I used to post on the forums in NA and was one of the more vocal people even just defiantly namedropping Nostalrius and Elysium while I was berating the flaws of the then current (WoD-Legion) expansion. A game a lot of people really don't give credit to here is RuneScape and I'll tell you why. Jagex implemented something to the game called Bonds, players could buy these with real life money then sell them on the Grand Exchange for player gold, these could be used by players for subscription time. They were a massive hit for the game. Blizzard a couple years later announced the token doing the same thing. One difference though is that in RuneScape you as a free player can actually accrue the money to buy a bond and Jagex just enjoys the benefit. Blizzard actively nerfs gold farms to push the sales higher. However for those not in the know with RuneScape, they made a series of sweeping changes but the most divisive was in 2012 called the Evolution of Combat. They basically radically changed the way you did combat, including actual hotkeyed abilities... in fucking RUNESCAPE, THE CLICKER GAME. Needless to say this decision was just forced through despite player bitching, developers were very much convinced fans just needed to see it to understand it... If you want to know where this story ends, Old School RuneScape was subsequently released in a desperate bid and has supplanted RS3 (the original servers and game) in popularity. Jagex themselves and I believe specifically Mod Ash stated that OSRS is a long campaign of winning back player trust over EOC.
Memories from Brazil here, monthly subscription wasn't a affordable reality until Cataclysm, in my country. I used to play it on lan houses which used their own modified pirated version, we would play for hours doing the most unoptimized random shit, basically strolling around the game world asking each other what to do. I never felt the same joy after I started a subscription in Cataclysm. Even though I tried playing it with 2 friends after school, we always felt like something was telling us to do shit instead of having fun.
I first started playing World of Warcraft in June 2005! I was hooked from the moment I logged on. Originally, I was going to make an Orc Warrior. But a friend convinced me to play Alliance instead. So, I made a NE Hunter and never looked back! I miss those old days, but I still enjoy World of Warcraft. I am not into private servers. My second server, Stormscale, became my Home server. I now have a guild on there, Order of Gwydion!
The clip of J.A.B. announcing Vanilla always gives me chills. Great vid! Also, your last video's background music gave me the urge to replay (and finish for once, I swear) FFX. Just found a deal yesterday and I'm in Kilika's Cloister of Trials! :D
Awesome video! I remember getting a wow trial back in vanilla and enjoyed it a lot. I remember being slightly scared of the Wandering Protectors in Ashenvale and overall having a great time playing. I then decided to play some more and spent a lot of my time leveling up in Westfall with a subscription and from I don't know how long, I ended up swimming up and down the Stranglethorn Vale fishing for the iron and mithril-bound trunks. It was MY way of playing the game and MY way of earning my own pocket of gold. Fast forward I joined a guild, got slapped by a ghost in Karazhan that aggroed and killed the whole guild, then I joined another guild in the Lich King expansion, got the turtle mount, Arthas blade and that was all she wrote. LK was the peak for me and vanilla was the womb that gave birth to some fantastic experiences!
What Blizzard doesn't realize.. is they are making history. Every move they make can either make Blizzard great again or push them further over the cliff. Vanilla WoW has so much potential; and can easily reignite the passion that lived and breathed throughout Classic WoW. There is no other game like Vanilla WoW and it will go down in history as the best MMORPG ever created. I hope to see my grand children playing World of Warcraft one day.
Oh wow! I have been out of the loop so long I had no idea any of this happened I last played in 2009 and am just returning trying to catch up with all the changes since Lich King. Thanks for this comprehensive historical overview.

the hardcore classic days spawned some of the funniest and best moments in classic wow IMO. ill never forget all those death clips and the OTK mak'gora.
Guys, if you haven't done it yet, give ascension wow a try. It is a really well run server with some of the best ideas I've seen in the genre. It's like Sod but way more in depth with crazy build variety.

"Monotonous Adonis". Brilliant, Sir. Your videos are amazing from front to back; but there are particular gems that you scatter about in them which add a special sparkle. I love everything you do. :)
For me... Cataclysm marked the beginning of the end of my journey with Retail WOW! Although funnily enough, I actually DID enjoy the high level stuff... Vashj'ir was Amazing!!! And I really did enjoy Deepholm! But levelling a new toon from scratch in the revamped Old World? Yeah... Something just felt... Broken... Off even!!! So much so, that I only managed to level just ONE toon, and simply levelled all my other high level toons to 85! So it was a VERY mixed bag! And even now it's been re-released as a Classic relaunch... I jumped in once, drooled at the VERY nice looking graphics... And then promptly jumped back into good ole Vanilla Hardcore! To immerse myself back into the original Old World... Along with the INSANE challenges that Hardcore provides! I had planned to play Cata Classic again with an Old Friend... But he no longer seems to be bothered anymore... And quite frankly... Neither am I!!!
I absolutely LOVE it when you throw the token back in their faces! I hope you find a way to throw it into every single video lol. Well done as always MadSeason!
Great video, Madseason. SoD p4 comes out soon, and the news has been dropping like hotcakes. I think people are getting excited about the latest season again. I've heard quite a few people mention that a re-release of Classic TBC would be great. I hope they do that at some point, despite the classic community already being spread between so many versions.
I started playing Ascension, season 9 after P2 of SoD and I've not had more fun in WoW for easily 10+ years. It's like a breath of fresh air. Not to mention the game is actually being actively developed unlike umm...whatever is happening to Classic and it's iterations by Aggrend and pals :D
I do feel Old School Runescape's success did give an indicator that old versions of WoW can thrive and be profitable. Given how it was insanely popular beyond nostalgia and eclipsed the main game in terms of popularity.
The wow classic announcement still gives me goosebumps. Played when it when t came. Had to quit (again) but then started again autum 2023 and in January this year I got my first Kel'Thuzad-kill ever. Now I can finally rest.
Take me back to Nostalrius man. I remember when that server hit about 6k players, it was nuts. Every area of the world was busy and bustling, you could get a group for anything and there wasn't mara spams in chat or anything silly like that. Sure 300 ping wasn't ideal, but damn did it feel like I had 2004/05 Vanilla back, technically two times more than my old haunt Azgalor back in the day.
I (re)subbed for wow classic I resubbed for season of mastery I resubbed for classic hc I recubbed for season of discovery Blizz has my number and they know what I want. Gimme fresh classic and I'm there :). My pick for next resub would be a season of cooperation, just regular vanilla but all mobs are elite. I think the added incentive to play together would be very enjoyable.
Mad thanks again for blessing us with another upload. As i sit here on my only day off in weeks, i really look forward to sitting down with a nice cheeseburger and watching your videos. Thanks mad and godspeed.
Man I remember my friends older brother installing the game for my friend and I and helped us get on to a private server in 2005. There were a lot of private servers even then, played on many before convincing my parents to pay for a subscription in 2006.
When I was a kid I didn't have money to pay for a subscription fee to play WoW. So I started playing on private servers for TBC and then moved on to WOTLK. Those were some amazing days. Private servers in that era were truly something else.
RIP nostalrius what an amazing wow experience that server was. I was shocked when they announced classic at blizzcon and hilarious to think how few servers they had planned originally. I played on stalagg and it was crazy to experience that 2019 launch
I first played wow on a shitty laptop with 56k dial up internet. It was laggy, sometimes because of the shitty computer, sometimes because of the internet, but it was playable... actually the internet lag wasn't such a problem, it mostly put you 1 or 2 attacks behind the reality of the situation. Mostly you couldn't even feel the lag, and when you did it was mostly like all the sudden the enemy was dead, or all the sudden you're fighting 2 mobs instead of 1 etc it was good enough for me and I fucking loved it. Never loved a game more. The feelings that i felt while playing back then, i can't put into words and have never felt that way since.
Beautiful story telling. Enjoyed from start to end. I could watch you saying I told you so over and over again and it makes me smile inside every time. Truth hurts.
Vanilla WOW is still the best MMO ever made and the fact it can be played without any addons has HUGE appeal to a lot of players. If they removed and blocked the ability for any addons to be added into Retail that would be a HUGE step in the right direction if they don't then the majority of their Player Base will sit happy on the Vanilla servers.
I cant get enough of the story about the monotonous adonis who has forseen the future and up to this day can quote himself and telling the others that he told them so! I love it every single time it´s in your videos
Wow classic launch is a day I will never forget. It was a day that I was excited about finally getting to play vanilla wow after hearing so much about it throughout the years and the same time a day of grief. The night during launch if wow classic my best friend my dog of many years had to be put down because of cancer and my heart couldn’t take it especially going with her to the vet to get euthanasia. I stayed home and cried my eyes out while also being distracted and experiencing the launch of classic.
I'm always chasing the feeling of wonder and immersion that I got from leveling my first toon during BC. 2019 vanilla is the closest I've gotten. I feel like I missed SoD, but will maybe catch the next one.
It's actually crazy how good the presentation of the Vanilla project is. And in stark contrast to how out of touch he was during the panel where he was asked ("you don't want that")... when he says "your favorite flavor... is vanilla!", it still gives me chills.
Man I was so hyped when they announced WOW Classic. And it was so fun to play for a good two years. Those first 6 months were the best. Even with those that played “hardcore” the rest of us just were chill and had fun with leveling with friends. Life was good.
This was a great and informative video on the events around Classic WoW. I was there when it first started, being young and not having disposable income or stable internet connection at home for the monthly subscription meant that I was going on private servers when visiting friends which probably ran the leaked alpha version at the time. I recall it being a buggy, laggy mess but damn did it have charm... And when I eventually started playing retail off and on again I also felt the decline in focus, charm and character with each expansion. It was a shame to see a once great game studio go down like this. As for the origin story, I think you could have spent a little more time on Warcraft 3 since it hardly got a mention, but the Warcraft 3 TFT expansion started off with the Rexxar campaign which many consider a prelude to what WoW would eventually become.
I’m a relatively new player and would love to play the older expansions but collections are a big part of my game and I’d like to keep what I collect into retail. The new remix does that part wonderfully.
It took me several weeks upon started wow for the first time to realize that classic BC and classic Wrath were on a different type of server than regular classic

The clip of J.A.B. announcing Vanilla always gives me chills. Great vid!
Also, your last video's background music gave me the urge to replay (and finish for once, I swear) FFX. Just found a deal yesterday and I'm in Kilika's Cloister of Trials! :D
His voice is so relaxing. It's comforting. The nostalgia hits so hard when he talks about it.
BABE WAKE UP, NEW MADSEASONSHOW VID
Me and my homies are riding the turtle, have been for a couple years now. Great server
Shoutout for the turtle
Been playing turtle since 2022. I think its the best vanilla experience you can get at the moment ❤
It weirdly enough feels more "Classic" than Classic WoW did, even though Turtle has extra content.
Idk, Lineage 2 Interlude was the best RPG, especially by its special social gameplay and interactions, which is the main thing to me in mmos.
Well, for that to happen you'd have to talk to a girl first.
@@romaroalte2645 you are free to find lineage 2 the better rpg, but lineage 2 didn't had the succes wow had.
I will never stop enjoying MadSeason's videos about wow!
And I want 2019 vanilla Classic to be released again with progression
Oh wow! I have been out of the loop so long I had no idea any of this happened I last played in 2009 and am just returning trying to catch up with all the changes since Lich King. Thanks for this comprehensive historical overview.
turtle wow is fun and classic plus, new custom zones items and talents. new karazhan 40 raid is coming up, and the Emerald Sanctum 40 raid is custom too, great community too!
I think you mean that we were all waiting for warcraft 4. We already had Warcraft 3, and The Frozen Throne expansion.
the hardcore classic days spawned some of the funniest and best moments in classic wow IMO. ill never forget all those death clips and the OTK mak'gora.
Guys, if you haven't done it yet, give ascension wow a try. It is a really well run server with some of the best ideas I've seen in the genre. It's like Sod but way more in depth with crazy build variety.
What a great Clip. Just started new on Zandalar Tribe EU🥳. Thanks a lot 👍🏻😍
@Madseasonshow , I absolutely love the videos. As I relive the best moments playing through classic rerolls. It’s your videos on the background during the grind. Love the show. Keep up the good work
I love your videos MadSeasonShow, you really know what you are talking about and you have made me love Vanilla more and more. I am gona join phase 4 that comes to Classic SoD and i hope that they have done it well and that we how loves Vanilla can enjoy it. Please continue to do more videos about Vanilla, thats the high point everyday i start up youtube and see if there is something new from you :)
Hard to believe Blizz took 13 years to find the copy of classic when it was right in front of their eyes.
"Monotonous Adonis". Brilliant, Sir. Your videos are amazing from front to back; but there are particular gems that you scatter about in them which add a special sparkle. I love everything you do. :)
It's starting to feel like every video mad uploads is an excuse to slip in the "I told you so" bit and I'm all for it.
..I miss WoW. A lot. I just don't know where to start anymore.
Turtle wow
"The monotonous Adonis"
You're such a precious item man, rofl. Keep them Nostalgicraft videos coming!
Man seeing that 2017 announcement again brought a tear to my eye.
Big shocker: cata classic drove more people to the private servers.
I do feel Old School Runescape's success did give an indicator that old versions of WoW can thrive and be profitable. Given how it was insanely popular beyond nostalgia and eclipsed the main game in terms of popularity.
I love how you treat the WoW Token debacle like a trophy. XD
The wow classic announcement still gives me goosebumps. Played when it when t came. Had to quit (again) but then started again autum 2023 and in January this year I got my first Kel'Thuzad-kill ever. Now I can finally rest.
That intro is just so good that it makes me press the like button for the video in literally the first 5 seconds.
I'd stay up into the wee hours of the night and play with all of the Europeans and Chinese. The world was bustling 24/7. Nothing will ever compare.
I honestly think COVID-19 Catalyzed Classic as a huge part of its popularity.
Playing Vanilla HC 1-3 months a year, its the perfect nostalgia trip with the leveling zones
Even to this day when I hear the "...your favorite flavor is vanilla!" I get goosebumps. That classic announcement was so epic.
I love how madseason will never let the wow token thing go, bask in that vindication brother you earned it
To this day, when I hear "your favorite flavor... is vanilla" I can't help but cheer :D
Stay awesome Madseason, we love your vids.
I (re)subbed for wow classic
I resubbed for season of mastery
I resubbed for classic hc
I recubbed for season of discovery
Blizz has my number and they know what I want. Gimme fresh classic and I'm there :). My pick for next resub would be a season of cooperation, just regular vanilla but all mobs are elite. I think the added incentive to play together would be very enjoyable.
League of Legends came out in 2009. I know people who never played WoW again after that.
League ruled PC gaming between 09-14.
Mad thanks again for blessing us with another upload. As i sit here on my only day off in weeks, i really look forward to sitting down with a nice cheeseburger and watching your videos. Thanks mad and godspeed.
"What If" series. People would love it!!! Seriously, that would be an epic series, and I don't think anyone has done it in capacity yet.
14:37 Props, the best music for "you think you do, but you don't" IS the Goldeneye n64 Music!
RIP nostalrius what an amazing wow experience that server was. I was shocked when they announced classic at blizzcon and hilarious to think how few servers they had planned originally. I played on stalagg and it was crazy to experience that 2019 launch
Never got into the WoW scene when it came out, but MadSeason makes me nostalgic thinking about it
Leveling in Vanilla is GOAT, PVP / Shuffle in Retail is really sophisticated
Madseason pushing out these banger videos at the speed of light... Crazy, top man. 👍🏻
"told you so, btw" lol LOVE IT!
Im enjoying this as always, and it's strange that I'm replaying this three times in row, love u Mads
Glad you make more videos. Morning coffe and watching this is golden.
Turtle WoW best version hands down and gets better every week
I'm always chasing the feeling of wonder and immersion that I got from leveling my first toon during BC. 2019 vanilla is the closest I've gotten. I feel like I missed SoD, but will maybe catch the next one.
Dear Mad season, thank you for the content! I am addicted to watching your videos. Absolutely love it.
It's actually crazy how good the presentation of the Vanilla project is. And in stark contrast to how out of touch he was during the panel where he was asked ("you don't want that")... when he says "your favorite flavor... is vanilla!", it still gives me chills.
Hugely helpful. Thank you!
MadSeason is love, MadSeason is life.
I was there. At that blizzcon. Crowd went nuts.
God... that vanilla icecream line reveal was so epic when it happened.
Oh my glorious magnificent champion Madseason has blessed us with another Weekend banger
I’m a relatively new player and would love to play the older expansions but collections are a big part of my game and I’d like to keep what I collect into retail. The new remix does that part wonderfully.
We’d love to have you over here on Old School RuneScape MadSeason, you and Jimmy need to play / make a video together !
Thanks for the support, Runescape video in the plans :D
So well organized and clearly true. Mad respect to mad season. Now I want to play turtlewow again.
It took me several weeks upon started wow for the first time to realize that classic BC and classic Wrath were on a different type of server than regular classic
Back at it again telling the story of WoW and I’m back listening!
