Thank you for posting this. My Macbook Pro recently had this happen and Simply Mac was going to take 7 days to diagnose and charge me a little over $200! $24 through Amazon and 45 minutes watching your video (stopping and watching again and again) my Macbook works again.

What can I say... Thank you, thank you! After my macbook failed I replaced the hard drive... no luck. I spoke to apple support. They told me my macbook pro 2011 was now "vintage" and unsupported. I was on my own... then I did a little research, found this video, bought a £10 cable and now I'm back up and running! You saved me £1200 for a new macbook!!! much appreciated

You are a lifesaver, my ribbon cable died on me in Cambodia and I couldn't find an apple repair shop in country to take it too. Thank you so much.

This is a life saver. My MacBook Pro crashed in the overhead bin during a hard landing. The HDD cable tore off. Followed this video and was able to get back into business.

This tutorial was precisely what I needed and worked like a charm. My local computer repair shop wanted to do the job for $150. I bought the needed parts on Amazon for $30 and was able to get it done myself with your help. Thank you!

When my relatively new, pricey SSD suddenly "failed" on my '11 macbook pro I had a hunch something different was going on. Obviously it was the crappy $8 piece of wire and not a $500 SSD; now it works like a charm! Thanks for walking me through the process with kindness and confidence!

Found this tutorial to be the most informative of all (out of so many). Just received my replacement cable from iFixit and followed through your instructions. I was sceptical that the replacement cable would be the answer to the issue, but was very pleased when my Macbook Pro booted up again as it should. Many thanks for a thorough walk-through on this. Totally recommend watching this!

Hey, I got to thank you for this video. I had to do this exact thing to mine. I got it accomplished seeing how you did it. When I booted it up, everything was still there and I didn't need to reinstall anything!.
Out of the many that are showing how to do this, yours is quick, simple and precise-works for me-I'm subscribed!
    Thank you, much! Good job
(Side-note: The idea of music playing in the background is good but it is so "active" it competes with your teaching. On smaller devices, i.e. phones, it is almost louder than your voice)

Yes! This worked for me. The only problem that wasn't clear to me is how to insert the yellow or gold cable in. But my son just sort of inserted in and everything went back together pretty easily. Thanks for the video. You did a great job explaining the step by step except for how to insert the cable, but that just could be me being a newbie. Thanks so much. You will be my first resource for future macbook issues if they arise!

First let me say thank you. I had earlier done some reading about the blinking question mark in a file and figured I would start with the cable. Your video helped me, a person who has never taken a computer apart in my life to include my time as an "IT" in the Navy, successfully fix my computer. However, I agree with a lower post about inserting that small ribbon. I eventually figured out what you meant about the small slot but I question whether or not it will stay in which case I may have to go back in and gerry rig something. Regardless, thank you for the video. It is obvious you posted this to help people and as a now college student with little money, the $40 this took (to include the tool set) has saved my semester financially and computer wise. Good luck going forward!

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions! I am now heading for the Genius Bar to have the new hard drive reformatted and will then reinstall from my external drive - Time Machine backup. Had a minor heart attack at one point when I thought the cable on the bottom bracket had broken away, but it was all good, once I rewatched that part of your video. Found the cable online and had it in a matter of days.

I love that you made this video..some tips: slow down your movements when doing the crucial steps and have camera some place so your hands don't obscure that you're doing. And MOST OF ALL: I was shocked at how roughly and casually handled the cables. I've read that this kind of handling can cause problems with the cable, that they are delicate. And, I also vote for no music. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! This worked for a Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2012 Non-Retina that first was suffering from the Folder question mark after a drop, then reinstalled on new SSD, then suffering from the Prohibitory sign at boot (and 20-30 sec later bootet normally) + error: "The partition map needs to be repaired because there’s a problem with the EFI system partition’s file system". Finally it is working. Used this replacement cable: "Racksoy - New HDD Hard Drvie Cable without Bracket 821-1480-A Fit For MacBook Pro 13" A1278 2012" on Amazon.co.uk due to shipment to Denmark was not available for most other HDD cables, but this cable is working fine as a replacement. Thank you again!

Appreciated your video Chris. Help me remember how to reinstall this hard drive cable. They tend to be very problematic on the mid 2009 and 2010 models from what I understand. It is detailed and tiny work but if you take your time and be gentle, especially when pulling things apart, it works great.

  • @WilliamOrgan

Thanks bud, worked a charm! One thing that could have been a little clearer is when connecting that tiny gold ribbon cable into the hard drive cable. I used a tweezers to get it in properly, but it could have been easy to not insert it far enough if doing it by hand. Thanks so much for doing the vid though, this is the clearest version on UA-cam :)

I used a tweezers to push it in. I pushed it until I met the first bit of resistance, and it sort of "fit" in that distance without it falling out like when I was trying to put it in my hand.

Great video! I'm glad that you have this up. I am also a computer tech, and I ordered the same replace cable for my client. I was getting the same error, & I thought the hard drive might have been bad, so I swapped out the drive with a different hard drive, but it wasn't reading that one either. So I'm assuming that it's the cable,. Thank you again for the repair guide.

Good video, bro. Only part "missing" is how you put the small yellow cable into the small holder - guess it's just aim and push (like ye ol' days). Had same issue with start-up, took me 5 days of assemble/disassemble to figure it out :/. Figured it out after installing os in external and hdd-adapter in optical drive. Maybe add troubleshooting tags to vid...?

You can have this cable issue without the flashing question mark folder too. For me I only occasionally got this question mark folder and it would not flash. What I seen logging in was a circle with a diagonal line that would show a flashing Apple logo every few seconds. Then it would lock on the Apple logo with a progress bar that took forever to get to the login screen. Sometimes the progress bar would reach 100% and nothing else would happen. I would boot in internet recovery mode and sometimes my hard drive did not appear, other times it showed it as full even though it had over 500GB of free space on it. I also had the issue whereby when I could login things would work good for a while but then the computer would act up. I was constantly getting a spinning beach ball whenever I clicked anything in Safari, tried to type, etc. I replaced this hard drive cable myself and my MacBook is running like a champ now, fast login, super fast when using it and no more spinning beach ball!

With regard to some of the comments below: Apple don't give a shit about older models, if it wasn't for people posting videos like this we would all be standing at the Genius bar like idiots paying out even more money to the Apple Mafia. Use your own common sense. Be gentle with the kit and be patient. Followed Chris's advice and replaced the part - my mac now works better than before. Thanks to everyone taking the time to share their experiences and to everyone else 'grow the f**k up'.

Great video, and I love your American drawl btw! ✔️I was chilling in bed with my girl watching Under The Dome, when my Mac fell off the bed and landed with a slap on the floor, from about 3 foot. Had connectivity issues and spinning beach ball, so did some diagnostic and then got the flashing folder icon, and time machine couldn't find my internal 750HDD. Fearing a dead hard drive, I bit the bullet, hit the Apple Store yesterday.
After they checked it out, my genius decided that the cable had gone bad, and wanted to replace at a cost of 53euros. I got an email last night saying 'my product is ready, I can come collect it' - so I guess when I dropped it I shorted the cable somehow, or a connector came loose. Either that, or when I get there today they'll say 'yeh, didn't work, you need a new HDD'. But then why would they say the product is 'ready to pick up' if there are problems? I'll report back in some hours when I know.
I watched the video to see what Apple would be doing to my baby... ✔️

there are actually 3 types of screws (the small ones look the same until you look close) the front 4 are shouldered, and the 3 others are not shouldered, the three long ones go at the back obviously... the 7 short ones appear interchangeable and however they will get loose and fall out if installed incorrectly, for example if someone has worked on the machine and didn't notice this.
