Over four years have passed and I’m still consistently listening to it. It’s definitely a grower. All the songs feel shorter the more you listen to them, and I think those are the best kinds of songs.
The album that TOPPLED TAYLOR SWIFT. It singlehandedly put my faith back in music itself in a time where it takes teams of "Max Martins" , songwriting machines that put out soulless shit everyday.
It’s such an amazing album I listen to it while running on the treadmill and it just ignites something in me to push through pain barriers it’s an absolute masterpiece. Everyone compares it to other tool albums and I love all the other albums but FI just has something else about it.
As an athlete currently in the Tokyo paralympics invincible hits so hard. The lyrics mean so much to me and seeing the song live in February 2020 was easily one of the best in the set list. Although I fully agree that the older records are better I just can’t say it’s a bad ablum. They are all number 1
Adam said on some interview I remember that they want us to listen to the art and apply it to our lives. Eg. invincible for me. So without the meaning to yourself the songs do seem like a drag. Imo
Oh damn, you are in paralympics, congrats! Yes I agree in terms of connecting to the songs. Sadly I have recently realised that I really don’t attach personal feelings to the music… it’s sort of abstract to me in most cases… if a song seems deep that’s how I feel about it, if it’s cheerful I go with that. It’s all kind of in the moment type of thing for me
Absolutely amazing album. For me each tool album is its own animal while still being tool. This is no different...to me. Tool shits on every other band that has ever existed.
I was introduced to Tool only about 6months ago, I have since bought all their albums and I love all of them. Fear Inoculum is a master piece IMO, it's obviously not as gritty as previous albums but it sounds fantastic and I feel like I'm indulging when listening to it.
I love this album as much as the others. Tool's music sometimes takes awhile to fully appreciate because of it's complexity, that's what makes them great! And people have different opinions, imagine that.
Ehm… I don’t think I ever said that my point of view is some sort of absolute… I believe I made it quite clear that there’s a lot of polarising “opinions” on the record. And I think that the reaction to this album was so mixed for a few reasons… which I gave plenty of. And I think their not overly critical nor are they false. But I never said the album was bad… still plenty of great riffs, hooks etc. But the way it all came together just isn’t to my liking. Ironically I think five years or so ago my reaction would have been different. I’d probably be a huge advocate of that record… I’d be like “ohhh it’s so complex and different! And I love the length of these tracks!” I think it’s because of where I am in my music appreciation journey. I think I am not in a very prog place right now… I started to once again appreciate songs that are straight to the point and short. 5 years ago I wouldn’t consider a song a song if it had basic chorus verse chorus structure. But now I feel seeing artists letting go… I want some honesty in music right about now… too much watered down bs happening in metal right now… everyone wants to sound alike.
I liked the album from the start but after many listens I have a lot more appreciation for it now and it's a borderline masterpiece imo. I think lateralus will always be my favorite but FI is not far behind.
As soon as I watched the Undertow documentary you released, I searched your channel for the other albums!! Lol Please, please, PLEASE do the rest of them!! 🙏
Thank you! That’s a tall order though lol. Undertow documentary took me 6 months to complete! I really want to cover the rest of the albums, Aenima especially but it’s hard to make the time tbh
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Oh I can 💯 understand. Lol I'd be satisfied with Aenima, I just couldn't pick one myself to specify Hahaha. Seriously tho, I just found your channel today and I'm loving the way you put your videos together! Super thorough, and well focused. 😊👌
Thank you very much! I really do appreciate the positive feedback and support! More new stuff on the horizon! Hopefully you will not be disappointed! ;)
The fear inoculum album is the natural progression of the band into a higher consciousness and form of meditation. You’re absolutely right you need to be in the right headspace to listen to this album but I think that was intentional. If they fixed all the problems you mentioned they’d just have another lateralus album.
Well... I think Lateralus still has more diversity... but I get your angle. As I said in the video I do think this album was kind of logical to be the way it is... I just wish some of the songs had more variety or were trimmed down here and there... songs as they are are still good. But with a few adjustments and an extra song or 2 it could have been right up my alley. I love the more meditative stuff they write... Reflection is one of my favourite tracks for example... but some songs on the record just lose me on 10 minute mark or so...
I loved this who album but considering I have a Tool tattoo, I may be biased... The long tracks are perfect for me, I get so lost in them which I think is the dividing point.
I think some of his criticism is valid. They went a little bit too heavy into the instrumentals in this album as good as they are. And I do enjoy them they're very well put together. You didn't have as much of Maynard. And Maynard was the interesting part because it was really interesting how he sings and now he fades his voice in and out of guitar riffs. And you don't have a lot of that in this album. You don't have screams. You don't have that aggressiveness. Or at least him you know flexing his voice like he does in a lot of songs. Like parabol and parabola. Where the first half is him just like modulating his voice and just playing with the way he can mess with his tones.
the reason i love the album is because the production and quality of the recording is absolutely amazing and my favorite thing about tool has always been the bass guitar and drums, ive never been super interested in the lyrics or the meaning behind the songs, ive been a tool fan since i was 14 and about a year before they released 10,000 days, i didn't like 10,000 days on release very much but over the course of a year it grew on me to become equally best with every other album, exactly the same thing for me with fear innoculum, also a lot of your favorite tool songs are my least favorite with the exception of pushit but everybody is allowed their own opinions. tool inspirered me to learn to play both gutiar and bass so when they released this album full of 10 minute self indulgent riffing i wasn't dissapointed, i can see why a lot of people dont like it because there aren't really any singles on it but in my opinion it has all of the best riffs and as you explained its incredibly fun to play, so for people like myself its an 11/10
I've tried to listen to this album quite a few times but I just get so incredibly bored that I just tune out. I guess I don't have the 'depth' needed...
Great video as always. My favourite Tool album is 10,000 Days and I actually found Fear Inoculum the smoothest album to listen to, but it is probably because that was the type of music I needed at the time of its release. Descending is my favourite track of Fear Inoculum. Also I'm kind of a guy who prefers less tracks, so could also be a contributing factor.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask lol yeah but actually most fans I've talked to liked Aenima and Lateralus the most. I love 10,000 Days because of the production, and the overall tone of the record.
That is true. For 10K days would be number 3 for me after Aenima and Lateralus. FI is last but not because it’s bad… anyways you watched my video so you know how I feel. I think for me I just have been listening to prog for like 10 years and I must have gotten tired of it just a little bit and sorta have gotten back to basics.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Your feelings on FI are valid regardless, we don't all have to like the same discography in the exact same way. My favourite Slipknot album is their self titled debut but most people I've asked prefer either Iowa or Vol. 3.
That's true. I think that's why I like to share my opinions and hear what others have to say on the topic. As for Slipknot for me... actually self titled is my favourite as well. Iowa has great songs but in comparison to self titled there are fewer good songs. Self titled was also so freaking raw I love it!
I don’t know how to put this, and the tone is not critical but The Grudge is not from 10k Days. I mean your opinion and experience is valid but it’s really difficult to get pass the fact when only few seconds into the video, it says The Grudge is from 10k!!! I thought I made a mistake but nope! It’s not even an obscure fact. A non-fan who is doing an opinion piece would check a track list and no serious fan would mix that up!
Oh damn… you are correct… rushed video this one was… I didn’t even stop for a second. Opening track on lateralus… initially I wanted to mention Jambi than just thought of “the grudge” from the top of my head. In all honesty Lateralus and undertow are two albums I listen to the least especially since FI dropped… I would consider myself a serious Tool fan 2 years ago… my video on Undertow speaks for itself. But for the past year or so I have had a major falling out with music… sadly life happens
I've been a fan of Tool somewhat over the years I would say, not a diehard fan by any means. When this album came out, I was blown away honestly and could not stop listening to it. After awhile i moved on to other music but would occasionally listen and fall in love again. The last go around which is currently ongoing which is how i found your channel, is enlightening me to who Tool really is and was. I could go on and on here but basically I've been listening to each album and trying to process what they are trying to do with it and discovering layer upon layer of musicality, creativity, skill at their instruments and song writing, time keeping that is very challenging to play but very rewarding as well. I love all the albums but I have to say as controversial as my opinion is, Fear Inoculum is my favorite.
We'll, different strokes and all that, but what I find amusing here (and in just about every negative review of FI) is that every item described as a problem is something I personally find appealing. Love the lengthy tracks, love the interludes, love the jammy virtuosity, love the lost-in-the-abyss quality of the album overall. Great record. Wish everyone could hear it once thru my ears.
Dude I don't understand why your channel so low no disrespect but I hope it's not the accent, took me like one vid get it over it now I love it bro, your stuff is criminally underrated
Sorry, this came out long but it’s the answer. Well thank you I guess. The early stuff was kind of heavy on the accent but I did not realise it… it was also the slow pacing looking back at it now. Apart from that algorithm has a lot to do with my content not being as popular. Over the years I have learned about how it works and it has a lot to do with topics. They have to be relevant or kind of provocative (for instance my “Sober” video has Kurt Cobain in thumbnail, so people automatically know that I will mention what he had to say, so people want to share their thoughts on how Kurt can or cannot say anything about it). Or because of the Manson’s recent controversy one video with MM but unrelated to the topic randomly gets recommended. Overall I would say that early stuff I did has to do with my shortcomings, later on it’s more about algorithm and competition growing too. Because honestly I started uploading in 2016 and there were very few channels who did what I did… now there’s significantly more but the and effort in editing quality and background music for the most part is still low comparing to what I have been doing for the past 2 years. I hope you noticed that my editing takes more effort than taking a few pictures and making a slideshow with voiceover. I like to take a more documentary and creative approach to my content. Another important point is that due to my videos being time consuming to make (undertow video took me 6 months) I don’t upload as often as I should unfortunately, that has A LOT to do with my channel being undermined by both people and YT algorithm. Also I don’t do this full time obviously, so I can’t invest as much time as I would like to. To address the accent for a sec, I thought it was playing a major role too but I began noticing channels in different niches with much thicker Slavic accents began to pop up but they do very well regardless… so I doubt accent is the major factor. Hope it gives you an idea if you care lol
@@saysthemanbehindthemask so in depth that's y I love your channel, and ur editing is world's beyond and other vids on bands, the way u went so in depth on Coreys voice was amazing bro plzz don't stop.any plans for a audioslave doc?
Thanks again, glad you like my stuff. Doc on Audioslave? Never thought of it but I guess it would make sense to cover at some point when start diving into the grunge stuff.
Tool. It's funny to me when fans have expectations of "their" band. "they should do this, or not this, or sound like this, or not this..." . This is another conduit Tool has offered to not only enjoy what they have offered you but to also seek out what you might identify with, perhaps learn. Or not. Whatever the case, it's another opportunity to calm down and enjoy it. Or not.
Of course it’s their band BUT if there is no audience there’s no artist really. Every artist owes their success to their audience. A band without an audience is not worth much… imagine me making UA-cam videos and than putting them all in private so no one can see them… would the videos have any value if no one knew they existed? The same applies to anyone who creates anything including TOOL. As an audience plays an important role in any artist’s career we as such are in the very least are allowed to have expectations and whatnot… and we’re not supposed to like everything TOOL does just because they graced us with their presence. Besides critical thinking is vital when it comes to TOOL’s work… if everyone likes everything - where’s the challenge and how would any artist grow if all they get is praise. Being a fan is cool but liking everything by default a band you are a fan of does… is ridiculous. Criticism makes artists grow and develop
I remember when Led Zeppelin came out with Houses of the Holy and fans were bitching because they wanted the exact same as before. Artists don't work that way, they evolve. Appreciate the change and evolution. FI is as delicious and ingenious as their other albums.
Thing about prog music is the more you listen to it, the more you like it. It's almost like hypnosis. And since this album is arguably their most progressive, logic would dictate that it might take you a few years before it starts to sink into your subconscious and you will start to love it. I'd be willing to bet that if I talk to you in 10 years you would have a very different opinion about fear inoculum
That is true... I've been listening to prog for a few years now and have noticed the same thing... Karnivool comes to mind and their "Sound Awake" album... I used to really struggle listening to their 10 minute songs while I loved all the shorter ones. Several years later those longer songs have become some of my favourites. So yes it is possible that I will see FI in a different light a few years from now... but not just yet.
I don’t think I can say that with absolute confidence. From the feedback I gathered FI is generally least favourite record among fans. So it has to do with music… anyway I said my piece in the video
honestly 10,000 days and fear inoculum are my personal favorites. Course I appreciate and love all of their other work, and certain songs from the previous albums (Like the Holy Trinity, Stinkfist, etc) really resonate with me, but I just vibe best with these.
I didn’t really like it much at first listen but I loved it over time. I guess it was a little different like Maynard not singing as much, the lack of aggression, similar “sounds” that was heard before, and especially the lack of a real “climax” in songs. Eventually though, I really enjoyed the more chilled out vibe, the musicality and yes, the song writing was challenging to get in to but really worth it once it clicks because these songs are nuanced and complex. But yes the interludes aren’t as good as Aenima or Lateralus. One day it may click, or not, but you should still try to give it a few more spins over time and see how you like it. Cheers and great video. That undertow Docu was really awesome man!
It took me 2 years to get into this album. I liked it on first listen. But wasn’t really in love with it. I put it down for some time and after revisiting I’m really into it.
I also really didn't love it when it came out. But it grew on me like a tumor dude, my "favorite Tool album" is always changing but it flip flops between FI and Lateralus the most.
The album is really good. Compared to the other Tool albums it’s not my favorite for sure. But I was terrified after A Perfect Circles last album that came out shortly before Tool’s. I hated that album and I’ve never hated anything Maynard had been apart of. But songs like Pneuma and Tempest are 100% Tool. They’ve gotten older and I’m proud to be a fan of that band.
Your taste in music is that of a teenager. This is by far their best record hands down. If you ever talk bad about this album again I'll personally find you and make you listen to it until you like it 😘
That’s a response of a teenager I’d say Lol. But come on now… don’t need to get personal. I think I was fair and never said the album is actually bad. That being said… I was aware that Tool fans can be rather sensitive.
I didn't enjoy 10,000 days much - it felt like a backward step in the progression they had going with opiate, undertow, Aenima, and Lateralus. I think they might have left too long between albums and in that time post-metal emerged and lots of other bands were pushing the genre forward like Isis. I felt like 10,000 days was them trying to stay relevant with the emerging new scene and younger bands influenced by Tool. I enjoyed Fear Inocculum more, it felt more in line with the feel of Lateralus. Although I think they need to be a bit more direct in parts and self-edit (overly long and repetitive songs). They should get back to doing a few more immediate tracks like the undertow/aenima era but I don't think that's going to happen. If they make more stuff it will probably continue with this slow meandering approach.
Seems to me as well that they will continue on the same path for song writing. Especially keeping in mind that they re-released “Opiate” as if it was a song of FI.
I feel like a mere mortal shaking my fist at the gods! It is a good record but is divisive and I think for a good reason! The record has been growing on me recently but my initial reaction to it still lingers, so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to talk about why feelings towards Fear Inoculum are so polarising. Hopefully TOOL fans will forgive my blasphemy! I am a TOOL fan myself so it's a tricky situation. Thanks for your time and support! JD
Great video as always, man. In my opinion this is my personal 2nd favorite record for them (1st being undertow). I can't exactly argue with a lot of the point you made, but I do believe it's just a personal preference. I honestly didn't much like this album at first, but after a while I fell in love with it. Fear Inoculum was actually the first Tool song I intentionally listened to. I think the beauty of this album for me personally is the atmosphere it brings to the table. It's a very meditative, relatable, patient, and slow rolling ride that paints a vivid image in my brain. As much as I love younger and more active Maynard, I really love his chemistry with the band on this one. He backs off a bit more to still do his job, it's just less in your face as the music sort of carries you and gives you a bit more room to breath in the instrumental sections. He's still there to provide his vague yet also relatable lyrics, and I think him backing off a bit provides a little more chance for the music to take you and let you simmer with the ideas and poetry he puts out for you. As I'm sure you know, one of the multiple explanations as to how Tool got it's name, is that it's meant to be a tool for introspection that applies itself to your life. I think the slow roll of this album with the less frequent and more soothing vocals from Maynard is the best and most effective way for that to happen. I almost like to think of this album as a therapy session. Pnuema for me personally is about humanity as one spirit and trying to breath your life, your Pnuema, into the chaotic world around you. Invincible tells a relatable story for all, one of the constant struggles and pains of everyday life slowly deteriorating one's ability to persevere. Descending is about an aging spirit becoming dulled by everyday life finding the will to engage with their own life and live what little time they have left to it's fullest. These songs all, to me, perfectly embody what Tool is meant to be. Whereas in the past, it feels like their songs were short stories or novels that mastered story telling and relatable concepts, this feels like each song is an epic with more vague poetic analogies that connect with the listener. Sorry for the rant, it's difficult to put into words why this album resonates with me so much. I hope I could convey my ideas clearly to maybe give some insight on the other side of the argument.
Oh it’s fine! Didn’t feel like a rant at all! I am always open to different perspectives! I can agree with how deep and personal this album is even though I fail to connect on the same level as you. But the way vocal melodies flow i can tell how story driven this record really is. I keep myself open for this one and hope to understand this album a little more in the future.
Tool is my favourite band because they engage my brain, body and heart/spirit equally. Most bands or genres of music might appeal to one or two of these but rarely all three. I love FI but if I have to criticise it I would say that it is more cerebral and less physical or spiritual/emotive than their previous albums. Partly this is down to Maynard's performance lacking the intensity of his youth, which to be fair is inevitable. Only on Descending does he move beyond a feeling of world-weariness. Having said that, his singing is still sublime and the main reason why Tool are much more than a prog metal band. I'll finish by poking the hornet's nest. IMO Danny overplays on this album. However I'm not complaining as DC, being a true god, can do no wrong.
To reply to your last comment.... watching Danny play this album live is kind of tough because he recorded such a downright difficult bunch of tracks! I don't know why someone would make something this difficult knowing you would have to replay it over and over on tour! Lol he is not human!
I created my own edit of the album from the wav files. I call it "Focused Inoculum" clocking in at 51 mins and it's the only version I listen to. I respect the extended version but it has a lot of redundancy. All I did was trim the subjective fat.
I just watched the documentary on Undertow... it was great! The accent only bothered me a little bit (jk). I would love to see a documentary on the other albums...
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Haha Jk the accent certainly doesn't bother me.. I thought it was funny when you mentioned it though. But I love the videos. There's not enough good Tool content on UA-cam.. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you! Thanks!
Have you ever tried to listen to a full King Crimson album of the 2000s Era ? ( Their last two studio records ) The ConstruKction of Light 2000 and The Power to Believe 2003 have had a permanent impact on Jones and Carey especially, as the riffs in songs like The Patient attest : a straight out rip-off, as stated by Adam Jones himself and stickered on the CD package of King Crimson The Power To Believe album ( I bought that one in 2003 ) TOOL has just released a record that they themselves would want to listen to, it's full on Prog and it doesn't fit the "Song" format in any way. So when you or Fantano say "it's bad song writing", a true Tool fan can only cringe in disapproval. It's not meant to be "digestible" in any way And Fantano, a solid 4 ? Please, stick to your own feeble songwriting process and ca$h your UA-cam money in silence
First: No I have not listened to King Crimson... so no comment there... I like prog but I am selective. Second: the "Fantano part" was a joke... let me break it down for you... I showed Fantano and like to dislike ratio of his video... which is basically 50/50 so it got plenty of hate... what I meant by that is TOOL fans can't take criticism very well. And you are a proof of that. But I actually do not agree with his rating and agree with only some of the negative points he mentioned about the album. In my opinion it's nowhere near "4" but it's fine because I realise that people have different points of view and preferences. Third: I did say that the album was very self indulgent for the band... so I am fully aware they did FI for themselves. And I never said "it's bad songwriting", you are taking things out of context to fit your narrative. Four: true TOOL fans? What would that be exactly? Sheep? Somebody who thinks TOOL can do no wrong? That's the worst kind of fan any artist can have... that's not a true fan! True fan helps their favourite artist grow by giving constructive criticism which I am pretty sure I did... I am not just spewing hate like you do. I am pretty sure TOOL dislike sheep mentality... MJK's lyrics elude to that in both TOOL and A Perfect Circle and probably Puscifer too. Five: you say their music is "not meant to be digestible"... I disagree with that statement very much. The reason TOOL got so big is BECAUSE they made PROG DIGESTIBLE. Which is why even casual metal fans know who TOOL are! FI is less so and I think that is the main complaint I have with this record... but I also understand why they made this record the way they did. And I said that in the video too. Six: Don't assume you know me or "my feeble way of songwriting" by watching one video of mine... because you don't. Seven: And finally I am quite certain you did not watch the video in it's entirety and just jumped to conclusions that I just "dis TOOL". So you just don't have the patience to hear a different point of view, open your mind and be objective. Strange for someone who can sit through an entire album of King Crimson. Hey, look I broke down my reply to your silly comment into 7 sections! How's that for feeble writing? In case you didn't realise it's FI reference. I just wanted to make sure you are aware because I don't think you are as smart as you think you are. Have a nice time of day
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Obviously you took the feeble writing part very much to heart ( ! ) But I put Fantano, not you next to that, in a very short sentence - guess you missed it and YOU jumped to conclusions to fit YOUR narrative. Yes by the end of your video you bring things sort of back in balance and perspective a little bit. My whole point is : true fans would not judge a Tool track by how digestible it is or isn't. I'm sick and tired of "Fans" who keep comparing anything they do to Undertow - in a subtle or not so subtle fashion. That album was made almost 30 years ago. You made some valid arguments and others not so much, with shocking adjectives that I already addressed. I'm not gonna repeat what I already wrote in the previous comment or do a Powerpoint 7 chapter response ;-)
“Feeble songwriting” to heart? Not really, it’s just funny. Also you mentioned Fantano twice, so it feels like you very much drew parallels between what both of us said. I don’t think I have ever compared FI to Undertow. That would not make sense… at the very start I talk about 10K days the most and actually mention every record in some capacity. I brought up undertow at the start for the purpose of progression. Again in terms of how digestible TOOL’s stuff is, I disagree as I think they are very good at it. It’s their strong point, not something to be ashamed of as a TOOL fan… I think making prog digestible is hard to do. Overall, Watch my “Genius of Tool Undertow” video to see what kind of a fan I personally am. And my videos take a lot more work than a PowerPoint presentation buddy, granted this one was simple because of time constraints. Took you a while to admit that I brought up some valid points and not just subjectively hated on the record. That’s simply not what I do.
@@magusking9215 why don't you just shut up and make a video on UA-cam instead? At least he's discussing his opinion in a pleasant manner in the video unlike you and I are, by just going to random UA-cam videos and then blowing our asses out on text. Put out your video then we'll talk. Also yes, you have a point, but he has a point too. And neither of you are right. Whatever tool has done, they've done because they felt it right. If you like the record listen to it. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Division of opinion is what forms the basis of any healthy growth. If everything was only black or everything was only white, then we'd never know the other colour. I'm glad there are so many opinions on this album. And i hope tool puts out maybe one last record. And i know that if they do, they'll have evolved and will make something different. Something new that neither of us would expect. Spiral Out 🤘🏼
The album has grown on me in parts but it still doesn't hit me as genius or particularly different like their other albums do. BTW is there any plans to continue the Genius of Tool videos? Loved the one on Undertow but I can't see any others?
Yuh, my feelings are similar to FI. And yes there are plans to work Aenima next but that’s a big undertaking so it will take time. Thank you for watching
I don’t think I can answer that since I am not well versed in that sub genre. Started listening to prog stuff with more recent bands since 2008 or so… with Tool being the oldest prog band in my playlist.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I believe that is the main reason you are not enjoying this album as much, you mentioned in the video when the track is long and you start questioning its length or where you are in the listening experience your interpretation of this phenomenon is that there is something wrong with the flow of the track, or its compositional structure... now as you know prog is a very cerebral music and gets its influences from a long list of classical, jazz, modern classical, abstract, ambient, psychedelic etc and there are other forms of art involved in it too poetry, literature, theatre... also we know that one of the most abstract intellectual experimental prog bands of all time (King crimson) has been one of TOOLs main influences what I'm trying to tell you is there are other elements (mostly conceptual ones) that are more important to a prog band than flow, lets not forget we are talking about a genre which is perfectly ok for the musicians to sit absolutely still and do nothing for 22 minuets in the middle of a song
I think part of the problem in general, is the push for people to have shorter and shorter attentions spans. Subtle changes in human behavior, influenced by modern media, the internet (biggest culprit) and quick pace of life have made a lot of people unable to dedicate more than 5 minutes to something. This videos creator himself claims his mind wanders off or loses interest during some of the songs. That's odd to me. If you can't listen to a 15 minutes song without wandering off then how would you complete a complex task at work or pay attention while driving? This attention span problem is becoming more serious every year.
I get the point but 15 minute songs is not in the very least a standard length of a song even for prog. For Tool as well. When a song is written in such a way that you don’t notice the length that I would consider a well written song. It’s just not the case for this album. To me a 10 minute song is not a problem so I wouldn’t consider myself a listener with a short attention span. Overall it’s a matter of preference. To each their own. I am glad people enjoy this album but for me because of this album I have a bit of a falling out with Tool.
I disagree..... slightly. I do find this album my least favorite however there is one song on this album which I find is amazing: "Invincible". I don't know why it didn't get radio play however the title track did. To me that makes no sense. But I guess that's just me. I do find that my favourite Tool songs off each album are not the same as the average Tool fan. Off 10,000 Days it is "Right in Two". Lateralus is "Ticks & Leeches". Undertow is "Flood". And Aenima is a harder choice but I'd say "H." Maybe I'm just weird that way.
Invincible is a such an amazing track flood and H are also two of the most underrated tracks from tool but I’d say the #1 most underrated would have to be Jimmy
I have been a Tool fan since they came out and love all their albums, except fear inoculum. It all sounds like extremely long and repetitive versions of songs they have already made. It lacked the exact things the band is known for....creativity and depth.
The problem is that it's Maynards worst album, but the bands best album. The insufferable bastards that obsess over MJK don't like the album. If you're a true fan of the whole band then chances are you enjoy it. I personally love the album.
I know what you’re saying And that being said, I can listen to it and appreciate the musicianship/ But playing in a tool cover band, would I want to cover one of these songs?. No.
Honestly, I used to sing a lot of Tool stuff a few years back… but I as well have no desire to sing material from FI. I think it’s more fun for them cuz they wrote it and the songs are very jam driven. It’s strange… perhaps if covering songs as a full band but doing it your own way, like shortening some of the songs by trimming unnecessary lengthy passages.., that might work. Like I’d love to hear some of the FI songs as regularly structured songs. Because they still have hooks, choruses and verses. That might be a good idea. Besides covering famous bands one to one is not the most creative outlet for musicians even if it’s a cover band. Making famous songs your own can be a lot of fun
Oooookay. I take umbrage with your list of good Tool songs and why they're good songs. You like the Paul D'Amour-era singles and Reflection. Like... I don't think you really like or understand Tool - I think you like appearing to like Tool.
The dumbest comment I read today. What are you on about? My favourite album is Aenima with Lateralus being second favourite. Which applies to probably 80% of Tool fans. Those 2 albums are easily at the top of the list of their entire fan base . So what’s your point? Also the 5 songs I mentioned are songs that come to mind when I think of tool… I did not say they are my favourite. Also you missed Schism which is just convenient for you to make your point. One of my favourite songs by Tool is Rosetta Stoned for example… and again the song is very unique. That’s my angle… I like unique songs not only by separate bands but within the discography of each specific band and FI is the least versatile album by Tool. Tool was my favourite band from 2014-2019 I don’t need to “appear” to like Tool… for what benefit would I do that? Obviously I am having a falling out with their music because I did not enjoy FI as much as I would like to BUT Tool will probably forever remain in my top 5 favourite bands ever.
I can understand your opinion, but I think this has to do with the meaning of each of these songs. If it had resonated more with you then you'ed have enjoyed it more. Personally I find the meaning of invincible to be deeply touching, to have a song about the fight of a warrior that technology has pasted by, and yet still dives head first into the battle, while knowing he is no longer invincible. I touches me deeply. I can recall every detail of the songs on this album. So I have to say, this one was just not meant for you, it was not made to be relatable to you.
Obviously if I don’t enjoy it as much as I do most of their other stuff it’s not meant for me. But it has nothing to do with meanings of the songs. I approached this one purely from musical point of view and it simply doesn’t flow as well as I expected it to and a couple songs simply overstay their welcome. Obviously this is my preference.
Ehh. Its disappointing to me. I gave it a couple listen thoughts when it came out and never felt the desire to go back to it. A couple songs are good. The rest is boring. Danny Carey is amazing, but its mostly his parts that Im hearing. I'll give it another go
If this album isn't your favorite Tool album then it's because you like their songs, not the creative journey of the band, which is the heart of what makes Tool so special, and what makes the experience of listening to them such a deep and profound experience. Fear is lightyears ahead of what the average music fan can fully appreciate, and understand. You saying you hear just long songs of repeated "sameness" just goes to show that this one is over your head and maybe you should take a back seat to critiquing it. You can't label Tool as a genre or have an expectation of "singles" that you find palatable. Tool isn't making music for casuals, they are growing and creating and evolving and it's a privilege to witness.
Dude, chill. You don’t know me from atom. So don’t say as if I am “below your level of music appreciation”. I listen to far more complex music than TOOL makes. My perception of the album still stands - “it’s way too drawn out, ambiguous, self indulgent AND unnecessarily so”. Simple as that. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. I gave my opinion on what I think of it and you are entitled to yours… but please don’t judge people and their taste in music based on your own perception and criteria for what is good music in your opinion… because you are never going to win. I like what I like and you like what you like. No to mention that a significant number of TOOL fans do not like this album as much you say they should. As I said I appreciate what TOOL did with FI… BUT it didn’t do much for me on musical, personal or spiritual level. They have better albums
Well to each their own but it has nothing to do with my appreciation of their work. If a song is intricate and has been written for a long time… the song doesn’t become great just because of that. Sometimes simpler things work better rather than being overdone or overthought
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I am not arguing with your sentiment, YES most amazing songs utilize more simplistic riffs, HOWEVER when a song is more complex, it takes a keen ear to REALLY pick up on the nuances. Each listening to TOOL's work, is ALMOST like listening to it for the first time again. TO ME AT LEAST, there's almost ALWAYS something I didn't pick up on the last hearing. It also depends on what setup you have to pick up on those nuances. Sorry if my OG statement seemed to be attacking you, I did not mean it that way, I'm glad we could have a productive discourse in music :) after all, isn't that what music is about?
I agree! That's what it's all bout to me as well. Communication with people who have different point of views. I'd rather have an adult discussion about any subject matter than a pissing contest of who's right. This happens a lot here on UA-cam. So kudos to you for being on the adult side of the discussion.
Thanks for the fair and levelheaded analysis. You accurately described my personal issues with the album better than I could.
Thanks! Glad you think so. I was trying to be as objective as possible despite my own attachments and expectations for this band.
Two years later and i am still listening to it everyday
As am I
Damn right
yup, Tool everyday keeps the Doctor away.
🤌 Same
Over four years have passed and I’m still consistently listening to it.
I didnt have to get over ur voice. I think it actually adds to the quality of the video.
Well thank you! I really appreciate that!
It’s such an amazing album I listen to it while running on the treadmill and it just ignites something in me to push through pain barriers it’s an absolute masterpiece. Everyone compares it to other tool albums and I love all the other albums but FI just has something else about it.
It's the most tooly tool album
@@saysthemanbehindthemask It’s all good brother. Enjoy your journey!
Hopefully you will not be disappointed! ;)
I agree with everything you said. Tool only makes great albums but the songs ramble along and lack purpose (for lack of a better word to describe it).
As always, a fine analysis and so an interesting video to watch (and share).
Hey Christoph! Thanks for the support as always! ;)
I loved this who album but considering I have a Tool tattoo, I may be biased... The long tracks are perfect for me, I get so lost in them which I think is the dividing point.
well said sir..you have articulated my thoughts on this album perfectly..
Thank you! Glad we’re on the same page! 😉
Where the first half is him just like modulating his voice and just playing with the way he can mess with his tones.
the reason i love the album is because the production and quality of the recording is absolutely amazing and my favorite thing about tool has always been the bass guitar and drums, ive never been super interested in the lyrics or the meaning behind the songs, ive been a tool fan since i was 14 and about a year before they released 10,000 days, i didn't like 10,000 days on release very much but over the course of a year it grew on me to become equally best with every other album, exactly the same thing for me with fear innoculum, also a lot of your favorite tool songs are my least favorite with the exception of pushit but everybody is allowed their own opinions. tool inspirered me to learn to play both gutiar and bass so when they released this album full of 10 minute self indulgent riffing i wasn't dissapointed, i can see why a lot of people dont like it because there aren't really any singles on it but in my opinion it has all of the best riffs and as you explained its incredibly fun to play, so for people like myself its an 11/10
It is a masterpiece. Some listeners just don’t have the depth needed.
I've tried to listen to this album quite a few times but I just get so incredibly bored that I just tune out. I guess I don't have the 'depth' needed...
Sweet! Max Derrat released a video on the Lateralus album today and you dropped one on FI! Cool!!!
Well every time there's an anniversary or something like that videos by any particular artist will begin to pop up! =)
Damn man! So far I seem to be in minority here… at least among my long time subscribers
Most demanding album they have created . Skill and length
Fair enough. To each their own
That album is one of their best work period.
Well… it’s hard to be objective about music for the most part. It’s like arguing about which colour is better.
This is a problem with the listener not the band.
I really like FI. Can't wait to see what's next.
Well given 13 years to get FI...we should get the next Tool album sometime in the 2030's or 2040's.
Hopefully before WW3 kicks off anyway. 😅
This is a good critique ... edit: Except your implication that the interludes on Lateralus are not appropriate
I quite enjoy this record though, I kind of consider myself a casual Tool listener.
Oh wow! I’d say that’s unusual… unless you are really into prog and a 10 minute song is easy for you to process. 👏 hope you are doing well!
Their best album.
Music is subjective! Any album could be their "best" album to any number of people...

@@saysthemanbehindthemask no joke
Well, that's your opinion, man.
Edit: But yes. As much as I love this album I tend to agree with much of this critique of it.

I think it’s a good idea. I’d like to hear it actually

I just watched the documentary on Undertow... it was great! The accent only bothered me a little bit (jk). I would love to see a documentary on the other albums...
Glad you liked. Accent, Well… what you gonna do… but it sorta fades with time… so there’s that
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Haha Jk the accent certainly doesn't bother me.. I thought it was funny when you mentioned it though. But I love the videos. There's not enough good Tool content on UA-cam.. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you! Thanks!
Good to hear that. Well yuh… it bothers some people… so I mention it sometimes. Thanks for watching!
Have you ever tried to listen to a full King Crimson album of the 2000s Era ? ( Their last two studio records )
The ConstruKction of Light 2000 and The Power to Believe 2003 have had a permanent impact on Jones and Carey especially,
as the riffs in songs like The Patient attest : a straight out rip-off, as stated by Adam Jones himself and stickered on the CD package of King Crimson The Power To Believe album ( I bought that one in 2003 )
TOOL has just released a record that they themselves would want to listen to, it's full on Prog and it doesn't fit the "Song" format in any way. So when you or Fantano say "it's bad song writing", a true Tool fan can only cringe in disapproval.
It's not meant to be "digestible" in any way
And Fantano, a solid 4 ?
Have a nice time of day
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Obviously you took the feeble writing part very much to heart ( ! )
But I put Fantano, not you next to that, in a very short sentence - guess you missed it and YOU jumped to conclusions to fit YOUR narrative.
Spiral Out 🤘🏼
ConstruKtion of Light is an amazing album, though.
I'm in the best work camp.
Fair enough
The album has grown on me in parts but it still doesn't hit me as genius or particularly different like their other albums do. BTW is there any plans to continue the Genius of Tool videos? Loved the one on Undertow but I can't see any others?
Yuh, my feelings are similar to FI. And yes there are plans to work Aenima next but that’s a big undertaking so it will take time. Thank you for watching
Comment for algorithm
saystheman behindthemask,
one question from you may friend, do you like classic prog rock?
I don’t think I can answer that since I am not well versed in that sub genre. Started listening to prog stuff with more recent bands since 2008 or so… with Tool being the oldest prog band in my playlist.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask
I believe that is the main reason you are not enjoying this album as much,
you mentioned in the video when the track is long and you start questioning its length or where you are in the listening experience your interpretation of this phenomenon is that there is something wrong with the flow of the track, or its compositional structure...
now as you know prog is a very cerebral music
and gets its influences from a long list of classical, jazz, modern classical, abstract, ambient, psychedelic etc
and there are other forms of art involved in it too poetry, literature, theatre...
also we know that one of the most abstract intellectual experimental prog bands of all time (King crimson) has been one of TOOLs main influences
what I'm trying to tell you is there are other elements (mostly conceptual ones) that are more important to a prog band than flow, lets not forget we are talking about a genre which is perfectly ok for the musicians to sit absolutely still and do nothing for 22 minuets in the middle of a song
Bands have made whole careers with less ideas than are in 1 track from Fear Inoculum.
say what you want, but having such an album from 60 year old musicians is quite decent and unusual.
Of course it is. Regardless of the outcome the intention and effort that went into this album is admirable in the very least
Excellent work!
I very much feel the way you do about this album. Not a bad listen, but I loose interest.
I know what you’re saying
And that being said, I can listen to it and appreciate the musicianship/
But playing in a tool cover band, would I want to cover one of these songs?.
I don't agree. This album reacts to everything that is music now. It demands attention in first place. And many more things
To each their own. It’s an open conversation
@@saysthemanbehindthemask That's fair.
Ehh. Its disappointing to me. I gave it a couple listen thoughts when it came out and never felt the desire to go back to it. A couple songs are good. The rest is boring. Danny Carey is amazing, but its mostly his parts that Im hearing. I'll give it another go
Yup I found it hard to enjoy as well unfortunately.
I couldn't disagree more.. you obviously do not appreciate the work that goes into each individual song.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I'm very passionate about my music lol. Especially when it comes to TooL
then just go and listened to skillet or whatever
Sure. Great comment by the way
