    This is exactly what my garage door was doing intermittently. A few times over the years I had lubed the tracks. I checked all ten boxes and the only thing I found wrong was dirty tracks. Couple of shop towels and some paint thinner later, the door seems to be operating as designed. Thanks for a great video.

    And reason #11 is that the springs on top of the door are weak, worn, or not doing their job any more, i had problem's with the door going half way a quarter way same as your example. after a while one of the springs broke and it got worse i had to really look for the problem and it was because the spring broke. changed both spring and all was well. Note. older springs? might have been wearing out or not piking up enough of the door weight

    Fantastic. thank you. so it's starting to get a little colder now and our issue was garage open force. Just upped that slightly and the issue was resolved. Didn't know that was even a thing. Wondering why it wouldn't be 100% all the time but easy fix. thanks.

    • @boots7859
      @boots7859 Місяць тому +1

      Thats because the springs are generating most of the lift, and the opener is usually adjusted to apply just enough additional force to open/close.
      Winter causes the springs to see their stiffness increase and flexibility decrease.
      So what was nicely balanced in Spring, Summer, Fall is now just shy of being able to open/close and must have some additional power supplied by the motor.

  • @boots7859
    @boots7859 Місяць тому +2

    Nice vid. One thing to help cut the troubleshooting time down is to pull the cord the disconnects the door from the chain. If your chain is still stopping before fully opening, then you can reasonably rule out the door, roller/bearings, etc.
    One of mine is doing that, and while I have to go out and check the IR, I think they are good. Didn't hear any squealing before hand, so I don't think its the pulley or drive.
    Another video mentioned adjusting the limit switches if you can, most models you can't without a service manual.

  • @explorepikespeak

    Should be a number 0 with an explicit note that if its gotten colder/winter and this has happened out of the blue then its most likely springs losing some flexibility and becoming just a bit stiffer. Adjusting UP/DOWN force is most likely going to solve the issue unless your springs are also 10-15 years old and those adjustments were already maxxed out. HD is $20 for 2 springs, and with the door open all it takes is a wrench/socket and about 10-15 min's. Springs are un-tensioned when door is open, so very safe. Just insure you run a wire rope, or even just rope inside each spring when adding the new ones which will keep breaking springs from putting an eye out or worse.

    This happens a few times a year with my Wayne-Dalton garage door. The very first thing I try and (so far) always works is unplugging the power cable attached to the ceiling of the opener control motor, wait 10 seconds, and re-attaching (as you said in the video as #7). I guess that's why Wayne-Dalton does not make opener control motors anymore...

      It might be, however when I've had that its usually temp solved by simply keeping the button pressed. When that happens, I've usually solved it by just unpowering it, pulling the button box apart and cleaning contacts with alcohol. Never had to retighten a connector, but its possible.

    I got two more for you: 1) The brackets holding the rail against the wall of the garage. If they get loose then when the garage opens (especially the bottom one) it can shake them and cause the sensors to trigger. 2) (which was my issue) There is an adjustable bolt that connects the center rail wire (attached to the chain), there is a pinch piece to hold the wire in place. The excess wire from the pinched piece hung down too far and caught the center rail shaft piece as it moved back towards the main unit. Easier to show then describe but any resistance on the main shaft piece that moves will cause the door to stop.

    I had the cable caught under the emergency release pull mechanism. It slid along the cable until it hit the chain part attached to the cable. I just had to push the cable out from under the release mechanism that slides along the center track. I then tightened the tension in the chain so that it wasn't sagging below the rail, which is probably why it got caught.

    Heres one that I didnt know, is sunlight can affect those sensors for closing. I had one door, but no the other, that wouldnt close during certain times of the day in the summer. Depending on the angle of the sun and time of day, it would think the sensor detected someone tripping it. Was very random. I probably spend a half an hour spring and then fall adjusting my garage doors. Lubricate rollers, check that all nuts, etc are tight, and lube and tighten the chain if needed and clean any gunk I see. Never have garage door issues.

    • @HeyMikeyLikesIt2
      @HeyMikeyLikesIt2 3 місяці тому

      I figured it out….. the garage door would go up about 6 inches and stop. Nothing was wrong with the sensors. The garage door was not installed correctly, there has been some cricking and cracking like it has rusty metal but doesn’t. It was just binding so bad that the friction caused it to stop….. I lubed everything, and physically helped it up after pressing the button, I felt that binding fraction area, it went up and down after helping it. I lubed it even more while it was going up and down…. It needs an adjustment. The house is two years old. I believe the garage door not being properly adjusted during installation and the house settling is causing some friction areas. When the garage door is closed I see some daylight coming through the bottom corner. I’m sure it’s off a bit.
