Colourful bold abstract progression filmed in real time, working with acrylic paint and charcoal. Shown in full, from blank canvas to finished painting.
I wanted to show how I begin a painting, each stage builds up the composition, the charcoal is sprayed with a fixative and then painted over.
I realise this video is a little too long but I wanted to show the process without using timelapse or too many edits. I have allowed some edits when I need each layer of paint to dry and I didn't film the application of fixative after each layer of charcoal. I will upload a timelapse version of this video, so you can see the whole demo in about 5 minutes.

Thanks for the positive reaction to this latest demo, it means a lot to get such positive comments. I did notice that this particular demo received a thumbs down within 5 minutes of me posting so it had obviously not been watched before giving this verdict, I think this just shows how irrelevant the thumbs down button is, completely pointless.
Bold and courageous and full of unrestricted movements.
Dan...you obviously are quite creative and skilled. Simply ignore the malcontents. You have interested and loyal subscribers who appreciate your demo lessons. I remember reading a particularly nasty comment written about Gerhardt Richter. So, you're in good company and your subscribers appreciate and learn from your work. Keep up your good works, thanks for taking the time to produce your lessons and tune out the noise that spews forth from unsettled minds and angry hearts. Such is the world but you and others, through their artistic endeavors transcend their attempts at bullying from the shadows.

When I was younger I would think abstract as ooohhhh anybody can do that, my dog could do it also. Well of course later, I've seen other works , such as Jackson Pollack, and I studied his and others and realized that it's not about randomly throwing paint down. I love this piece! The whole time I was watching I would vacillate between thinking I didn’t like it, then liking and then not liking. Back and forth. The last pass with charcoal brought it all together. So much depth.

I didn’t expect you to add the cooler colors, but I immediately felt that the painting was better for it. My eye became much more relaxed and the painting gained more depth. It had never occurred to me to use charcoal over paint either, but you did it and I liked that...the boldness came from those harder, sometimes darker lines.

Thanks again, Dan. Personally, I’m grateful that you paint and film in real time. Your demos are never too long. I’m able to follow and absorb every step in your process. This is a beautiful piece of artwork and I can’t wait for the art shop in our local area to open on Monday so that I can buy a canvas and get started. There is an art exhibition that is happening in a suburb near me that is inviting “beginners” to submit their work. May I submit mine, would you consider it breaching copyright law if I did? My interpretation would never be as good as yours because I am indeed a beginner but it would be an attempt to achieve what you teach. I know we have to be careful about these things. Please advise. It's true, I do sometimes forget that the camera is on, makes it more natural.
I like it, very much the colors stand out absolutely beautifully, In highschool my Art teacher taught us this. She kept a lot of my work. I am now selling my Art, I am at a peaceful state when I am working on my art projects❤thanks for sharing.

Just love your gestural mark making and the many layers of it in your work. It is said we all have our own unique marks, almost like fingerprints, that we make intuitively as we work. I have followed your monoprinting and been inspired to use your technique and love it. Love the economy of it and the results! Thanks for your beautiful peaceful videos....new trick for me after reading the comments is fixing the charcoal with hairspray...going to try that! I really do love drawing into my paintings with it but the fixing was always a challenge even with some spray fixatives. Many thanks!

This makes me happy, seeing you using Windsor & Newton Galleria acrylics. I have heard some "art snobs" tell me that these aren't professional acrylics. Idiots! I've sold many canvases with paintings painted with these amazing colors. And the price of these paints is so great, too!
I so agree with that.. When you have it you have it and the brands don't matter.. Most of Dan's work is so loved because he always takes the gas and snoot out of the whole act of art and turns it into something so embraceable so possible

I love to create transparent layers of color and texture to create depth!
I was quite mesmerized watching this. When you started introducing the bluish colours I thought OH NOOO!!....because I thought, that it was almost done, but it soon became clear why you did that. So inspiring to me, as I have only been painting for just under three years, and I love seing different techniques. Just one question, that I don't seem to find the answer to below: when the piece is totally finished, do you lacquer it to finally fix the charcoal, "for the future", so to speak, and if so, do you use spray or a liquid form?
I always use a spray when finished. I spray first with a fixative then apply a few coats of acrylic spray varnish (matt). I don't usually film this as its best done outside.
Beautiful piece! The light pencil marks you make at the very first stages - are these improvised or is there an overall intent for the larger forms in the painting this early in the process? Thank you
I really use these first pencil lines as a guide for the first layer of paint, all improvised but I find it helps to balance the composition. Thanks for watching.

Inspired by your work. It is a joy to watch you work. I would like to know how you fix the charcoal so it is not mixing with the paint. Noticed when you started to work with blues and greens, charcoal did not "dirty" your paint. Did you use some fixative?

Thanks. This really is an exercise in free mark making, I will often do these compositions to relax and loosen up, I think if you improvise and allow the work to evolve it creates an interesting composition that could lead somewhere else. I will try to show in some future video how you could apply this technique to a landscape, figure or still life. Thanks for watching.

I love your videos! Did you seal the charcoal before you started with the blues/greens! The charcoal didn’t seem to smear at that point.
Sometimes I paint over unfixed charcoal because you can get some interesting effects, but I spray with a fixative before adding paint.
Hello! I love this video soooo much :) I'd like to ask what kind of charcoal you use - hard or soft/brittle?
For this I have used a combination of willow charcoal and vine charcoal which is really soft and great for using to add finer lines, the willow is good for blocking in larger areas. I sometimes use a black chalk. Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed this demo.

Dan, this is awesome! I love watching your videos and how to create your paintings and prints, I have seen a few of your clips where you use charcoal in drawings and paintings. How do you "fix" or "stablise" it so it remains without smugging...? Thanks!
Thanks for your feedback and positive comments, pleased that you enjoy the demos. I always use a fixative before painting over the charcoal (hairspray is a good substitute) I don't usually film this as I do the spraying outdoors. Thanks for watching.

I was going to ask the same question. I always thought you just used charcoal under the painting as a sketch for placement. This is so awesome to know and it's changed the way I paint.
Hi Dan! Thanks so much for sharing your work, techniques, and ideas with us. Would you mind let me know what fixative you are using over the charcoal before you paint over? I have tried Winsor & Newtown workable fixative...i had awful results! I appreciate it. Please keep posting.
I have used Winsor & Newton without any problems although I find it a little expensive, in the early stages I sometimes use a cheap hairspray (sounds ridiculous but it does work) I always finish with a couple of coats of a matt acrylic varnish spray. (Kobra brand or Montana Gold)

There is a little bit of planning and the videos do need to be edited and filmed to show as much of the creative process as I can. I begin with choice of colours and materials and sometimes I make a very quick sketch, but I mainly enjoy a more improvised approach.
Did you use gesso before painting ?
Do you use fixative to protect the last application of charcoal?
Yes always apply when finished, or spray with an acrylic varnish
Dan, would you mind telling what your color palette was for this piece, please? I am trying to build a minimalist palette of high end acrylics and I dig these colors. I saw cadmium red hue, cadmium yellow deep, then I suspect yellow ochre and not sure about the blue. What would you recommend?

I do tend to use a lot of yellow ochre combined with cad yellow. Hope this helps

Spray with a suitable fixative or a good alternative is a cheap hairspray. When fixed I always spray with a matt acrylic varnish.

Yes, but sometimes you can achieve great marks by painting over unfixed charcoal with a brush dipped in water.
Just started watching. What is the purpose of all the little lines you draw in the beginning? Then you paint over them.
They just lie down the structure to allow the work to develop, it helps to block things out and will often spark a few ideas and move the composition forward.
....and then you decide what is the TOP.

I always spray with a fixative once finished or if I want to add more paint layers. Hairspray is a cheaper option.
BOSS MAN if you have access to the clear fixative that is meant for it I would go with that. When I used aerosol hair spray I didn’t have much in supplies and was winging it. I used it on pastel portraits and never had a problem with it.
What fixative is used and at which phase should we do that?
I use an acrylic matt varnish spray but sometimes I paint over unfixed charcoal to achieve different effects. Always finish with a varnish to fix and protect the work.

Do u know which way is up or down or is it just subjective?
With these it is often just instinctive, it doesn't always work but I do like to think that is you get the balance right the work could be viewed in any direction especially in the square format.
Do you think about colour wheel ??
Yes I think it is something that you always need to be aware of, it does become instinctive the more you work with colour. I think this would make a good topic to address in a future demo. Thanks for watching.

I am IN LOVE with your work!! You are amazing and so generous to share all your techniques. I especially love this charcoal over paint....what fixative do you use in between the layers? I have a "workable" matt fixative, but it still allows the charcoal to rub off. Do you use a sealer type fixative in between as well as the final coat? Thanks so much!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoy the videos. This is a great technique to try and it is a good way to generate ideas. I spray with a fixative before painting over or sometimes paint directly over unfixed charcoal for various texture effects. Use a cheap hairspray as an alternative to a fixative and when the work is finished I always spray with a couple of coats of an acrylic matt varnish.
What fixative spray do you prefer? 😊
I always use Winsor & Newton, spray with a couple of coats. Most well known brands are OK although these can be a little expensive. I often spray sketches with cheap hairspray which is a good replacement.
Oh...and how do you know when you are done?
I sometime continue to work on these even after I have finished the demo, so what you see at the end is often painted over. I stop when I feel it can't be improved or just when I like the colour combination.
