Dwarfs were not really an out and out gunline in the past. Sure, they used shooting to force the opponent to close the gap, but you still fielded blocks of combat infantry for when the armies clashed. It was more of a static heavy infantry / shooting mix. Dwarfs are in a rough spot this edition. As you said, in order to compete you need a tuned list, and even then it can be an uphill struggle. They are an infantry army and infantry in general is not in a good place.
The Dwarfs have miniatures from the 1990's to 2010's so some of them will not match styles. You can use Fyreslayers instead of the old slayers if you do not like the old styles.
