Oh, I didn't expect you are Iranian. This is the first time I've seen a video of an Iranian UA-camr. As someone from China, the least free internet country in the world, I know exactly how you feel. Keep going dude!
I totally agree with you, Gilmour is able to touch the soul. I recognize the goose bumbs and the tears. Your playing of the solo is also much better and has more feeling than Petrucci. I wish you all the best and keep safe. Greetings from the Netherlands.
You are very right my friend. I completely agree with you. Gilmour's solo is a number of notes played. It's just that these same notes played by ten different guitarists will sound more or less the same, but in no case will they sound the way Gilmour plays them. I don't know what exactly the reason (maybe the dynamics are actually) is not the same. When Gilmour plays them, your skin really crawls. I also play guitar and I know this solo, but I can't come close to exactly how Gilmour plays it. The beauty of this solo is not in the speed but in the cosmic sound, rhythm and energy that it brings when you listen to it. Maybe the sound itself plays some significant role, the audience, the lighting, Gilmour's internal setting when he plays it. I don't know? Indeed, the concert solo of this song is significantly better than the original one on Floyd's album. In the concert performance, Gilmour somehow comes up with an idea of how to improvise in the moment to make it unforgettable.
I respect Jon's approach. He followed David's template and still made it his own by sprinkling his own style in. That being said, I found myself missing the accents and phrasings of David. I slaved for two week's in middle school to learn this solo. No one will ever do it like David. I still love this video. Both guitarists are my favorites. David is number one and Jon would be a close second. I have always strived for Jon's technicality and David's phrasing at the same time.

Gilmour plays with a laid back feeling, that allows more room for dynamics and expression. The Petrucci version has a tone way to tight for the style, more metal, but the main factor that undermines feeling and expression is that is played faster by the whole band. Don't get me wrong, Petrucci's expresivity and feeling is also amazing, but is also important to evaluate if accelerating or slowing down a song makes it better or worse (for example, think diamond head and metallica version of "am i evil". In that case the more uptempo song fits better for a metal taste making it more aggresive). Put Petrucci with a more laid back tempo, a more spacious and spongy tone and you got a closer result to what Gilmore was going after. For a guitar player, playing a different style with the same tools you're used to for your own specific sound is risky, precisely because there are more elements into the "feel" idea than playing the right notes. There's dynamics, speed, and tone naming a few. On the other hand, if Gilmour could play a dream theater song or solo with his sound (or minor tweaks to is) that requires a tight aggresive settings, he probably will be falling short even playing the right notes.

I have countlessly cried listening to Comfortably Numb. I have played this song in the car so often to my daughter since she was a baby till one day I noticed tears running down her cheekbones as the second solo ends, she had just turned 17...
It's the tone and feel that makes the difference,I love how Dave Gilmore's guitar sounds so tube driven it's clean and not layered with so many effects and distortion it's crazy how he gets that sound and it's just so clean and crisp he hits harmonics without all the effects
Gilmour by a mile. theres playing it very well from a technical standpoint then theres putting the feeling and emotion in it and making the guitar weep
No contest...Dave Gilmore plays from the soul...shredding does NOT belong anywhere near a Pink Floyd song... Great job with your solo BTW...played from the heart
There are some guitar players that are more emotive than technics, your phrasing tells a history and puts on it all the emotion required to the audience can live it. Musics as David Gilmore, Gary Moore, Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck plays in theese league.
Gilmour's solo sounds incredibly dramatic, Petrucci's solo sounds like an excellent performance of an exercise in a guitar lesson. Yes, Petrucci has the right notes, but he doesn't have the feeling that makes Gilmour's music unique.
I'm sorry you can't see Gilmore live. I finally saw him play at the Hollywood Bowl last month, and it was amazing. He is truly one of the top 5 guitarists of all time.
Well, for starters, Gilmore wrote it. Petrucci coved it, he covered it very well, but he was not the originator. And the last part was a 3 part harmony so Wilton and Sone could join in. Both are excellent.
You explained the reason for this video and some people just don't get it. Very sad. Your passion is what music is about. Your cover is fantastic!! Thanks for the video.
My two favorite guitarists. David has more soul than anyone and John has more technical skill than just about anyone. Comfortably numb is David Gilmour at his greatest, and not even John can match it. PS. That is the greatest version of that solo ever played. I can’t get enough of it. I’ve probably watched live at Pompeii a hundred times and that solo even more. Brilliant!
I normally gravitate towards guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai, Malmsteen and Satriani etc. However, my favourite guitarist has always been David Gilmour. How do you explain this contradiction?
Both Solos are great. I really could not pick a winner, the are slightly different but so will two different versions of the same solo by the same person properly be.
There is only ONE Comfortably Numb guitar solo - and that belongs to DG, not JP. JP has put his take on it, but, he would be horrified to hear that some people think that ludicrous speed beats taste, dynamics, soul, passion. I love JP's work, but this one belongs to DG. Obviously ;)
In Argentina, when someone doesn't live up to the challenge/task or is simply not good enough we say "he needs a lot of soup to..." In this context, Petrucci needs a lot of soup to even come close to Gilmour.
Greetings to Argentina from Bulgaria. When you can, say hello to Damian Salazar from me. I watched him on the street in Rio playing the guitar in 2010 when I was on a trip to Argentina. Remarkable. I liked it a lot. I am subscribed and I watch his performances on UA-cam with great pleasure.
Firstly, the "other" 2 guys are Michael Wilton, and Mike Stone from QUEENSRYCHE. The performance you showed was taken from QUEENSRYCHE's Art of Live DVD, to coincide with their "Art of Life" tour where them and DT toured together....This was part of the encore where both bands came out, and did a few songs together... Secondly, while Petrucci is a master, I'm sure he would even say Gilmour based on tone, feel and the fact that Gilmour wrote it....
I agree with you about the other guys kind of interfering with Petrucci's solo, when they came on I was like wtf are these guys doing here... Petrucci's great, but Gilmour is speechless, he is more of a blues kind of musician, and he is the author of the solo ...
Oh my man. I couldn’t agree more. I FEEL Gilmour’s solos in my soul. I myself may have gotten a little emotional listening to this one on this video lol. BTW, I thought your cover sounded fantastic.
At this moment, I can tell you, John plays incredible and for sure with far more technique and difficulty, and that’s he’s style, and no one can deny he is a guitar god, but there are some guitarists that only using the B minor pentatonic scale can make you touch heaven, a bunch of well played notes with a lot of feeling and a lot grove, and that’s Guilmore’s power. And each one of them are great guitarist and both are unrepeatable and unique❤
Petrucci, è un indiscusso fenomeno. Tecnica paurosa. Note piene di cuore, intrise zeppe di cuore. Sopra a tutti. Gusti personali. Ciaooooooooo Grazie per il bel video. 👍👋👋👋🎸. Lorenzo.
My two favorite guitarists. David has more soul than anyone and John has more technical skill than just about anyone. Comfortably numb is David Gilmour at his greatest, and not even John can match it.
It’s all about tone…the “way” it is played…Petrucci knows his stuff, but I don’t even consider him an elite guitarist, like Gilmour, Schenker, Leifson, Howe, etc.
Fifty years from now, David Gilmour and his musical genius will still be discussed daily. As technically "superior" as Petrucci is, outside of a niche fanbase, nobody is gonna be talking about Dream Theater and/or John Petrucci. I enjoy DT as much as anyone. But, in the big picture of musical legacy, John Petrucci and Dream Theater aren't even in the same universe as David Gilmour and Pink Floyd. They aren't just a "once in a lifetime" talent. They are a "only once, ever" talent, and we should be grateful we were alive at the same time as them.
Pompei 2016 his best for me and 1988 rome i think. Gilmour is the boss what to discuss but if we discuss about it... every note has time to create an emotion. Glimour is for the people, Petruci is for musicians and perfectionists. Petruci can play things not many can but Gilmour like santana ,clapton, page could play at a level that u cant reach with shreds, lots of notes, very fast tempo and with technique at a level of boring perfect. Simple. Those guitarists can play and make u travel to another universe. The other ones they can play but they make u travel to the next country at best! Just my opinion, i admire both and Petruci is very high level in general!
Gilmour easily . Doesnt try rush the chords . Let's them linger and ring out instead of trying too push extra notes in. Your fab aswel . You let the tone ring out. .
Petrucci certainly plays a nice solo, but his cadence doesn't match Gilmour's on the slower parts of it. It's not as rich sounding, and it doesn't leave enough space for the notes to breathe (especially in comparison to Gilmour's vibrato from his fingers) - more tempo is not always better and it sounds like they're rushing to get to the shredding bit at the end.
I think even your parrot knows the answer to this question. I saw David on the 10th at MSG, and it was unbelievable. I'm lucky enough to have seen him 3 times.
I love David Gilmour, i saw him in Rome and i really hope that Luck and Strange will be his last tour. He made some mistakes but his playing is still emotional and full of passion. Anyways the challenge is not even close. No one can play DG solos like DG. And talking about slow solos, i think "5 am" is the peak
Let's just enjoy the fact that Petruci plays this to pay tribute to one of his musical heroes

I didnt get past 18seconds of your intro because the solo example you used for Gilmour was from Time and not Comfortably Numb
I would listen to either version live and be happy. Nobody will ever recreate an original with the same feel and the exact same emotion.
It really is magic, man... I was lucky enough to see him twice this tour. Highlight of my life
There is only ONE Comfortably Numb guitar solo - and that belongs to DG, not JP.
Haha that's cool.
Yeah Petrucci is. GOD in his own style but he needs to eat more soup and practice Comforfably Numb
In Portugal too!
Petrucci sold his soul to play that good but then his playing lost just that: soul.
No one can top Gilmour. Not even reach his knees. Any improvisation is built on the solo that Gilmour wrote, which sums up and ends the debate.
🎸
I agree with you about the other guys kind of interfering with Petrucci's solo, when they came on I was like wtf are these guys doing here... Petrucci's great, but Gilmour is speechless, he is more of a blues kind of musician, and he is the author of the solo ...
🤘🏻🤘🏻🍻🍻
Oh my man. I couldn’t agree more. I FEEL Gilmour’s solos in my soul. I myself may have gotten a little emotional listening to this one on this video lol. BTW, I thought your cover sounded fantastic.
David ❤❤❤❤
At this moment, I can tell you, John plays incredible and for sure with far more technique and difficulty, and that’s he’s style, and no one can deny he is a guitar god, but there are some guitarists that only using the B minor pentatonic scale can make you touch heaven, a bunch of well played notes with a lot of feeling and a lot grove, and that’s Guilmore’s power. And each one of them are great guitarist and both are unrepeatable and unique❤
This is not a real question…DAVID GILMOUR BY FAR!
As much as I love JP's playing, there is only one player who knows what this solo is for and that's David.
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Petrucci, è un indiscusso fenomeno.
Tecnica paurosa.
Note piene di cuore, intrise zeppe di cuore.
Sopra a tutti.
Gusti personali.
Ciaooooooooo
Grazie per il bel video.
👍👋👋👋🎸.
Lorenzo.
David is so much more melodic and thoughtful with his riffs. He doesnt need to shred. That's what sets them apart.
I don't understand the question. David Gilmour of course !!!
I saw David's concert that you show live and it was one of the most INCREDIBLE emotions of my life....GILMOUR is the greatest guitarist ever
Was that the pulse version?
My two favorite guitarists. David has more soul than anyone and John has more technical skill than just about anyone. Comfortably numb is David Gilmour at his greatest, and not even John can match it.
It’s all about tone…the “way” it is played…Petrucci knows his stuff, but I don’t even consider him an elite guitarist, like Gilmour, Schenker, Leifson, Howe, etc.
Technical ability vs a master of his own style. Apples and oranges.
No way, no discussion, Petrucci is a magic and wonderful guitar player, but Gilmour is.. THE FUCKING MASTER..
Does he know gilmour is part of Pink Floyd?
Great job man!
Gilmour easily . Doesnt try rush the chords . Let's them linger and ring out instead of trying too push extra notes in.
Your fab aswel . You let the tone ring out. .
Are you kidding me? It's light and day. Gilmour's solo blows Petrucci's solo out of the water.
Speed doesn't make you the best guitarist
John is great but my point is that Slow solos aren't the Easiest all the times
@Iliya.Guitar Gilmour sound is only his.None else can play pink floyd solos as him
That applies to everything, it's his music he came up with it of course no one is gonna play it like him@@GigiGiogi-g9f
@@mahmam3128 So ,i do not understand why to compare Gilmour with another guitarist.
@@GigiGiogi-g9f yeah it's weird, guitar guys treat it as some kind of a competition instead of just enjoying the music
I think you yourself played the solo much better that John Petrucci
