I love the secret lyrics, the historic printed in each melody, music like this isn't for everyone... this will stay forever in history,,,,, thanks for this soul .... I hope all the best for you and your patch, from Brazil ....
She played at New York's Metropolitan Museum last night. Astounding! There is nothing she can't sing. I'll never miss one of her concerts going foward.
OMFG!!! Where has this woman been? I just watched her on a PBS show on craft workers. musical instruments and building them. She does Elizabeth Cotton proud.
Agree with Arvin - some verses missing in this performance, compared to Elizabeth Cotten's granddaughter singing on her (Elizabeth's) version. That aside - this is beautiful .....................
A guess. Elizabeth Cotton and Brenda Evans recorded two nearly identical versions of this song. One had, in the "Got a little secret" verse ". . . I'm gonna heaven in a brown pea shell." The second had ". . . I'm gonna heaven and I ain't gonna . . . ." My guess is that Rhiannon Giddens sang both verses, back to back, skipping a verse to do so, as a nod to that difference.
