Oldest World of Warcraft trailer (2001)

- Опубліковано 12 сер 2007
- The first game play footage of World of Warcraft officially unveiled to the public in this short trailer. The World of Warcraft engine was actually just Warcraft III's engine on steroids.
In-game footage released two years before this sleeping giant hit the shelves. What your seeing is actually a pimped out Warcraft III engine. It looks like they had only finished some of the Eastern Kingdoms at this pint in development namely Elwynn Forest, Darkshire, and Westfall. - Ігри

Or ghoul and skeleton models. Haha

everything in the entire game looks the same except for the playable races.. and new zones that didnt exist back then :c
New Ghoul model incoming sometime this year.

Some of the players weren't even born :)))
Doesn't it just make you feel old?

VOLTRONUS I remember when WoW was released in Sweden, I didn't play it myself until TBC though, but man was that good times :)
I'm 24 now, I was 13 then.
I wasn't
+VOLTRONUS Well, i was 9 years old when this trailer comes out, and at 2005 first time i played, i got surprised by the potential of the game really, awesome!!
back when the Blizzard name meant something
I remember watching this 10 times over and screen shotting plus printing them out to gaze on them before going to school .... I had never seen anything like this. Kinda wierd to sit here so many years later and ... like its a wierd dream time... time is wierd...
How do you feel about the song?
Dude I thought I was crazy for printing WoW screenshots! I used to think Onyxia was the coolest dragon ever and printed a bunch of screenshots of her at school since I didn't have a printer at home. I was printing these along with Happy Tree Friends images and I'd stick the prints to my bedroom wall. The teachers were not amused. 😆
...I should get myself a Onyxia poster for nostagia's sake.
You were both crazy
I spent half of my life on that game

Duskwood forest used to be so dark, you could only go there with a torch...
lol, for real!

I mean it. They tried that in the Beta. Scrapped that though.
oh man i think i remember that, i was scared shitless when i accidentally wandered there as a kid with my new human character. If i remember correctly i actually got lost there at some point lol
uneliasmarsu
It was in the closed Beta.... I don't know if you had access. It was nevertheless still pretty dark... Until Cataclysm.

There was a whole system for carrying torches and stuff, and while they make the game easier to understand currently, I don't think there will be much of it in the game... But maybe in the future...
Im glad the average warrior experience at 1:20 didnt change between 2001 and 2004

Back when trailers actually showed gameplay, not a fancy and overtuned movie-trailer. Those were better times.
I love how you can clearly recognize each zone, simply by color and feel.
finally a real expansion.. just the upgrade we needed after shadowlands
2:10 that human hair floating and its 2001.
I remember this one kid in the high school computer lab saying "Yeah! Starcraft Ghost is going to be amazing! World of Warcraft looks like ass, its gonna suck!"

Alpha WoW was amazing, they totally ruinedit with vanilla... gg Bliz
***** Goldshire looked so much better @ 1:20 !
And so much bigger. The reason why they did such a massive crunch on the scale was for a good reason. I don't care how good it looks, if I'm going to run through that multiple times back and looking for my questgiver, that's going to get old real fast.
Alpha WoW was goofy as fuck.

Sad but true
I remember when I watched this back im the day. I was wondering if my PC could run that using my 56K modem
I think they reduced the quality between the pre alpha and the beta.
The thing about it that people seem to be missing is that the game has lost it's sense of what it was. Warcraft was an awesome universe, and yes I'd say that it even rivaled Tolkien in it's awesomeness. It lost it's DNA -- it's 'warcrafty-ness' which made the game so awesome. The game was very authentic back in the day and was what it was, it didn't cater to the masses!! Vanilla WoW did such a good job at immersing you in it's universe, and it was an awesome one!! I think one thing that really messed it up was flying mounts!!
+Rusticfucker it didn't lose anything, it's just your nostalgia blinding you. If Vanilla was released today it would fail. Hard.
+Solaxe S
It has lost it's sense of accomplishment. And the world does not seem to draw you in the same way as vanilla does. Getting epic mount was a big fucking deal you'd be happy about for days back then. Getting ANYTHING in wow now, hardly makes you smile. There's nothing special, cus it's too easy to get ( even rare mounts etc). Vanilla there was ALWAYS chatting in general/guild/random players u meet. You had to socialise to complete qs and you had to work TOGETHER. Vanilla private realm has opened this year, called Nostalrius - and i promise you i'm never going back to retail. the Community is awesome and i feel drawn to the world again.
+Solaxe S You're completely right. Mass releasing Vanilla WoW would flop as it wouldn't near even 1mil players. However, release a brand new game with better engine, combat, and the difficulty of vanilla, and it would be a massive success. While vanilla wasn't even that difficult, it was the sense of difficulty, the fact that a level 2 wolf could kick your ass was incentive to be careful. All vanilla players truly want is a sense of true danger again.
I am pretty sure that even Blizzard could not predicted that this game will become a massive success that have survived for almost 20 years (even if it is not as popular at it was during the last half of the first decade of the century)
Meh...
Solid 10 years.
What is absolutely crazy to me is that from the announcement in 2001 to the upload of this video, merely 6 years have passed.
But from the upload of this video TO NOW ALMOST 16 YEARS HAVE PASSED WTF

Fun Fact: The animation on the rigs that allows your character to turn around and look straight at whatever you have selected existed since 2001 as you can clearly see at the end with the guy looking up at the ent, but we did not get that till Legion in 2017 LOL

You can see how much WoW has grown by just watching this. The graphics, the gameplay, and the lore. The lore has a life of it's own. It's amazing to see how far it's all come. Sure there have been ups and downs but the game is still very much alive.
If you were to travel back in time and show Blizzard the trailer for Warlords of Draenor and all the things that are happening at this very moment, they'd all be awestruck knowing that they made all of it. And it truly is amazing compared to this.
Can't wait for release.

wow I remember watching this when I was a kid, this trailer was on the disc of diablo 2 or Warcraft 3, I dont remember which game, but I was very excited watching this
I still remember how hyped I was seeing this for the first time. The music is so good. The bird flying through the trees at 0:53. Those little touches that give a game life and create immersion are so important and lost on so many developers.
lol the warrior missed twice in a row then it cut off lmao

Seing this you can clearly see how much they were using from their old Wc3 engine
It's like Warcraft 3 and Everquest combined together haha

Wow, I never thought I'd see actual alpha stage gameplay, thanks!
It's cool how a lot has changed, but the ghouls and gnolls look exactly the same. After watching the Warlords of Draenor trailer, I kind of want to install Warcraft III.
I love how dark the night was 1:05
Loved your 16 second intro!
WoW will never feel new and exciting again. No other MMO will ever capture the same feeling of mystery and exploration that early WoW had despite being a terrible game from the gameplay perspective. Everything is datamined these days and public beta is a thing.
No one will ever risk pumping millions into an MMO that isn't overly streamlined. The average attention span of a modern player does not allow for that.
Think about it and when you are done, feel free to weep a little. It's ok. Twas the golden age of the MMO genre.
Very true. But there will always be something else for the next generation to look forward to. Or one can hope there will be. I haven't played the game for 3 years now and just watched this. Brings back so many lovely memories from my childhood. It was amazing to take part in the world of warcraft.
I started playing wow last year and it's still pretty exciting.
WoW mechanics were very similar to the game that was released before Wow called everquest.
Wow felt new to you because you were one of the casual waves who experienced their first MMO that was not Tibia or Runescape. But yeah, Wow had its own charm and it was awesome but the game mechanics itself were casual and not revolutionizing at all.

+gavin brown That's right!
+gavin brown Hardly, other games are getting past WoW soon, many leaving cuz Activison wants money and doesn't care about what gamers want. Wotlk was the last good expansion.
Roberts K True that Wrath = the best expansion, But what about legion coming out, it may destroy wrath?
+gavin brown nope, no way. Legion can be better than WoD but *NO HUMANLY POSSIBLE* way that it will be better than WotLK, I mean...it's Arthas that we're talking about and Northrend was the most beautiful thing Blizzard ever created....just remember those zones
Chris Toromanović Vanilla is by far the best time of WoW, but best expansion, it is WotLK for me, no other exp had me hooked like that, the music, the zones, the quests, dungeons, raids, everything was perfect for me in WotLK and the fact I love winter and icy zones :D
This hits me right in the feels.... im currently 17, and world of warcraft was my first gaming experience (except pokemon)... i grew up with this game :(
I can't believe your parents would let their 7 year old son play WoW
Rebecca Wolf because of... oh yeah, all the cartoon violence.... also, you must be a troll with that south park image.
***** and what exactly did that actually do to me? i might have been addictet do it for a set period of time, but i was under age, meaning i couldnt just play it all day because i had parretns you dimwit.
And when i got older (now) i got bored with the game. What you people fail to see, is that putting a bar for a small kid, makes the kid want to cross that bar... so stop putting ridicioules unnecessary bars.
***** And might i add.... that i could speak proper english at the age of 10 (im Danish) and i could write proper english when i was 8.
If you ask me, gaming has done a LOT more good then bad to me, and that is what stupid grown ups from previous generations don't get. They just put games as a "bad thing" for kids, even though it is exactly the same as playing with say, lego when said grown ups were kids.
***** trust me. If this message was actually important for me to look completely right, it would look right. I did get top grades in spelling (english).
meh i've been playing since vanilla days and tbh the thing i miss about vanilla isnt the gameplay but the actual community, because everything was so hard to get people had to work together to reach goals, i think retail wow would go back to that state if they removed the queue systems cross realm. why? because a realm should be a community, its what makes the game social, also remove LFR and LFG and flying mounts, people would bitch about it like crazy but in the end it will be for the better imo. i'm pretty sure people miss vanilla not because it was good/bad but more for the actual social aspect, dont get me wrong, wow is social right now but it is far from what it used to be
Listening to the music takes me back so much
I remember seeing this in the Frozen Throne line of cinematics and didn't think it would be for me. Whew boy.

Even Vanilla looks polished af compred to this
Amazing that so much of the shown trailer actually made it into the game. We see Westfall, Stranglethorn Vale, Elwynn Forest and Duskwood, which means that Blizzard was already well on their way making a large part of the Eastern Kingdoms continent. And the music (A Call to Arms by Jason Hayes) is almost exactly the one used in the final game.
The music is wonderful.
WOW this brings back feels.
Between this point and release, Tauren got Plainswalking and lost Plainswalking
And lostcit so late in development that it was in late beta builds. It also shows in how idiotic of a mount kodos are animation wise, having no business being event remotely as fast, and being spedup like 400% compared to their npc equivalents
And then Worgen got plainswalking.

I wish we could get a proper look at this build of the game. It would be interesting to see all of what differs from the 0.5.3 alpha
Someone a few years back posed a one hour video of them running around different zones in an early alpha build.
It is 2021 and I got this in my recommendations 13 years later
Love that the put a bit of this music in the BFA trailer :D
Something oddly nostalgic about seeing this.
Reminds me of when Blizzard weren't a mega-corporation, as in better.
you mean when they didnt make money? So i guess what ever you do, when you become successful at it, you want us to hate you to? Things change. The casual player owns the field now. People need to get over it, there is still hardcore content. Like hardcore SOO that most that yells no hardcore game play in wow cant do lol.
James E Hudson
No, I mean the inevitable complacency and exploitation of having monopoly. Just look at how long Blizzard go without adding new content - because they don't have to bother, there's no competition so they can get away with it.
William Fenton lol u r really funny
***** No he does not. They are making a Starcraft Expansion, A WOW expansion, a hearthstone one was just finished and they are in the middle of making a MOBA he does not have a point.
TWINxDiamonds No, he does have a point. When he said "Just look at how long Blizzard can go without adding new content," he is referring to WoW, which is currently going through the biggest gap between content in WoW history. The last major patch was released a little over a year ago. 1 year and nothing new besides minor additions and fixes. This is because they came out and said they will be pumping yearly expansions now, so that means less work on the content in this expansion, more work into the next one. And they don't care about losing subs currently, because they know they will make more money in the end when people buy the new expansion and resub to WoW. This is the mentality of corporate Activison (who merged with Blizzard). "Activision has now expanded the game's development team to accelerate content delivery, which includes expansions." I saw this line in an article and immediately knew that most of that accelerated content delivery would be going into expansions.
But you said it yourself; they are pumping out so many expansions and new games. Just as William Fenton said, they have grown into a mega corporate enterprise and as such now think like one. "How can we rake in the most amount of money" has become the #1 goal putting "How can we deliver the best games possible to our fans" in the backseat. I noticed this change in their philosophy when they started to introduce changes all throughout Cata to make the game more casual. If they make the game easy, the game becomes accessible to more people, more subs. From a business standpoint, it entirely makes sense. But it challenges the integrity of their original vision for the game. But hey, things change and there's not necessarily anything wrong with that. I have gotten older and as such haven't had as much time to play the game, so I welcome the change.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to hit them with the "evil, money grubbing corporation line." I'm merely calling it for how it is. I'm just saying they aren't that little game studio with a vision that they once were. They're able to cut corners, displease fans, and get away with it because they know they can. They know very well where they stand in the industry.
And so the legend was born...
I hope for a classic version of this to be released.
if this was in 2001 when was wc3 released?

***** Oh, when I look back now,

Been killing Old Gods and demon lords and Blood Gods from launch.
@@moscanaveia It's been scrapped to the ground since the game launch as you can see in alpha wow exploring videos. People think it's Activision who's ruined Blizzard but it's actually Blizzard themself cut off most of the game unique content becouse "it was too big".
@@jojojez4907 If you think the best form of the game was the pre-release alpha, then really I have to wonder why you even play tthe game. Do you?
@@jojojez4907 Like, really, it makes no sense. You're complaining about the game's epic storytelling scope, but this franchise was started when a portal was opened to another world full of bloodthirsty cruel orcs led by an evil warlock. The resolution of that first story is also the first two Raids in Warcraft history - the Alliance raiding Karazhan to kill Medivh and the Horde raiding Blackrock spire to kill Blackhand. Since then, one world has been destroyed, a Burning Legion tried to destroy another, Old Gods, Elemental Lords, big bad doomsday dragons, a dead king who wanted to kill everyone and raise them into undeath, the demon legion again, and so on and so forth. Boo-hoo, blizzard killed the game. Get real.
