    Using a lathe to cut threads for a simple bolt is the biggest flex ever. Like, "yeah we could go to the hardware store BUT we have this piece of rusty round stock... so no need". Awesome work.

    I've no major interest in design, invention or fabrication but I do like and appreciate interesting videos where people invent, design and fabricate stuff and the processes of things coming together is seen.
    I've just got one of those minds that cam appreciate things on so many levels by analysing it for the sum of its parts and then the sprinkling of magic that got it in the end.
    Keep up the good work!

    Great builds, as always. I agree with the earlier comment about this channel really evolving over time. Y'all have great editing, with a background soundtrack, but real shop sounds. Great action shots, though I wish a few had longer dwell. This is my favorite old-school machine shop channel.
    Oh, and how about adding an expanded-mesh guard around that belt/pully setup. Could catch another cord and wrap it or hurt someone.

    Nice, easy to adapt. Making a bigger vertical reservoir, you'd just have to make a box with an open top end, the bottom flat and a little wider to accommodate bolt holes for either feet, or stationary placement. #13 SAE drain in the front, site glass holes near the top on the front panel. smaller corner gussets inside near the top of the tank with 3/8" bolt holes to bolt the top down but also enough room for U-Channel gasket to fit over the top edge, The lid on top. I'd reckon 10-12 GAL reservoir I think. 3 of the sides bent at 90 from each other, the front and bottom welded together with the bent piece.
    I used to work in the hydraulics industry, building similar vertical reservoirs. Those vertical types, I used to hydro-static test, paint, and ship them daily. All over the world. Many different custom, stock tanks. It was a fun, but dirty job! Tanks were either pressure tested, hydro-static tested, DPI, some even XRayed.

  • @phlodel

    This is great apart from the fact that you have the pump and engine on a platform seperated by rubber bushes, but then directly attach the hydraulic valve to the pump from the non isolated section. Those two will experience different movements and will crack off pretty quickly.

  • @mtcruse
    @mtcruse 5 років тому

    Awesome work! I'd suggest adding either a heavy flywheel to the engine, or making a pulley for the engine with a large, heavy flange on it - this way you add mass for inertia to that lawnmower engine that no longer has the benefit of a steel blade to add that inertia. Your engine will run better for it.

  • @richb313
    @richb313 5 років тому +2

    Fantastic build video and loved how you fabricated the tank. Just one question. Did you calculate the minimum size of the reservoir needed for this type of hydraulic system? It seems just a little undersized which will lead to over heating of the oil in any heavy application. A spin off filter on the return to tank would not be a bad idea either but both are things that can be addressed if needed in the future.

    • @jamesgulrich7416
      @jamesgulrich7416 5 років тому +1

      I liked the whole build except the tank. Pumps and motors are close tolerance machines. Building a tank out of that nasty galvanized tube and having no way to really clean the tank out after welding, yeah. Not for me. Use the cleanest metal you can find when building hydraulic tanks and a spin-off filter is an excellent idea. However, filters add restriction and restrictions build heat. The tank would have to be doubled or even tripled if ran for more than a few minutes.

      You need to be building or buying basic machine tools, a knee mill has been a standard of industry since the 1920's. I fully understand how tight finances are but it's tough to make projects like this when your fabrication tools are 100 years behind the curve.
