  • Tool bassist Justin Chancellor has lived quite a life since joining the legendary prog-metal band in 1995. Justin joined Matt Pinfield to discuss his past and current endeavors for this episode of New & Approved.
Tool has been performing since 1990, and according to Justin they aren't stopping anytime soon. The band is currently on tour and have even recently extended their show dates. They'll be playing in Los Angeles on February 14th and 15th at Crypto.com Arena. Justin also tells Matt about Tool's plans for new music and how they still have many ideas they are working on.
Justin dives into his past and discusses his biggest influences with Matt, with Buddy Holly serving as one of his first inspirations as he was growing up in Kent. He also talks about how his music classes in boarding school inspired him to pick up the bass.
Tool is still not the only place where Justin unleashes his creativity. Justin and vocalist Peter Mohamed also just released their sophomore album "Matter's Knot, Pt. 1" as the duo MTVoid.

Thanks to Matt for his enthusiasm for the older Swervedriver material and a special thanks to JC for his kind words at 2.55-3.10 and the shout out to Skyscraper, who were a band that did OK for a while but unfortunately didn't go as far as they could have, for various reasons.
Its a pleasant surprise that someone with more skill, dexterity and rhythmic flair than I could ever have should name me as an influence and it just goes to show that however modest you may consider your abilities and achievements to be, they make a difference in ways you don't realise. I'm genuinely taken aback.

Cool interview. Man I wrote to TOOL back in 95' about why no lyrics in the CD They started sending me a bunch of stuff from 95' to 97' when they actually had a 'Fan Club' lol. Some of the papers explain when Justin was being introduced to the band, order forms for the merch (I mean $12 for the wrench shirt). I bought one and still have it with the receipt. Literature from maynard explaining about certain books to read to better understand the music. And Lyric Sheets!!!! "I was just happy to have the wortds !" They sent me the demo cassette' as well. (Still have it all) Wish. I could get Justin to sign a couple things! Thanks TOOL for wrighting me back in the day! Great stuff, thanks for the upload!!! 🤘

I saw them in Montreal a couple days ago, didn't want to spend the 350-400$ for a single ticket. So I figured if I waited last minute, maybe a couple of scalpers would enter panic mode and sell cheap on TM. I managed to get a pair for 300$ about 24h before the show, and rather good places, close enough to the stage. So yeah, just look often on the app and outsmart these damn scalpers, they will sell at a loss if they have to.

Agreed, but I have seen them live several times over the years. Even got backstage to meet the guys one time. But this time around the wallet was not deep enough to go to the show. Could have seen them twice over the last month, but a $300 ticket is too high a price for me at this point.

Saw Tool for the first time a few weeks ago in Philly after being fan since early 2000s. After buying tickets, which we all know aren't cheap cause it's Tool and worth it, they announced they would be playing closer to home for me and my first thought was, I just paid all this money to see them in Philly so I think I'll pass on the Baltimore show. Fast forward to the last note played at the Philly show. I'm now purchasing tickets for the Baltimore show even though I just saw them. A ridiculous show.

Hahahah I stopped getting ripped off by Ticketmaster this tour. Average price for my SLC was just too out of reach for even a mind blowing couple of hours. I’ve seen the band live since 1992/1993 and I can no longer afford to go. Ticketmaster has ruined live music at the highest level. They use “Dynamic Pricing” and never a physical ticket, which means there is not a true fave value for concertgoers. Such a shame that great fans like me can’t contend with The evil money grubbing corp that Ticketmaster has been allowed to become. That said, bands find it hard dispute their practices because they will make so much more money. That is one of the reasons bands strive to get more successful, so they can change their lives with the potential for money. It’s a sad situation the state of live arena shows.
