Monoprinting with stencils with oil paint and oil stick.
FREE monoprint now included with each order of the monoprinting booklet (limited supply)
    www.dantirels....
Thank you to everyone who has bought a copy of my new mono-printing booklet, it really is appreciated and is incredible support for this channel. I hope to continue to bring you many more interesting and varied demo videos and the booklet will ensure that this is possible.
All booklets now include 2 FREE 5" x 7" art prints and a 100% biodegradable bag that you can use for the mono-printing techniques. (as seen in this demo)
This new demo is featured in the booklet and looks at the process of working with hand-cut stencils. Unlike the example shown in the booklet, I am working with acrylic paint rather than oil paint. I create a base using 3 colours of acrylic and then use an oil stick to complete the final layer.
My monoprinting booklet is now available from my website.

    Materials :
Acrylic paint: Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, White.
    Sennelier oil stick: Black

Hi Dan, and thank you for this new video. As I wrote some days ago, I am practicing this interesting print technique, with great satisfaction. Here in Italy at present we are secluded in our homes owing to CORONA VIRUS, so I have plenty of time to experience... As I wrote last time, I still believe that oil colors are really warmer and richer than acrylics, BUT... after some tests, I have discovered serious handicaps: drying time is ETERNAL !!! ... and the paper gets stained by oil !! So I have gone back to acrylics. I am testing also METALLIC acrylics in small quantity. I intend to test also some gold/silver patina. Thank you for the inspiration !!!

    • @DanTirels

Sorry to hear about the issues regarding the use of oil paint. All I can advise is the way the paint is applied should result in much shorter drying times. I use very little paint applied in thin layers. Always use a heavyweight paper and if needed apply a primer. Hope this helps. The situation regarding the Corona Virus is very worrying and I really do hope that things will start to improve. Good luck with your creative experiments.

The acrylic paint behaves so differently from the oil paint. I've never used oil paints but from watching your other videos I can see the benefits of using oils. You have so much more time to work. And although I definitely like the visual texture I get from partially-dried acrylic paint, it has become almost predictable. I use slow-drying medium sometimes, but I usually forget. Thanks for sharing your talents! I'll be buying a couple of oils to try it out. Thanks again!

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  4 роки тому

I never used to work with oil paint because I always found them too slow and a bit messy, but this monoprinting technique is a great introduction to oil paint and it is a good idea to start with a few colours first.

This is really cool. It’s a shame that my state and several others in the US have banned plastic shopping bags, which completely kills the opportunity to recycle your grocery bags! This is a really cool way to recycle them, but I would have to buy a plastic bag to use just for this purpose and then throw away, which I think goes completely against what these bans are trying to achieve!

    • @DanTirels

My copy of your booklet arrived yesterday, (Tuesday) it's lovely. There are a lot of good quality illustrations for such a modest book. You obviously spent a lot of time considering the layout and content. This publication will bring imspiration as well as great techniques to a large number of people. I'm very pleased with it, thank you.
I was delighted to discover that one of the two prints of your work which are included, happened to be my favourite, "Artifical Person". I shall frame it and put it in my studio. I like the second print, "Estuary" too, that will also go on my studio wall. Thank you again, it brightened my day.

I'm beginning to think that listening to the wide range of smoke screen recommendations from our government, is like the news, not worth listening, to until it happens. It changes daily. I'm almost 72. One day I can do something, next day I can't. I'm sorry, I apologise, this is not the place for polemic, however justified.
Artificial Person is indeed a masterpiece. Your work deserves a major exhibition, but not for a while of course! I look at your channel daily, just to see what's happening. It takes me out of myself, thank you Dan.

This is one of my favorite pieces, Dan. Especially, I liked how you showed us your contemplative times, turning the piece, considering. In the end, I said to myself, 'That's it,' and the next moment you laid down your tools. I have done some self-taught print work using gel plates, or even repeated printing from a wet palette at the end of a session. It is such a rewarding method. Thank you for the work you put into all aspects of your videos. The music fits the art.

@@DanTirels I know what you mean. I am a scuptor and print maker and have gotten into making quick impulsive monoprints with the left over oil-based ink from my print making. I throw out a lot of monoprints because it is hard to know when to quit when you are working quickly and intuitively and many of them just do not have much punch. But then the ones I keep include some jewels. Thanks for your work. I enjoy seeing what you do.
