This process is so inspiring -- like your monoprinting technique, this requires only the most simple of materiels, yet yields (in your hands) truly amazing art. You demystify the arcane and make it accessible to us. Thank you so much for sharing this and giving a glimpse at your creative process.
Thanks for your comment, this is a great technique to experiment with and it is surprising when you see the results. I will try to film a few more of these "Inspired by.... " series of videos.
I love wax and chalk resist... on paper and also fabric. Your ability to use light and dark and shadow awes me. Thank you for these - along with morning yoga meditation. Great combo.
Absolutely love watching you create. Not sure about the other viewers, but I actually prefer no music at all--just the sounds of you doing your thing. Thanks so much for sharing. Your talent is awe-inspiring!
Thanks, I try to get the balance right and keep the music to a very low volume so the sounds of the activity can still be heard. I will try to film a few with no music at all. I appreciate your comments.
@@DanTirels Hi Dan, I had a go using D-Rowney mixed media paper but didn't work very well. I think I just overworked it. Then tried on Canson oil and acrylic paper and results were great! Can't show you but thanks for the inspiration! Stay safe
I really enjoyed watching you work through these drawings... as always encouraging, inspiring, instructive... and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you, Dan. :)
Watching this has been the highlight of my day - thanks Dan. There's something very freeing about your work. Difficult to put into words - I want to say it's very punk rock but wouldn't want to offend you. You give someone like me, who isn't very technical art-wise, permission to have a go and I love it, especially at times like now. I get lost in the process and couldn't really care less about the end result. Keep safe mate & thanks again.
Thank you for your positive response to this demo. I'm really pleased that it seems to have had lots of good feedback and I hope it does help to create a few stress free moments for viewers. I will be working on more of these "Inspired by" videos and offering a variety of techniques to explore, I think we do all need that right now. As with all the demos the process and the enjoyment of experimenting is the most important, if you have a good piece of art at the end, that's just a bonus!
This was very calming to watch. Wax resist is something I haven't tried and I love the effect of it's beautiful simplicity. It's on my to-do list. Thanks for sharing.
I was fortunate enough to come across your mono print video a few weeks ago, I’m hooked! So I was please to find this video today, I find your work inspiring and love the way you demystify process. I have been pleased with the mono prints and look forward to adding this new technique to my experiences. I like the one comment of, “getting loss in the process an not worrying about the results”. I need to do that it the process not the results. Thank you I will keep that in mine. Namaste
Thank you for your positive comments, I'm pleased that you enjoy the demos and hope they are useful. I will try to film a variety of new techniques and encourage others to give them a try.
Hey Dan, thanks for this, I just spent a happy afternoon having a go at this and and really enjoyed it. Well something similar TBH. I don't have any wax crayons so I used a tea light that my wife buys from Ikea, and she's Chinese so she has ink, but only red and black, and a Typhoon is blowing through so no going to the art shop. Nevertheless, I really liked what I created. I did try wet watery acrylic and some of my wife's watercolours, but didn't like the result. But I like how the ink works. I think I mentioned before that as I'm in China one of the influences is the wet ink work of the Chinese artists so a double bonus for me here. Thanks again, I do enjoy watching your videos and they inspire me so much. Pity I can't post an image here for you to have a look at. I'll be in the UK Monday so Ill be getting some wax crayons you can be sure. Best wishes.
Hi Dan, I have enjoyed many of your monoprinting videos and practiced your style and techniques for awhile. this video offers another fun thing to try when I need a prompt. This video, however, I had a hard time watching and finally jumped to the end. Why? That paint brush! Please Dan, buy yourself a nice new paintbrush. Your worth it!!!!
Thanks, that has been pointed out before and I know it might be controversial but I really do like to use old tatty brushes, I think I like the added texture. Maybe I could use a new brush just when I film the videos.
Hello Dan, I like your video's very much. The strikes, the colors, your movements. I have 2 Questions. Why don't you draw with black water resistant crayon? And why do you use that terrible brush. I think it gives you something that you like, but I don't know why.
I thought someone would notice that brush! I agree it has seen better days, A larger brush would be more use for this work. I have a lot of old brushes used for adding texture. I used the charcoal just because I thought it would be an interesting technique to try. A black wax crayon would also be a good choice.
Dan, your work is amazing and inspires me to try making prints and now I want to try this wax resist method too. What kind of inks are you using for this? I may try some water colours with it, but the ink you use has such an intensity to it. Thanks for this!
Thanks very much for your response to this demo, glad you enjoyed it. The ink I use here is the excellent Winsor & Newton drawing ink which is available in a great selection of colours. I recommend having a try. Watercolour or acrylic paints would also work.
@@DanTirels Thanks for the speed reply! I will try the Winsor and Newton inks great products for sure! Cheers and please keep sharing... I find your videos very interesting and inspirational... especially those on mono-prints!
I like it real good simple but have spression filing great colors combined and this is to me how I see art don't give me a picture detail that only show you have a good skills not creativity this yes any time Good
Thanks Dan for all the lovely videos 😊 it's so cool and relaxing. I love the way you work. Your hand is flying so lightly and the outcome is beautiful. I would like to try this technique. Is it ok to use kids oil pastels instead of wax? Can it work?
I sometimes use a cheap hairspray in the early stages, then a final fixative spray when the artwork is finished. I sometimes use an acrylic varnish spray.
@@DanTirels thanks! I didn't want to use fixative (workable fixative) in the house due to my asthma, so I put a layer of matte medium down on my gelli plate and fixed my charcoal drawing that way instead.
The paper used for this demo is a thick card 220gsm, because you use so much water for this, use a thicker paper and it would be best to tape it down with masking tape.

What a wonderful tutorial in loose drawing and the wax resist. Very inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you, hope you give it a try.
This has inspired a whole series of pieces by me. Loving this series. Exploring artist via process not product is pretty amazing
Thank you, I have more of these planned because it is always inspiring to look at the work of other artists.
The colors are incredible

Hi my friend. Wonderful artworks. Love them.
Could you please tell me the paper you are using? Many thanks and keep them coming.

yes I know, I really should invest in a few new brushes.
What kind of paper are you using ? can this be done on canvas ? wonderful work.
This is a heavyweight card (300gsm) or you could use cartridge paper, I will experiment with canvas and post a demo soon.

this terribly bad brush disturbs me a little bit in that really very good video; I even would not give a brush like this to a child.

I think it may work but it is worth experimenting with. I have not used oil pastels much. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your feedback.
I had the best results with Christmas-candles!
Jut got your book! " Monoprinting: A guide to basic tech"
Thanks very much I hope you enjoy looking through it.
Dan Tirels i will! But right now im truly enjoying watching your videos!
Around 23:00 mark, starts out looking very stoic, like Mt. Rushmore! :-)
I wonder if the wax resist method would work on a stretched canvas? One that had more gesso added to it?
I think that would work. Might give that a try.
Hi Dan just bought your booklet and subscribed - catching up on your videos - they're inspirational. Can I ask are the crayons wax or chalk?
Oops ! Just spotted in the title they're wax
Thanks for buying the booklet, hope it helps.
What do you do with all your art pieces, demos? I am in the USA. Some are small.
They are kept, or sometimes sold. I do paint over some of the larger canvases.
which type of spray fixative, there are several from workable to final fixative. TIA
What’s the spray for? :)
As always, great work
To keep the vine charcoal from smearing.
NowI'mMe thx for your reply, makes sense :), do you also know whats in the spray?
Joey, fixative, but you can use hairspray if you can't get to the shop.
@@rcsart6409 Hmmm, lots of us don't use & haven't got hairspray! Maybe spray varnish might work but that repels paint?
Yes that would work also, I do use that myself. Hairspray is a good substitute because it is so cheap.
What size and weight for the paper??
Use a heavyweight paper as the technique uses so much water. A 200gsm cartridge paper should be OK.
What type paper
The paper used for this demo is a thick card 220gsm, because you use so much water for this, use a thicker paper and it would be best to tape it down with masking tape.
Brush is so bad quality...bent!!
It's of no importance.
Wonderful
