Incredible. I didn't even notice that I'm doing this, but as soon as I started to go into this a bit deeper, I started noticing, how when my mind is racing with vivid thoughts, I immediately press my tongue to the roof of my mouth, as if pulled by magnets! I realize, that it's become a habit, and the good news about that is, that one can change their habits.
I'm in no way abandoning the way of the roof-tongue, for it has its uses, but when I don't need it, I'll instead learn to switch into a different mode. Thanks for clearing it up!

Having my tongue anywhere other than the top of my mouth is possibly the most uncomfortable and least relaxing thing I’ve done😭😭 I think there’s something wrong with me

I won't claim to be an expert in somatic yoga; that said, my understanding is that there are many different tongue postures in the practice, and I don't believe this is a tongue posture that should be practiced all day every day. I have attempted to corroborate the teaching here with other sources (e.g., sources that explicitly explain the position as one to be used all the time, and many simply don't explicitly describe how the tongue is relaxed at all), but haven't had success yet. Again, I am not an expert, but below is what I have found - so far - supported across many sources.
Recently, I learned that I had bad tongue posture. It caused tons of bad habits to develop in my body, and likely contributed to how my cranium shaped itself as I aged. I discovered this primarily in my attempt to figure out why I increasingly have the constant sensation of phlegm, leading to chronic swallowing that I can't control. It keeps me awake and exhausts my throat and tongue muscles.
I came across tongue posture during my search for solutions. Seemed like a good one to practice before I go to a medical professional for help. I have poured over article after article, including medical, martial arts, meditative practices, on top of more casual sources. They all point to this: Tongue to roof of mouth (completely, not just the tip).
Holding the tongue to the roof of the mouth is taught by many people - including dentists and practitioners of Tai Chi, Qigong etc.
Here is a video that illustrates what happens to the cranial structure: ua-cam.com/video/3h0JgmmLj_Q/v-deo.html
There is a trick to it that allows you to relax. It has to do with finding the right spot and allowing suction to hold your tongue in place (you do not "press" the tongue up). This allows you to relax the muscle and aligns your jaw, throat, nasal passage etc in an ideal arrangement for nose breathing. The description that helped me learn the right spot was "smile a big, cheesy smile, swallow, and feel where your tongue slides back and stops"...this was the ideal positioning for me.
I'm not the best at it. It takes practice over time like any muscle. And no matter where your tongue is, it works best when paired with good body posture (upright, diaphragm breathing, etc). But even in my first, probably-not-great go at it, I immediately felt the beginnings of those benefits, including the ability to halt that particularly-bad incident of constant swallowing that was keeping me awake.

@@rebeccalang5913 You right, tongue relax only on the ruff of the mouth, there where it block air getting in the mouth. The breath flow easily, so the thought.

@@rebeccalang5913 Thank you for your comprehensive comment. Your issues are the same as mine. Phlegm (recently felt I choked in my sleep also) and facial developmental issues. I have tried for years to expand my upper jaw so that my tongue can fit there better and enable good tongue posture. This has been a journey for many years for me, with expanders and braces to widen my narrow jaw. Eight years have passed since I started this process. I've had improvements but this has taken far longer and resulted in less than I'd hoped. It's also hard to maintain good tongue posture when you always have something in your upper palate that's in the way for the tongue.
What I've learned about tongue posture is the same as you, so this video confused me a bit. Very good suggestion you had for relaxing the tongue while it remains in the upper palate. It's hard to do when it's narrow there though.
I have a problem with fatigue I'm thinking of trying to solve with meditation. I hope my tongue posture won't screw it up though. I wonder if I can really relax my tongue in my upper palate since I think I need to apply pressure there constantly to keep it there.
