You took the words out of my mouth. Alex, I’d even say go to the live video from, like Danish TV or something, not the Made in Japan LP version - also spectacular, but you got to see it. It will blow your mind.
Ever since I started listening to MISA from Band-Maid, I have fallen in love with bass, and I try listening for it in all songs now😂. The bass work on this song is great
Ian Gillan's voice is not powerful enough for you? LOL. Purely a result of the mix. Ian is one of the best vocalists of the time. Even fronted Black Sabbath for one album.
You probably heard D.P. Highway Star Live at the Beat Club. Ian really cuts loose on this song. Just thought id mention it in case you did not see it before.
Alex, what you’re hearing is the playing of actual instruments with a minimum of digitally computerized enhancements unlike what passes for most of what is considered music today.
I don't know what you're hearing there Alex, but Ian Gillan is one of the best rock singers of all time. Not powerful? Hmmmm maybe it's the mix - try Highway Star, Speed King, Space Truckin, Lazy, Woman From Tokyo, etc. And THAT guitar player is Richie F'n Blackmore - a LEGEND
I suggest you LISTEN to the 1968 Pink Panther cartoon "We Give Pink Stamps" at around the 2:20 mark - and you will here this riff played on a trumpet (and again around 3:30.) Written by William Lava.
@@carylawson-le7ogIan Gillan is not the singer in the Burn track but it is David Coverdale cause Ian left the band before they came out with the Burn album.
The grit and roll emotion that you're trying to find in. Today's music it's very simple to find period. Just look inside any voice changer machine and you'll find your raw grit and authenticity in a stupid voice tuner. That's the problem. Everything's voice tuned in the studio, then people can't sing. That's right, I'm gonna go out and say. Taylor Swift couldn't carry a tone in a dump truck. She's all auto tune boo. Bad girl boo get alive. Text some of those billions you got and get a voi. Guess you don't matter when you get rich though I see her point. JUST sayn .
You will get plenty of grief for the comment about Ian Gillan's vocals, one of the greatest and most powerful vocalists in rock. Still rocking today too! The man is a living legend, keep digging in the Purple well Alex lol
No doubt. But Alex is uninitiated, at this point..He will probably end up buying all their albums..Just seems like his type of band , as far as classic rock n roll
Having just turned 63, I grew up with Deep Purple and other amazing rock bands. Would love to see your reaction to some Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Wishbone Ash. I’ll be the old lady in the nursing home head banging to Metallica. 🤟🏻
I've been a fan of Ritchie Blackmore / Deep Purple for years, including Blackmore's Night. Thanks Alex for playing this old classic. P.S. Alex if, possible, give a little love to Blackbriar.
Not a fumbled lyric. He's singing about The Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio that was housed in a truck. The Stones used it in France when they recorded Exile On Main St. Led Zeppelin also used it for recording their third album.
I was 12 in 1972 and every kid I know was walking around playing this rift on air guitar, including me! : ) We didn't even know what the song was about. : ) LOL!
In 2019 I seen Deep Purple live with Judas Priest what an incredible night of rock and roll Ian Gillen and Rob Halford in one night it was an awesome night
When I was about 12-13 (early-mid 1980's) years old I was at a guitar shop looking to buy a new guitar and I was playing this song and out of no where Richie Blackmore came around a stack of amps and showed me the correct way to play the guitar intro!! Man I was so lucky!
Thank you, Alex ! This was one of the first 3 songs I learned to play when I first started playing bass at 17. Many many years later(about 18), I'm still listening to Deep Purple and loving every single song. Listen to every song and you will learn something from each one. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.
You reacted to child in time and Highway star so you know he has a powerful voice you probably just don’t remember.. you were pretty much blown away by his vocals on both those songs.
If you want a real experience of Deep Purple you need to listen to the entire live album made in Japan. This is the band that got me into Rock and roll.
Deathspell Omega-Abscission This song basically breaks all the boundaries of music theory yet makes an otherworldly masterpiece. You need to hear this.
You wanna trip to a different side of music? Richie Blackmore, founding member and guitarist of Deep Purple, formed a band with his now wife, Candace Night called Blackmore's Night. He went from psychedelic rock here to folk/medieval rock. Shadow of the moon is one of their first singles; under a violet moon is pretty good, and fires at midnight goes from wiccan/pagan feel to here's an electric guitar solo. Worth a listen imo
Whoever shot that flare gun did two things... Inspired a great song ....and was rightly called "stupid" billions of times ( each time the song was played )
This song has actually led to me finding some of my current favorite bands. My dad listened to the band a lot when I was younger, and this song always stuck to me. So when I realized you could hear music on UA-cam, that's what I looked up first. I found a Spongebob music video, and watched it a lot, and eventually found another one, with Stricken by Disturbed. And from there on, I just listened to whatever I could find, picking my favorites by sound alone, and also eventually learned English to understand the lyrics.
Dude, I love music and grew up with my dad listening to this type of music. While I love that music is such a part of me, I do wish I could somehow also have the experiences Alex has of discovering for the first time, classic songs of their genre, like he does all the time on this channel with both new and older music. What a gift. As a child, I can see I was gifted with being exposed to a wide gamut of music, but only in hindsight.
Deep Purple just released a cover of "7 and 7 is" and the band sounds amazing today, even with singer Ian Gillan over 70 yrs of age (so is drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover) Their 2020 album "Whoosh!" also sounds great 🔥🤘🤘
Also a 94 baby waddup lol 😁 I admit I hadn't heard this song much as a kid but it wasn't until Guitar Hero that I really heard it a lot of times & now, it's always a bop.
We need more Ritchie Blackmore love here: Rainbow: Kill The King, Long Live Rock & Roll, Death Alley Driver, Magic, Hunting Humans (Insatiable), Hall of the Mountain King Blackmore's Night: Under A Violet Moon, Lorelei, Ghost of a Rose, Just Call My Name (I'll Be There)
Deep Purple is still some of the really heavily underappreciated bands that shaped Metal genre for me. One reason is fixation on this song and other is how much they defined heavy metal "groove", dark and heavy atmosphere of the songs. To really experience it, I suggest Black Night (also first song ever I learned on guitar, Smoke was too mainstream :P )
Really glad you've taken a step into Deep Purple Though I will say, There's a lot of Deep Purple song's where Ian really show's his stuff. Why? If he wants to listen to a powerful voice, he should listen to Bloodsucker or Into The Fire or Fools or No No No No or Rat Bat Blue or Place In Line and other Mk 2 songs - Gillan is incredible, he is more diverse and exquisite singer than Coverdale or Hughes.
There are of course the guitar riff but a lot of it are also Jon Lord's Hammond Organ. Went to a concert once where Danish Hammond God Palle Hjorth played the riff. Then you really understand how much organ there are on the Smoke on the Water riff
Alex. Glad to see you're at it. This tune was played constantly when I was tossing pizzas at an old Italian joint. Imagine a bunch of short skirted young waitresses boogeying to this. Golden times brother.

I just came here to say exactly that.
Pretty sure he has already
I had to comment too James, Ian's vocals on Child in time are spellbinding.
His voice is weak
Roger Glover's bass work in this song is perfection and never gets enough attention!
Sure it does!

Nah, it's universally known that Ian is underwhelming and held the band back ..
His voice sounds surprisingly weak on "Machine Head" - it is far more powerful live on "Made in Japan" and all the other albums of DP mark2.
A few years back I saw DP co-headline with Judas Priest. It was KILLER!

Ian Gillan doesn't have a powerful voice? Oh dear. Alex, Alex Alex.

Best badass riffs ever!
I still have the original vinyl of this album. Masterpiece
Thanks for your reaction, Buddy Holly.
Fun fact, according to Ritchie Blackmore this iconic riff he came up with is the reverse playing of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
I was 4 when this song came out ... it was on the radio several times a day .. on every station
As a teen in 1972, this was maybe the 4th or 5th album that I bought! Its a masterpiece of classic rock! Your comments are spot on Alex.
