It's a talk box. It's a simple device really. The amplified 'guitar sound' is fed up the tube which David puts in his mouth . He literally uses his skull as a resonator and his mouth shape to modulate the sound which is "sung" into the microphone. Basically, he uses his head as an instrument.

Whoever it was, was asking for two separate songs from this concert "Sorrow" and "Keep Talking". I would also recommend you check out "Sorrow" from this Pulse concert. You will be blown away!!

For me, Pink Floyd exists outside of any genre, they even kind of exist outside space and time in my mind. They're just special, they hit different. They're the perfect blend of cerebral and emotional. I listen to a little Pink Floyd every single day.

Peter Framton used that voice tube a lot back in the day. Great to see it being used on such an epic track.

It may be sad for others, but for Pink Floyd fans, don't worry about saturating your channel with, Pink Floyd music.
There will never be too many Pink Floyd reactions for us.

Great reaction! Yes, this mouth thingy is called a talk box.
You have to hear Coming Back to Life from that Pulse concert, you will love it too.

Sorrow is also from the pulse concert. It's incredible. I was lucky enough to actually be there. The whole concert was incredibly atmospheric from beginning to end. Floyd have a particular genius in this regard. The sound, the lighting, the special effects, everything was beyond breathtaking.
Great video and review. I agree with everything you said. Flawless.

The instrument is volledig a talk box . Listen to "do you feel like do" from "Frampton codes alive"by Peter Frampton,hè also uses it brilliantly. I saw the Pulse concert live with my 13 year old son at the werchter festival site in Belgium still the best concert ever saw.

Great reaction as usual! The use of a "Talk Box", as far as I know, was first used by The Eagles Joe Walsh on "Rocky Mountain Way", and it became more universally known when Peter Frampton used one on his "Frampton Comes Alive album. Other guitarists have used one over the years, but it seems Framptons use of one was widely known.
The detail, preciseness, and complexity of Pink Floyds music is really unequaled even today, and it's really astounding to think that they accomplished all this without auto-tune!

Gilmore /Pink Floyd were in Pompeii in 1971 ..and recently in 2016. You're a muso ..you will be blown away by both performance nearly 50 years apart. It's inevitable and there's a certain poignancy about these performances. ECHOES was the direction they took in music.

The spoken voice you hear where it states that "we learned to talk" is a sample voice from scientist Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking did some kind of a commercial regarding communication I think it was a cell phone commercial. And David Gilmour got permission by him to use his voice in this song. Just thought that would be interesting...

The talking in the beginning is the late Steve Hawking's electronic voice. It was taken from a television adbertisement.

Gary Wright used the "voicebox" as well during his song "Do You Feel Like I DO?" Pink Floyd used it also on their "Pigs/3 different ones song off the Animals album. The tube in his mouth is connected to the guitar then the amplifier. Not sure if he was the first to use it commercially or not.

Something people, unless you're my age, don't understand, except maybe people who have waited for some new iPhone thing, we use to camp out for days just to get the best tickets we could afford. My last ticket line was for the Animals tour 1977,but my 4th concert ever was Dark Side in 73. My first concert was Zeppelin, also 73.I was fortunate to see Flord 4 times. 1st in Tampa 1973. Last Atlanta The Wall 1979. It's unfortunate we age,but the music will live forever. Awesome... Peter Frampton was the first time I saw the voice box.

My ticket cost 26 quid and I think we were all aware that they weren't gonna make a fortune each out of this tour, it was magnificent, but obviously expensive, I've seen people ask why groups don't put on shows like this anymore, well, they've got to be willing to break even at best, Pink Floyd are already very wealthy and evidently not greedy...

I have attended many live performances over the years, including The Who (one of my all- time favorite groups). The best 2 concerts I ever attended, by far, were Pink Floyd (Cincinnati 1972) and Pink Floyd (Miami/Hollywood Florida 1973).

P.F. doesn't do concert, they do experiences which puts them in a category by themselves not really 4 beat rock & roll.. Have seen them 7 times. You seem to enjoy Daves guitar work. i would recommend his solo work# 1 " Live at Pompeii" ( whole show Excellent) Guy Pratt on base the only P.F. member. His last tour which he only wanted to play in small & historical venues, with small more intimate crowds. He plays his "black strat" modified with only 2 pick ups. ( sold for $ 3.9 million without his Jimi Hendrix guitar strap xxx). P.F. songs "sorrow" "high hopes" " comfortably numb" ( over 90 million views) solo "in any tongue"" on an island". Greatest non band vid. Pink Floyd "on the turning away" (1989-07-15) FM by thinkfloyd61. 5.6 million views on you tube.

The bass player here, Guy Pratt, has worked with Floyd for many years and is one of the best in the business. If you look up the word ‘musician’ on Wikipedia, it shows a picture of Guy Pratt.

Guy also did (and I think is still doing, but quite infrequently) a series on UA-cam during lockdown of how he played some of his songs - a lot of Pink Floyd requests, obviously, but other stuff in there too.

7:11 -- It was at this moment that he realized, for the rest of his life that David Gilmour was, in fact, a human guitar from the Gods with unlimited powers, who caresses gently his soul.

You still need to do the following:
    Comfortably numb - Pulse 1994
Echoes - Live at Pompeii both parts (early 70s)
Echoes - Live at Gdansk (mid 2000s)
Both Echoes songs are fantastic, I prefer the latter because it was the last time Gilmour/Wright played it and it was them at their pinnacle of music experience, they play off eachother beautifully. Pompeii version is a masterpiece as well.
If you want more great Comfotably Numb version , watch it featuring David Bowie.

It's a guitar effects pedal and it's called a "Talk Box". It has been used by many artist over the decades, Google it here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_box . But no one has ever mastered it anywhere near as David Gilmour did
