I just discovered Rhiannon Giddens and her music. It reminds me of how little I know about this nation of 330 million. I was born and raised in NYC but spent most of my adult years traveling the globe in the military and State Department. I retired in NC and never heard of her. She is absolutely wonderful. I’m going to buy all her music for my listening pleasure. It’s a reminder that the noise around me is a distraction, while everyday people never get the attention they deserve. Keep up the good work. The nation needs you.

We first discovered Rhiannon when she was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Merlefest about a decade ago. Besides having a voice for the ages, she is a fine instrumentalist. She has dug deep into the American tradition, and, for those of us who love traditional music, she is a treasure. But that's not all she does. Check out her duet with Paul Simon on his American Tune. It is as good as music gets.

Because of Beth Gibbons I’ve uncovered an array of vocal goddesses; I even listen to music which I don’t understand a single lyric, such as music by Japanese Folk vocalist Ikue Asazaki. I’m so glad that I found Giddens while trying to find ol’ Blues artists similar to the magnificent Blind Willie Johnson. *Rhianna is only bringing E.C's music to those who need a "beautiful" golden girl to perform it for them to stop and take notice....to value it. My point was that this VISUAL BIAS (and race bias) is still lingering after all these decade since E. Cotten died. People like you don't do this to Black men anymore, but you keep waiting for someone who looks like Scarlett Johansen to sing like Aretha. Or a bronze colored Barbie to sing like Nina Simone.... when it should be about the MUSIC.

Hi Singular Man: I'm glad Spotify & UA-cam turned you on to her; I also first heard her on UA-cam. However, only the mega-pop stars make any more than mere pennies on Spotify. If you can afford it go buy her CDs or downloads and support the artists you love. Spotify is terrible for any but the biggest artists.

I came home from work Saturday night, turned on the TV to MPT and stopped when I heard her singing. I was done for the evening, foot tapping, couldn't stop or turn away. When she sang "Come Love Come, I was finished, how did I miss this earthly angel. Absolutely incredible. Where have I been?

“The phrase 'shake sugaree' "means having a good time and is related to throwing sugar on the floor and then dancing on it, producing a percussive sound when the feet move on the sugared floor" and lest one believe I’m not impressed beyond anything by Rihanna’s rendition, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Maybe four months ago, a 240p video of an old-timey group performing at a radio station, appeared in my recommended feed. Since then I've been working through Rhiannon Giddens output, as well as the Carolina Chocolate Drops. How did I get to 2018 having never heard of this incredible musician, Rhiannon Giddens. The other "Drops" ain't too shabby here, either.

If only the BRILLIANT Elizabeth Cotten had been a biracial woman. Maybe she wouldn't have had to be a maid " discovered " by her white employers. Maybe she would have gotten her due before she was a senior citizen. Same for all the other Negro female folk, blues, and country singers Rhiannon borrows from.
Sad. So much talent and human potential is lost in this old Beauty and color Content.

Do you realize that this is a message board?
      * Also, my comment to him was CORRECT. Elizabeth Cotten's race and skin color made her less valuable for her talents than women who are white or partly so. That is WRONG! It's no better than only liking rock& roll because ELVIS did it (and I like Elvis).
