    Linocut example using the reduction method - 3 colours
    Picasso still life with a lamp.
    I've always really like the Picasso linocut series and have wanted to film this process for a while.
    Unlike some of my previous demos, for this, you will need to invest in some materials which will enable you to progress. All the products used are available online or from any good art supplier, you will also find many linoprinting kits available that will provide you with all the materials you need.
    Important : ONLY USE BLOCK PRINTING INK (paint will NOT work)
    Materials ;
    Lino sheet, Lino cutting tool with various blades, Scola water-based block printing ink (black, white, raw sienna) pallet knife, roller, glass or perspex sheet, 220gsm card.
    I haven't done any lino printing for a while so this is all new to me. Mistakes have been made along the way and the end result is not perfect, but this is such an enjoyable process and I recommend having a try for yourself.
    I will update this with a list of materials and a description of the process.
    Monoprinting booklet is now back in print and available from the website.

    Great video. Love the energy in the final artwork! (I just started watching linocut videos in the last few days and I gotta say thank you for not filling the quiet with obnoxious music.)

      I try not to use music and find the noises of the process much more satisfying. Thanks for watching and it's good to know you enjoyed this demo.

    Hi Dan. I was very surprised and delighted by this lino cut demo. It's a big step away from your other demos. I did my last lino cut in mid January, 2005. Perhaps it's time I seriously considered starting again. (Along with the myriad list of other techniques that I'm trying out). You are a wonderful inspiration and costing me a small fortune). Smile.

      I really enjoyed working on this, I've wanted to film this for a while but I have not done a lino print for such a long time and I always used to end up with bleeding fingers. Halfway through filming, I realised that they are quite tricky. I will make more from my own designs. Glad you enjoyed watching this.

    Really enjoyed watching your lino print take shape. I did a workshop years ago and found the cutting hurt my hands after a while (the joys of ageing) but I love the raw and natural look of this art form.

      Yes that can be a problem, it can cause blisters if working on a large scale piece. I think that you can now buy extra soft lino that is easier to cut, I might give that a try. I agree about the look of the prints, it has an appeal.

    Hi Dan, great to see you doing linocut, I struggled a lot at first but once I relaxed a bit so my hands and arms stopped aching lolol I started to do better, I love the results I've developed a real aversion to perfection in art I love the unexpected, not moved up to a three colour piece yet I love the process though

      Thanks, I have wanted to film this demo for a while and I think it is a great one to experiment with, the 3 colour print was tricky and not entirely successful but the finished print turned out much better than I thought it would. It is a very satisfying process and I plan to do more.

    Hi Dan,
    I do not know which kind of ink you use but I think it is not a good one. In plus you put to much of it on your glass inking. You should also think about an another or maybe two bigger gouges to take of the largest parts.
    But anyway the demo was interesting. Thanks.

    So in order to for subsequent colors to not go over the previous colors, you shaved the pervious colors down? Then you can only use that plate one time? Beautiful job! I love watching you work.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  3 роки тому +3

      Yes but you can also cut a lino block for each separate colour so you can print as many editions as you like. Glad you enjoyed this demo.

    Nice job Dan. I take it the original design you transferred to the lino was your composition inspired by Picasso? I have that book of his linocuts he did from 1958-1963. Some of his finest work in my opinion. I have seen a few of those originals in galleries. He draws you in like a magnet. Hard not to want to do stuff like him. I sometimes have to put all of his stuff away so I am doing things my way not his.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  3 роки тому +3

      No I can't claim that this is my own composition it is a copy of one of Picasso's own works. I am a huge admirer of his linocut series and this process is something that I have wanted to return to for a while, I am always keen to learn an develop and by copying this linocut and discovering how to apply the various layers I am sure that I will now be able to transfer this to my own original compositions. This is such an enjoyable process and I hope the video will encourage others to attempt it.

      has@@DanTirels I am a huge fan of them too. Some claim that Picasso developed the multi-color reduction lino cut, but that has been disputed. He sure mastered the approach and left us some gorgeous examples.

    From what I have seen on UA-cam there are two or three ways of doing this - one is to draw each stage on like here and carve them out while printing the colours separately or to trace them on separate tracing paper drawing them on as you go. Can you think of masking stencil to cover up the parts you don’t want to print and keep the parts you do step-by-step. I’m going to try with the masking method so that I have a way of blocking out colours as I don’t want them to show through. I was trying to ask a ‘masters level teacher’ how to do this but they didn’t seem to know because they only printed one colour and carved out chunks of negative space ? I did a line drawing. The teacher said that mine was good and it was absolutely terrible because I made a mess of the nose and it looks like a deformed witch. It’s really annoying when somebody pretends they know more than you do when actually they don’t know at all and charge tuition fees for the pleasure of confusing you. Trying to make out that I’m an idiot and they know everything - it is very annoying time wise. I’m glad I saw this. Really useful Thankyou so much.

      I enjoy working on lino cuts and will try to film more demos. One idea is to just have a lino sheet for each colour then print as many copies as you want. The method I show in this video was a particular technique perfected by Picasso, it takes practice so never be put off by early mistakes. Good luck.
