GENIUS OF TOOL: UNDERTOW | THE MAKING OF
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 січ 2020
- TOOL is one of the biggest names in "guitar world"! This L.A. based 4 piece influenced 2 generations of musicians and continues to break ground to this day 30 years later after their establishment. Fan favourites "LATERALUS" and "AENIMA" are often talked about and are regarded as TOOL's finest work... which leaves their debut "UNDERTOW" in their shadows. However a lot of thought and work went into the production of this album... some of the facts are well known and some are obscure. It's always fascinating to see and hear any artist's early work, as it's easier to relate to... as it's before all the success... early work is written without any knowledge of what the fate of produced work will be. Will it succeed or will it fail? So in this rockumentary we will be having a look at how TOOL dealt with L.A. metal scene of early 90's and what separated them from grunge and pretty much everyone else from day 1! We will also have a look at the technical side of the production of this effort for which we should thank Sylvia Massy! I hope you will enjoy this ride as much as I did! I call this "GENIUS OF TOOL: UNDERTOW"

BRAVO man! Good job, that was an excellent recap of a great album. You're editing skills are professional dude, super engaging film!
A FILM! YESSS!!! That's what I like to hear! I am glad that my effort and intentions come through! I really appreciate the positive feedback and support! Thank you very much!
@@saysthemanbehindthemask hey man I see your talent and your work ethic - keep it up and keep being creative dude!
Thank you! I will do my best!
My first concert was TOOL opening for Primus new year 95....that experience has yet to be topped..the 90s ruled..I think Danny is opening portals with some kind of technomancy or something.
Damn! You are lucky indeed!
I love new TOOL concerts, they're truly incredible, but nothing will ever beat the energy of those old shows.
Sounds like a dream combo.
This is better than Game of Thrones
Holy shit! One hell of a compliment! Thank you very much I really appreciate that! 🤧🙏🙌
@@saysthemanbehindthemask if he meant the least season than it’s not much of compliment I’m afraid lol
But it’s a fantastic video!
I need a video like this for each album. Great job man! Already shared with my fellow Tool fans.
Awesome, thank you! And that is the plan to cover every album by TOOL as they are my favourite band and their discography is not that large so it's manageable. However this kind of production is very time consuming, this UNDERTOW video took me 5 months to complete. AENIMA is up next!
@@saysthemanbehindthemask "And that is the plan to cover every album by TOOL" - DUDE I FUCKING LOVE YOU AND THE FACT THAT I FOUND YOU RIGHT NOW! Please never stop creating stuff! You are a fucking artist in this
Greetings If you happen to be here! A lot of work went into this! Hopefully it will come through!
Leave your thoughts below!
Awesome work... thanks 🙏
@@50NewEyes Thank you very much! I appreciate the positive feedback!
I had (have) to "advantage" to be open so it certainly came through. No doubt a lot of work went into it - the result speaks for itself. Thanks for mentioning, no... giving Sylvia Massy the attention she deserves (I think a lot of people were and are not aware of her role and influence let alone the hard work she did in the Tool dimension - by lack or insufficiency of lack of what non-poetic language has to offer). Thank you so much. I will keep trying to give this documentary more attention with my humble means. Tool could be a tool 😉 !
You deserve to be paid extremely well for this level of documentary
Well thank you! I wish I could but I didn’t get a penny for this… I didn’t monetise this video since I was worried it may get a copyright strike or something due to using some original material even though all the music is not original… I didn’t but better safe than sorry since I can’t afford to get this one blocked as it took 5 months to make
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Make more of these and monetize them. You will go extremely far.
I have been trying this approach for a while now... but it seems this is not something rock/metal community values. But we'll see, time will tell. Thanks for the support!
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I see. Just know that it is in fact something that I as a very long time tool fan value very much.
This album is one of the single best rock albums of all time. 30 years later and it still amazes me.
it was a good era
Man this video is criminally underrated, I hope it blows up at some point cause the work you put into it is stunning
Glad you feel that way and thank you for the positive feedback!
whenever I listen to Tool & make art I feel like it all comes full circle
IT'S JUST A (TOOL) TO BECOME (A PERFECT CIRCLE).
Damn the making of this album is insane 💀🤘🏻
Love this video. Tool is my favorite band by far. You could do a whole movie documentary about them. It would be huge! Keep up the good work!
That's the plan! I have to break it down into albums though as It's just way too much for me to handle their entire discography in a single video. Thanks for the support glad you enjoyed it!
I never knew there was a “censored” artwork version. I had the original on TAPE- then later on cd. Side note: the 90’s were freaking AWESOME
The censored artwork you mention is the original red ribcage artwork. Walmart for stupid reasons, nixed it if they wanted their record in their store which led to the cover being a barcode. On the insert, Tool said they'd send the original insert for free to those that wanted it. I think it had more to do with the inside of the insert. With Maynard wearing the dental thing. Who knows?
Greetings to anyone who might drop by. Set a Reminder for yourself. Just click the bell Icon on the video. It will give you the time and day of the premier as well. Haha! Of course! =)
This was excellent. I will be eagerly watching for more.
Thanks Man! I appreciate that! I would hopefully manage to cover all of TOOL's discography! However this extensive coverage of their material in a way I did this video is extremely demanding. This video took me 5 months to complete =)
Great video, it’s great that you can inspire people with your passion. The more people listen to TOOL the better
I appreciate that! Glad my efforts are coming through.
I just learned as much about TOOL in the last 20 minutes as I have in the previous 29 yrs.
Great Indepth work!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Almost every Tool song has at least two meanings/messages. The words can be taken at face value, in which paint one picture, but Maynard choses the key words very carefully. By using words with multiple meanings, especially in the places that provide the context, his lyrics become layered and provoke thought.
2:52 Maynard is sporting a shirt of the Swans album Children of God.
The quality of the video is amazing. Hatts off to you dude, you did an amazing job. The editing of this is masterful and the amount of research that went into this so we can have all that info, just astonishing. This is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever watched period. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I’m not even a big Tool fan. I’ve heard some of their stuff and really liked Sober but that was it basically, now I’m really intrigued and my interest is definitely sparked. I’ve been following your channel for a while now and I just want to let you know your work is greatly appreciated, especially when it’s something on this level, just wow.
They are indeed an interesting bunch of artists. While Undertow is not talked about that much there was already so much though put into it it’s very impressive to say the least! Thanks for your support Semir! Glad you like my efforts. This one in particular took 5 months to make... quite an intense project it was for me.
This is my favorite Tool album - it's the most direct and in your face.
yes, it's sad that they went on to make a turd like "10,000 days".
The only "bad" album so far is Fear Inoculum. 10,000 days had some bangers...but nothing like their first three albums.
You've outdone yourself this time dude. Top quality work, haven't even finished the video yet! Some fascinating shit in this.
Thanks man means a lot! I wanted to see how good of a documentary I can really make if I go all out. Took me five months. Didn’t upload anything else for 3 months so I could finish this. Glad that people who have seen this seem to enjoy my efforts. Still some small mistakes left here and there but pretty close to my 100%. You will be seeing stuff like this on my channel more often, but unfortunately for obvious reasons not every video I make can be of this quality... nobody’s gonna wait for me that long to finish a video of this sort. But as I improve my animation and editing skills I should become faster. Thank you again for compliments and sticking around on my channel for a while now! 🙏
how on earth does this video only have 7.5k views? this is one of the best videos i've ever found on this website.
It’s just how it is. On UA-cam quality is usually not the priority unfortunately. This one is also somewhat of a niche topic. Glad you enjoyed the video! 😉
They can't all be cat videos.
I wanna listen to this album start to finish for the 10000th time now.
Sure! Why not?
This is a good video. deserves more views
Thanks man! Glad you liked it!
Love this! What an awesome way to start the day, thanks alot for sharing this😁✌
Happy Birthday to this MASTERPIECE. Tool, the world is a much better place with your wonderous, otherworldly compositions in it 😌
Amazing work! Looking forward to your next video.

Great work on the video. The amount of research gone into making this must have taken a lot of time and effort. I'm really looking forward to the other album's videos. Keep it up!

Excellent work ! It's brilliant, the editing and all the work to got this final result, i was literally aspirated by it

@@saysthemanbehindthemask You are welcome Mask ^^
This is and always will be my favorite TOOL album.... even though OPIATE was the beginning and my first taste of a soon to be marriage to their music. UNDERTOW was so strong... in your face... fukk you if we offend you... screaming... deep down in your bones, feeling that completely satisfied my music appetite.... TOOL is , was and always will be a self expression of everything I feel emotionally and Musically..... one might even say metaphorical they have been TOOL or instrument of therapy to all my negatives. This video is a testimonial to all the hard work that was necessary to produce this masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this.
I loved it, good job, and thanks for this video.

@@saysthemanbehindthemask Can't wait for the next video. I'm genuinely impressed. I've been trying to find more channels like yours aside from the big ones like Alfo, Poly, Lie, 8, etc. Any recommendations?
I honestly don't think I know any others apart from what you mentioned... that are putting some effort into the production of their content. Mostly people do slideshows and talk over them haha. This particular video on Undertow, took me 5 months to finish so I am far from that slideshow type of approach. I did very much. If you look closer at my profile pic youll see ‘94 show at the Trocadero in Philly. I remember it was the second time they played the area. First one being a small bar on south street philly called JC dobbs of which there were about 20-30 people there. By the time they came around for the third time it was the Aenima tour and at the Electric Factory. My fav show of all time by far!!
This exposé inspires me to play the album again right now!
As it should!
It is Sunday, April 10th, 4:29 am, and I have found this beautiful gem of a video, best 20 mins of my life learning my favorite band. *T O O L* has changed my life since the first day my ears heard Third Eye. I am subscribed and I will patiently wait until The Aenima Rockumentary comes out. That Album is so poetically Dark and means so much to me, and I would love to learn more. Keep up the amazing work, Thank You.
Wow, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed this video as it took a LOT of work! Aenima rockumentary would be probably the biggest undertaking on this channel. It is also my favourite record by TOOL so it will be exciting to actually make it happen.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Silvia's work is pure fuckin' gold!!! She's a genius!
dude great vid. and awesome job of using the music and media at your disposal and not being limited by the copyright stuff, very watchable and informative vid. also what are your thoughts on the overarching concepts of the album names being(at least in part) about spacial movements, (above- opiate )
(below-undertow) (up and down-aenima) (around left and right-laturalus) ive never heard anybody bring that up so i thougt i would share it because you brought up a bunch of interesting points i hadnt known and you really went deep on the tech. side of the recording which made it all the more watchable. keep it up brother
So If all the albums can corralate with spacial movements up to lateralus then, having covered your options in space regarding the hexagram of the dimensional movement it's only proper the next album title would deal with TIME, 10000 days, opiate controlled from above, undertow swept you up and underneath, aenima cleared you out from your stink fist all the way up until you had to pushit thru the third eye opening, after that were invited to spiral out, keep going? Ok then.... Then it's TIME, AFTER THAT oh the just kinda make a HIGHLY preseint album that Haralded the coming virus and subsequent fear...... They clearly are into some types of magik that much is clear.... Most likely some form of the secret religions
Excellent Video 😎

@@saysthemanbehindthemask When are the rest of the albums coming?
Well that's a difficult question... this video took me 5 months to make, so Aenima would be similar... maybe just a tad faster since I have and idea for that video and I am more comfortable with making this sort high quality production type of content. But I have not begun the work on it yet. To be sure you don't miss it when it's coming I'd suggest you sub! Cuz' the idea for Aenima is going to blow my "Undertow video" out of the water. Haha! Good one! Well, I tried.
I did not want this video to end
Haha! Sorry?
@@saysthemanbehindthemask the video was so good, I wanted more information forever haha
Well yeah! It was rather hard to make... not only from the point of gathering all the information and writing but also technically the editing was kind of a mind*uck! Pardon my language. A question I have for you - how did you find this video?
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I was looking for some live tool videos to watch and that was one of the first recommended videos that popped up
Hmmm... interesting. So my video does get recommended... I wish it happened more often though. Thanks for letting me know.
Great video. Side note, Paul now plays bass with Ministry
Thank you! Yup I heard about Paul joining Ministry some time ago. Good for him! Glad he’s still playing
When Adam said he keeps his Marshall in the fridge I think that was a metaphorical way of saying he tries not to use it except for distinct purposes such as live shows or recording. Often you'll see Adam only uses his Diezels at rehearsals these days as a way to preserve the Marshall.
It’s been a while since I made this… but if I recall correctly he’s not the only one putting the thing in the fridge… I don’t know if it’s common practice but it’s been done by others too… hopefully it wasn’t just a figure of speech… but I can’t be certain at this point
@@saysthemanbehindthemask sounds to me like a figure of speech. Electronics do not like humidity, neither do the other materials of the guitar.
Don’t know who you are but thank you.....
I don’t know who you are but thank you as well!
A good example would be how they used the song Prison Sex as a Tool to work through some situations that were weighing down and needed to be therapeuticly utilized
Please do each album
I hope to... But it's really intense to do videos of this quality. I am however already making small steps in the direction of starting my work on Aenima. If it comes together as I envision it... It's going to be EPIC, haha
Subscribed, everyone else should so we get more.
Thanks for your support!
Wow. That’s pretty cool they would send anyone who bought the CD the album art for free.
Undertow hits different
Does anybody have a copy or a link of the original videos the band recorded while working at Sound City & their rehearsal space during Undertow? It was about 2 hours long & used to be up on UA-cam a few years ago. It had footage of Adam creating the cover & all kinds of other cool stuff. I wish I had saved it.
I don’t think it’s available online. At least it wasn’t in 2019 when I made this. Your best chance to get it is probably from Sylvia herself probably. It’s cool stuff. I’d love to see the entire thing. But I am glad I was able to find at least some of it and put in this video. The bigger challenge will be finding similar content for Aenima.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I feel like it was one of the band members doing the filming instead of Sylvia. There was a ton of footage from their warehouse/practice space in addition to the studio footage. I believe Adam's pig even made an appearance. I watched it dozens of times, and I'm kicking myself for not saving a copy. If I end up finding it, I'll let you now.
After the long video disappeared from YT it reappeared sometime later, for a short time, chopped up into ~20-minute separate segments. But I haven’t seen it in years. I remember you got to see the entire Bolivian folk song featured at the beginning of Crawl Away.
Will you do one for Ænema, Lateralus, and 10,000 days?
Yes! I intend to cover all of their discography eventually. The difficulty of making this expansive and heavy video in terms of information and visuals is very taxing. This Undertow video took me 5 months and I HAD to stop posting on this channel for 3 months in order to focus on this video alone. Of course I’ve learned a lot while making this video, so the next one should be an easier process.
5:24 this method worked with Corey Taylor on the Iowa and self titled Slipknot albums
I guess so... but I think in many cases Corey put himself into an uncomfortable position. But yes it works most of the time.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask yeah Corey was way more extreme with his methods but I guess Maynard did some of that too.

Two months to record?! Damn that's a long time.
Albini says a session should only last one to two weeks...and yes, he works with tape.
great video! can i ask where that accent is from? i just cannot tell.
Thanks for the support! I am not really showing my face for a reason, so I will not say where I am exactly from... but it's a slavic accent I suppose. I have been living in many countries though as well English speaking countries, so my accent is not altogether typical I suppose.

Indeed they are
01:40. Ive watched that jc dobbs video a thousand times.. Theres like 7 people in the place and tool is kicking fucking ass the whole time.
Well… I hope there’s more than 7… but regardless it was an impressive performance and anyone who got to witness that show live is very very lucky. Just a few years later Maynard practically goes behind the stage… TOOL before and during Undertow was a different beast indeed!
Another band that sold their souls for talent... their words not mine.
Long before you hears their name.
I had that barcode cd. Sent in the request for the actual artwork, but nothing ever arrived.
Oh damn! You think it was yet another hoax or it was just bad luck?
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Oh, it was a conspiracy. Record label wouldn't send it for free so I would be forced to buy another copy. Yep, definitely a conspiracy.
It’s like the movie gummo
Crazy the video won best video because MTV wouldn’t play it
Your take on disgustipated is the most silly view I've heard on it. A nice bit of comic relief after a fairly good video.
Ehm… it’s not my view on disgustipated really. It’s research from several sources. Nothing in this video is based on my opinion. Fairly good video? I doubt you can find a more detailed and better researched video on this album not only on YT but on the internet overall
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I agree that it's a wonderful video, you did a great job making it, I just think it's a wrong interpretation and thus found it to be comical. If it held any water you'ed see maynard being a jain. I've not seen a single sign of that. Personally I'd say it's arguing the complete inverse.
I think you missed the point of the video and of Tool if that’s the case. Conclusion AND introduction of the video are based on statements by the band that they are merely a Tool to make you think, while the interpretation is up to the individual listener… I’d argue that’s the reason they never included lyrics with any of their albums up until last one… individual words are not that important, the whole picture is. They are to make you listen not to tell you what to think. But the lyrics “life feeds on life” IS kind of an obvious one as well as the name itself taken from Popeye. Whether the band supported veganism or was poking fun at it is once again up to interpretation. And again the source of this information is not me, I merely put points of views of others out there as I did say “SOME connect it to the promotion of veganism” I tried not to speak in absolutes in this video. With the exception of some numbers and documented facts. Artistic expressions and meanings is a different story. Obviously TOOL have become known as major trolls but this was their first record and I doubt they knew how the band would have been perceived, so they very much left a lot of the questions up in the air and gave few answers… never really clarifying much further into their career.
Now here’s MY opinion Even if MJK is a troll on a lot of things I am sure he’s clever enough to understand both sides of the argument even if he does NOT support both sides of the argument. It’s easy to poke fun at vegan community because of how sensitive they are but it does not mean their ideas are entirely wrong. Not to mention that you are the first one to bring this up out of 8K+ people who have watched this video so far. FYI there’s shitloads of info in this video and I am only one person… it’s not as easy as it looks to make this type of content.
