A very good tutorial on replacing the governor. I see that a socket was used here to help force the governor assembly onto the end of the shaft, but a nut driver or some other hollow tube shaped tool would also work. It's probably a very bad idea to tap directly on the end of the governor assembly, so a hollow socket or similar tool will force the assembly on to the shaft without damaging the "nub" on the rear end of the governor.
On some of these KitchenAid tilt head mixers, it is necessary to first disconnect the lower wires before removing the cardboard cover. Those cardboard covers in some cases form a complete ring around the back of the housing, without a gap at the bottom as shown in this example. When you try to pull off the cardboard ring the lower wires are in the way.
I just worked on a KitchenAid Artisan model that had a rather unique problem with the governor. The movable bracket on the governor would not shift back and forth and would not control the speed of the machine. In this case, it turned out that the governor was not defective, but it could not move back and forth due to corrosion on the motor shaft.
The movable bracket has a hole that fits closely over the motor shaft, and this keeps it centered as it slides back and forth along the shaft. The excessive corrosion on this motor shaft was enough to prevent the governor bracket from moving as it should. Using fine sandpaper to clean and smooth the motor shaft solved the problem, allowing the governor to work as designed.

part arrived broken, but I salvaged the roller pins, which I need. fix didn't work ultimately. Any ideas why the motor won't start? no sound, just nothing. cable is ok, as I get voltage at the interior wires.
Thats a bummer that it came in broken. Ive heard it can be a few things:
Something could have shorted out the speed control plate,
The brushes could be very worn, the speed settings could be not properly alighned. have you tried backing out the speed control screws and seeing if it turns on?

I caved in and just took it to a service place which wasn't too far from me - they have parts in stock, and work on these all the time - it needed a clean up in any case, and I guess my energy for new DIY isn't what it used to be. After messing around with the mixer and replacing the phase board and then speed control plate, it finally worked again only temporarily. I took off governor to look at and re-assembled machine but forgot to put on governor and, voila, it worked again! It went to the highest speed even on setting one but it worked. What I don't understand is it (governor) looks fine, it's not electronic so what is there to 'go bad' on this part? I can purchase another part (third part now) but I'm curious how this non electronic part is the guilty party in the non functioning machine! lol
Ya its a strange one, It appears that the governor is two wait that spin, and if they are slightly askew or out of whack they can throw everything off. That's my take anyways. My governor weights became loose and stretched almost and it was throwing the weight off completely and into the wiring!
My Kitchenaid mixer is from 1970. The problem with mine is the motor stopped turning on. Could the problem be the governor in this case as well? Thank you for your help and thanks for the video!
It could be worn brushes. Especially if they have never been changed. Its worth a try, and would be a cheap fix. I dont know if these are the correct model, but they are something like this amzn.to/2YDMMhF

My neighbor threw one of these away almost like new it's really good shape I got no power whatsoever possibly it could be the board I don't know not sure how to test it that's why I'm watching your video thank you for posting this.
What a score. I would assume it would be something electrical like the board, or power source. You can look to see if any wires look frayed or shorted. Also the brushes could be worn out. all the parts are real cheap, so you could replace a fre things and only be out $20-30 for most of the main components. Best of luck. @@DoesntPayFullPrice yes most definitely I looked at the brushes they seemed okay however I made a purchase of the gear that up front turns the mixer part I came with I believe too it's the board. Yes I'll let you know definitely

So I lost hold of the spring holding the bottom of the board and can’t find it anywhere. Any tips on where it would have landed and how to get it out? Can I purchase a new one? 😮
I'm sure you can purchase a new one. Did it snap back into the machine? That has happened to me, it can be a little hard to see or get out of there
It must have, but I’m not able to see it or hear it when I turn the mixer upside down and shake it. I found one online and ordered it. Now I need to figure out how to install it once it arrives. 😊Thanks and great video!

What about mine motor spinning but not normal way, no tension, no firmness and create click when running.

I found all the parts I need on amazon. There are other online retailers that sell appliance parts also.
Same thing happened to mine. The weights flew off into the armature. I managed to get them out and have bought s new governor but now it's not turning on. Is there a certain amount you need to push it on?
That happened to mine too. The weight I think loosen over time. I replaced the whole governor. Try to play with the speed adjustment screws. Sometimes you need to screw them all the way in and back them out evenly until it clicks on.

I have never had that happen. Do you have the same type of mixer as in my video with a tilting head? or does the bowl move up and down?
Is the speed governor the only thing that could be wrong if the mixer isn’t turning on??
It could be a few things. It's possible the brushes are very worn, or maybe the speed control plate. I also noticed mine short circuited when the speed governor came off, so it could be a wiring issue.
I just had this happen, i have a hand me down mixer, are all parts about the same size? Its very much an older one!
You should be able to find them pretty easily if it's the same brand. They haven't changed a whole lot.

My artisan isn't turning off :( I have to unplug it to make it stop. if it's plugged in it only works on low speed - doesn't matter which speed level I'm on. Do you have any advice what I might need to change to make it work again??
I don't know for sure, but it could be the speed control plate. I've never had that happen to mine. did anything happen that caused it to start doing that? You can always take the back panel off and see if anything looks out of the ordinary.

I have one with the same issue. It appears the speed control lever has become disconnected from the actuator rod. I am going to disassemble the case and see what exactly the problem is and will advise.

So originally, the weights of the speed governor flew off and hit other electrical components shorting out my breaker. Then without those weights it would just go from off to high speed even on stir.
I'm wondering if youd be able to troubleshoot an issue I'm having with kitchenaide mixer. The panel keeps hitting the sides of the bowl and even chipped my last panel. I replaced the panel but it keeps hitting the bowl aggressively. It does not matter what speed it's on. It was passed down to me when my grandma passed away earlier this year. I dont want to throw it away

Sorry for the delay. When you lift the head of the mixer there is a flathead screw that is used to adjust how high or low the mixer sits in the bowl. You can turn it a half turn clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust it. Mine was doing the same thing, the blades would hit the bottom of the mixing bowl. Hopefully that helps.

When the brushes get worn down I was told the mixer won't turn on. Could be an electrical issue as well. It's tough to say. I thought my mixer wouldn't turn on once and realized I tripped the breaker to the whole kitchen. Hopefully this helps a little.

@@curtkimbell228 let me know if you figure it out, I'm interested to know. It could be the speed control plate, if it isn't calibrated it won't turn on. There are two speed adjusting screws, if they are backed out too far it won't click on.

M Garcia never figured it out. Replaced speed control plate and control panel. I was going to buy new brushes but wife ended up buying New KitchenAid.😳So I gave up and put it in closet, to battle another day😂👍

Great video! I really thought I found what I was looking for, but your problem is actually different from mine. I don’t think the speed is necessarily wrong, it’s just that there seems to be something wrong with the actual spring in the speed control lever. It won’t stay in the ‘off’ position, and it skips the lowest speed (stir). It’s permanently stuck on setting 2, and when I pull the lever to the ‘stir’ or ‘off’ position, it just bounces back to ‘2.’
I wonder if anyone else has had this problem?

I haven't heard of that happening. Did you double check all of the wires and make sure they were connected correctly?

Okay. I was asking because I am going to buy a KitchenAid soon and I would like to be able repair it if something were to happen to it.
There are a bunch of sites that sell parts, I've had this one for 10+ years and have just now had to do some repairs. Parts are cheap and the repairs have been really easy!

Try screwing the screws all the way in, and then slowly turn them out at the same time with it on low until it turns on
