It's really great to have a real doctor who knows how to properly interpret research, not just some youtuber claiming this and that because ONE study said it.
Finastride is truly amazing for those who does not get any sides. As someone who has the most aggressive hair loss (my two brothers were Norwood 7 by 28-30), not to mention aggressive retrograde alopecia as well, all my cousins in both families are Norwood 6-7 by 30. I am 32 and have managed to keep 90% of my hair. Unfortunately I experienced bad side effects from finasteride and had to quit. However, using minoxidil + microneedling saved my hair. I strongly believe that DHT is related to blood circulation, which in turn due to low supply leads to hair loss. I used a derma roller + minoxidil and kept losing hair. Once I switched to a high-quality pen, within two months my shedding stopped and my hair started to get thicker by month 4 with a lot of new growth. I have followed this protocol for 5 years and haven't lost ground. It's possible-just be consistent. use a good Pen and do NOT skip sessions. If it worked for me, it should work for EVERYONE.
I am a patient of Dr. Linkov. I had my transplant on 12/05/23. Could not be more pleased. I have been and am also on medical therapy on both finasteride and minoxidil oral forms to support my hair plan. I have no noticeable side effects. In actuality, both have done for me exactly what they were meant to do, prior to my transplant. My recession has stoped and I have noticed a thickening in the salvageable follicular units. I hope this helps those that have been wondering about their path.
Happy to hear this. And well done to use someone like Dr Linkov. Some people like you can just breeze with oral Min and Fin. It’s trial and error. Everyone is different.
How long you been taking the tablets, and how much grafts have you had , and when did you start taking tablets was it early then surgery or just after surgery??

Been taking topical for 2 years. Absolutely no side effects and my hair has improved tremendously. Went from a Norwood 3 and worsening, with significant follicle shrinkage,to a Norwood 2,,,and stable. I am over 50 and this is the Best my hair has looked since my 20’s. I would compare my results to a 1200-1500 hair transplant.
Left out an important fact. My hair stylist is dumb founded at my new hair! Lol. While cutting my hair she started making comments. One time, she was combing through my hair and was like “have you changed anything lifestyle wise? You have all these new hairs sprouting” or, “I can’t understand how that small bald spot on your crown has gone away”? Another thing to note is that almost immediately I sprouted dormant hairs on my temples….like day 4 I noticed them when looking in the rear view mirror of my car. Am I a hyper responder? Idk,,,but this stuff has turned my life around. I think thus far i have about 1200 bucks invested,,so about 600 per year to keep what I got. That is not an issue for me, but I could see how that may be a concideration for some.
took fin pills, got side effects. I wrote off fin for years after that. Started pills again. got side again. Started topical fin/min combo. NO sides, and hair is looking good. My anecdotal experience says that topical fin is the way to go.
@Burnenwhysee out of interest what side effects did you experience? I've been taking fin 1mg for a month and a bit and I think im getting some side effects.
Thank you Dr. Linkov for everything you do in providing detailed information. Your video is very educational and appreciated. I truly enjoy watching all your videos and the time you take to explain everything.
I'm 21. My hair started thinning pretty badly on my temples, I've always had a higher hairline so it became really noticeable. I initially tried oral finesteride and had bad side effects. I switched to a combo finesteride and minoxidil topical product. It's been about two weeks and I've had great results so far without any side effects. Hair is much thicker and feels healthier. Smoother texture and doesn't feel dry or stiff like it used to.
Good for you! I wish I had thought about medical therapy for my hair loss when I was younger. I hope that because you are taking action at a young age that you will be able to stop the thinning (finasteride) and get back some recent loss (minoxidil) and never need a hair transplant.
I take topical Fin + Min from HIMS and it’s worked wonders for me. I’ve been on it for around a year and 5 months and not only have I retained my hair but I’ve grown a lot that I lost, I went from a NW5 to a NW2, my transplant cost (consult) from 23k to 7-11k in the US. I
I had hair transplant surgery in Turkey back in April. Overall, I am extremely happy with the results. People don’t believe that I got it done because it looks so natural. I am using finasteride topical solution combined with minoxidil. There’s no itching/side effects the only thing is scalp/hair looks dry, so I started using coconut/Olive oil at least once every two weeks to combat the dryness....
I had also hair transplant in Turkey for 7 weeks ago. May i know how long after you began with Min and Fin? Becouse i dont know how long I have to wait
@@amiram88 Four weeks following the operation, once all the scabs disappeared, some people might do it around 2-3 weeks after the operation. Normally, your doctor will provide specific time when you should be able, mine told me around 2 weeks after but I waited few more weeks.
Hello, Dr. Linkov, and thank you for another detailed video. I've been dealing with hair loss for the past couple of years and only recently went to see a dermatologist about it. They diagnosed me with androgenic alopecia and prescribed topical 5% minoxidil + 0.1% finasteride in trichofoam. After one month of applying it every evening I haven't noticed any side effects, I'm able to see new hairs sprouting and I feel eager to see how the regrowth progresses by the time I have to schedule my 3-month appointment. Watching your videos boosted my confidence in the treatment and gave me hope I'll eventually be able to regrow most my lost hair. Thank you!
Thanks doc for all your amazing contributions to informing the public about all these procedures. Your honesty really speaks for itself. Please keep the videos coming. 🙏 My hairline started to recess in my 20s but now in my 40s it has slowed down a lot. The center is still pretty much at the original position and I only have these typical balding inlets you see with Norwood stage 2. Getting bald never bothered me. I have a nice round head for it and at some point I just shaved and never looked back. I trim to 3-6 mm's and haven't been in a hairsalon for two decades as I just trim myself. Recently though I stopped trimming for about 2 months and I've come to realize I actually still have a lot of hair so I started to think it could actually be nice to have a full head of hair again. Your videos made me think about having a transplant and I've already decided to start using finasteride + minoxidil to fully stabilize my situation and perhaps even see some natural restoration. Choosing to undergo surgery is another matter of course. I don't live in the US otherwise I'd definitely knock on your door. 😎 But all your input has definitely given me a good basis to know what qualities to look for in a doctor and a team. There's no need to rush it of course. Best of luck with your channel!
I feel like the sexual side effects of finasteride are grossly underestimated. Depending on the study and how they gauge it, it can be 15% of men taking it. That is really high! I was prescribed it and my doctor never even mentioned it was a possibility. Also it reduced my body hair and made the amount of body hair I had like a little boy or a woman. Another side effect no one warned me of. Maybe it's a side effect some men would welcome but I like having body hair.
I agree. I tried finasteride and development gynecomastia. It was quite painful. Here's the kicker. Why did I take finasteride? To halt hair loss. My doctor gave me two options to address the gynecomastia. Since I was "early stage" I could try Tamoxifen or go for Surgery. I went with Tamoxifen and it did eliminate the problem. But I noticed my hair loss seemed accelerated. So I read up on Tamoxifen. It is classed as a chemo therapy and it can cause hair loss. Thankfully my hair seems to be growing back. Drugs are out for me. I am using LLLT and a shampoo that has natural DHT reducers in it.
@@randyvolters7719which shampoo are you using? I am using ketaconzole and healthy coconut conditioner but I feel like my hair gets greasy in a matter of hours
Thank you again for your extremely intelligent discussion on these products. Always a pleasure to listen to your show. I'm thinking about taking oral minoxidil instead of topical. I already take 1 MG of finasteride daily. Is this a better or equal choice? Thank you.
Does anyone here have the same experience as me? I experienced something strange when using any product aimed at growing hair (you name it all like serum, minoxidil+finasteride, laser therapy, even natural oils). Not a side effect in general, but I would experience difficulty sleeping and not feel sleepy at all at night when I used these products. I know you might think "oh that's just your feeling", but believe me, I've experienced it myself, experimenting on myself by using hair growth products for 1 week and not using hair growth products the next week. As a result, when I stopped using all of that, my sleep became normal and there were no problems. When I used the product, I felt like anxious but not to hard (my breathing and heartbeat were normal). I've been doing it for the last year (experimenting 1 week using it and 1 week not). Do I have an allergy to certain substances that seep into my bloodstream? because that applies to the skincare that I use too. There doesn't seem to be any chemical/natural ingredients that can be absorbed by my skin.
I had taken oral Finasteride and had great results with controlling and reversing my hair loss. But, I experienced negative side effects. Mainly Gynecomastia, which I still have and always will unless I have removal surgery. I just started topical Finasteride and Minoxidil combo, with great results and so far no negative side effects.
good to hear, I been taking oral finasteride and looking to switch to topical finasteride/minxodil spray. How soon after stopping oral finasteride can one start to use topical finasteride?
@@erickburgos8242 You would need to ask your doctor. I had not taken oral finasteride in over 14 years, before starting the topical, and my hair loss had progressed to Norwood 5-6, it has been moving toward 4-5 in just 3 months of starting the topical mixture. I want to incorporate micro needling. Because I have researched and seen that it increases the results 3 to 4 fold.
I don’t use Top Fin but I’m super glad so far my oral 1mg has given very minimal side effects which are pretty much getting weaker. But they are super minor minimal related to libido
Sir do you take online appointments? I am from India and worried about my hair loss, your channel has always comforted with with its content, I really need your help.
I prefer topical finasteride on it's own -- since I want to use Fin for a long period before assessing if I need to add Minoxdil. I've used topical Min in the past (Rogaine), and got side effects from it (contact dermatitis) and sharp chest pain. The less modalities, the better, since once you commit -- then it's a lifelong thing. Also, oral Finasteride is MUCH cheaper than topical in addition to being more reliable and consistent with it's results. I would like to try a combo of oral and topical Fin later, to see if I can reduce sides.
Personal experience on finasteride, melatonin, bimatoprost, and tretinoin mix topical. I've been applying for just over a year. First 3 months, no hair changes, infact I had more hair falling off. At 6 months my doctor strengthened the mix. Just over a year I've had significant hair regrowth and significant changes in hair density. My hair has become much darker and stronger. Application is 2 times a day. I get why people would want to take the tablet. For the convenience. But honestly speaking, i find the topical being more effective. Anyone hesitant, just do it! My only wish is that i should have started sooner.
I'm currently on 0.5% finasteride, Melatonin 0.1%, Bimatoprost 0.03%, Tretinoin 0.01%. However, you need to gradually increase the strength. You can't start off with this as it will cause skin irritation. The maximum dose i believe is 0.5%. Also, if you're not allergic to minoxidil, you can also add that into this mix.
@dadoslav1 it will shed at first, but that is part of the process. You will shed, and revive new stronger hairs. But you need to be consistent. The longer you use it the more it'll work. But bear in mind it is a very slow process.
Unfortunately, I tried Hims topical solution with 6% Minoxidil and 0.3 finasteride, and I had a reaction on my skin, creating pink itching rashes all over my body, but specially on my face, neck and chest - it could be due to the propylene glycol that's present in the formula, but up to this day I do not have any answers from the Hims team, or a way to get a patch test, so the best solution is to see a dermatologist to provide the best solution.
I have been taking Finasteride 5mg every 5 days, for a few years now, and it is working fine. Recently I am thinking of taking the 1mg everyday instead, wondering would it be better? thank you very much in advance for your answer(s).
@@Bakanelliyou need to eat 3 meals a day, is it better for your to eat 3 meals a day? Or is it better to let you eat 3 times the amount but only once a day?
@@omgwowgg hahaha; I misread what were you saying - I thought that you were taking 5mg per day! Now the nerdy part I calculated: It takes approximately 46.5 hours for the effectiveness of 5 mg of Finasteride to fall below 0.05 mg (which is the point in looses effectiveness in 5-alpha-reductase suppression 5AR) in the body, given a half-life of about 7 hours. Meaning if you were taking 5mg every 5 days only the first 2 days your 5AR was suppressed and the other 3 days your body was rebuilding 5AR and therefore increasing DHT in your body - bad idea. By taking 1mg per day 5AR is constantly suppressed.
@@Bakanellithank you for explaining that, I thought it would be the same, the reason I takes 5mg every 5 days is because it's a lot cheaper to do so, at 1/3 of the price in comparison to 1mg per day, I've been taking 5mg every 5 day for over 7 years now, now you made me think twice on keep doing this.
Hi Dr Linkov could you please answer my this Question ? i would like to know if you do not have hair pattern baldness is it even worth taking finasteride , and if you do what would happen if you stop talking it ?
How would you combine Topical Finasterid and Topical Minoxidil? Finasterid you have to apply 1x a day, Minoxidil 2x. Do you think you can apply Finasterid and Minoxidil without waiting in between?
On top of missing a headful of hair, studies show that today's men also tend to lack finesse, now if you think this might be a personal problem of yours and you wish to take action and do something about it, you can start today by reaching out to your doctor and ask for a prescription of Finesseteride and see if it's right for you.
Only 28 and rapidly thinning. Making me anxious daily as I don’t want to be bald. However also worried about artificially keeping my head of hair alive with daily chemicals. Should we just accept our bodies and learn to love it? What a dilemma eh? 🤦🏻♂️
A study involving 42 people (split into 3 groups) is not "relatively small", it's tiny. 500 would be a fair number. I don't believe any conclusions can be made from such a small group, except that it needed to be expanded into a larger one.
Hi! Great video! Thank you! Can I use topical finasteride on myself while my wife is pregnant? What kind of exposure is safe/unsafe for her and my unborn?
I am curious what your thoughts are on finasteride vs dutasteride in terms of efficacy and side effects. - Would you ever consider making a video on this? Also thank you for all your great content!
@@aidan5762 he mentioned it in his finasteride video, I believe. Basically, dutasteride is more potent, but also has a higher risk of side effects. I think Dr. L said he'd consider it if fin is not working well/enough.
Hello Dr. Linkov, not sure if you already answered this question in one of your videos but is oral finasteride 1MG better than oral dutasteride 0.5 ? Thank you
I can only take a guess that much of the unreliability with topical has to do with how soon you showered & sweat after applying it.. & how well u covered balding areas. So I try to workout 1st & then apply it shortly after shower on dry or damp hair.
How well does oral Finasteride & oral Minoxidil work with heart valve patients? I'm 36 and not yet balding, but my hair has definitely started showing signs of thinning in the last few years.
Any form of finasteride, any dose, unfortunately makes me feel like I’m going insane. Depression, low-libido, you name it. Decided I’d rather watch my hairline recede than live that way. I use rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil twice a week and massage it into the scalp using scalp massager 10 min and i truly think it is slowing down the hair loss.
Thanks, been waiting for a study like this with the combined topical solutions. Would you recommend micro-needling with the topical Fin + Min solution?
Have you ever come across any data to support microdosing of oral finasteride? For example 1mg PO 3x per week to avoid side effects? The Australian physicians on the “hair loss show “ you tube channel discuss this strategy but have no referenced data. They claim the concentration of finasteride at the follicle is adequate.
I switched to topical finasteride recently because I was getting side effects from oral finasteride. The dosage is 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil. I used to take a 1mg pill 3x per week. How many ml of topical finasteride is equivalent to what I was taking before on oral fin?
From 2013-2020 I maintained hair well with generic oral finasteride and topical rogaine. After covid I stopped maintaining. I stayed on same protocol for 2 years still losing ground daily. In 2023 I switched to oral generic dutasteride and oral minoxidil (5mg)/day bit after a year, I'm still noticeably thinner and continue to lose ground. Since this protocol isn't working, I'm either going to switch to brand name oral Finasteride (brand Dut too expensive) or topical versions of both. Thoughts? Any input is appreciated.
Hello. Could microneedling interfere with a future hair transplant? In one of your past videos, you said that sometimes grafts are difficult to place in the recipient area if there are scars from microneedling. Should I avoid microneedling if I am planning a hair transplant in a year or two?
I took a combination of oral finasteride and topical minoxidil for over 20 years. No side effects and my hair was really thick. (I also had a hair transplant around 25 years ago but back then, the number of grafts was small compared to today’s procedures (around 400 grafts).) Around three years ago, I got concerned that I was taking oral finasteride for so many years so I stopped taking it. With just topical minoxidil, I was fine for two years. However, last year I started seeing more hair loss. I switched to oral minoxidil but it didn’t stop it. I just started taking the topical combo minoxidil/finasteride and still taking the oral minoxidil. The hair loss is getting less after 2 months. But still more hair loss than when I took oral finasteride. I will try the topical finasteride for four more months and then reevaluate. I don’t know if I will go back on the oral finasteride. So I am a one person clinical trial!
Not really. Smaller amount of ejaculate but no loss of libido. But just concerned about taking an oral medication for over 20 years for a non life threatening condition. But I loved having full hair for all those years! I still mostly have the hair except some thinning at the crown since I stopped taking the oral. Hopefully the topical will bring back most of the lost hair.
@@z7531 was your hair loss quite mild anyway then? Did you ever have kids while on fin? Some people told me their orgasms were weaker on fin because of the ejaculation volume. Is it that much of a difference in volume or feeling?
I would say the hair loss was somewhat mild. But without the small grafts, minoxidil, and finasteride, it would have been much worse, so hard to say. I didn’t have children then so I don’t know if smaller cum shots would have made a difference. I don’t know if there are any studies on finasteride and fertility (or the male version of fertility). I know there are a lot of things for you to consider, but a lot of people take these products with no problems. If you do have a problem, you can just stop. Good luck!
Thanks for all the videos. Enjoyed them a lot. I've been on finasteride and minoxidil for a year now, seeing a very significant improvement. Can adding PRP/PRF treatment give another significant improvement?
Iv been on finastride for 5 years with no issues. Had to stop 6 months ago due to these awful side effects. I tired to get answers everywhere but end of the day the body does change. So I can’t take it anymore.
My dermatologist actually told me they are told not to prescribe finasteride because of the side effects. That said, he was open to me trying the topical fin!
that's very strange. are you in the US? Finasteride has been well studied and tolerated for decades and used by tens of millions of men around the world.

Dr Linkov Can I please get some advice . Back in October 2022 I started shedding alot of my hair . After contemplating a hair transplant and watching many UA-cam videos , I started to use hims topical finasteride and minoxidil . I was pleasantly surprised by the results the shedding stopped and hair started the regrow . Downside less erections and low sexual desire . After one year, a trip to visit Thailand was made and I decided to to take a break from hims topical solution. Total break time was 1 month . Shedding started again :-( While in Thailand I was able to buy tablet minoxidil 5mg . I've watched many UA-cam videos on minoxidil. So I started taking oral minoxidil December 2023 first dose was 1.25mg once daily . I upped doseage to 2.5mg after 2 weeks . No side effects except itchy scalp . I have also resumed the topical hims product. Your views please would be greatly appreciated.
Dear Dr. Linkov, what if one was to wash out the topical finasteride early. Could one in that way maybe keep it local at the hair follicle and reduce the effect on serum dht? I understand the effectiveness would presumably be lower in that case. But my question is does that logic make sense: would you reduce transdermal flux but still do some good for hair follicle.
My biggest life regret is not taking fin for my hairloss in my 20's, since doctors don't prescribe it for hairloss in my country. I became a NW6+ by the age of 24 as a result, and the lack of hair completely destroyed my dating and career prospects. The only thing that could save me would be a real cure but that likely won't happen in our lifetime. Take finasteride, people. Save yourselves while you can, life as a 20-something slaphead is utterly miserable
How often should the topical Fin/Minox be applied? Once or twice daily? Is it 1 mil each time? If I get it from a compounding pharmacy near me, should I look for anything in particular in how they compound it?
Minoxidil has a life of 21 hours so once a day is fine. Finasteride is also taken once a day . The solution should not have alcohol as it irritates the scalp. Be careful with the dosage
Is there any important inflammatory process(es) involved with whatever stimulating process(es) that either finasteride or minoxidil offers, that shouldn't be hindered (through stuff such as quercetin, vitamin c, h1/h2 blockers, curcumin, darkcolored berrys, etc etc)?
Hello, I may be interested in a propylene glycol free topical. But what is used as a substitute for propylene glycol and is it effective? Glycerin? Besides finasteride, any other active/inactive ingredients in it?

Dr. Linkov, I’m unfortunately not in the US and am unable to get my hands on the finasteride topical solution. I’m currently only using topical minoxidil, because I quit oral finasteride after negative side effects after using it for 6 months. Are combined finasteride and minoxidil topical solutions (that most companies sell) as effective?
Hey man. I'm using Essengen-6 Plus (Google it) for 1.5 years now. Works great, no sides. It's a combination of minox and fina in one solution. They advice 1ml twice a day, but onlt 0.5ml twice a days does the work for me.
Ive been on oral fin and topical minoxidil for 3 years and have gone from a Norwood 4 or 5 to a 2. Very happy with my results. Thinking about stopping the minoxidil cause i feel like i maxed out my regrowth. Also use a dermapen for microneedleing
I'm holding at Norwood 2 taking 1mg oral finasteride per day & using minoxidil. I tried stopping minoxidil for 1 month, but noticed significantly more hairs falling out when I gelled my hair in the morning. So, I started again. I think the minoxidil does more than you think.
@@catvador9145 not true, the hairs you regrew thanks to minoxidil WILL fall if you stop minoxidil. Minoxidil increases blood flow to that area, if you stop, the blood stops and the hair dies again
If your taking oral fin and instantly getting side effects try halving the dose and duration and work up from there before completely quitting. Worked for me and my friend.
Only a small % get side effects and they resolve if you stop taking it. The fear mongering about Finasteride online is way out of a proportion and mostly from conspiracy theorists and hypochondriacs.
For topical Fin + Minxo compounding pharmacy usually just blend it with alcohol which causes dryness and irritation. What's the best carrier agent that's gentle and easy to apply?

Hello, Dr. Linkov, and thank you for another detailed video. I've been dealing with hair loss for the past couple of years and only recently went to see a dermatologist about it. They diagnosed me with androgenic alopecia and prescribed topical 5% minoxidil + 0.1% finasteride in trichofoam. My hairline started to recess in my 20s but now in my 40s it has slowed down a lot.

My only wish is that i should have started sooner.
what % of topical?
What percentage did you get
I'm currently on 0.5% finasteride, Melatonin 0.1%, Bimatoprost 0.03%, Tretinoin 0.01%.
However, you need to gradually increase the strength. You can't start off with this as it will cause skin irritation. The maximum dose i believe is 0.5%. Also, if you're not allergic to minoxidil, you can also add that into this mix.

Why would 1mg be better?????
5mg sounds pretty rational to take since it’s cheaper and as far I remember a little more effective than 1mg

Could you generate some sort of tolerance to finasteride of minoxidil by taking them for a long time?
Finasteride selectively inhibits the Type 2 isoenzyme whereas dutasteride inhibits both Type 1 and Type 2 5AR
Wrong. Fin inhibits type 2 and 3 and Dut inhibits 1 2 and 3

Happy to see this posted. Was thinking about using topical, but petrified of side effects.
Sexual health is way more important than hair, imo
Read the comments again someone been on it 20 yrs said its good, another two years. Good luck
Topical doesn't go systemic like a pill.
@@labornurseyes it does lol.
@@Adam-M1nope it doesn't
Only a small % get side effects and they resolve if you stop taking it.
The fear mongering about Finasteride online is way out of a proportion and mostly from conspiracy theorists and hypochondriacs.
For topical Fin + Minxo compounding pharmacy usually just blend it with alcohol which causes dryness and irritation. What's the best carrier agent that's gentle and easy to apply?
Thoughts on Dutasteride?
How do you feel about companies like "Hims" and "keeps"!
Doctor Gary Linkov .. where can I find your hat? .. Best regards, Daniel.
