They are not cheaper cause in the end the house is ruined. Tearing out the crap will cost more than what was done and then it will need to be done again.
Except that even if you pay extra money you can easily come up with the same result. Almost all residental companies at this point just map out the work and then hire general laborers to actually do it. So the quality of the work you are expecting is from someone 20 years in the trade, but you get some guy who barely knows anything and has just been working under the contractor for a year doing all the work. This has been my experience for everyone I've had do work at my house even if I pay the 'premium' price. If you want the best quality work you literally have to do it yourself because no one else cares about how your house will end up looking except for you.

Holy shit, 3 years ago I attempted my own reno for the first time and it worked out pretty good. Not professional by any means and it took a loooong time, but it looks nice, is finished and everything is straight, I am proud of it anyway. This here work you are showcasing is done by someone who was in light speed mode to get shit done with 0-f$cks given and it's a heart break, wow.
Yep, this isn't rocket science. It just comes down to giving a crap and paying attention. Unfortunately, there are no exams or certifications for this work so any high school drop out tweaker can get a license.
I had one of these nightmare contractors work on my home. It was supposed to be just a small job to fix a leak but the guy hosed it up so bad the leak was way worse after he was done. The leak was coming from a cantilevered deck and water was seeping into the wall. He didn't add dripmold or a door pan where the leak was upstairs as I asked him to. He said it was fine and guaranteed the leak was repaired. "lots of experience with leaks" he said. I had to have everything he did redone plus a lot more. I paid him about 1800.00 and it cost me another 12,000.00 to do the job correctly to fix the leak issue and fix his work. I'm glad it was only 1800.00 and not a lot more that I paid him. I ended up contacting 18 general contractors and finally found somebody really good who knew what they were doing or had the capability to do this job because it invoved siding, decking, sealing, framing, rot repair and sheet rock repair. The final result was perfect. Several contractors told me straight out they wouldn't tackle this kind of job and I appreciated their honesty. I wasn't trying to go cheap, I just didn't know the fix was so involved and so much had to be re-engineered and corrected. I learned a lot about the woes of cantilevered decks. Don't do them.
I suggest holding onto the numbers of some of those contractors who turned you down. Always ask those guys what kind of work they prefer, they could be a good honest future resource

I hope their contractor was legit , licensed and insured because all that tile needs to be pulled and redone, and so many major errors the job needs to be scrapped and basicly started over.... Poor people...
Don't be afraid to say you don't know, know your limits, don't take on too much, under promise and over deliver. Make sure you know how to estimate and include a profit.

Hard to get work cuz I don't have a fancy truck and logos. But I would never sleep if I had even one of these problems on my job

Im Native America Indian and have seen this crap on the Rez many times. I once held a position to to deal with these contractors. Its sad. Now days craftsmen are few and far between. Most dont know codes or even the steps before and after their craft takes place. I was taught to learn every step of the building progress.
This is why we use a plumber to do the plumbing use an electrician to do the electrical. He use in a cabinet maker to do the cabinets and you use a trim guy to do your trim and you specifically usually drywaller to do your drama and a painter to do the painting that’s why I’ve always told people like the person who says there a contractor use people who are specifically specifying for the application
Usually when a contractor is cheap, that's because he doesn't know the business and doesn't know how to charge. If he doesn't know the business there's a very high chance he doesn't know how to deliver quality. I'm a tile, bath remodeler and flooring contractor, when I first started, I was a hack and cheap. Now after years of experience I learned how to deliver high quality and my prices are way higher. People complain about my price and many hire cheap guys. You get what you pay for. 🤗

Absolutely. If the work is this shoddy on the exterior then the expenses are likely much much higher for repair then you initially realize. It's very likely that behind the drywall, in the attic and crawlspace there are a plethora of other issues that will need addressed. Usually those "behind the curtain" issues are far more serious.

I honestly believe you need to take a daily look at your home when contractors are working on huge jobs like this to make sure they are being respectful to your property. These guys are animals. I hope you fired them, cancelled whatever check you gave them and have plans on suing them for a full refund.
The only solution to this is to gut and redo. They may have to demo out more than the original ripout.. I would want to really look at plumbing AND electrical, structural, too, probably
Wife and I bought our house 15 years ago. After our recent divorce I finally decided to start renovating the place. I’ve got zero experience doing any of this and am doing it myself to save some money and the work I’ve done is far and away better than whatever the hell this contractor was trying to do.
Should I guess who initiated the divorce? Let me guess, she was "bored" or you didn't give her enough attention, it's always one of the two, in my experiences anyway.
I was repairing multiple honey-do items on a old home so the owners could sell it. As I adjusted the gate latch, to work properly, the real estate agent asked how much I charge. When I replied $60/hr, he balked and said “No way would I pay someone that much to do simple repairs like this”. My reply was, since I have all the tools and knowledge, it only took me 5 minutes to fix. That’s $5 to repair a malfunctioning gate. Pretty good deal if you ask me. I asked for his card, so I could remember to never work for him. The irony is, he charges quite a bit more than me and provides much less!

Mr Guzman I never minded people watching me work (floor covering installer). As far as payments go, 2 or three payments for a job are the norm. It helps keep everybody honest.

brent toevs You clearly didn't periodically visit the job site. You MUST do this to address things before they become major issues. The problems I see here didn't happen over night.
Alot of it is about money sadly. If you get hired to install a toilet, shower and vanity, then the client comes with "Hey can you do the hallway walls? Trim the bedroom, we want tile, we need qaurter round. We need all the holes patched, we need the beams cleaned, I see that you bought these lights and finished the wall but we have new lights, you'll have to take the drywall out, take mirrors down and redo the entire job" Then you're almost done basically remodeling an entire house with the budget of a toilet and vanity install, you're not going to spend the extra week to finish it. You can't because each week you have $2500 in payroll alone.. If they do not have the money for the job they shouldn't get the job done. It's alot of work to just do flooring. Remove toilet, vanity, trim. Qaurter round, rip out wood flooring, sand and scrape floor surface, level floor, sand floor perfectly smooth. Install flooring. Then imagine someone changing the flooring type after that. An entire week scheduled to do all of this. Then to have the client change their minds on flooring. An entire week with a laborer, thegn demo and do again. Then realize the job is a "favor" alot of times that is the other side of the story. So you have weeks or a month or 2 of out of pocket labor for things you did as "favors" then have the client text you "I'm disappointed" Thats why shit is expensive.
As a Licensed Contractor, all I can say is hire local and get references, lots of references. If a contractor is really good, he will have references from previous clients who are happy to show off their home improvements and renovations. You can also check to see if a prospective contractor is licensed, and that his license is in good standing. you can also check to see if the state has ever had to suspend or revoke a license. And never pull a permit for a contractor. If he is unwilling or unable to get the permit himself, it's usually because he knows his work won't pass inspection.
As a contractor specializing in renovations and damage repair..for over 40 years…it beyond understanding that inspections by the client permit this level of unprofessionalism…anyone using a professional service should and I repeat should require a bond for and level of work preformed…it protects the client f e.g. I’m a variety of ills…and really no litigation is typically involved..!
Now you know why we need more Construction Union Apprenticeships. Untrained, unskilled, low bid, jacklegs cost you so much more than skilled trades people.

Man I’ve done work like that before drunk off my ass / hungover / both and it never would look like that. At least nobody fired me or complained to my face haha. Long time ago. I do that work sober now, aside from the occasional joint before painting all day.
My experience has been you get a contractor you trust. And even then some things might not be done right, but at least a good contractor will fix their mistakes. Not only did this contractor hire unskilled and ignorant workers, he never looked at what they were doing himself.
When you first deal with a contractor, take a photo of his driver's license, contractors license and insurance. If he doesn't allow you, don't do business with him. Also, get a contract. If anything goes wrong, go to your county court and tell the clerk you want to file a small claim against a contractor and they'll give you the forms. It's easy to do. I did it myself.
One has to be delicate when asking for that info, a lot of times it will scare off a good gc in fear of a karen/ken homeowner, this is why my lic and info is all on my trucks, nobody has to ask.
Definitely don’t turn the water on in the shower before a professional tile setter takes a look at that shower pan. If the tile was that bad I can’t imagine the pan being correct😳
If you hire anyone to do work on your property, YOU ALWAYS STAY ON TOP of them, don't disappear and think you won't be surprised. I hired a contractor to do a $300K+ remodel and we butted heads for the first couple of weeks, after that realized who was the BOSS with the checkbook, this is your fault for not protecting your interests more vigorously!
That's a shame. As a quality contractor I am not cheap, as I tell all of my customers if they want it cheap it will look cheap. My guess here is that these people went with a low bidder. You always get what you pay for and don't pay for. One way or the other you're going to pay for quality. Better luck next time. Contractors choosing the lowest bid will get you this, 100%. They hire guys that were picking cherries the week before. You know what I’m saying. Skilled labor isn’t cheap, and cheap labor isn’t skilled.
It is wrong to assume that this couple took the lowest bid. Just because you accept the highest bid does not mean you will get great results. I notice that most contractors price the neighborhood instead the actual job. Good contractors are hard to come by in the 21st century. That's why I do everything except for HVAC and Electrical. My husband and I could have been in the same boat as this couple when we decided to renovate. I would like to see an update on the outcome.

A friend of mine who was a roofing contractor in California always used to say to prospective clients, "The low bid is not necessarily your friend."

I said no, this is my first house and I am very proud. I will not take short cuts or deal with something thats not 100% the way I want it. Boy was that a mistake! I shot for the highest bid who had great reviews. Ive been paying on that loan for the past 6yrs and will be paying on it another 6yrs. meanwhile the lowest bidding guy who fixed it all. I paid him off cash. And im stuck with this bullshit loan paying on something I dont even have.
That’s no excuse for crappy work. Laws need to be changed to help home owners with crap like this. Right now the law says if the contractor made an attempt then they are not liable.

No, when you hire a general contractor who subs the work then he needs to be there everyday. The homeowners are never to blame when work like this is performed after signing a legally binding contract.
So where was the owner of this project throughout the whole process? Every time I do a job the owner comes by and checks up on the progress made.

Im Native America Indian and have seen this crap on the Rez many times. I once held a position to to deal with these contractors. Its sad. Now days craftsmen are few and far between. Most dont know codes or even the steps before and after their craft takes place. I was taught to learn every step of the building progress.
This is why we use a plumber to do the plumbing use an electrician to do the electrical. He use in a cabinet maker to do the cabinets and you use a trim guy to do your trim and you specifically usually drywaller to do your drama and a painter to do the painting that’s why I’ve always told people like the person who says there a contractor use people who are specifically specifying for the application

Usually when a contractor is cheap, that's because he doesn't know the business and doesn't know how to charge. If he doesn't know the business there's a very high chance he doesn't know how to deliver quality. I'm a tile, bath remodeler and flooring contractor, when I first started, I was a hack and cheap. Now after years of experience I learned how to deliver high quality and my prices are way higher. People complain about my price and many hire cheap guys. You get what you pay for. 🤗

Absolutely. If the work is this shoddy on the exterior then the expenses are likely much much higher for repair then you initially realize. It's very likely that behind the drywall, in the attic and crawlspace there are a plethora of other issues that will need addressed. Usually those "behind the curtain" issues are far more serious.
Geez oh man these guys are terrible. I honestly believe you need to take a daily look at your home when contractors are working on huge jobs like this to make sure they are being respectful to your property. These guys are animals. I hope you fired them, cancelled whatever check you gave them and have plans on suing them for a full refund.
The only solution to this is to gut and redo. They may have to demo out more than the original ripout.. I would want to really look at plumbing AND electrical, structural, too, probably
Wife and I bought our house 15 years ago. After our recent divorce I finally decided to start renovating the place. I’ve got zero experience doing any of this and am doing it myself to save some money and the work I’ve done is far and away better than whatever the hell this contractor was trying to do.
Should I guess who initiated the divorce? Let me guess, she was "bored" or you didn't give her enough attention, it's always one of the two, in my experiences anyway.
I was repairing multiple honey-do items on a old home so the owners could sell it.
As I adjusted the gate latch, to work properly, the real estate agent asked how much I charge. When I replied $60/hr, he balked and said “No way would I pay someone that much to do simple repairs like this”.
My reply was, since I have all the tools and knowledge, it only took me 5 minutes to fix. That’s $5 to repair a malfunctioning gate. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
I asked for his card, so I could remember to never work for him.
The irony is, he charges quite a bit more than me and provides much less!
He's a lot more calm than I would be. Somebody's head would have some bumps on it if that was my house.

Alot of it is about money sadly. If you get hired to install a toilet, shower and vanity, then the client comes with
"Hey can you do the hallway walls? Trim the bedroom, we want tile, we need qaurter round. We need all the holes patched, we need the beams cleaned, I see that you bought these lights and finished the wall but we have new lights, you'll have to take the drywall out, take mirrors down and redo the entire job"
Then you're almost done basically remodeling an entire house with the budget of a toilet and vanity install, you're not going to spend the extra week to finish it. You can't because each week you have $2500 in payroll alone.. If they do not have the money for the job they shouldn't get the job done.
It's alot of work to just do flooring.
Remove toilet, vanity, trim. Qaurter round, rip out wood flooring, sand and scrape floor surface, level floor, sand floor perfectly smooth. Install flooring. Then imagine someone changing the flooring type after that. An entire week scheduled to do all of this. Then to have the client change their minds on flooring. An entire week with a laborer, thegn demo and do again. Then realize the job is a "favor"
alot of times that is the other side of the story. So you have weeks or a month or 2 of out of pocket labor for things you did as "favors" then have the client text you "I'm disappointed"

As a Licensed Contractor, all I can say is hire local and get references, lots of references. If a contractor is really good, he will have references from previous clients who are happy to show off their home improvements and renovations.
You can also check to see if a prospective contractor is licensed, and that his license is in good standing. you can also check to see if the state has ever had to suspend or revoke a license.
And never pull a permit for a contractor. If he is unwilling or unable to get the permit himself, it's usually because he knows his work won't pass inspection.
The contractor just hasn’t finish it up. Give him some time. 😂😅
As a contractor specializing in renovations and damage repair..for over 40 years…it beyond understanding that inspections by the client permit this level of unprofessionalism…anyone using a professional service should and I repeat should require a bond for and level of work preformed…it protects the client f e.g. I’m a variety of ills…and really no litigation is typically involved..!

My experience has been you get a contractor you trust. And even then some things might not be done right, but at least a good contractor will fix their mistakes. Not only did this contractor hire unskilled and ignorant workers, he never looked at what they were doing himself.
When you first deal with a contractor, take a photo of his driver's license, contractors license and insurance. If he doesn't allow you, don't do business with him. Also, get a contract. If anything goes wrong, go to your county court and tell the clerk you want to file a small claim against a contractor and they'll give you the forms. It's easy to do. I did it myself.
One has to be delicate when asking for that info, a lot of times it will scare off a good gc in fear of a karen/ken homeowner, this is why my lic and info is all on my trucks, nobody has to ask.

If you hire anyone to do work on your property, YOU ALWAYS STAY ON TOP of them, don't disappear and think you won't be surprised. I hired a contractor to do a $300K+ remodel and we butted heads for the first couple of weeks, after that realized who was the BOSS with the checkbook, this is your fault for not protecting your interests more vigorously!

That's a shame. As a quality contractor I am not cheap, as I tell all of my customers if they want it cheap it will look cheap. My guess here is that these people went with a low bidder. You always get what you pay for and don't pay for. One way or the other you're going to pay for quality. Better luck next time. People wonder why I bid my work at $50 per hour, $35 goes to me for labor and the other $15 goes to me for quality assurance insurance!

It is wrong to assume that this couple took the lowest bid. Just because you accept the highest bid does not mean you will get great results. I notice that most contractors price the neighborhood instead the actual job.
Good contractors are hard to come by in the 21st century. That's why I do everything except for HVAC and Electrical. My husband and I could have been in the same boat as this couple when we decided to renovate.
