Love love love this yarn. Here's the secret: ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!
I strongly agree. I can't comprehend why elise tried to changed her natural tension, that's a nightmare. Instead the pattern has so much adaptations possible : playing with the size of the hook for once, instead of controlling the tension (at least the hook is consistent mindlessly), but also getting rid of many superfluos stitches as needed. no stitch between clusters, just 2 in the corners if necessary, and everybody's good to go.
Passionknit Kelsie was able to do it, but she did a different pattern so it defeated the purpose, lol. So yeah it seems like more work than it's worth, but if you can finally figure out the right patten/tension then I guess it could be useful.
I think it might be a good option if you want to make a multicolor blanket and don't mind when the changes begin but i think i would be frustrated to no end with the figuring out part
What really creams my corn is that each square works differently. All the starting, stopping, frogging, re-doing etc. takes more time than weaving in ends would.
I bought some of this as a new crocheter and didn’t even notice the wrapper said it was for granny squares. All I saw were the great colors. I was about halfway through making a scarf with it when I realized it. The scarf came out great, but I don’t think I’ll make many granny squares with it. I don’t have the patience for all that frogging and redoing. I’d rather weave in ends.
I love the yarn. It only took about 3 squares for me to begin to see a pattern of which rows I had to be a little looser on and which need to be a little tighter. I also switched to my own way of making granny squares and learned what I need to do with my tension with that pattern. I think people should try more than just 1 or 2 squares before they give up on it because once you figure it out what works for each row, you rarely have to frog more than a few stitches and it does end up saving time. The UA-camrs I’ve seen who give it a try with more than just one square also seem to get into a rhythm that works for them. I would encourage anyone who has already bought the yarn to give it a fighting chance with a few squares before giving up.
@@carolgladney9890 frogging was a term I only learned from my knitting instructions. It's from having to rip out multiple rows. Rip-it, ..ribbit ribbit = frog-ing.
I’m totally blind and when I started your video I was super super jealous that I couldn’t see and do something this creative after seeing how frustrated you were you popped my envy bubble thank you lol😅🤍
@ I obviously could not see how frustrated she was but the whole video is her talking about how frustrated she is i’m blind not deaf. I could hear the inflection in her voice. I can understand the narration of what she’s saying. A little common sense goes a long way.💖😇😘❤️😁🙈
Hi Elise, you are invaluable to the Crochet Community. Thank you for your well-organized videos. I have been crocheting for years, yet I keep learning knew crochet ideas from you all the time. We do appreciate your time and your knowledge. Hugsss❤️
This yarn is a great idea in theory but, I agree, too much frogging to get the tension/color change right - it negates the purpose of this yarn to save time. I’m not in love with weaving in ends but I deal with it. Crochet for me is a stress-free activity and I think this yarn would kind of stress me out LOL. Really appreciate your review!
I don't plan to try it myself but I did see someone else's video about this yarn and they also struggled at first like you did. But they decided to make as many granny squares as possible from the yarn and by the end they had learned exactly how to do it to not need to keep frogging. So I think with enough practice it can save time, but getting to that point is a struggle.
Hello. Your tutorial was very informative. First off, I couldn't see to read the pattern, so I used my own, chaining 4 for the ring, 12 dc in first row. 2nd row, 3dc, chain 1 3dc ch 1between each 3 dc for the corners, and it looks like I did the rest of the rows the same as the picture. For my first row, I had to change my hook size from an I to a J and leave a 6 in. tail instead of a 4, and chain 4 instead of 6 for my circle, and still, after 4 tries, the closest I could get to a perfect color change was 1 stitch bleeding into the next color change, so I left it. But amazingly, all the rest of my rows changed colors perfectly.
I used one of these skeins when I was making prototypes of my own octopus pattern, just because I loved the colors. I liked that each of the octopuses were slightly different in the "striping".
There is absolutely no way I would have the patience to crochet granny squares with this yarn. I think sewing in ends would prove to be much faster and less aggravating. Thank you for sharing your experience Elise.
I did the granny square with this yarn and loved it and they say 14 squares that you get out of a skein I got 15 in the skeins that i bought so even more then they say . Love the yarn
There's a way where you connect the new colour to the start of a round with a magic knot,so no ends to weave in, ' play hooky with me' vlogger shows you how
I was one of the testers for this yarn and I too found that the yarn was frustrating. Although the idea sounds great, they fell short in making the Granny Squares easier and faster. There is also a discrepancy in the color lengths from one skein to another across the colors. I agree that it’s great that they have pulled the colors together for you and the feel of the yarn is nice. I actually ended up getting 15 squares out of each skein and I cut the the different colors for each round, for I don’t mind weaving the ends in.
Picked up some of this yarn a few days ago because the ladies in my crochet group were raving about it. I was very skeptical, but I had a blast with it. Took a few tries but once I made a square work the rest were easy. Managed to get it to work with my preferred pattern too (standing dc start, no chain between clusters, ch 1 in corner). I'm incredibly anxious, I thought the eternal yarn chicken would kill me, but shockingly it was very manageable. Additional thoughts: -I used a 6mm hook and my usual tension which is on the tighter side of medium, I never had to frog more than 6 clusters to get a row to work. -I thought that varying tension would look bad but it blocks out. -(For me) the satisfaction of nailing a row outweighs the anxiety of yarn chicken. -While it may be a little more time consuming to re-do a few clusters than weave in ends, I enjoy crocheting more so I'm fine with it. -This yarn is fiddly and frustrating, it's not for everyone. However, I wrote myself off as someone who would hate it and had a lot of fun anyway. It's puzzles! Puzzles fun!
I can see this maybe being useful if you're making a specific project, but for my part I don't like the idea of being completely locked in to someone else's idea of what the thing should look like. I also think the need to finish each round exactly where you're supposed to would be incredibly frustrating. For my part, I simply don't see much advantage to this over other methods for dealing with the ends (my favorite being burying them in subsequent stitches, so you only need to weave in the last one). That said, thank you for the review! I've been curious about this yarn since I heard of it, and now know it's not for me. That's exactly what I came here to find out, and I appreciate the time you took to provide this review for the community!
I only needed to see someone sneak those tails in under the next row of stitches one time. The tail is the only loose end, in my world, too. I use an embroidery needle to hide it in a chain, it pumps that row up nicely.
I've bought this yarn before and the more I used it I got the colors perfectly lined up. By my second square I had them line up beautifully on the first try. So I recommend trying it multiple times and make multiple squares.
I have been using this yarn-I alternate between a 5 and 5.5 hook. My friends think the constant frogging is maddening, but it is much easier for me to bring one skein of yarn for a project than to carry around multiples for color changes
Love all those dfferent bright colors! Some time ago I was beginning to learn how to loom knit a scarf and bought a yarn with a smilar color pattern. One of my co- workers just loved it She was amazed at how the different collors intertwined together. So I gave her the scarf when I finished it and we both felt happy about it. This new yarn is perfect for projects like these
I know how frustrating using this yarn. I experimented with different hooks. I wasn't worried it wouldn't turn out but it was perfect. Then I made a bucket hat. It was awesome. I got so many compliments. The different colors made so many fun projects. I can't get enough of it..
I've seen people add or subtract double crochets to avoid having to redo the entire rounds, which I thought was smart, and it's not that noticeable unless you look super close. I did get a skein for myself to try out and I'm excited about it :D Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
I’ve seen so many people say they hate this yard. Thank you for showing that it can work even though it may be frustrating. Now it makes me want to try it. I’m wondering if you would’ve gone down half size in your hook if that would’ve made a difference. The wind River blanket was gorgeous. I would love to try that one., My name is Lynn my husband user name. Although I’ve tried to teach him how to crochet and I think he would do very well as he is an artist.
It’s all about learning the secret sauce and everyone is different. You have to really be looking ahead. I use a 6.5 for the first two rounds then switch to a 5 mm for the rest
There's definitely a learning curve with this yarn! My first few I had to keep frogging rounds until I figured out what worked for me. I ended up only doing two chains instead of three at the corners (only on the final round) and if I had extra length at the end of any round, I just make slip stitches until I use it up and then start the next round. Since my hook size and tension are consistent, my finished squares are all the same size. My biggest complaint is that the dyeing isn't consistent; as in the amount of each color isn't necessarily the same even within the same skein, much less across dye lots. That's what made me ultimately decide to use my slipstitch technique. It works for me and once I block them all, I'm looking forward to having a fun blanket with minimal ends to deal with!
As much as I hate weaving in ends, no matter what pattern is used, whether traditional granny square or other, if a color change happens at a particular point then with this yarn it all comes down to meeting gauge and having the proper tension. Maybe practice makes this easier to do, but no human will get it right every time. And since Inefficiency makes me insane no matter where it applies, having to potentially work and rework section after section is a deal breaker for me, lol. Enjoy your videos, though, and really appreciate your honesty and integrity in these reviews. See ya next time! Have a great week!
🤔I’m not going to even attempt it! I would get so frustrated that I wouldn’t keep working on the project. That’s more time consuming than weaving in ends. Thanks for your work!
I've been seeing a few YTers talk about this yarn and your demonstration shows me why I will never ever buy it strictly for granny squares! Way too frustrating to try to adjust my lifelong habits so a particular yarn skein will work out. Nuh uh! Thank you for sharing your understandable frustration with it. Edit: I should've watched the whole video because I love what Susan Kennedy made with them. So, so pretty.
I'm happy that you've said that you don't have to make Granny squares with this yarn. I've tried making traditional granny squares and like you I've been frustrated at times, but I just love some of the color combos. I'm gonna try some of your recommendations for project ideas, thanks for the video!
There are so many fun projects besides granny squares you can make with it! I've been thinking about doing a rectangle granny square! It would be fun to see how the color changes looked! 🧶🧶🧶
I have been able to make 15 squares out of one skein of the Soft White Dove. I am making a 7x8 blanket, used 28 pattern squares and 28 solid colored squares for a big blanket for my son. I am 18 weeks pregnant and he is going to have a cozy blanket this fall!
Thank you for showing us this yarn; I wasn’t aware of it yet. We granny-square devotees are a unique and patient bunch. I made an eyeglass case last weekend as a gift and I made four squares. It took me practically all day, and I’m a seasoned granny-square crocheter! It’s definitely the weaving in all the ends of all the different colors. I made a sweater of granny squares using a variegated yarn so that saved a lot of time. I’ll never not love granny squares. ❤ Thank you for your videos. I was so happy to see it this morning first thing, and watch while having my tea and strawberries. Whenever I see a new one from you it’s like a new episode of a favorite show. You are a relatable and cheerful crochet neighbor, Elyse. ❤️🧶🌼🌷
My concerns with this yarn are 2: firstly, you need a long enough tail of white at the end to be able to weave that in, and secondly, how do you sew them together? Does red heart make an identical yarn that is the same color as the last rows of all the color ways?
I've been crocheting granny squares for years and was excited to try this yarn. I got the Aran cream as was my favorite of what they had. I didn't like it. It took several times to work it out to get the color changes close. I had to tighten for the first two colors and loosen for the rest. Each square I did I had to frog some to adjust. None were perfectly aligned. I did get 15 squares when it said I'd get 14. I didn't like how loose the squares were, I like my squares tighter. With the frustration of making the squares and the limitations to the size and color pattern, and the cost of the yarn compared to just solid colors, it's just quicker and easier to create the colors and sizes I like and crocheting over my ends makes less work.
I did so much experimenting with this yarn it drove me bonkers. Finally I found out the most convoluted way to get it right for me and my tension habits. R1: 6mm hook and loosey goosey tension R2: same as R1 R3: 6mm hook and ever so slightly loose tension R4: 6mm hook and normal tension R5: 5.5mm hook and tight tension to give me enough of a tail to weave in (so weird!) And if I ever do have a tiny bit of extra color I’ll just add extra slip stitches up my chain when I’m finishing the last corner of the row to use up the extra. You can’t tell once you layer the next row of clusters over the chain space. Seems really goofy to go through that much to get it right but damn if it isn’t super satisfying when you do and it goes so fast once you get there.
Like you, I love Granny Squares so I wanted to try this yarn. I found that the first round needed to be loose, so I crocheted it with a 7mm hook. I used a 6.5mm hook for round 2, and slightly tighter tension. Round 3, 6mm hook with about the same tension as last round. Round 4: 5mm hook with the same tension. The last round, 4mm hook, and maybe a slightly tighter tension than the last 3 rounds. I came out with only a few frogging requirements for correct color change placement. I rather enjoyed to challenge of the yarn. It helped me understand tension requirements for projects and I sure got that practice.
The look on your face!!! I trust you to give an honest review, I've learned all I know about crochet from you! Love all the colorways and as for a color bleeding into another round it adds to the quirkiness that is me.
Making granny squares with colour changes every row atm and I only have to weave in two ends because I picked up a tip from b.hooked: Magic knots! Yes you'll have to do the knot every round and you maybe need to fumble around the last stitch a little bit to hide the little knot in the dc or on the back of the granny square (I'll use them for a lined bag so the back is completely irrelevant), but it's fast, I have two weave in two ends per square instead of 10+ and it's keeping me sane!
I love it! I finished 1 blanket for my Mom's birthday in January and a 13 square tote for Mother's Day. I'm almost finished with a 59 hexagon blanket using the soft white-pink punch colorway. I did have to go up hook sizes. They recommend a 5.5mm, but I went to an 8mm. Otherwise, the tension had to be soo loose to finish a round right at the color transition.
Great video! I wouldn’t necessarily use this for Granny squares as I don’t mind weaving in the ends but where I think the value lies is in not having to buy, or store so many different colors of yarn, especially when you want to have an on-the-go project. I love to crochet in doctor’s waiting rooms, etc, and hauling 5+ balls of yarn with me is inconvenient to say the least. So I plan to get some and make one of the projects that doesn’t require color changes at an exact spot. I think it would be brilliant for that purpose. Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us.
It's a good concept but ain't nobody got time for that. I could have just sewn in my ends by now 😂 I'm not the biggest fan of grannies in the first place. I could see this being a cool idea but there are just too many variables because we're all so unique in how we crochet. Thanks for taking one for the team 😊
Mikey on Crochet Crowd has done it. Quite a few other crocheters have done it too. Me, I made a hat and scarf with it for my cousin and it came out positively beautiful with the way the colors pooled together. That's one of my super powers: I can get just about any yarn or thread to pool without even trying.🥰
Yes, I have tried it, however, before I used the yarn, I watched the Crochet Crowd make a square and his suggestion of keeping a couple of different hooks available was invaluable. I agree, the colors are great but I don't think I will make granny squares from it. One of my crochet friends is crocheting a Slanted Shells Scarf with this yarn and it is quite lovely! 🤣
There is no way I could use this yarn!!! Frogging that much work would have me in tears.. I've only been crocheting for just over a week at this point and haven't made a granny square but I think I'd rather just change the color myself and weave in all the ends!
Thank you for actually reading and following the pattern that came with the yarn. I saw countless Gen Z crocheters not use the pattern and then whine that the yarn was bad. I liken them to the people who change key parts of a recipe, then review it saying it sucks. I appreciate all the effort you put into making this work!
I love this yarn. I get 15 squares from each skein. I go down a size in hook and have to vary my tension based on how close I am to the color change. I also need to leave an 8 inch tail.
It took me a couple squares to know how to use this yarn with my tension, but for me I found that I had to tighten up the last two rounds every time. I used a 6mm hook for the first three and swapped to a 5.5 for the last two while trying to actively tighten my tension. The color changes are still not always perfect but I find that sometimes it adds a bit of character to the squares, if that makes sense. If you look closely on the squares of the yarn label you can see that theirs aren’t perfect either. To me if the color change isn’t drastic (from a dark color to a light color for example) I don’t think it looks bad if a stitch is off and I leave it. I dislike weaving ends so much that I don’t even bother making normal squares frequently but for me I find that the yarn is worth it if you can get used to it.
I tried it today. I assumed I wouldn’t be able to do it as I watched so many videos about this, 90% of them were thumbs down, I’m not an advanced crocheter, and following a pattern is not my forte. I do crochet to tutorial only. Reading a pattern is torture. 🤣 So this was a bit out of my wheel house. I will say that many felt they needed to change the directions to get it to work. I was determined to follow the directions exactly, so if it didn’t work for me, that wouldn’t be why. I found that the ones that could get it to work in the videos I watched found it easier the more squares they made. And I know one girl was just blowing through these granny like nobody’s business & got 15 squares out of each skein. It did work for me. I was stunned. I had to adjust and fiddle here and there, but it worked. That said, what I didn’t like was the way they do their granny squares and the 6 chain starting corner. I felt that seemed messy. I don’t do GS’s like that. Also the integrity of the yarn wasn’t uniform. The white on mine (soft amethyst) seemed dirty or over stained from other darker colors & weight of the yarn didn’t seem uniform color to color. 🤷🏻♀️ Otherwise I’d use it for sure. Changing colors is highly unenjoyable for me !😂 It was fun once I got the kinks out.
Crochet is supposed to be relaxing instead of so much angst. Some of the colors have a dot of a color on it from one of the others. Thus the reason why I use the granny square yarn for scarves and hats . The best stitch is C2C, C2C moss and granny spike stitch. The color patterns are so pretty. I became obsessed with them and have all 18 colors. I hope they add more! 😄
❤ Well that sucks the joy out of crocheting granny squares in different colours, doesn’t it. Lol. I am so glad I enjoy weaving in ends and that I saw this video in case I decided to get lazy. Vote with your money! All the best, Joyce
I bought RHGS not to make the granny squares, but just to pick a pattern and let the colors fall where they may. I've done 2 blankets so far, and the one turned out really well. I don't have the patience to keep tearing the square apart and keep re-doing it. My hubby found 40 skeins of RHGS on clearance for $4.00 each at Walmart and bought them for me. I'm so lucky that he's my yarn enabler!!!!LOL!!!!
I think I'd prefer to spend time weaving ends in rather than repeatedly frogging to get the colors to end where they're supposed to. Weaving ends in feels like forward progress at least lol.
I would work the first round over the beginning end and leave a long end for sewing blocks together. But I think I would try one of the non Granny ones that the other gal made. I like those.
I had commented the other day.. I started to make squares and I found using a 9mm hook works pretty well!! I've had to frog a few rounds but overall it works well!!
Hi Elise! I love your show! I FINALLY was able to find this yarn and I raced home to get started. After frogging the third round partway twice, I decided to go down a size in my hook (5.0 mm). That worked! So then I had issues with rounds four and five running out of yarn too soon with my original size hook (5.5 mm). So, I decided to do this... I began with 5.5 mm for rounds one and two. I finished the square with rounds three, four, and five using a 5.0 mm. I had to stay consistent with my tension, but it worked out! Good luck everyone! I think this yarn is worth it. The first square is where you get it all figured out. After that, you will be zooming through squares! Bye!
Elise, I'm glad you are showcasing this yarn! I appreciate you showing the channel that has all the variations of "squares" to make with this yarn. Its fun and has some great color ways. Im currently working up 6 skeins of it for a project, the color Carnation Code is my favorite so far. I hope this video gets some nay sayers to give it a try at least. The amount of "hate" this yarn gets is wild imo ✨✌️
I love Pretty Peaceful and Susan Kennedys book. I got it on Amazon last year and her videos on UA-cam are the best. I've made several projects from her book and highly recommend. She's also pretty active on FB and is super encouraging to her subscribers!!
This process reminds me of planned pooling! I do love planned pooling because you get those cool color changes without the ends to weave in, but it does take a lot of experimentation too. I enjoy that part of the process though, it feels like a puzzle :) If anything, I think you've sold me on this yarn 😂
I have made 2 blankets using this yarn and it worked up fine for me . If the yarn is not working for you go up a hook size or down because it’s not the yarn it is your tension! I got 15 squares out of the 4 different colors.
Valiant effort Elise👏 but 67% less time weaving in ends, 367 % more time making a granny square 😮. I haven't seen a single person make these work out the first few times. Yeah, a Hallowe'en costume for that granny square dress, cuz it looks like a sofa.😅
Hi Elise , great review! I tried this yarn. What works for me is to pull out the color for each round until the transition point, and “guesstimate “ how much of the pulled color , I have left as I get closer to the end of the round. It’s the same concept as planned pooling or playing yarn chicken 😂
Life is too short! And that yarn is too expensive to not work right. I like using color changing yarns for my grannies, like in my avatar. I don't have to have every round be a different color! My favorite granny afghan I ever made was with Bernat Mosiac. I loved the colors in that yarn. Shouldn't you have 4 inches of the white left over to weave in?
Thank you for taking this hit for the team. I don't have the patience for this yarn, I'll continue to use scraps for grannies. I work over the ends on each row, so no biggy.
This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time I watched this video. It probably took 10 times longer to crochet and frog, frog, frog, than it would have taken to weave in multiple ends. And I actually enjoy weaving in ends.
Thanks for reviewing and having the patience to try this yarn. When I first saw it I thought it was just a gimmick and would go the way of the O’go yarn- that has yet to be proven. I might try it if it’s on clearance for a blanket, but the frustration of frogging granny squares far out weighs sewing in ends. Thanks again I really enjoy your channel!
Love red heart yarn but I’d never work a granny square like this ! Be nice for blankets or as we used to say Afghans ! I learned to knit at age 4 but for some reason I could not get the hang of crochet ! I was 23 just had a baby girl I went to night classes to learn crochet! I was thrilled and sat up way past my bedtime crocheting granny square pink blanket ! I was so afraid I’d forget ! I mostly did Afghans after that! But now so many gorgeous granny squares I need to try ! I actually did better with thread crochet ! But arthritis is hard on hands and yarn is loser for me! Thanks for the great video !
I feel that it is IMPOSSIBLE to call this yarn Granny Square due to the fact that every crocheter uses different weight yarn & different size hooks & different amounts of tension
Hi Elise. Thanks for the demo. The comments here have been very helpful. I have seen other creators use this yarn for other projects. I think this is going to be a good yarn for multi-colored projects. I like some of the color options
I'm not going anywhere NEAR this yarn if I'm to use it the way it was intended! It's like a constant state of "yarn chicken" with EVERY round! The colours however are amazing and would easily use this yarn to create a unique blanket, stole or shawl, or even a scarf! I'm flexible and can let my creative crochet flag fly!
Love you a lot. You're just so bubbly and you help lighten my day. About the granny squares, I had to change hooks on each square according to my tension. One round maybe a H and then another round an I or J. Maybe it will help you. Janet
You have to work with it but it works. Your tension and hook size will have to be adjusted. Just like any project you do. You also need to make sure you need to make sure your first color is all there. I used the one with orange, gold, maroon and oranges in a waffle stitch started from middle by fiber spider. I used the pink, blue, maroon, white in a c2c moss stitch by hooked by Robin and I love how they are working up.
I actually love this yarn! It takes a little practice but totally worth it! I use a 7.0mm and only put 2 chain stitches in the corners! The price point is not my favorite though.
I felt, when I first heard about this yarn, that it wouldn't be worth the frustration of repeatedly frogging and restitching the same length of yarn. After watching your otherwise lovely video, I realized I was right. I'd much rather spend a little time weaving in ends and not essentially crocheting the same project twice (stitch it, frog it, restitch it . . . ). Thank you for all your wonderful videos! I'm not an amigurumi gal, but I still learn a lot from every video you produce.
I was so so excited about this yarn.. just to get frustrated with having to frog back and restart time and time again. I got the first round... And that's it. Definitely need to look into other projects with it though! I got the frigid and LOVE the colors and the feel and thickness of the yarn so I definitely need to use it vfor something fun!
I am not going to try this one. But, I am already a big fan of your episode sponsor. I can recommend Blueland products. I tried them for them being zero waste, and love their quality.
I really like it. It did take me a few tries to get my tension correct, but once I did, I was on my way. I did go down to a 4mm hook. I usually use a 5.😊 happy crocheting..❤
Love the idea; also love the colorways. I often switch hooks while crocheting because I have problems crocheting evenly so I would use this yarn for making colorful beanies.
I am laughing so hard at this video! IN A GOOD WAY! My sister just messaged me about granny squares and I wanted to find her a video with this specific yarn. Every time I fast forward I hear another exasperated sound from you and it couldn’t match my energy crocheting any better! I can’t wait to watch your other videos! Thank you for being realistic and just down right funny😊
Thanks so much for this video, Elise! I purchased 4 skeins of Black Cyber Leaf and finally sat down and played with it a couple days ago… JUST SHOOT ME. Loved your recommendation for Susan Kennedy’s Crochet Southwest Spirit book and snagged a copy so I can make her Wind River blanket. 🩵🧶🩵
I have not tried this yarn, yet...I'm not sure I will because I am avoiding Granny Squares. The reasons are not important. However, several years ago, they put out a pattern yarn for making socks. It was light weight and a picture of the pattern was on the lable. I used it to make doll size sweaters. The irregular color change created wonderful looking sweaters...I might get this to do a blanket.
Oh my gosh! I bought Susan Kennedy book last weekend for the market basket. I LOVE that book of hers. But I think she does amazing blankets! I am amazed that she figured out those blanket patterns with this yarn!
I like using the same colors but in different orders, and this yarn locks you into the same color placement. I made a Christmas tree skirt that was various combinations of red, white, and green, some with white centers and some with red. I couldn't have done something similar with these.
Yes! Yes!! YESSS!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It worked out the same way for me. ❤ This yarn!
This is what I would do. You really thought it through. Thank you for letting us know. I hate frogging but I hate mistakes more.
Oooo.....thank you !! 🎉
I might try it work these instructions.
I have not seen a single vlogger be able to get the colour changes consistently on point. Frogging this much would drive me insane!!
I was definitely frustrated!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Passionknit Kelsie was able to do it, but she did a different pattern so it defeated the purpose, lol. So yeah it seems like more work than it's worth, but if you can finally figure out the right patten/tension then I guess it could be useful.
Seem more like a puzzle than a craft. 😅
It’s funny, as a complete beginner, I enjoy the challenge and can nail it almost every time. I’m guessing it’s because I’m slow. It’s been super fun!
@@BeMandy I've only been crocheting for 2 months and every video I've watched has only scared me more. 😆
I tried the granny square yarn and decided it is a whole lot easier just to weave in my ends. However, love this yarn for the moss stitch.
That's exactly my thoughts too! 🧶🧶🧶
I think it might be a good option if you want to make a multicolor blanket and don't mind when the changes begin but i think i would be frustrated to no end with the figuring out part
Good to know... I have 8 skeins 2 colors... So now i know what i can do with it
Oh, I hadn't thought of that! Now I have to go buy some of this stuff so I can try it.
Thank you for the suggestion. I think the colors on this yarn are beautiful & now I know how to use it. Thank you 🥰
What really creams my corn is that each square works differently. All the starting, stopping, frogging, re-doing etc. takes more time than weaving in ends would.
Oh my goodness!!! That is going to be my new favorite saying!!!!!!! 🌽🌽🌽
I wonder how it would work for color pooling?
@@EliseRoseCrochet that really creams my corn...😅😊🎉😊😅😂😂❤ me too
😅 "creams my corn" I love it 🌽💚💛 you made my day 😂 thank you
Agree!!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Please tell me you have an instagram so we can see how it turned out
I love the yarn.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I had to go up on the hook size and it worked perfect!
I have never heard the expression you used, but I love it! Adding it to my long list, lol❤
Lol!! Nothing to be envious about! 🧶🧶🧶
How did u see how frustrated she was if ur blind ?🤔🤨🕵♀️
@ I obviously could not see how frustrated she was but the whole video is her talking about how frustrated she is i’m blind not deaf. I could hear the inflection in her voice. I can understand the narration of what she’s saying. A little common sense goes a long way.💖😇😘❤️😁🙈
Hi Elise, you are invaluable to the Crochet Community. Thank you for your well-organized videos. I have been crocheting for years, yet I keep learning knew crochet ideas from you all the time. We do appreciate your time and your knowledge.
Hugsss❤️
Thank you so very much! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet Elise, I know that I speak for many. It’s just that some forget to message you. Please keep up the fine work.❤️
This yarn is a great idea in theory but, I agree, too much frogging to get the tension/color change right - it negates the purpose of this yarn to save time. I’m not in love with weaving in ends but I deal with it. Crochet for me is a stress-free activity and I think this yarn would kind of stress me out LOL. Really appreciate your review!
That's how I felt..... stressed! 😅
That's good to know! I think my tension varies too much for it to be consistent all the time! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet Excellent point
Exactly what happens when you're tryng to make amigurumi stuffed animals
Oh fun!! 🐙
There is absolutely no way I would have the patience to crochet granny squares with this yarn. I think sewing in ends would prove to be much faster and less aggravating. Thank you for sharing your experience Elise.
That's how I feel as well! 🧶🧶🧶
I did the granny square with this yarn and loved it and they say 14 squares that you get out of a skein I got 15 in the skeins that i bought so even more then they say . Love the yarn
What ends?? Isn't it one continuous yarn, and do you have to hand sew or use a machine. I would have given this yarn to the op shop long ago, man!
Ya but she's sponsored so she doesn't care lol
Wow!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!! 🧶🧶🧶
I don’t do granny squares but I love these yarns for stuff animals. It makes them so colorful.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Additional thoughts:
-I used a 6mm hook and my usual tension which is on the tighter side of medium, I never had to frog more than 6 clusters to get a row to work.
Thanks for sharing your tips and experience! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you! I think this yarn would be great for other projects, but I wouldn't use it for granny squares! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
You're good! 😊
Omg I love it when pickle makes an appearance
Haha!! He's been a little camera shy lately! 🧶🧶🧶
I have been using this yarn-I alternate between a 5 and 5.5 hook. My friends think the constant frogging is maddening, but it is much easier for me to bring one skein of yarn for a project than to carry around multiples for color changes
That's very true! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
This new yarn is perfect for projects like these
That's wonderful! 🧶🧶🧶
I know how frustrating using this yarn. I experimented with different hooks. I wasn't worried it wouldn't turn out but it was perfect. Then I made a bucket hat. It was awesome. I got so many compliments. The different colors made so many fun projects. I can't get enough of it..
That's wonderful!! 🧶🧶🧶
I've seen people add or subtract double crochets to avoid having to redo the entire rounds, which I thought was smart, and it's not that noticeable unless you look super close. I did get a skein for myself to try out and I'm excited about it :D Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
Thank you for sharing that tip!! 🧶🧶🧶
I do that when knitting amigurumis but sometimes they turn out crooked 😂
I totally agree - a few weaved in ends vs constant frogging. Need to browse thru their patterns to see what projects may be of interest.
That's exactly how I felt! 🧶🧶🧶
I made a C2C blanket with this yarn…it turned out 👍🏻 great!
Great idea!! 🧶🧶🧶
Corner to corner granny? I was thinking of trying this with entrelac.
I actually was thinking of that! Now I'll have to try it! ❤
It would be interesting to know if it would work with a smaller crochet hook! 🧶🧶🧶
It’s all about learning the secret sauce and everyone is different. You have to really be looking ahead. I use a 6.5 for the first two rounds then switch to a 5 mm for the rest
Thanks so much for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you so much for sharing your tips!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
🤔I’m not going to even attempt it! I would get so frustrated that I wouldn’t keep working on the project. That’s more time consuming than weaving in ends. Thanks for your work!
That's the conclusion I came to! 🧶🧶🧶
Bought some of these skeins but not using them for their stated purpose..I'll be making color block scarves and winter hats out of them.
Right?!?! That blanket is gorgeous!! 🧶🧶🧶
How patient you are! Unravelling is my personal nemesis!
Congratulations!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Awww! Thank you so much!!! I will never not love granny squares either! 🧶🧶🧶
P.S. I’m sorry I spelled your name incorrectly. Also, I’d rather weave in ends than do all that frogging - again, thank you!
My concerns with this yarn are 2: firstly, you need a long enough tail of white at the end to be able to weave that in, and secondly, how do you sew them together? Does red heart make an identical yarn that is the same color as the last rows of all the color ways?
That's a very good point! 🧶🧶🧶
You are very patient. I won't be using this yarn ever. I would have been done a long time ago.❤
Haha! I am stubborn enough to make it work! 🤣🤣🤣
I felt the same way. Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I like that you showed alternative uses for this yarn, some of those are stunning! (The Water Wind blanket, OMG) Thanks Elise, love your videos!❤
Yes! The River Wind blanket is incredible! 🧶🧶🧶
I loved this yarn, I found the changing of tension as a fun challenge. I was able to finish my granny square bag quickly thanks to this yarn
I'm so glad it worked well for you! 🧶🧶🧶
I did so much experimenting with this yarn it drove me bonkers. Finally I found out the most convoluted way to get it right for me and my tension habits.
R1: 6mm hook and loosey goosey tension
R2: same as R1
R3: 6mm hook and ever so slightly loose tension
R4: 6mm hook and normal tension
R5: 5.5mm hook and tight tension to give me enough of a tail to weave in (so weird!)
And if I ever do have a tiny bit of extra color I’ll just add extra slip stitches up my chain when I’m finishing the last corner of the row to use up the extra. You can’t tell once you layer the next row of clusters over the chain space.
Seems really goofy to go through that much to get it right but damn if it isn’t super satisfying when you do and it goes so fast once you get there.
Wow!!!! That's amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️
This was so helpful! It worked! ❤
I also for the fun of it measured length of each color...
The look on your face!!! I trust you to give an honest review, I've learned all I know about crochet from you! Love all the colorways and as for a color bleeding into another round it adds to the quirkiness that is me.
It would drive me nuts not to have the color change in the right spot. 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
That's a very good point! 🧶🧶🧶
That's how I felt, it didn't save me any actual time! 🧶🧶🧶
That's awesome!! 👏
Oh! That's a good tip! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing your tips! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing how it works for you!!🧶🧶🧶
I tried it today.
Otherwise I’d use it for sure. Changing colors is highly unenjoyable for me !😂
It was fun once I got the kinks out.
That's awesome!!! 👏 thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for the info! 🧶🧶🧶
❤ Well that sucks the joy out of crocheting granny squares in different colours, doesn’t it. Lol. I am so glad I enjoy weaving in ends and that I saw this video in case I decided to get lazy. Vote with your money! All the best, Joyce
6:30 Howdy Pickle!!😂 He’s helping 😂
🤣🤣🤣
I bought RHGS not to make the granny squares, but just to pick a pattern and let the colors fall where they may. I've done 2 blankets so far, and the one turned out really well. I don't have the patience to keep tearing the square apart and keep re-doing it. My hubby found 40 skeins of RHGS on clearance for $4.00 each at Walmart and bought them for me. I'm so lucky that he's my yarn enabler!!!!LOL!!!!
So glad some one did something other than granny squares
Yes! After I filmed the video I realized it would make a great yarn to make a granny rectangle blanket with! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you! Great info. I was sitting here looking at the 2 balls I bought. After watching, I think I will use the yarn for a different project.
Glad it was helpful! 🧶🧶🧶
I recently made a pair of pants with this yarn. They came out really nice. They actually make 15 granny squares.
Oh how fun!! 🧶🧶🧶
I bought this yarn and used an 4.0 mm hook. I got 20 squares and actually, I didn't try making the changes because, I love how it looks as it changes.
I think I'd prefer to spend time weaving ends in rather than repeatedly frogging to get the colors to end where they're supposed to. Weaving ends in feels like forward progress at least lol.
That's how I feel as well! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so glad!! Thanks for coming back and sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm really glad I've watched that video before buying the yarn. being off and frog it would drive me insane 😅
It was making me a little cuckoo! 😜
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I wouldn't use it for traditional granny squares but I can see a lot of other options for it! 🧶🧶🧶
It took me a bit of time (& frogging), but so glad I stayed with it!! The squares are so quick to make.. I love this yarn!! ❤❤❤
That's awesome!! There are some others who have shared how they figured it out and shared it in the comments! 🧶🧶🧶
I agree with you completely. I'd rather weave the ends. I am interested in trying to see how the long color changes work in other patterns.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I tried to make a granny square cardigan once, got fed up, and long story shirt, my cats love their new mini-blanket.
Lol!!! You made lemonade from lemons! 🍋
hey at least you still found a use lol
I have made 2 blankets using this yarn and it worked up fine for me . If the yarn is not working for you go up a hook size or down because it’s not the yarn it is your tension! I got 15 squares out of the 4 different colors.
Valiant effort Elise👏 but 67% less time weaving in ends, 367 % more time making a granny square 😮. I haven't seen a single person make these work out the first few times.
Yeah, a Hallowe'en costume for that granny square dress, cuz it looks like a sofa.😅
Haha!!!! I'm going to need to make that dress! 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Elise , great review! I tried this yarn. What works for me is to pull out the color for each round until the transition point, and “guesstimate “ how much of the pulled color , I have left as I get closer to the end of the round.
It’s the same concept as planned pooling or playing yarn chicken 😂
Thanks for the tip!! 🧶🧶🧶
It may have had a tail of white and realized that after I published the video! 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for taking this hit for the team. I don't have the patience for this yarn, I'll continue to use scraps for grannies.
I work over the ends on each row, so no biggy.
Me personally, I can weave in the ends quicker than frogging and redoing row after row to get it right
This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time I watched this video. It probably took 10 times longer to crochet and frog, frog, frog, than it would have taken to weave in multiple ends. And I actually enjoy weaving in ends.
That's how I feel too! 🧶🧶🧶
Glad it was helpful! 🧶🧶🧶
This way to do granny squares looks extra stressful.
Frrrrrr lol😅
Oh wow can't imagine thread crochet!!! 🧶🧶🧶🧶
I feel that it is IMPOSSIBLE to call this yarn Granny Square due to the fact that every crocheter uses different weight yarn & different size hooks & different amounts of tension
Good point! 🧶🧶🧶
I taught myself how to crochet. I love this yarn and the pattern for it is great! With correct tension and hook size it’s perfect each time ❤
I'm so glad it works well for you!! 🧶🧶🧶
It takes FAR less time to do a quick weave in of ends as I go ... than a constant losing game of yarn chicken !! I detest yarn chicken !!!
Haha!! 🧶🐓
Hi Elise. Thanks for the demo. The comments here have been very helpful. I have seen other creators use this yarn for other projects. I think this is going to be a good yarn for multi-colored projects. I like some of the color options
I am using the yarn for a different project and it feels really nice working with it! 🧶🧶🧶
The colors are kinda ugly, and redoing sections is a pain. I'll stick with traditional method and just wave in my ends!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Janet
Thank you for sharing that tip!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I actually love this yarn! It takes a little practice but totally worth it! I use a 7.0mm and only put 2 chain stitches in the corners! The price point is not my favorite though.
Thanks for sharing your tips! 🧶🧶🧶
It is a nice yarn! I had such high hopes! 🧶🧶🧶
I am not going to try this one. But, I am already a big fan of your episode sponsor. I can recommend Blueland products. I tried them for them being zero waste, and love their quality.
I love Blueland too!! I'm obsessed with the toilet cleaner tabs!! 🚽
I really like it. It did take me a few tries to get my tension correct, but once I did, I was on my way. I did go down to a 4mm hook. I usually use a 5.😊 happy crocheting..❤
Awesome! 👏 Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Love the idea; also love the colorways. I often switch hooks while crocheting because I have problems crocheting evenly so I would use this yarn for making colorful beanies.
It would make great beanies! 🧶🧶🧶
Lol! It really is frustrating!! The Wind River blanket is stunning!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh my gosh! I bought Susan Kennedy book last weekend for the market basket. I LOVE that book of hers. But I think she does amazing blankets! I am amazed that she figured out those blanket patterns with this yarn!
Yes!!! Her designs are incredible! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you for your response To this yarn I think I'm going to tie and weave in my tails on granny square s 😘
I like using the same colors but in different orders, and this yarn locks you into the same color placement. I made a Christmas tree skirt that was various combinations of red, white, and green, some with white centers and some with red. I couldn't have done something similar with these.
Me too!! 🧶🧶🧶
