If you watch my new video on the 90 day report you'll see the embassies have similar rules and it seems they don't wanna help you if they don't have to. Although the Bangchak office, I only have good things to say about them. They seem to be processing foreigners in large quantities and people are friendly overall. I don't think you'll have problems there unless it really is a policy they have to follow. Either way it's hard to imagine Chantaburi will give you more problems if you had the address verification. BTW, not sure if I mentioned this but my friend who went last week said they changed the policy so that you have to watch some one hour video even if you have a valid DL. So you might want to go as soon as they open even though the lines are more horrendous if you don't wanna make two trips. Whatever the case good luck and let me know how it went!

      well that's a relative question. Honestly I had been hesitant about it but every expat motorcycle driver will tell u the same thing. hi LTA, Great little Vlog. Just a quick comment first. You mention the process of getting a "medical certificate" being a complete joke. Many people say this but in reality this is necessary to assist stopping people with very serious existing medical condtions gaining a license..Sure it may or may not be obvious at the physical test or by a general eyeball. Anyway. My question is how about if one is on a tourist 30 day Visa without a valid address? I'm an Australian/British Citizen. What should I do??

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  6 років тому

      Yeah you do have a good point... I guess if something was seriously wrong w me they would spot it eyeballing but someone at the dmv could probably do that instead of the nurse just think they should at least take your blood pressure or something haha. Anyways I got my original on a 60 day tourist visa but I had a utility bill that I could show my embassy to get the address verification. Not even sure if they checked. But you’ll have to check w your embassy and see if they have any conditions for the address verification letter. Other than that as long as you got a valid Australian drivers license you should be good to go. Another one of my buddies got the license on the 60 day tourist visa recently as well. If your on a 30 day non visa however I am not sure but next time you come in just apply for a standard tourist visa from the embassy. Saves you the hassle of boarder crossing every 30 days and the customs officers like it over the 30 day stamp

      I imagine it's different for each embassy but most embassies don't. The US embassy didn't when I did it 2 years ago. It's possible they changed but more likely they didn't change the policy. I don't think so... I've heard it's legal from what I've been told. Last I heard it wasn't legal in cambodia but a Thai driver's license would make it legal to drive in Cambodia due to the Asean agreement they have. I am not a lawyer and like most rules out here there is the rule and whats in practice and I am one to generally just follow what's in practice so don't quote me but you should be fine w an international driver's license but considering how easy it is to get a thai driver's license, I'd get one if you were planning on living and traveling out here for a year or longer
