    A word about center pull vs. outer pull of a yarn skein. It is about the direction of the twist. I am sure we have all experienced when sewing-by-hand that sometimes the thread kinks, and twists, and knots for seemingly no reason. It is because the wrong end of the thread was used when threading, and the twist of the thread was compounding, not lessening. It is the same with yarn. If a yarn asks for outer pull, it is because of the direction of its twist. It will lay flatter if the recommended pull is followed. (In thread the easiest way to remember - closest to the spool is closest to the tool) Really enjoy these mysteries. Thank you for making them!

      I'm wondering, would this also depend on handedness? ie, would a left handed person be okay using a center pull on yarn marked outerpull?

      @@nell6913I crochet lefthanded and the twist of the yarn or wool tends to loosen. I don't get much clogging but I do get what people call splitting but it's just untwisting.

    I actually know why this pattern was so difficult- you were missing the description for the raised stitch! I found this book on the internet archive, and right underneath the border description is "description of star or fan stitch" which is the raised section. "turn the 3rd corner" refers to how you work the shawl only on 3 sides of the starting square- then you physically turn the work and start stitching back in the other direction. I'm working through this pattern right now and so far it's confusing but infinitely more doable with the special stitch section included.

      I don't know, I see what you're saying but the illustration kind of suggests it IS a folded shawl just as she made it.

    Victorian patterns were very vague because they assumed everyone knew how to make the stitches. My mother, ( born in 1918!) could never read a pattern but could look at a picture and recreate it! Looking at it I wonder if it was some sort of shell or Roll stitch that's causing the ripple. The Roll Stitch is an almost forgotten crochet stitch that involves rolling thread around the crochet hook and pulling the stitch through. If you've ever seen a celluloid crochet hook with a fat, rounder bottom than a thin stick, that's what you would use. It made it easier to pull the thread through. It was also very time consuming, very pretty but you needed patience. It was popular on babies caps and clothes. Unfortunately, I no longer have my vintage pattern that contain directions for it. It was basically wrapping thread around the crochet hook loosely enough to pull the last stitch through all the threads and you would get a little fat roll of threads, ( think like a tiny little caterpillar made of wrapped threads) if anyone knows embroidery, you do a similar stich in needlework to get a fat little stitch that curls. As for yarn, it could be anything from a thin wool to a Shetland yarn. Needle sizes were not that important. You would use whatever you had. If my mother would break her crochet hook as a girl , my grandfather would just whittle her a new one in a similar size. Good luck. I just looked up the Roll Stitch and it's being revived under the name bullion stitch.

    • @susankukacarter3107
      @susankukacarter3107 3 місяці тому +4

      Your description of the rolled stitches is very much like the bullion stitch from the Titanic era shawl from last year.

      @maryanncsech6964 Місяць тому +1

      @@donnamarieewing7916 Yes, like the embroidery rose except on a crochet hook and not a needle. I've actually seen someone tape a smaller second crochet hook, a little lower down, onto the needle that the loops go on, to make the loops wide enough to pass the working yarn through all the loops.🙂

    Don’t apologize for having to reference the name and picture. You are most likely crocheting from one of the top ten worst written crochet patterns ever! I myself would have quit after the first sentence. 😂. I am a visual learner. I was able to make simple ripple afghans from written patterns as a teen, after my grandmas showed me the basic stitches. I quit around 1992 until 2007 or so when I caught a tutorial on UA-cam for making some flowers to embellish a dress I was sewing my daughter. I then paused again just to being busy and started making hats last fall. I’m loving creating again and enjoy your videos and your courage to even attempt mystery crochet! ❤from Texas

    The thing that drove me crazy was in the sixth row, it said the second 8-chain should go into the next "corner chain". Not 3-chain! Which would have skipped about five 3-chain loops, I tried it, it looked so wrong. I think you did yourself a favor in not reading that instruction as it was written, Corinna!

    What do you think? I’m thinking the row after you made the 8-chains does not have any 8-chains because you are work a 3-chain “under” the previous row 8-chains to make the “raised”. That’s the concept I have, but i have not as yet settled on the details of how to work successive rows to make increases!

I had NO idea that these patterns were written like this, i thought i had just bitten of more than i should have. Just a few minutes into the video, but I think you're meant to have eight loops, two in each of the four chains - one loop before the * , 2&3 described after the *, then repeat twice, so 4&5 and 6&7, and then complete 8 by making the last dc where you made the first loop

    • @thelibraryismyhappyplace1618
      @thelibraryismyhappyplace1618 3 місяці тому +2

      To add to my earlier comment (now at 21mins in) - you've missed out the 3chain after the 7th loop and before the dc. That would be the 8th loop. The 3chain is part of the repeat

I guess I'll wait and see what happens! 😁 The picture of the shawl was beautiful! I see now, the "increases" were happening. I love shawls, that is one that I would wear for sure. I get SO excited when you put out a new video! I can't wait for the next one! I‘m frustraded at the beginning on the 3 row. I come from germany. It is hard for me to read the pattern 😮

  • @Icequeenrave
    @Icequeenrave 2 місяці тому +1

    In row 7 the 3 chain is supposed to end up behind the 8 chain of the previous row. So after you make the 3d corner you chain 8 and put the sc in the previous rows corners last sc, then chain 3 and put the sc in the next sc. The chain 3 ends up behind the chain 8 from the previous row. It makes a pattern with loops that stand up a bit from the shawl. But this book would have been greatly improved by someone reading it before it was printed. I've gotten to row 8 so far and it starting to look like a shawl, rather than a lopsided square.

If I don't get a chance to do the community pattern in time to send it in I will be sad but I'll still try it. Can I ask you a question about the sunflower shawl? How much (dollar range) would seem fair to sell the finished piece for? I'd probably use RHSS, thinking maybe $100-ish. I'm team snail, but am considering making one or two for this coming autumn. Then I looked at Amazon for ice silk yarn, and the description read 60% ice silk, 10% real silk and 30% mulberry silk. So I think you could use a very fine, soft acrylic yarn and do well.

    After looking at the pattern and the picture.....are we 100% certain it was meant to have 4 corners???? I was screaming at you through the screen that it sounded like a triangular shawl.....and the picture certainly looks like one.... Literally who wrote this book? I'll bet it was just as infuriating the year it was published as it is now....

    That has to be the most irritating pattern ever written. I would have thrown in the towel at the first round.
