I saw that exact tour in Indianapolis, Indiana on Dec. 18th, 1993…That was the night that Tip and Phife from A Tribe Called Quest got into a fight with each over about a girl or something…
This song was on every answering machine at the time. Yes young folk an answering machine, a separate piece of equipment connected to your phone with a mini cassette tape in it !
There is so much imagery that has flickered in my mind for so many years watching vids as a kid until I watched this again a few years ago and realized where it was coming from. Such simple visual setups yet paired with the memorizing beat, it makes this a video that's whole equal so much more than the parts. It is brilliant after all of these years. Thank you for shouting out the director.
"So no problemo. Just play your demo and after the end it's breakout time. Please oh please don't press rewind because I will lay it down the line." Classic hip-hop.
This song will always resonate with me. When it first came out, we played this over and over. Cut to me and some friends speeding down this narrow street got into a major car accident flipping the car over, ended up upside down; radio still blasting this song.
Years ago, I made a ringtone from this song, so every time somebody calls, I hear De La Soul singing "Hey, how you doin'? Sorry you can't get through. Why don't leave your name and number, and I'll get back to you..."
I was a white kid who grew up listening to rock-VH, Bon Jovi, Crue. My older bro had 3 ft High in like 88-89 and I listened to it all summer of 89. I fell in love with hip hop and rnb. By 91-when this came out, hip hop was soundtrack to my life and Dela was one my fav groups. This is from 2nd album-just as good as 3ft high. This was lead single. Funny but sad story is when this came out, I was about 13. We used to hang out with these hot older chicks who were like 16. I knew they liked me but I’m sure they we reluctant to hook up with a 13 year old (I was very good looking growing up from what people would say) plus they had older bfs. Anyway, I’m out front of her apartment with one the older girls and her older cousin where she lived with her mom. Her older cousin heard me singing this song to myself and he’s like “how do you know that song?”. I’m like, I love Dela. And we had a good laugh. Anyway, that girl has been gone now for several years-I believe she had addiction issues. Crazy how music can bring you immediately back to a time many years ago. RIP PLUG 3 and Nicole L
God I was so eager for the first new tune to come out after 3 ft high. Got it the day it came out and I knew immediately the new album would not dissapoint. The videoclip also looks way better than the usual clips from that time. Also god I love the vinyl crackle of the samples. De La Soul you have a special place in my heart forever ❤
When this song came out it was like a whole new De la soul from the first album. I loved the De La Soul is Dead album. This song and that album made me a de La Soul fan
Dayem feels like yesterday, but also so tame compared to current rhymes and beats... I still feel so much love, and that era totally paved the way for current and emerging artists
I was already a big De La Soul fan in high school, but man was i stoked when this song was featured on the SPIN Magazine sampler cassette in fall '91. Totally showing my age here .. 😅😅
This song is a sample of a song that was a number 1 hit in Europe back in 1989 called Name and Number by the British band called Curiosity Killed the Cat 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/iS4gWWCT0Bg/v-deo.htmlsi=t9rs0nl3xpM-KdJE
they're sophomore "Dead" album was just as Refreshing as their debut Geniuses always reinvent and these 3 are still thriving; even in Dave's death- Rest in Power, TrugoY
Same. Don’t know why, but yeah. At least in my case I’m guessing mtv had it in heavier rotation in reality than how I remember it now, so it just stuck in my head. Super catchy.
Heyy yoo yoo I put this on my answering machine back in the day, everyone loved hearing it and was like.....wwhhhaaaattttt !! 😎💯❤💥👀🕺🌹🌹🌹🌹🥨🫖🔥✨🎃🎯🪅🎭💎🎩 NOT garbage !! LOL!
i love american rap from those years 80,90,s and when it' s beghinnin in france i fallin love of many groups!!!rap is not dead !!!more old was borned more people have knew his importance in our society!!!thanks
God, I loved this in my youth and still do now. I think its being used as part of Sky Sports promotion for the NFL. Can't get this song outta my head, I don't want to either.
Is that really from 1991? 32 years ago? Still as fresh as it was back in the days !!!

@@invisiblerevolutionUmmm nah my guy this shit dropped in 91, better do some research. That's all I'm saying 😂
@quietstorm2460

maybe I didn't first hear it in 1989, *BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT* I first saw the video in 1990!
Miss the great old MTV days.
And the bass line is wicked.
Whenever this song played on MTV the whole bloody house used to bounce. Love this song with all my heart.
No cussing, just beats and spitting ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Hi😊.
❤
Still one of the best hip hop tracks of all time.
I think this was the first hip hop track I ever heard. And it's still one of the best.
imagine if music was all down hill for you after this one. Gratefully, De La & others just kept expanding and getting better. What a solid entry
How old were you at the time?
@@muxnod9857 I would have been around 10 or 11.
@@DodderingOldMan Cool. I was 10 years old in 1979 when Rappers Delight came out.
This is one of the best tracks ever recorded. Not just in the hip hop genre, either.
1991 was one of the best years in hip hop. So many classics came out that year.
SO TRUE! I was 20 in the navy and we used to crank this at sea! ♥️
I was 11 years old in '91. Myself & two mates performed this tune in drama class at school.
The. Coolest. I've. Ever. Been! 😂
One of the best and catchiest songs of all times nyc was popping
Love this song so much. Wish people still made music like this. ❤️
yeeeeeeeees
Now we have Stormzy and other talentless frauds. 🤮
I miss the 90s
I saw a Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Souls of Mischief perform at a small venue in L.A. back in 1993 with a fake I.D. Those were the days! 😢
I would kill for that experience god dayum

And this comment is proof that you have a very narrow, limited idea of hip hop
@@spek-27 that proove that you don't know most of clip of rap are full of drugs and half naked girls so yes he is right ;)

I think you're gettin wrongly offended... and didn't read his message correctly.

Been listening to this since it just came out and just notice each of them does the chorus individually before their verse #levels
They do something similar on that song they did with Common
Good stuff coming from a classically trained brass composer & player of Jazz & Classical music. DLS ... The Stakes Are High 🎉
