  • Ever since installing the ME221 standalone ECU into the MX5 I've had to look at a blinking Immobiliser Bulb on the intrument panel. It's a perfectly normal, but quite annoying, side effect of installing a standalone ECU. In this Episode I plan to put a stop to it's flashing once and for all by exposing the instrument cluster in the car and pulling out the Immobiliser bulb. A simple solution to the problem, however, getting access to the bulb is quite tricky - the trim surrounding the steering column and instrument cluster needs to be removed, then the instrument cluster needs to be carefully extracted to gain access to the bulb. Once it's removed my sanity can breathe a sigh of relief.
    The ECU in this video is a Gen 1 ME221 (black board), but this procedure will also apply to the Gen 1 ME442, AND the Gen 2 ME221 & ME442 (white board). Many parts of this video will also be applicable to other popular standalone plug & play ECUs for the MX5, for example, the Megasquirt MS2 & MS3, and Speeduino boards.
    The car in this video is my 2001 Mazda MX5 - the latest Fast Rust project car. Fun & reliable daily driver is my goal for this iconic sports car. If you want to follow along with my 'Miata Journey’, check out this playlist: • Mazda MX5 / MIATA - ...

    I have went for an ME221 SC build like yourself. I also had the immobiliser light constantly flashing on the dashboard, but all I had to do was remove the immobiliser module from under the steering wheel column. I only discovered this while trying to find a 12V source for a central locking kit, but there is a square box with big plug on the RHS of the steering column and removing it got rid of the light and took less than 1 minute.

      Well, that would have been easier! Thanks for the tip

      By removing the module does it stop working because I’m having issues with mine and my car doesn’t want to start after I’m wondering if I remove it I’ll be done with that issue any ideas ?

      Cheers William. Yes I've still got the Capri. Took it out for a track day last month. Performed well but highlighted a few jobs that need doing. Will try make a Tech Tip out of some of them.

    Need to do the airbag light. Aftermsrket steering wheel. Removed the passenger modules got a code passenger one went off. Did hear there's a buzzer that goes off so its tape can't see why I get some high temp paint and spray it or electrical tape we will see. Nice one good vid

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  Рік тому +1

      To get rid of this as far as I understand it you just need to wire in a resistor so the ECU 'thinks' the airbag is still there

      @@FastRust not sure what issues everyone else had. I pulled the cluster out. Untwisted the bulb holder. Removed the bulb and not 1 problem. Thats on mk2 NB. No buzzer nothing. Then put it all back

    Nice one, my immobiliser light is still winking at me! Might be the job I do next!

    I've been getting code 24 since I installed my ME442, do you know what the code means and would the immobiliser still be working with the aftermarket ecu?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  Рік тому

      Not sure. Might be a question for ME that one. Immobiliser does not work after installing an aftermarket ECU. You should know because the immobiliser dash light will flash constantly

    I have a 1496 egr fault code on a 2004 2.5 mx5, changed the egr valve and engine is running ok, problem free. The only trouble is, although the code pointed to the egr motor, the fault code still comes up and the check engine light returns after every reset. According to forums it could be a part of a circuit board burned out as the egr motor failed sending 12 volts to the ECU. I could get the ECU repaired at great cost but the car is running perfectly. Can you use the same method to remove the CEL bulb and is the bulb the same type and fixture to the bulb you removed ?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  Рік тому

      Yeah if you pull the instrument cluster out it's exactly the same process to remove the CEL. Or you could hotwire it to another bulb so it illuminates/goes off during start up. Done this on the truck for the ABS light.

    On my 2004 NB it is not necessary to remove those three screws on the lower steering column panel. They only secure the bottom panel, the top panel snaps onto it. Since the bottom panel is not being removed, I need only pull the top panel off and then proceed to the dash bezel.

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  Рік тому

      Yeah you're right. I had set out with the intention of removing both halves but quickly realised this wasn't needed.
