    The coolest thing that WOW did was there icon design…forever I will remember those first few quests I did and drag and dropping icons into my bag, and the most vivid vision appeared in my head. These icons are perfect! They really made a great visual representation of things. My Tauren body model also impressed me, loved this game.

      This was before AAA game sensationalism, before "data mining" was so widespread it ruined any sense of mystery a game had.
      Additionally, the original WoW designers were veterans of much more hardcore MMOs like EverQuest.

      @@m1bl4n I think it was more that back then they got given the green light to make this project, the person backing the project believed in it because they were close to the lead developers behind it and saw their talents in previous products they shipped. When it was greenlit I'm sure the developers weren't thinking "how do we make sure that by the end of this we really please not only our boss but every investor in the company" it was more like "we got the greenlight, we know what we want, we know what will work even if it seems like a risk, we truly believe that this is what the customer is searching for" So lightning in a bottle it just all alligned and so you have this beautiful mix of a commercial product becoming successful and also there's no cynism for failure because they are all together with the same common goal.
      Today when it comes to these major studios that Blizzard themselves became and sort of guided the industry to follow they are being handled by people who are only in it for the bottom line, they aren't in the entertainment buisness they are constantly making every year go up in profit so when a development team gets to pitch a new idea they have to make sure all these bullet points are mentioned or it just gets shot down. Blizzard themselves had so much trouble originally pitching the game that became Overwatch, they finally had to settle to make a first person online shooter to get the green light.

    Wow. So the whole Opening of Ahn'Qiraj was originally supposed to be used for opening the Dark Portal. Interesting.
    I guess they also had all of the basic story progression concepts from Vanilla to Wrath planned since the beginning. All the vanilla stuff, the concept of readjourning with Illidan in Outland, and marching into Northrend to take down Arthas.
    I guess my suspicions were right, then. The story of Warcraft pretty much honorably ended with 3.3.5, and everything from Cataclysm onward was like the proverbial "mediocre second season of the tv show". :p

    1:06 This is what modern wow does so wrong for me. It's the polar opposite to what he is saying there. Nobody cares about the gear you get while leveling, or the proffesions. Like you only look at the experience bar wishing you could just skip the entire process. What I loved about old wow is that I never really wanted to level that fast, often because I had gotten a lot of very strong equipment for my level, and that made me feel stronger than others at the same level as me, and I wanted that to last as long as possible.
    Like the satisfying feeling of being around level 30-40 in stv, having bis gear for your level and just having that advantage in world pvp against other players at around your level, god that was such good times. Like modern wow is just so tunneled towards the end game (which I dont particularly like anyway), which makes it so much less of an mmo compared to the past.

    "Every time that you log into the game you can accomplish something. Even though you might not achieve a new level that night of gameplay, you might finish one or two quests or you might earn a new rank in a trade skill, or explore a new zone. That way you are not so focused on the experience bar the entire time you're playing. Your only goal in the game is not necessarily leveling up but it's completing quests and visiting new areas, learning new skills - always developing your character."

      We the players changed too. We weren't about minmaxing back then. It wasn't that important. We didn't want to do things as fast as possible, we just had fun. You can't do an MMO like WoW ever again, because datamining has ruined any kind of surprise. The internet is full of guides and people are all about streamlining their gaming to the extreme, not about immersing yourself in a world.

More harsh pirate ish humans like the models from early wow. different troll tribes and for the undead, some skeletons, ghuls, necromancers or even a lich when you play a mage. A bunch of not publicly known designers/developers "left" blizzard when it became "activision" blizzard - but the most KNOWN guys are still hired and on different projects - thats correct. It is pretty usuall to hire a lot of designers during the making process and later on to "fire" them (expired contracts) in the game industry.
    But tbh. I don't want to talk anymore about WoW.

    This commentary from Rob Pardo and Jeff Kaplan offers a lot of insight into many of the design decisions that gave World of Warcraft such broad, widespread appeal. A minimal but extremely flexible UI, a quest log that gives a sense of direction and purpose from start to finish, and clever class-design choices to ensure they feel unique and fun all contributed to a game that was easy to play but difficult to master; and probably more importantly, offered a lot of customisation in the way people interact with the game. This was ground-breaking stuff for online games in 2004. In the beginning, researching other games was key to developing an idea of what people found fun in online RPGs. Many MMORPGs today try to imitate, and sometimes copy directly, what WoW has done correctly, and this is one of the very first points that stands out to me. Many imitators seem to have tried to lift directly from WoW rather than researching what players find fun first-hand. Online games mature and change rapidly, and things that players found fun yesterday they won’t necessarily find fun today. The way many of WoW’s gameplay systems have changed over time reflect this.

      Common should be common. Magic should be the "confetti", rare should be rare, Epic should be hard to get, Legendary should be just that; legendary and even harder to get. And when you get it you'll get that legendary feeling for having achieved something glorious. Without that it's just gear you don't really want because it's just in your way of- and doesn't help you in- getting what you really want...

    • @randzopyr1038
      @randzopyr1038 6 років тому +2

      It is interesting to learn that Fishing was intended to be a secondary profession in the most basic sense - see a lake, fish for 2-3 min, move on. I think a lot of new MMORPG players played like that during vanilla (I know friends and I did) and it increased immersion because it was more about having something to do than it was about min-maxing. But Vanilla was different in so many ways even from BC and it's hard to replicate the experience of having more than half your player base NOT at level cap because leveling takes so long.
      I'm looking forward to what the new expansion will bring to the game - if it does to leveling what it's hinting at then it could at least revitalize the old world and make it fun to level again, although I doubt they'll ever nerf XP back to BC or Wrath levels because they don't want to discourage what few new players they get.
