Hi! I'm 17 and I'm from Brazil, I was thinking about to learn to draw, now I'm here. I'll try to spend 30 minutes drawing and learning everyday, and I'll watch your videos, thanks. I'm gonna come back here after 6 months and say my experience.
I really love the old youtube. When people put out tutorials such as this and they all expect nothing in return but the satisfaction of having to share their knowledge with us.
“It doesn’t HAVE to be PERFECT” “Get rid of the perfectionist mentality, get into training mode.” “Play around, have fun. Don’t stress, do your best.”(Schaefer, How to Draw, video #1) THE best advice. I appreciate you, brother.
Yes, THE best advice. Brandon Schaefer is THE teacher I’ve been looking for since I finally decided to try and learn to do something I never thought I could do. This IS going to be fun & I AM going to learn to draw! Yay!!
Shawn Daniels ~ to me, not amazing advice. for some people, like me, we can’t get rid or our perfectionist mentality. we can’t just not get mad and stressed.
I agree. I’ve been learning how to sketch in China by a Chinese woman who is an absolute perfectionist. It’s making me crazy! I don’t think I’m gonna waste anymore money with her.
Ye as a kid when i used to draw I would always sketch like this and then i'd get upset with myself because it looked messy. Then i gave up. So hear I am again realizing this is how you're supposed to be doing it xd

Gabriele Genota I hope you're ok now. Don't mind these idiots that try to discourage you, they clearly don't realize people have feelings. Best thing to do is to avoid them.
Agreed. Most underrated comment here. I am going to make that quote the next thing I draw. With some funky background. Been wanting to draw an enchanted forest for a while now...
A 20 year old trying to learn art skills as I've always been interested in it, let's hope i don't give up. EDIT: thank u to everyone cheering me on! my progress was slow due to college and i had to stop for a while but here i am again! 2021 let's all not give up and learn together :D
The whole perfectionist mentality is what was holding me back for sure. Once I got it into my head that nothing is perfect, and that my sketches and drawings evolve over the course of creating them, I found I became a lot more able to create things from my mind onto the paper. Thanks for the guide, I owe you a beer!
Much appreciated! Glad to hear that :) I've realized over the years that one of the biggest problems for learning to draw isn't technical ability, it's mindset haha. Have fun with it my friend. I don't drink but I'll drink something different :)
Him: talks about the materials reccommended for sketching Me with a mechanical pencil, number 2 pencil, graphite refills, an eraser and a school notebook: im ready
YES! Finally a channel that 1) Does things I can co-create next to the video, 2) I can imagine listening to (&learning from) a long period of time because the voice is comforting and 3) actually tells me that drawing is supposed to be fun
I love how this doesnt already assume I know everything about drawing and that I know how to draw. Its taking it step by step and explaining what kind of pencils or materials you need what different things mean and that its taking it slow. This is a really good tutorial and im using this for summer as I learn to draw :D
Absolutely brilliant. That one piece of advice ‘don’t commit’ has transformed my thinking. I’m 55 and have always thought I couldn’t draw because my art teacher at school said so. I just drew a circle with shading and shadow and it’s made me so happy! Will definitely be drawing everything in my house and looking forward to the next in the series.
It’s crazy that you’re actually still looking at comments years after this video was made. I’m not sure if you’ll see this but I want you to know that I watched this entire series and I’m very grateful. You gave me the inspiration and the structure to learn how to draw. Thank you.
Really glad to hear that :) I know the series isn't perfect or exactly complete but just as you said, it's just a starting point to get you go where you want from here. Have fun!
90sProject's channelV2 When you get good enough to draw like that, you can be a perfectionist. A beginner will never be anywhere near perfect. You can't think like that when you're still learning.
@@byunniq9060 well it is very important as a beginner to know what pencils to use which are more darker which are used for shadows i use different pencils for shadows because i feel like it looks better
I never even thought about not committing to the basic outline at the beginning. Just this one little thing has given me a lot more confidence in being able to improve my drawing ability. Thank you!
It literally CHANGED my entire understanding of drawing. I always committed to my lines and it always came out looking cartoonish. This tutorial is a god sent
I'm 28 years old and inflicted with memories from teachers telling me I am rubbish at art. With your video, I just drew an egg! I sent it to my partner and he is delighted haha Thank you!
I seriously doubt that any teacher ever said "You are rubbish at art". YOU told yourself that. They were telling you how to improve. Every single human in history started out as "Rubbish at art". Some wanted to learn. Others didn't.
After several years of leaving my passion for drawing, here I am, an 18-year-old who's trying to restore his passion. It's so hard for me to go back to drawing after I have been rejected when I was in 6th grade. I was so easily discouraged. Yes, I still know how to draw but there's a feeling inside me that I was left behind. I want to start over again and learn the basics, yet it really is hard to start something. Planning to finish this whole series, watching your other vids about color and stuffs and hoping I could bring back my passion for drawing :) Btw, this tutorial vids are cool. Very beginner friendly
Did you draw everyday? And did you only learned from youtube? I kinda have a little talent in drawing but no one encourage me, but I keep saying to myself that I will improve.
I’m getting back into drawing after YEARS and I just needed a fundamental restart. This course is still as useful as ever. Thank you for keeping this up

Whenever I asked other artists how do I get better at drawing, one of the worst pieces of advice I've been given was "Just draw/just practice" Well, I've been "just drawing" for about ten years and I'm still at an amateur level. What I meant was HOW do you practice? What techniques do you incorporate? What are the steps? To me, it's just a condescending way of saying "Figure it out on your own."
Read drawing books, go to the library if possible. No need to even buy books. Read them, draw everything in them. Draw your surroundings. Learn to render form and light through shading - put the techniques in said books to use. Start from simple objects and build to complex. If you did anything else for 10 years, do you think you'd improve? It seems you should start evaluating what you're doing and try different things to solve the problem. Find ways to solve the problem. The internet is an amazing resource for books, videos, articles and all kinds of things on drawing. I'm sure you can use this to your advantage. I hope it goes well and you find what you're looking for. To be honest, this is my method, I did all of these things I mentioned above including drawing from life and my surroundings.
There is not a clear way at all. That's why they say "just practice". You need to find what you suck at first. It may be perspective, values or rendering. Read about the topic that's the most hard for you and just practice that, NOTHING ELSE. Then when you're decent at that fundamental, switch it up for another. The fundamentals of drawing are like a wheel, you keep rotating them and going back to them.
SchaeferArt what is the best approach to help a 6 year old who loves to draw?! The school has an after school art program but it’s really pricey so I’m looking into other ways I can nurture this ability!
@@MercyAlwyz23 The local library is amazing for that. Some libraries even let you sign up for free. And maybe draw along with your child too, they will love that.
as a person who is still a teen and is not financially independent and wants to learn the art to be financially independent... I really needed this. Thank you :)
I just wanna tell you how happy I am I found your videos. I used to draw portraits of people in my late teens and I was really talented but then life happened and I stopped. I’m now 33 and have been wishing I still could do what I used to. I was looking for videos exactly like this that would break it down for me and make me not obsess over everything all at once and give up. I am so excited to start sketching everything again. Been working on breaks at work. Thank you!!!
I'm in my fifties and this is the first time I've ever heard anyone explain how to sketch. Thanks to that explanation, for the first time since I was a small child, I'm enjoying the process of drawing.
I've always used different forms of art as an expression of myself my whole life. A couple years ago, after several medical problems, I had a stroke. I was only 48. I've been terrified to begin again for fear of what I might not remember. This online tutorial was amazingly effective at getting me back to holding my tools. Also, assuming I know nothing, I don't have to feel stupid if I can't remember something I learned in freshman art. Thank you for a place to begin again.
My teachers never told me how to draw, specially the arts teacher, she always assumed that I know how to draw. Here I am struggling to make a fucking comic from 0 in 48 hours. I learn everything from myself using the internet. The school didn't teach me anything. Thank you very much for this video, for people like you, education is increasing day by day, you encourage self-learning, and that's great🧡🧡
I’m 24 years old and this is the first time to me start to learn sketching and drawing ✍️ I appreciate you efforts to help us to learn 😍❤️ Thanks a lot ❤️

Thank you for bringing this lesson down to the utmost beginner level. I am 64 years old and am starting to learn to draw. Most videos I have watched regarding "beginners" is so far past my knowledge and confidence level that I almost stopped before I even began because it was far too intimidating for novice me. Today, I will begin with my new found confidence to draw a circle with shading. Fantastic!
I never understood what the point of sketching was, I thought It just looked messy so I always fully committed. I really wanted to draw but because of my hard commits it always looked trashy so I never could make an habit. Now at 21 years old you just explained _why_ people sketch. Not to make random lines but *'to find the right line within the lines'* and the with vs without sketch, for the first time I tried the damn thing and I've just drawn a perfect circle for the first time in my life and it feels amazing.. I feel so ashamed. You have my thanks dude!
Thank you Brandon! I've thought about learning to sketch for about 50 years (yes, really) and always thought it's too hard, can't be bothered, can't even draw a stick figure etc. But yesterday I decided (out of the blue) that I'd actually try. I want to be able to sketch concepts to illustrate ideas and metaphors. I watched your first video and was amazed that I could sketch a pretty nice sphere! I just wanted to let you know that you have a wonderful style. Inspirational. Thank you for doing what you do.
My notes: 1. Don't be committed... draw multiple lines and darken the most appropriate shape. 2. Its not gonna be perfect when you draw it the first time... so do not commit. 3.Find the light source and how many light sources , where is light coming from... that will help you make the sketch 3D.... making shadows. 4.make the arrow from light source. 5.Get rid of the perfectionist mentality and get into training mode.
This is the only quality channel that I found about drawing that 1) actually teaches you how to draw, 2) goes step by step instead of rushing and 3) is a good drawer. And I thank you for that. This is an outstanding video about learning to draw and I can't wait to start :)
THIS is exactly what I’ve been looking for. No other videos EVER really take you through the basics and I have been trying so hard to find someone who can teach me in person, but have had no luck whatsoever finding anyone. I’m trying to get into animation school, but they require a portfolio for the admission process 🥺. Thank you so much 💕💕 this will help me more than you can imagine.
Well get used to seeing me around your comment sections. I got a long road ahead and lots of questions when I get the materials ready. Thank you for actually explain this. Seems like one of the hardest parts of starting is even knowing where to start or what to even learn.
ItachiShakur_ Made some progress here and there. I've been working on the basics for the longest time, mostly drawing from the shoulder, and getting down basic shapes. Not gonna lie, I've been hoping off and on over the 11 months since I posted this. If I'd done to working every day I'd be MUCH farther along.
I suggest learning to draw lines and curves and at lest one or two sketches daily. When I practice, I try to do at least 2 hours of practice and I'm proud to say that I've been able to do that pretty well. And if there's anything I can say that I've been able to actually pick up, its having fun drawing for the first time with what I try to sketch. Before I'd just get upset but now I can smile and laugh as I learn. So yeah. Sketches, line practice and maybe pick up some pins as well, And I recommend going to drawabox.com. That's where I've been going for a while now.
I'm already so excited to learn sketching! And I'm from India being a 21 years old girl who has had tympanoplasty just 7 days ago and Today it's 28 july 2024...as I have to give my ear some rest so I had to give up the idea of watching movies and so I thought to start learning sketching as I'm a reader and I've always assumed how an artist would feel by sketching... I'm doing this for myself so that if in future when I'm 30 and any age and I get to see the beautiful person or moment or scenario then how would it feel to draw...wow! God bless me and those who have the urge to learn sketching ❤
I put this video in a private playlist years ago when I had plenty of time but never learned and took the time to learn. Now I really want to learn and I've got no time (but I'll find it). Be this a tip for everyone, if you wanna do something do it don't waste time.
28 Y.O here. And I am here because I told my friend "I really wish I knew art a bit. I feel like expressing myself in the moment when I am down" and in return I got "You can always start. We have UA-cam." Me: "I know that, I just can't get started." Me to Me: "Why did we not do this already ?" Thank you so much Brandon. I feel so liberated and emotional for drawing a circle without commitment. Love you man. Stay blessed
After 31 years, I finally decided to really get into drawing. This is the best advice I ever heard: don't commit to the lines, sketch it out first. Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to not give up!!
Hey man. Just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I just completed this lesson and drew some spheres like you did. I have always been bad at art but this video gave me some confidence to start. Took me 30 minutes to even get the courage to start drawing but I did it! Massive respect for you 💟

Thank you for this! My daughter has been sketching for quite some time using computer paper and school pencils. Now that I'm able to spend the money on better materials, I now know what I need to build a decent starter kit.
Love that you're SLOWLY going through the basic supplies. Love that you're ENUNCIATING words. Love that you're explaining and showing what SKETCHING means and what it doesn't mean. Love how you're giving suggestions i.e. DRAW EVERYTHING. Love that you're EXPLAINING and SHOWING light and shadow. Love how calm and encouraging you are.

Used to draw alot when I was younger. I was really great at it, but then I stopped as I got older. Started focusing on a career, starting a family ect. Lately though, my creativity been coming back and I've been doodling more, especially since my daughter has stumbled upon my old sketch pad. She's been drawing more too. So going back to the basics.
Me because my spark of creativity just came to me i still improved but i felt like i never went over the basics it just got to me and i realized that weakness (realized i suck) so i want to start over
10 years later, and the "sketch it out first" tip literally saved me. I want to get into drawing, but i couldn't draw a circle to save a life. This tip literally saved me.. thank you so much man, you're a great teacher
I have watched several step-by-step drawing videos, signed up for a couple Udemy courses; but your video is the first one that is truly providing step-by-step instructions and setting expectation. Thank you!

I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I want to thank you... Literally you saying to draw small lines and not commit is the reason I haven't given up... I didn't know to draw small lines, I would always commit and it would turn out super bad and get frustrated... It's my 3rd day drawing and in my opinion it looks incredible... I look at what I made and I'm in disbelief. I appreciate your videos 🖤💙🖤💙🖤💙🖤

Wow!!! Thats it?!!! My homework this week is to draw circles and squares! I can do that! Lol Thank you for being so calm and breaking these concepts down. Like how not to "commit" to any shape. As a person who can't draw, we think that you guys just get it right the first time. Thank you for this video. ❤
Namste, I'm your new student from India. I can't believe this video was made 10 years ago but I find this channel really very helpful to start my sketch journey again.
Man, I though i could never learn to draw, i though it was like a talent that you are born with it or not, but of course anyone can learn. Thanks for the series Schaefer Art
BENACHOUR Abdou remember, every single thing in the world, anyone can do at amazing skill levels, anyone can, every single thing is just about learning and just constant training, from drawing, to video game pro, from martial artist, hard training > talent, every thing is just like learning to ride a bike, did you thought you needed talent to ride a bike? At first you'll suck and probably fall, maybe only last 10 seconds before losing balance, but with just same constant practice, you will just improve and improve, same thing goes for everything in the world, even drawing, its only amount of constant training, dont try being perfectionist either, remember ad you learn to ride a bike, at the start you suck and dont do that great, same for art, dont take so long trying to make it really good, let your skills naturally become better with just constant training, and be satisfied with your drawings, just like a muscle, you work it out and then you get tired, but then through time it becomes stronger and you can do more
I gave up on sketching long ago because I at one point I was unable to draw what I intended to and how I wanted it to come out. I was frustrated and just closed my sketch book. Now, recently, after 3 years or so, I had this itchy feeling to just grab a pencil and draw something which I did and it was just me and my sketch book, no stress, no tension, no nothing. Just me, and my world. It came out pretty well though there were some things lacking, so I just searched up to start with basics and loved how you described the materials and gave advises. I think the most important thing is one should love their creativity and work no matter what. I just subscribed your channel because it was all I was looking for. Thank you for sharing these videos.
I have always been wanting to draw since I was a kid, I quit because my drawings were not even good, so I just told myself that I was a terrible artist for all this time. Until I met a friend who is an amazing artist and draws so well that I got inspired to grab the pencils once again, I was kind of progressing, but I wanted to draw as good as my friends, since whenever they showed me their drawings I just couldn't help it but think " why can't I do it and they draw so good like its nothing?". I wanted to draw like them, yet I couldn't for the life of me find the motivation to do it. Until I met that friend who kickstarted my spirit to draw. I am not necessarily a quick learner, yet my friend took the time to patiently explain things to me... I was progressing and today I found this tutorial, or should I say a kind- hearted gem. I cannot be more thankful to you. Your explaining is perfect, reminding me of that chill teacher we all love, who takes their time and love into teaching things to others. In the span of 6 months I've gained an ability and motivation I didn't have. Thank you so much, this is a beggining of a journey.
I've been drawing without any lessons for years and I'm finally going back to the basics to clean up my drawings and get them where I want. I kind of hit a point where I just stopped wanting to draw because I can't stand how my work is turning out and having permisson to not commit and let it be messy is nice lol I need to get used to making a lot of messy drawings and mistakes to get the clean finished drawings I want. I wish I had classes years ago.

Exactly. My art teacher didn't even go over the types of pencils :(
Absolutely brilliant.
Awesome :) Glad to hear it! Have fun with it.
I just commented about this. I just sketched something with that thought in mind, and I was blown away at how good it looks.
It’s crazy that you’re actually still looking at comments years after this video was made. I’m not sure if you’ll see this but I want you to know that I watched this entire series and I’m very grateful. You gave me the inspiration and the structure to learn how to draw. Thank you.

I want to start over again and learn the basics, yet it really is hard to start something. u know what, it just becomes more and more complex and overreached LOL
@@SchaeferArt I appreciate your advice. And I'll do my best

Glad to hear!

If your drawing doesnt looks good, remember that. "Every line you draw, wasnt a waste. It only makes you better and lets you improve."
My notes:
Thanks for sharing these, probably helpful for a lot of people :)

“Finding the line within those lines.” I will always remember these words 😌
Namste, I'm your new student from India. I can't believe this video was made 10 years ago but I find this channel really very helpful to start my sketch journey again.
Man, I though i could never learn to draw, i though it was like a talent that you are born with it or not, but of course anyone can learn. Thanks for the series Schaefer Art
+Benny Ryan Thanks for the motivation talk man, I appreciate it. :)
BENACHOUR Abdou I can't see it ? :(
BENACHOUR Abdou remember, every single thing in the world, anyone can do at amazing skill levels, anyone can, every single thing is just about learning and just constant training, from drawing, to video game pro, from martial artist, hard training > talent, every thing is just like learning to ride a bike, did you thought you needed talent to ride a bike?
7:06 please don't ever do that "transition" ever again...
It sounds like when a character in a movie gets paranoid he hears voices in his head
I began to question myself

Hope it goes well! Just focus on enjoying the process. That will outlast everything else :)
Same!
"I suggest you that you start drawing everything in your house," my sister when she was in second grade. now she animates and do illustrations shit. I'm proud as hell but man I wanna learn how to draw too. that's why I'm here. this video is very informative, finally a video that assumes I don't know how to draw. thanks man!
him: *talking about what you need*
me: *here with my pencil and sketch book ready to draw knowing I’m going to mess up: 👁👄👁*
Wait you actually have a pencil? I draw with a pen
Messing up is part of the learning process. And it is often fun :D
The more you fail my friend the more you learn and the more you become successful
I draw with drawing tablet but I suck
