    passing by, giving support
    btw, with the battalion box, for shooters, you can also go with 10 quarrellers, 10 thunderers and 12 rangers (using all the cloaked backs, including the warriors ones, they are 16 in total, and the other 4 you can use for unit champions)
    in 7th edition the "suggested" longbeards (by the book) were warriors with masks, white beards, and gold almost everywere

    You can definitely make Longbeards from the Warriors in the battalion box. Also, Rangers from the quarreler/thunderer box. I haven’t been able to find any reason to run basic Warriors in any configuration. Core- Rangers, quarrelers and/or thunderers. Might as well give everybody great weapons since, unless you’re using the builds from the arcane journal, you’re not going to be getting many charges anyway. And if by some miracle you actually get off a charge, and have the initiative, and are up against lightly armoured models, you can always claim hand weapons and shield since the great weapons don’t replace the hand weapons. Also, plenty of options to create both lords and thanes from the basic Warriors/Longbeards boxes. Not to mention BSB’s.

    • @DecrepitGaming
      @DecrepitGaming  5 місяців тому

      Great reply earnest. I am glad to hear that the basic troops are easily converted. As you say it’s probably wise to arm everyone you can with a great weapon as your probably hitting last anyway and may as well do as much damage as possible

      @monkeypoo3000 5 місяців тому

      How do you convert the warriors to longbeards and quarrelers into rangers?

    • @earnestwanderer2471
      @earnestwanderer2471 5 місяців тому +1

      The Warriors box comes with dopey little masks that you’re supposed to glue on to indicate that they’re Longbeards. I don’t bother. I just use heads that have horned helmets and paint the beards white and grey. For the Rangers I just use the quarrelers as normal but paint the clothing in browns and greens, armour black with a light dark bronze drybrush, and since I give them shields, muted colors and dark bronze furniture.

  • @earnestwanderer2471
    @earnestwanderer2471 5 місяців тому +1

    I’ve had some decent results using line infantry (hammerers, Longbeards and/or iron breakers) in units of 24... 8x3. You can take up to 4 casualties before you lose the full rank bonus and you get 8 potential attacks at AP-2.
    This box is excellent value, and everything can be used with a little imagination.
    Blocky is dwarfs. The current units are so much better than the first generation Warriors/quarrelers.

    • @DecrepitGaming
      @DecrepitGaming  5 місяців тому

      The troops in the battalion box look great it’s really the iron breakers that don’t “do it for me “ I am fortunate that I still have a unit of old metal iron breakers in a box somewhere in my shed. Almost time to dig some stuff out. I agree that the battalion box is good value it’s the additional stuff that will break the bank, an example would be your 24 man units which by the way is a great number for a unit. Problem is the £52.50 boxes are 20 strong, so either we are talking proxies or £105 for a unit of iron breakers or hammerers. Starts to get expensive quickly doesn’t it. Not a big deal for some folks but a big deal for others.

    • @earnestwanderer2471
      @earnestwanderer2471 5 місяців тому

      I think that when you dig out your old Ironbreakers, and get a good look at then, you’re going to see that they’re not very different from the new plastics. Monopose, smaller overall and still basically just a dwarf in full armour with a bit of beard sticking out. The old metal hammerers were even worse. Absolutely the same model with the exact same pose... repeated. I actually traded my old metals for boxes of the AoS dispossessed dwarfs, and am merrily painting them using more current techniques. The best, in game, waac (🙂) use for the Ironbreaker/Drakes box is to build them as Irondrakes in units of 5, to maximize the number of torpedoes you can take. As far as price goes, remember that the AoS boxes were 10 per, not 20 so you’re only paying £26 per box, comparatively. The bloody things were $55 a box of 10 over here, as AoS models. Last point, you can use thematic unit fillers in larger units or just stick a few odd, appropriately painted, models in. It’s easy to convert Warriors, from the battalion box, to hammerers, for example. The Warriors come with the option of setting them up with great weapons, held in two hands, just like the Hammerers. The only problem is that all the two handed weapons are great axes. But it’s a minute’s work to snip the hammer head off the hand weapons and replace the axe head.

    • @DecrepitGaming
      @DecrepitGaming  5 місяців тому

      @@earnestwanderer2471 all valid points, and I quite possibly have the rose tinted glasses on when thinking about the old metal models. I will buy some of the new ones before I make any further comment. I also wasn't taking into consideration just how easy it is to convert plastics. a pair of side cutters and some plastic cement, job done.

    I would love to get back into Warhammer The Old World (Fantasy) with official products, but they've just priced the game way out of my budget

    • @DecrepitGaming
      @DecrepitGaming  5 місяців тому

      Indeed they have, I can't agree with anyone that claims inflation or luxury hobby. At the end of the day they are reselling old miniatures that have paid for themselves already. The new stuff being a bit more expensive than the old stuff I could understand. I would recommend the battalion box to anyone thinking of a Dwarf army. Then I would recommend 3rd party manufacturers for all the bells and whistles miniatures. Anyone who complains that your miniatures are not official is a gimp/simp. Do not be put off the game by the cost, make it work. Heck I remember recently seeing an official article promoting the use of unit fillers (something I would never have dreamt GW would ever have done).
