The drywall up in that formerly attic area also goes all the way up to the apex of the roof. Typically you want to leave a little air space up there to allow for ventilation. That is the most common thing people get wrong when converting attic space to living space. It's a tricky balance to get the insulation and ventilation right between the drywall, roof as well as between the rafters.
Absolutely correct, unless you run ridge vent on the roof. But that then requires roof work, if your relying on existing roof vents then leaving space at the top is key.

At 1:38 that window on the stairway landing is DEFINITELY not allowed and is an accident waiting to happen, especially knowing children are in the house! The contractor should have removed it, filled in the space with wall. However, at 1:30 the staircase width, etc. Generally indoor stairs must meet certain conditions per code, though it's not so unusual for variances to be asked for, allowed when redoing an older house...often some compromises need to be made when doing these sort of projects in older houses. Depends on the particular place, project etc.

It’s your responsibility to check and verify the companies you hire to work on or in your homes are indeed licensed and that the insurance they carry is valid. This is all a distraction - these guys are not Masons so they take them down on TV. THese vultures are shameless - and I agree NO one should be ripping anyone off but you have to zoom back to see the bigger picture here what they are doing with this propaganda in reality.
boo hoo call the feds
Haha, who TF are you even talking too bozo? @twerktospec 🤡
I dont even live in Detroit im in South Carolinai come here just for this guy. I agree he need his own show.
Kevin needs to go to jail.Thank you for the information and video.
Agree! 🗽🇺🇸👍
That garage door is all you need to know about his skills as a contractor
Ohhh man how i miss these segments fox 2's problem solvers hall of shame was always on point.
what happened to it
The drywall up in that formerly attic area also goes all the way up to the apex of the roof.
She got what she paid for. A knowledgeable contractor would have charged for all that. He didn’t. She took the lowball offer.
@@emmasdad5426 I run into that a lot. I'm reasonably priced, yet people will take this ridiculous low-ball bids because they think construction is monkey work. I usually end up making more by going back and fixing the other guys' work, than what I would have made just doing the job in the first place. I've had to start telling customers this during my bid, just so it doesn't eat at my conscience. Some listen. Most don't.
@emmasdad5426 yeah your right.... They expected the Taj mahal in an attic space....All for $7K ...shocking
Yeah, dude was an idiot but she seems out to lunch. She has a small kid and another on the way and where is the father or fathers. I'm sure someone is going to come to her defense and call me an asshole but I honestly don't care. She is compounding irresponsible life decisions.
That wall over the baseboard is insane.
Rob always catches them lackin' lol.... 😂😂😂
I'm from Arizona an I love watching this dude... he's one cool cat... buy this man some greens
Notice how he closed the garage door, because all that stuff is stolen💯
As he stands in front of his work....That jacked up garage!!!
He does construction but that garage door says it all.
Never seen straight dub low headroom before. They had to install it because the "Contractor" doesn't know how to frame a lean to garage.
Cool that they got a shot of the horizontal tracks.
Imagine if these news people would scrutinize politicians as much as they do the public how much better this country would be.
Kevin Cupp, you are a monster.
To fix the mess would cost more money than she paid to him. SHAME SHAME SHAME MR CUPP
The fire fighter cant fit thru a window 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have been in the construction and remodeling business for over 30 years and have noticed in the last 5 years all these sketchy contractor types popping up and doing the most horrible work and charging some outrages prices for it, some are not even doing anything more than taking a down payment and never coming back, thankfully the attorney general has taken to having these guys arrested for they're bad behavior and making them the money back.
When no good people are taking trade jobs who do you think will handle them. I'm a IT person but i will encourage my son to do trades ,there is a lot of work for honest people
I think it’s happened in most businesses that make substantial sums of money.I tattoo for a living and this has gotten really bad in the last decade and just keeps getting worse.I feel for everybody.
Most of these sketch guys spend 20 minutes at a Home Depot Saturday morning class and call themselves Contractors.
Dude immediately closed the garage door. He definitely hiding something in there.
This is like the most entertaining news channel I've ever seen! Like your producers need an Emmy or something. The music, narraration & all. I'm hooked 🤣🤣🤣
I love this news anchor so much, so fucking funny while calling people out, love it!
Whos pays professionals through cashapp? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡💩
I actually pay my mechanic that way and he’s the best mechanic I’ve had in my life.
💯 They should at least have Quickbooks
Man the guy talks like Ricky from Trailer Park Boys
We need more journalists like this dude. he's awesome
Hey CUPP , I like your paper towel holder garage door handle
This
story is the epitome of Detroit. It is always somebody else's fault
crazy, i was working 3 months in netherlands as finiher, builder, etc, we never left a project without finishing it 100Z% to being literally perfect, crazy
She should have hired an Architect to define what was to be built and to what codes, essentially a proper contract between Owner and Contractor.
As much of the blame goes to her
Omg that's horrible
He should refund her money or fix it right!
He needs to do both just to get her back to square one. It's his fault her house is messed up and he deserves no money at all.
They should have cps called immediately for keeping her kids in that house immediately !!!!
I can see where she trusted this Kevin guy, because her cousin worked for him and possibly the cousin coerced her into hiring him or gave her false sense of security in the matter but it seems to me that the cousin must be corrupt as well. Like hanging out with kevin. Kevin looks like he's on drugs and perhaps her cousin is as well. If the cousin works for Kevin and knows how to do this type of work, I'm curious as to why didn't she just hire the cousin?
What about him appears on drugs?
So I was thinking something kinda similar but you completely lost me with your comment about the drugs. First of all stereotyping people is messed up and the even bigger more messed up mistake is saying it like drugs are a bad thing and or people must be bad because they use drugs. ( Legal or not !!!)
The evil people that filled guiliable folk with this propaganda bullshit and the war on drugs are the real criminals. Nixon, Ronald/Nancy reagon and their band of misfits should have been strapped up , hung, drawn , and quartered on street lights for the rest of us civilized people to throw rocks at their dead carcasses as a warning to what happens to bad people. I hope the devil, Hitler, and a bunch of hell's hounds gangrape them daily after their time here on earth. Just filthy rotten bad people to come up with this sham war on drugs and mass incarceration that fuels big prison business. Absolutely horrific and evil!!! And anyone that believes the war on drugs is good is just as guiliable and dull as a box of rocks.
Her cousin worked for him but likely was a beginner. Adding a second story to a house requires lots of knowledge and experience. She figured the company that claimed to be in business twenty years would be able to do it.
@@beakt I think they are all in on it. They did a shitty job to be aired in hopes that some company wanting to advertise their work and how compassionate they are through tv. And that they would come to the rescue and give them a phat ass remodel job. 😂
@ExquisiteTouch.M.M.P I doubt some lady is gonna put her kid in the living room and have no place to put a crying newborn then have contractors in and out while pregnant to get a free job done.
check the garage for stolen goods, he closed that door as soon as he saw the camera roll up
What a bum contractor unfortunately there's many more out there like that and they're starting to come out of the woodwork. I've been in construction 35 years most the knowledgeable guys are retired only a handful of good honest guys left out here.
every city should have one of these
That’s just horrible. This guys a real piece of……work? Hopefully people will see this before they hire this scumbag and he’ll have to go out of business. Not the home repair business. I mean the scamming honest people business.
His brother Cooper is a hell of a guy
At 1:38 that window on the stairway landing is DEFINITELY not allowed and is an accident waiting to happen, especially knowing children are in the house! The contractor should have removed it, filled in the space with wall.
However, at 1:30 the staircase width, etc. Generally indoor stairs must meet certain conditions per code, though it's not so unusual for variances to be asked for, allowed when redoing an older house...often some compromises need to be made when doing these sort of projects in older houses. Depends on the particular place, project etc.
A Variance is for Zoning request . Stairs and windows are gor egress and no one is gonna sign that off.
This man is stealing money.
Let me guess, he isn’t licensed.
Gee ya think? You didn't see the story?
He's been listening to Shaggy too much "It wasn't me"
Anyone notice how the guys garage door is fu#ked up ?
Smh it's guys like him that make it hard for legitimate handymen to get work.
I feel bad for her and her son, she should take them to court.
It costs a lot of money to take someone to court
If you giving anyone more than $100 you should do a background check!
"You can pay me through cashapp."
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
thats what customers get when they hire the cheaper contractor lmfao
You know her husband is living in hell considering he referred this company and used to work for them. I also feel like there is some truth to his side of the story. Yeah the owner showed up twice but looking at the work it would take a lot of time to do that work not just two different days. Maybe the family did try to help and cut costs and ended up screwing everything up.
Great reporting
That didn't seem too bad for $5,000. She didn't want to pay $25,000 in the first place that's why she went with him. It wasn't that bad.
He didn't have permits and it wasn't up to code...what are you saying Benny boy?
Literally everything was improperly designed to incorporate numerous considerable safety hazards.
Exactly. Barely paid more than cost of materials, didnt draw up any plans, cut corners, now its oh poor me
You can tell the quality work he does by the garage door handle.
To add a upstairs it would have cost 25 to 30 grand to begin with
Exactly. Am I the only one who thinks “you got what you paid for”?
Job was not paid in full nor done.
@@Bobbbybags thats what i thought
MORAL OF THE STORY, NEVER NEVER NEVER DO BUSINESS UNLESS SAID BUSINESS IS IN GOOD STANDING WITH BBB.
She was probably too cheap to have it done right. Pays $5k for a job that should have cost $20k.
Job was not paid in full or done.
There was a balance due upon completion and that does not account or include any of the materials that I purchased that have to be torn down.
@@ericasuominen4118 who is brian?
Erica, if your family members husband work for him, was he aware of his business practices?
Now I know what to look for when I get I contractor thanks guys.
There should be laws against "contractors" claiming to be licensed or insured and they're not. It should have been the homeowners responsibility to verify but not everyone does. It's a shame people think they can take hardworking folks money and leave them up in arms with shitty work.
There is laws.
There is, it's just hard to enforce. In California, it's actually a felony to misrepresent yourself as licensed.
Exactly, and it is the Homeowners Right to Proof of Current Insurance and Builders Liceses. Do your homework people. And Do NOT hire Craigslist Meth Heads.
My ex hired a contractor to do her driveway. Tore it all up and went on vacation for months. I kept telling her you have to pay for quality work from trusted companies. I reccomend a friend of my dad's and they put it in in less than a week. It looks perfect.
Wow, just wow. I learned to build in Michigan and this is not the work of a real contractor. Michigan needs to crack down on these faulty "builders". This is inexcusable.
How much would you charge for all that work done right? $8,000?
We need Hall of Shame in Huntsville, AL lololol
THIS CONTRACTOR HAS BEEN TRASH ALL HIS LIFE!!!!!!!!!!
This is why references, and also wanting to see actual work that has been done by the people you hire is so important.
Dirtbag
My boy got the slim shady hat…. U know he’s smokin crack
I cannot sit here and feel sorry or bad for homeowners who don’t do their due diligence and just openly trust people. It’s your responsibility to check and verify the companies you hire to work on or in your homes are indeed licensed and that the insurance they carry is valid. It’s also your responsibility to make sure these companies have filed the proper permits and have been given the okay to do the work through the city you reside in.
Don’t victim blame. She didn’t do anything wrong. This was his fault.
@@ejboatright I hope you understand how the real world works one day. It is indeed your responsibility to ensure the company you hire to do the work is licensed, bonded, and insured. 🙄 It takes less than a minute to ask “may I see your paperwork to verify that you’re licensed, bonded, and insured?” If the company starts making up excuses or beats around the bush, then just start calling around to find a different company to get the job done legally and properly. There’s no “victim blaming” when it comes to facts and due diligence. I can only imagine this going in front of a judge and watching them state the same exact things that I just have.
@@themandwellaeffect1970the judge will still side with the victim. I can only imagine what you say to family of murder victims.
@@vincentlucario5450 🤣😂🤣 That’s hilarious how you’re comparing two extremely different situations. On a side note, the judge will not side with the victim on this and I bet my life savings on it. I know how the laws work here in Michigan and it’s clear to see you obviously do not. You go on and have the day you deserve now. 😉👌
@@themandwellaeffect1970 yeah, I can’t take you seriously with that many emojis.
How come taking peoples money to do work and then not doing the job is not a crime. its sort of a form of theft.
Before you start feeling bad guys she only paid $8,300 for this well over 5,000 material regardless feels done right or wrong if I as a licensed contractor did this I would charge $70,000
Lol these people don't understand that. Idiot want the taj mahal got the price of a crack house....you get what you pay for.
Always ask to see the permits, ask for prior recent work references in the area and go talk with them and ask for evidence of filing and approval with the city before inspections
The MOST shocking element to this story is that it was a family members referral!!! Contractor scams are all over the place these days.
God bless honest hard working contractors and the reporter exposing this crook.
I have a neighbor who paid $40K for a kitchen makeover. It took 8 months to complete with all kinds of excuses. I don't feel sorry for her, she trusted the company and didn't get enough bids. Don't trust anyone. Way too many hustlers out there!!
Hello that 8k for that work something 🐟
honestley who cares u seem more upset than the buyer? are you mad you dont have 40k to spend or are you mad hustlers are out trying to hustle? over here venting on youtube about ur neighbors kitchen lol
@@wiifii5.071 Right. I would've got their asses too 😬😅
Why you bringing up your neighbors plight? What does this story have to do with your neighbor? Make your own UA-cam video and share your neighbors' story, then it will be all about YOU!
Kitchen remodels take a lot of planning, time, effort and money. You didn't say that it wasn't completed well You just said it took 8 months. I have clients that ordered cabinets 8 months ago who still don't have them now! To do things right it can take time.
There's that old adage asking if you want it fast or do you want it good?
Hall of shame is my favorite!
Take your second loan, hire an attorney and sue his ass just like all the rest of normal people.
I own a gutter company here in San Antonio, and I can't tell you the amount of gutter jobs I have seen that were done all wrongly and not up code where the fascia board and rafters are getting rotted cuz of badly installed gutter :/ , in some cases, the water isn't even flowing towards the downspouts and some of these homeowners even got overcharged for crappy work
She kinda cute tho
She's my aunt
Thanks for those videos
Homeowners go with the lowest bidder. And complain about what it cost to pay someone competent to complete the work.
Just look at kevens garage door. That says it all
She screwed herself calling the city smh
Seriously. The city will not help her and will just fine the crap out of her.
He said FIRE TRAP CHIC LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣
Her husband worked for the company… um
Her cousins husband
Her cousin's husband
I hope that she is compensated not only for her money, but for her time also. And stress.. she is supposed to be able to relax and the work done correctly. That’s bad karma on his part. There seems like more of those kinds of people out there than good. There are still good ones out there though.
You get wat you pay for... try to save money and that's wat usually happens... gotta get someone licensed and bonded with insurance so u not begging a fraudster for money you can sue a big company and end up with new house money
Honestly as a customer this is the expectation not the exception. I try to give as little cash upfront. I've purchased all construction materials together with contractors so I can give a smaller deposit. I always make sure I owe enough money to make it worthwhile for them to continue. I've had some garbage work done and it wasn't for a small amount. At some point I learned to do small projects myself. I built a deck with city permits because I didn't want the cost or stress of hiring. The inspector pointed out that a contractor would have never done it as well as I did. The good contractors all want to work on mansions with big budgets.
To be fair he said he showed up like twice and then there’s only the two ring camera feeds…. Why couldn’t they of kept their mouths shut about all that permit crap then it would’ve been fine
let's be honest it looks like shit
You're kidding right? Nothing is up to code, she could never sell the house. I doubt you could even get furniture up those stairs. It ain't a treehouse.
@@farmerbill6855 True dat, but atleast the dude did some work unlike some of the other contractors that are in the hall of shame that just take the money and run
She'd have been better off if he hadn't done anything. Now she has to pay to have it all torn out then put it back together right.
That what you should expect when you pay someone $5,000 to do a job that should cost $30,000 though.
Guess what buddy. It's your company the guy works for you. So that means you are responsible for the work that is being put out under your companies name.
