My god, this is a masterpiece -- it is utterly stunning.....and what is even more amazing is that it was pulled from process!!! Genius! This is the best work I have seen of yours overall and I've thought other pieces of your work were outstanding. You are most definitely an artist with a unique voice and deserve more recognition. Thank you so much for sharing this --- it is an honor to see a master in action.
Hi Dan. This, your latest painting, is exhibition stuff. It's a forceful piece, dramatic, yet easy on the eye. It’s wonderful. Don't be put off by negative comments. Once you set yourself up on stage, or in front of the public at all, you have to expect some unfavourable responses. It can be hard not to take them personally, I know to my cost. Still, a wise man once said, “Some people are creative, the one’s who can’t create, become critics.” A clumsy paraphrase, but does the job.
Thanks Gordon, I always expected to get a few negative comments but it's something that really doesn't have an effect on my output. I always post videos that I'm confident with and hope that they pass on a few creative tips. Thanks for your positive feedback and response to this work, I always like to think if the work was in a gallery it would create some sort of response either good/bad its better than being ignored.
Thanks again for all your positive comments and feedback for this latest video, I will respond to all over the weekend. I just wanted to say that this video in particular was trying to show the whole creative process, it shows the determination to push the work to its final conclusion, never give up. I intend to make more of these larger scale projects this year. The Union Jack flag will not make a reappearance.
wonderful to watch this take shape.... so inspiring!! good to hear someone of your level say you almost abandoned it in the process. thankfully you didnt, the result is beautiful. its good to see what can happen if you dont give up on a work. many thanks for allowing us to watch you in the act of creating.🙏
I think you learn a lot from this process, it does happen to most artists who are usually very critical of their own work. What I can't show in the videos is the amount of time I spend just looking at the composition. (that would be a very long and dull video) Thanks for the feedback.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, DAN. TNX FOR THE PRINT. I LOVE IT. YOU INSPIRED ALL OF US WITH YOUR BEAUTIFUL ART WORKS. I SEE THAT YOU HAVE SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING -T-SHIRTS.
Glad you liked the print and pleased that it arrived safely, I will have more of these art giveaways in the future. The merchandise shop below each video is something I want to develop, and is only possible after achieving the 10,000 subscribers. I hope to design exclusive content in the future, such as posters, phone cases, mugs etc. Thank you for your comments and feedback.
This immediately put me in mind of an Australian family seeking safety on the water from their fire-stricken community. It’s excellent and very poignant. Happy new year, Dan. 🥂
That is a sad image to think about and it is heartbreaking to witness the events now taking place in Australia, that thought did cross my mind once I had completed the work.
WOWSER Dan. Improvised Composition - what a great work you’ve made here. I missed this video, as I try to watch all that you make. Thanks for sharing - you make such a difference !
Interesting to watch your approach and technique. I was thinking of Kandinsky when you were creating this. I'll have to try something like this approach. Thanks. subbed.
Thanks, I find charcoal one of the most satisfying mediums to work with. Don't forget you can use a cheap hairspray as an alternative to the expense of fixative spray.
I watched with interest and then fascination, wondering where you were going, what brushes you were using, what spurred the changes you made. I was completely, breathlessly absorbed in the process and now I am feeling moved and full of admiration. Thank you for the experience. 😊
Thanks very much for your positive response to this demo, I tried with this one to capture the whole creative process, sometimes it works but it can also fail. As long as you continue the process it is surprising what you can achieve.
That was very impressive! For a long time I kept cringing and wondering if you saw the evil clown portrait you were making. You some how turned it into a picture of the Holy Family on a boat as refugees! At one point, a Canadian Mountie appeared off their left shoulder, but that too evolved into something more complicated. Way to go, sticking with it until it became something amazing.
Glad you enjoyed the demo. I often have to resist working on images as the artwork develops, I had no idea how this one would evolve but once I saw this final image it was hard to resist and I was very pleased with the final composition.
Stunning piece of work Dan and a joy to watch it being created. A view of the times with refugees trying to make it across the channel before the deadline 💚
Your painting brings to mind the plight of refugees. The line work against transparent color makes me think of stained glass/ church windows. Your process was fascinating to watch. Thanks for sharing this. Happy New Year!
Hello Dan, I've just subscribed to your channel. What a great skill you have! I love your art! Can't wait to see more of your creations! Happy New Year!
Thanks very much for your positive comments about the videos and thanks for subscribing. I have lots of new demos planned for this year so hope you find them useful.
Thanks very much, I must admit the final image did take me by surprise as it gradually began to form, I always enjoy this way of working it can have very unexpected results.
Wooah. Stunning is all I can say. Did you have the idea of what it was going to be right from the start.? If I had to hazard a guess I'd say no. I knew what it was at about 16.10 in the video.
I enjoy working on these improvised works. This one sort of appeared after a few days, I was about to give up and then I began to see this composition. The result was unexpected but I was very pleased with the outcome. Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback.
I am happy, you worked on and over your frustration to get this beautiful result. The only thing I could not catch, is the preparatory drawing, which is a pity. Thank you so much for sharing!
Yes I did notice the lack of marks in this first stage, I need to remember that on the next demo, i should use a darker pencil and just film in close up, the filming lights are so bright that details can be lost. Thanks for the feedback, always appreciated.
I had no idea how this one would turn out, I enjoy the process and try to work on something until it seems to arrive at an end result, I liked this when I had finally completed the composition. I had recently read about a tragic case of refugees and I think that had an influence somehow.
Thanks very much. I have no original artwork for sale in my online shop. I am hoping to start an online gallery of new original work in the next few months and will keep updating the website. I only have Limited edition signed prints at the moment.
Hi Dan, I'm just starting out learning about abstract and different mediums to use. Love your work! Very inspiring. What kind of charcoal do you use when working on canvas w acrylics? Also, the fixative that I'm using makes it difficult to paint on after I've sprayed the canvas to prevent smudges. What is the best fixative to buy? Thanks and happy new year!
Thanks very much, glad you are enjoying the videos. I use vine or willow charcoal sticks and sometimes black chalk. I recommend using an acrylic varnish spray to seal the charcoal, and I sometimes use a cheap hairspray as I work as this can also help. A good fixative spray and one I use is Winsor & Newton. Happy new year, hope it's a creative one.
I think you just leveled up. A great start to the new year. (Aside: the flag is not a great backdrop for your vids. Something more neutral will allow the art to speak freely without competition from clashing color and harsh linearity.)
Thanks for the feedback, the flag was a temporary solution to the problem of reflection from the bright filming lights, a new backdrop will be in place next time.
I always spray with a few coats of acrylic matt varnish when the work is finished. Charcoal can be fixed as you work using a fixative spray (or hairspray can be used as a cheaper substitute.
I needed a backdrop to reduce the glare from the lights I use for filming, the flag does seem relevant to the final image but it was accidental, I will have a new backdrop for the next demo.
The center part facing forward looks like an abstract Gas Mask, so the name I would give it is Toxic! This turned out really amazing, interesting and inspiring! What brand of charcoal are you using?
Thanks for your feedback, I'm using a combination of willow charcoal and vine charcoal, the vine is much softer so works for this. Not sure of the brand but Winsor and Newton have a good selection.
It can be many things, a small boat with too many people crowded on board, under a dark sky. It's a provocative subject. Thanks for your positive comments.

Just a stunning piece! Evokes the emotions of those fleeing their homeland and hopefully finding refuge in another place.
Absolutely mesmerizing!!!! Thank you for sharing your process!!

Dan Tirels. Maybe just a photo of the preparatory drawing, when you completed it.
Thanks for helping have you ever used chalk paint in your paintings,or to cover a canvas?Have a blessed year.
I haven't tried that, I normally apply a few coats of acrylic gesso which provides a smoother surface to work on.
👍🏼🤯 thank you for sharing!
SUPER
Love it! I just wish it would have retained more of its organic look and featured the charcoal even more. However, it is a stunning piece.
I know what you mean, I've made notes with this one, and the filmed reference really helps. The next one will be better and more pre planned.
That's cool
Thanks again
😮😍You are a great artist
Beautiful work. Do you seal your work to avoid smudge? What is a good way to avoid gloss over it, you would get from a varnish seal?
Yes, I recommend using an acrylic matte varnish spray, just a couple of coats.
Fantastic!!
Dan, did you have this planned out, or it evolved to the amazing piece it is? Love your work you have been a great inspiration!
I had no idea how this one would turn out, I enjoy the process and try to work on something until it seems to arrive at an end result, I liked this when I had finally completed the composition. I had recently read about a tragic case of refugees and I think that had an influence somehow.

I’d love to know the title of this piece it’s gorgeous
Titles are difficult and this one is open to interpretation, Journey, Hope, Fears, Arrival, Escape, Destiny are all words that come to mind.
Did you put a varnish on the painting? What is the method because the charcoal must be installed? THANKS.
I sprayed with acrylic varnish but sprayed with a charcoal fixative first.
Buena tecnica
I think you just leveled up. A great start to the new year.

Thanks for the feedback, the flag was a temporary solution to the problem of reflection from the bright filming lights, a new backdrop will be in place next time.
Curious, what materials do you use to seal acrylic and charcoal? If you do, by what method do you apply the sealant?
I always spray with a few coats of acrylic matt varnish when the work is finished. Charcoal can be fixed as you work using a fixative spray (or hairspray can be used as a cheaper substitute.
A lot of depth and feeling..
Was the flag deliberate for the mood of the image..?
I needed a backdrop to reduce the glare from the lights I use for filming, the flag does seem relevant to the final image but it was accidental, I will have a new backdrop for the next demo.
Love your work Dan! So méditative and free.. question: what protective/sealant spray do you use?
I would always spray with an acrylic varnish when finished. Spray with a fixative as you work on each layer.
I actually prefer the earlier, more abstract stages.
That does happen, although I liked the unexpected outcome with this one.
Did you draw a black pastel? A regular pastel oil pastel?
Just charcoal or black chalk.
@@DanTirels Thank you. Art is diverse and has a lot of techniques, but I'm interested in your paintings. I'm going to watch videos and learn a lot. ^^

👍👍👍
Can you paint a portrait this way
I plan to film this for a future video, may even work on a self portrait.
May I ask what charcoal you are using? It seems to lay on very dark and easy.
For this work I used a combination of willow charcoal and vine charcoal. I recommend the vine because it's softer and works well on the canvas.
Dan Tirels thank you, but I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer about my question. What BRAND of charcoal? It seems darker than the vine charcoal I use.
Hello, Dan

Is it about immigrants using the sea?
