Thank goodness for your video! I took my machine apart (didn’t touch anything), just to wipe up the grease, put it back and it stopped working. I’m so glad I found your video about the brushes having a different corner. I almost had a heart attack when it didn’t start at first, turns out I had the brushes in wrong. Thanks!!
Very happy it helped you♡
daryl turcott do you know about the oil level in a Kitchen Aide. Daughter had movers mover hers. We marked all over the box “ This end up and Do not tilt”. Of course upon delivery it was setting upside down. Box soaked in oil. Ran a couple of times after but now won’t run. Very sparingly used.
I can’t see a cutout when I shine a light in there. Must be my 59 yo eyes! Any advice about the direction of the brushes? Should the “top” be on top when I put it in?
Omg! I did the same! I took mine apart while watching a video how to do so. I removed the old grease and put in new, put it together and it didn’t work anymore. Gonna try this and hope it works
I had the same exact thing Thank you for your video
Bought one of these on FB marketplace for $100 last week. Powered it up, it worked just fine. Was cleaning the gunk out of the nooks and crannies, including around those screws. Removed one because it was super gunky. After a thorough cleaning, I powered it up and got absolutely nothing…I almost died on the spot. Gathered myself, started searching for a solution online and found this video. IT WORKED!! Never touching that darn screw ever again!!
Glad it helped.
I AM A BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT AND YOU SAVED MY DAY. I love to bake to get my mind off of crazier things and my mother was kind enough to pass down her mixed when she got a new one. It would not start about a month ago and now it is up and running again thanks to you. Thank you thank you.
So few servicing tutorials online mention to check the brushes. I had no idea what those were and I had apparently reinserted it wrong, so my wife's mixer wouldn't start. You helped me fix it in 30 seconds. Thank you!
Thank you so much for recording this information! I had inserted the brushes wrong on my mixer and was about to decide that the motor was shot. You saved me a lot of time and effort. Again, thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video! I took my mixer apart to paint it a different color and it wouldn’t turn on when I reassembled it. I thought for sure I must have broken it. The brushes were in the wrong way and I didn’t realize they were directional! It works perfectly now!
SIR YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! my mixer wouldn’t turn on and I tried your tapping trick, it worked immediately!!! thank you!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Glad I could help
Thank you soooo much! I took my mixer apart to clean it and put the brushes in weird so it wouldn’t turn on. You are a life saver. God bless you.
Thank you for your time!!! I really appreciate this. Trying to troubleshoot my mixer this week. It just stopped turning on at all abruptly a while back and I never figured out why.
What a life saver... I just finished greasing and painting everything and did I ever not know about this info 🙌
A big thank you from me too! Replaced the worm gear and the mixer would not turn on. Fiddled with the brushes and we have life!
Thanks for the video and the explanation. I had just finished re-greasing and upgrading the power cord of my mother-in-law's 1970 tilt head KitchenAid. It was about an hour and a half project that I spread out over two years. Evidently, two years ago, I pulled those brushes out and, having not seen your video, I paid no attention to how I put them back in. This video saved the day for me!
Glad I could help
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT INFO !!! I FIXED MY MIXER !!! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.....WHILE I WAS CLEANING MY MIXED I TOOK OFF THE BRUSH BUT I DID NOT PUT IT IN CORRECTLY....... !!!!
THANK YOU!!! I have been stumped after painting and reassembling my mixer and i just realigned the screws and it works!
Thank you!! I put the brushes in the wrong way after servicing my mixer, and it wouldn't start. This was extremely useful.
Just fixed mine with your help! Heart sank after replacing the power cord and it didn’t turn on. Always check your contact brushes!
Putting the brushes in the right way, as you showed, fixed my machine (I had mistakenly taken them out while fixing the worm screw). Thanks so much!
Lol, I did the same thing on the first try.
me too
Daryl, tysm! I took my used kitchenaid apart to give it a deep clean. Guess I put the brushes in wrong (mine have one corner flattened, not quite a triangle). Checking how they should fit did the trick! Saved me a trip and $ to take it somewhere.
Thanks for this amazing video. Just fixed my kitchenaid after watching this video and it works. I spent £10 for the parts instead of sending it to fixed for £300.
It feels so good to be able to fix something yourself :)
Happy it helped
Thank you for a concise and clearly understandable video. I feel confident trying to fix my mixer.
You have saved me from despair. Motor brushes in backwards. Easy fix. !
Thank you so much! This is exactly what was wrong with my machine; I took it apart the other day for a deep clean and re-grease, and I pulled these out to clean the caps and just stuck them back in without thinking they went a certain way. Needless to say, I was devastated when I went to turn it on.. and it wouldn’t.
Christmas cookies have been saved! Thank you!!
Glad it helped!
AAH thank you so much! I thought I was going to have to replace the cord, but I tapped it on the back like you said and it came right on! So I'll replace the brushes.
Thanks! I am making my baby granddaughters birthday cake today and it wouldn't turn on! I sent your vid to my son so he can fix it before the holidays! I did get it going today finally, but I'm sure that's the problem. Ty again. X
Happy birthday to your granddaughter
Awesome job. I repaired the worm gear in my mixer and tried to turn it on and it wasn't working. After watching your video found I didn't line up the notches on the brush.
Its easy to have happen. Sometimes they get stuck and dont slide all the way in either.
thank you so much! painted my dads old kitchen aid and it didn’t turn on after. i was so sad but i just needed to fix the brushes!
Thank you so much! Your video brought my mixer back from the dead :)
Thanks a lot. Mine just worked now. It was the brushes i just put them in different angle and worked right away. Great video. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You saved my life bigtime. Now my mixer is working 100%
Thank you so much! I was going crazy replacing the brushes.. I didn't realize they fit only in one position.
Glad it helped. The video was my wife's idea.
Can't thank you enough for this video. Fixed my mixer
Happy it helped
I have a nearly "new" kitchen aid mixer and it will not turn on. I bought it in 2009 at costco. Similar look as yours. I probably have used it 10 times at the very most! Have not abused it. I nearly threw it out because I was so mad at thing...It has been sitting for 2 years in my bedroom. Trid to find a repair man in my area and was not able to. Your video has inspired me to take it apart.
Well, be careful and unplug it before you work on it. There are several good youtube tutorials on diagnosing motor or control issues.
@@darylturcott Thank you. Success! It was the switch that regulates the speed! It was corroded! Working now!!! Yay! Thank you again!!!!
Thank you, I replaced a gear and gave up….then found your video and its working perfectly, my gf is very happy
Glad it helped
i love you Daryl!
Just bought a artisan for 200 Swedish kronors (20 dollars) that didn´t work and now it does thanks to this video!
Wonderful♡
Thanks, I found one at goodwill for $50 and it just needed a little adjustment. Now it works great.
That's a good deal!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I love youtube for content like this. You saved my bacon today.
Thank you! Solved my problem in just a few minutes, and saved me from having to buy a new KitchenAid. 👍
Thanks,
Oh man! You saved me $500! Lol I thought it was the motor and almost gave up. With Thanksgiving coming up I thought I’d give fixing it one more shot
Glad it helped
Jitsu like everyone else said, THANK YOU! We were about to get a new mixer all just because the brushes weren't lined up the right way! 🤦🏻
Thank you so much! This video saved me so much money!!! Your a life saver
Thanks--got my daughter-in-law's 30-year-old mixer working again!
Excellent
Very grateful to you! Thought I broke our mixer cleaning it.
Thank you so much!!! I apparently didn't put the brushes back in properly and I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong with my mixer.
Thanks, saved me buying a new mixer :-)
I just bought an open box return from Walmart. It didn’t power on lol I’m guessing it was like that from the factory. Followed your instructions it now works! Thanks 🙏
Oh wow!
Thank you! Very helpful.
you are a rockstar, saved me some time and a huge headache thank you!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for your help. Reinserted the spring and my 40 year old mixer is back to purring!
Glad it helped
Wow! It worked! Thank you sooo much!!
Thank you this fixed my issue saved me from sending it to get repaired
Glad it helped
Thank you SO MUCH! Those directional brushes had me so confused.
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much, your trick to tap it worked for me!!!
My friend - you just saved me $100s - thank you for the perfect video! And best wishes to your wife for her cake business!
Glad it helped!
Thank you worked perfect!
Thank you for the video. I wish someone would explain how these older speed controls work, (how the control panel and the speed governor work together to control the speed). The functioning of the "power off" part is self-evident, thank goodness. I replaced the mangled plastic worm gear in my wife's white KSM5, and now it won't even try to spin when I power it on. Luckily, I have a second (grey) unit (which also has a bad gear, but its motor spins), which allowed me to prove that the control plate, the phase control panel, and even brushes on the white one still work (the motor on the grey unit still spins when those parts are swapped out), but I can't figure out what else it could be other than the armature or field assembly , or wires leading to those parts. I can turn the planetary gear part of the white unit by hand and hear the motor turn, so I know nothing is seized up. All the shiny metal parts on the grey unit rusted over while in storage (bowl raise handle and track mostly), so it's currently only good for t-shooting & parts, but I may have to restore it if I can't get the white one's motor to spin again. The motor on the gray is rated slightly higher (350), so maybe it's worth the trouble, but then again, the wattage ratings are close enough that the white one could have the same motor, but the rating could just be more honest on the white one.
I wish I could. I assume it's a variable resistor set up.
So grateful for your video. My 20+ 5 quart would not power on. Did the rap thing and it started. Tried to remove the brushes to inspect and replace. Covers unscrew but one spring came off the carbon. Any advice on getting the carbon out?
Carbon is not a hard material.if you can gently drill into it, or insert a long screw it might pull right out. Make sure its unplugged, and don't damage the brass housing. If it breaks in pieces, lay it on side and gently probe the material with a dental pick or similar to dislodge it.
Nice to know, thanks.
Thank you so much for this video - I'm so happy this was an easy fix. Quick question though - my mixer is finally turning back on again, but only works once I set the speed to 6 or higher. The speed doesn't appear to change however. Do you have any opinions on what it could be? Thanks!
I wish I could advise you on that, but the speed controller is a mystery to me
@@darylturcott Well thank you anyway for helping me figure out the brushes!!
I had this same issue and found it was due to how tight the screw was on the back of the electrical. Loosen up that screw and the lower speeds should come on.
Totally happy with this video
Thank you for watching
Thank you so much Mr Scott, you just saved me some good money. I put the brushes and my kitchenaid roared.
It's just that the sparks you mentioned, that can be seen from the switch still occurs. Any tips on how to solve that?
You could try a shot of qd electronics spray cleaner. Not sure if it would help.
@@darylturcott ok thanks. will let you know if it works
This was a big help, thanks
Happy it helped
Thanks you I taught my mixer broke easy fix👍
Glad it helped
made my day. thanks
kudos. you just saved my marriage! 😂
Glad I could help
Love how easy this seems to be. One thing, I do so wish there were either links to purchase the brushes or what the part name is called.
I always hesitate to share links, I don't want people to think I'm profiting from them.
@@darylturcott I appreciate this attitude because of course, so many people do profit in this way. But I am unclear about the name of the part. It sounds as if this may be what's wrong with mine, that I have had since 1977.
What part am I looking for? Does it have an actual name other than Kitchen Mixmaster brushes?

@@darylturcott THank you!!
Good video! Do you also repair the rotary dial telephone hanging on the wall? Get with the times! They started making the push button style.
The phone works, lol. Bought it at yard sale just for fun.
Thank You!!!
Hello,
Wondering if you could give me your counsel,
I was trying to fix my sisters KAM, which wasn’t rotating, I replaced the gear and all, closed it and all and didn’t notice I had put in the speed-lever incorrectly which the copper bar that closes the circuit to touch part of the metal frame. I replaced the speed control plate and the brushes (they’re placed properly) but it still will not turn on.
Any advice on what could be my next step?
Thank you
Do you have a voltmeter?
I would get a test light or meter and start by testing the cord. Then test power to the brushes. If cord has power and brushes dont, then the problem will be in between, probably in the speed control switch.
Cord has current, I do not get any current from the red wire coming from the motor,
Replaced both the speed control plate and phase board and both brushes
If you are sure the brushes are right, look at the brush holders, each one should have a wire soldered to it.
Thanks, it worked!
Glad it was helpful. Merry Christmas
Thank you. Fixed it
Glad I could help
Thank you a lot!!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much!!!!!
Glad it helped
is the angled brush supposed to be at the top?
Hi, thanks for the video, I have this problem:
I disassemble my kitchenaid because I wanted to clean the liquid grase, and I unplugged the brushes ONLY, I didnt touch any circuit or another piece of the motor... Well, I put it back in the same place every piece, and now it don't turn on. I don't know what to do because of the quarentine, and I don't have a multimeter or tester at home... Any idea what can I do? Sorry if my english is not good, I speak spanish. Thanks again, salute.
If it worked before, you must have one of the brushes in wrong.
@@darylturcott Thanks, you were right, but I had an another problem, the speed control plate. I solved, but I have another problem now, the machine is making noise at Stir.
I don't have an answer for that. One of ours did that we just ignored it until we got a new one. My wife does semi commercial use so we replace ours every 5 years.
@@darylturcott I was thinking it could be the worm gear, it's plastic or something like this, so you can replace it, and the grase, both together.
Hi excellent video and do you have a video on replacing circuit board on that mixer?
I dont. I had mine apart once but that was years ago and I remember it was tricky to get back together.
If you do it, take photos so you remember how everything goes.
@@darylturcott thank you
Hi I’m not here because my mixer didn’t turn on, but because the first time ever I turned it on, I noticed some sparking coming from that switch speed gap. I assume brushes are new and I didn’t touch them, so I wonder what might cause that sparking. Any suggestions? Thanks
It happens sometimes with variable resistors, either a little debris, or not a smooth surface for good contact. I would pull plug, move switch back and forth 20 to 30 times, then plug it back in and retry it.
Hi there, how do I make sure I am ordering the correct brushes?
W 10380496.
I am pretty sure all models use the same brush.
I broke my mixer by removing the brushes when looking at it. Now I can't tell which way they go in. I can't see any cut out inside the mixer. Does the rounded part go up or down?
The curved edge is on left and right sides. Points at top & bottom
In attemtping to locate any numbers that would identify my Kitchen Aid, I discovered that even though the lever is in the unlocked position, the "head" won't raise up. Any idea how to fix that?
None of ours are tilt heads, I only have bowl lift models. I'm guessing the lever is stuck.
@@darylturcott The lever moves forward and back quite easily, but the thing won't tilt. I sure wish you had some ideas.
@daryl turcott Thanks for this! The videos I watched all said only one way for them to fit. They slipped in easily so I thought they were oriented properly. I reorganized them. It turned on once but sounded sluggish in 1st gear. I thought it was bcuz the new food grade grease needed to work throughout more. I slowly turned it up one gear at a time. It made a slight burn smell like the grease warmed up. I turned it down to stop...now it won't turn on again. Please help me...I'm unemployed and can't afford a repair shop
You didn't put grease in the holes with the brushes did you? The only place to but grease is in the gear box.
Darylturcott@gmail.com email me with pictures if possible
Thanks for responding. The only place I put the food safe grease was in the planetary and gearbox where the worm gear was. It turns out when I originally put the new bushings back in wrong...I thought both would face same directions) I misshaped the springs so they were not full contact
Once I corrected the misshapened springs (I inserted a small wooden dowel just slightly thinner than the spring...I tightened the twist and massaged it with my fingers bcuz if over tightened it would break), I was able to put them in properly with no sparks when turned on
I'm officially back to baking! Yippee! Thanks for your help
My kitchen aid won’t turn on the lever is stuck in the off position and won’t move forward. Is that a brush issue? Or something else? Thank u for your video
The lever is not connected to the brushes. You may have a broken spring or hinge in the controller.
@@darylturcott should I toss it and get a new one? Or is there a repair shop you think?
Dont do that. It's likely a very simple inexpensive repair
@@darylturcott thank you 😊 appreciate that!
I have the newer model and it doesn’t have the brush. How do I fix mine?
Im sorry, i dont know.
My mixer still will not turn on. This thing is probably 20+ years old. Do you know how long they last? Thanks.
I've seen 40+ years. Second likely trouble spot is the speed control. Look for some videos about that.
Yeah, I can tell your wife makes a lot of cakes...not that there's anything wrong with that!
I just bought a used one off craigslist and the lady plugged it in and turned it on showing me it worked. It was an ugly light green color so I decided to paint it bright red. I took all apart and taped it up to protect the back electronic part and painted away. After reassembly I plugged it in and nothing. Any ideas as to what happened? I removed the brushes and reinserted them several times and still no results. The brushes still have a good length to them, no where near as short as the ones in this video.
They only go in one way, otherwise they wot touch the rotor. You didn't get any spray into the speed control arm area did you? That is a variable resistor it needs good contact to wo r k.
@@darylturcott Is that the exposed area you can see in your video at the back of the mixer? I taped it up pretty good and made sure everything was covered
Sounds like you did a good job. Double check the brushes.
Update! I checked the brushes and had one of them in upside down. It works like a charm now.
This worked great for redoing the shower/bathtub of my kid's bathroom. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxfiuHoZJo3bgdVPFRxQ-iqPpfbEHl2cYt I didn't like the guide, so I took it off. I just used a fine tipped sharpie on the tile and followed that line. It does make a wet mess, and once I started looking like I wet myself I started wearing a towel and apron while cutting. The blade it came with worked great until we wore it out. It was better than the replacement one we bought. I tried looking for just their blade, but failed. Not really for larger tiles unless you stack stuff on either side to support the tiles. Anyway, would definitley buy again.
Excellent machines
My brushes won't come out.. only the spring comes out. I guess I have to take the whole thing apart?
I wouldn't. Try a drop of super glue on something small and flat that you could reach in and touch the brush. Or spray a little contact cleaner in.
@@darylturcott good idea. Thanks
Well that didn't work. So I took it apart, One brush was jammed in there so hard I had to pry it out with a screwdriver. The whole copper housing came out with it. Does it matter which way it goes back in, How do I figure that out ?. Thanks
holy crap that's an old phone!
I wired it up and it works. But the ringer is going bad.
I put my brushes in wrong. Thank you!!!!!!
It is so easy to do it wrong. I made the video because it happened to me.
My man! Saved the day. Everyone you just have to look inside the hole to see which way they go. Use a flashlight. Mine were not oriented the same on both sides fyi. Cheers!
You said it won't turn on, then you turned it on. Clickbait.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe to my channel.
Thanks Daryl my girlfriend is very happy about her mixer being fixed
Happy it worked.
