Tremendously diligent cracking job Sam. Well done. Piecing together such a smashed and rather delicate plastic part was not something we thought possible, but you’ve managed it. This series is always such a joy. Cherio and ciao.
I really enjoyed watching this Class 40 restoration quite a bit. I was concerned about the bogie being in so many pieces. I think the two part resin was the bees knees. Thanks for showing it run on your layout.
I really enjoy this series too Sam. I salvaged a broken Hornby Evening star in a similar fashion (the valvegear on one side was broken) alothough I cheated and got a new set from Hornby spares! Something very satisfying about fixing something that's destroyed. Keep up the good work!
thank you for making videos like this. i love fixing things and i’ve always wanted to learn how to fix my trains. watching these videos teaches me how. thanks, sam.
Good job. Class 40 preserved. Was good to see you using the time to glue the pieces together. I like it. Araldite, not seen that for ages. Nice locomotive the 40 in blue. Well done.
I was betting the scrapman had this model in the bag. Glad to see he's still only got 1 model so far! I was curious to see if this was going on eBay, and would've loved to see a followup to see if the glue held. Guess Sam didn't want to risk someone bidding on it and it falling apart after shipping! Side note: I'd love to see a behind the scenes of this series! How the time-o-matic calculated, how scrapman was built, etc.
Just shows what can be done with a little care! Nice one, would have been sad to see an otherwise cracking model go to the bin! Araldite really is fantastic stuff 😎 Cheers mate 👍🍻🍀
This is a great series, Sam. Are you going to be selling 'Salvage Or Scrap' shirts at all? I work in a scrapyard, and it would be ideal to wear under my PPE.
More great work! Someone must have chucked that loco at a wall! Epoxy modelling putty or even car body filler are useful for filling in places where the original plastic areas are missing
Yea I added about 200g extra weight to my Hornby Class 40 too, to make it useable. Tough the best solution would be to add a second driven bogie, or buy a Bachmann class 40, instead.
I kinda liked how it looked before repair, pretty realistic depiction of a dead loco that slowly rust on a forgotten siding somewhere, cannibalized for parts....
This was outstanding to see, I really wasn't sure if it was possible to rebuild that bogie. When I saw it on the intro to the other Salvage or Scrap videos, I thought the entire truck was completely missing! Also if I'm not mistaken this is the first DCC (and also DCC sound) loco to be featured on Salvage or Scrap. I have a question, will you be keeping this one in your collection? It will be really cool if it shows up in future videos.
Hi Sam great repair on this loco. 2 part epoxy is my go to adhesive. You will get a much stronger bond if you use a low heat source, maybe a convector heater or radiator. You might want to try this idea on some scrap plastic first.
Ah, 40 164. An interesting loco in its own right, as it was the loco involved in the Christmas Eve 1977 crash at Glasgow Queen Street. On the morning of Christmas Eve, 40 164 was coming in to take a Glasgow - Aberdeen express, when the brakes failed down Cowlairs bank. The signalmen tried to divert the loco on to a free platform, but only succeeded in sending it onto platform 5, which held the - thankfully empty - stock of the 06:00 to Mallaig. The engine and the rolling stock was badly damaged. And why did the engine breaks fail? Well, the story is that wheel profiling had left the brakes with very little to bite on, and the rest is history.
PLEASE go DCC! Would love to see your reviews of DCC loos as well. I'm sure a lot of low torque locos also perform much better with BEMF, especially coreless motors.
Will u be reviewing the new hornby tt a4 train set that comes with a4 3 coach's and track for 190ish rrp which will be less at the retailers I no u don't do tt but as its a train set u get all u need to run as u know It will be fascinating to see what a a4 plus 3 coach's for less that 200 would be like quality wise as well as it being a new tooled a4 as hornby till now didn't have a tt a4
You think there is a way to make or find a new hornby dock shunter or something? Like maybe you can 3D make the body and find a way to make the mechanism and the wheels or something?
If I recall, Hornby TTS decoders have a setting where they can run on DC or DCC with the decoder installed with the DC side enabled by default. That said, not the most reliable of reverse compatibility. I still think it was cheating to wait for glue to dry and pause the time :P Seriously though, you had a pretty decent shot at this and you did a lot better than I would have done with it.
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could 3D print a new bogie frame to replace the damaged one. Have you looked on GIT Hub? Does Hornby sell the frame as a part? this would obviously be the best option
I like these savage or scrap videos :) Sam and I’ve got a question have you ever reviewed a 611 locomotive because if you haven’t then that’s something you could always do just as a suggestion. Keep up the good work :)
I think the loco might've been put on a very high shelf by the previous owner, and then it fell due to some accident and broke into many pieces and ended up like that.
Well done yet again. I am just surprised how much you have to pay for some of these wrecks in the first place, even if this was a Sound version. Would a thin splice piece on the inside have helped with the major bogie repair?
Always watch your shows....after watching US videos, it appears that Hornby points do NOT have the same height above the sleepers and this causes dereailments and cut outs at slow loco running speeds
I have a pair of American diesel-electric road swichers and an american tender steamer that don't run. If you want them for Salvage or Scrap, I can see about getting them to you.
Can you hit that caterpillar train with a hammer and add it into this train pool. If you make sure the time-o-matic gives a really low number and that this can be given to the scrap man and be gone forever.
I just received the return package I tried to send you with the N gauge trains, in the package it had some N gauge passenger cars that look like their a British style, I'll email you a picture of them if you'd like, and I also included some N gauge Bachmann EZ track to make it a train set, did you want me to try and send you the track or did you want to just purchase your own N gauge track (and just as a tip if you decide to purchase your own N gauge track get code 80 track (the tallest rail in N gauge) it's more compatible with new N gauge trains as well as second hand N gauge trains)
This week, on Salvage Or Scrap, Sam has to restore a very badly damaged Hornby Class 40 Diesel! Will he be able to do it in time, or will THE EVIL SCRAP MAN come calling? Find out, in yet another exciting episode of Salvage Or Scrap!
Honestly this is my favorite series from you Sam! I love seeing what models are getting saved and what you can do in the short time allotted! :D
Thank you so much Aaron, so glad you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love this series. I do feel for Scrapman. The poor old guy is probably terribly hungry.
He eats screws that Sam drops when servicing engines lol
Tremendously diligent cracking job Sam. Well done. Piecing together such a smashed and rather delicate plastic part was not something we thought possible, but you’ve managed it. This series is always such a joy. Cherio and ciao.
Thanks very much Linda - yeah this one was very stressful, haha!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video here Sam, good to see this one get restored, the 40 is a good locomotive.
Thanks so much David - it sure is! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very nice work. Always good to see a damaged loco back and operating on the tracks.
Thanks very much Larry!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow Sam l, I don’t know how you can take these old models and make them like new. It’s really quite impressive. Keep up the awesome work!!!
Thank you so much Tommy - this one was tricky with all those breakages!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I really enjoyed watching this Class 40 restoration quite a bit. I was concerned about the bogie being in so many pieces. I think the two part resin was the bees knees. Thanks for showing it run on your layout.
Thanks a lot Debbie - yes the resin did a fantastic job, can always rely on that stuff!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Is it just me who saw the video "What is the best 3D printer for models" for a split second before it got replaced with this one?
@flame dude 1 no it is not just you I also have seen it
No I deffo saw it.
Saw it. No more. I have questions!
I saw it Sam if your seeing This please explain pls
I saw it, I wonder if he just uploaded the wrong video by accident
Dang, when I first saw that one in the intro I doubted that you could fix it. That was awesome.
Keep up the good work mate!
haha thank you so much - it was touch and go!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
One of my favourite loco’s I’m so glad you saved it, it’s looking good and should give you lots of service.
Thanks a lot Tony - fingers crossed it'll last!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I really enjoy this series too Sam. I salvaged a broken Hornby Evening star in a similar fashion (the valvegear on one side was broken) alothough I cheated and got a new set from Hornby spares! Something very satisfying about fixing something that's destroyed. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic job I’m shocked the scrap man did not get it but working on destroyed models is my favourite part and I have saved so many junked engines!
Thanks so much - haha I'm shocked too, thought this one would fail!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
thank you for making videos like this. i love fixing things and i’ve always wanted to learn how to fix my trains. watching these videos teaches me how. thanks, sam.
Good job. Class 40 preserved. Was good to see you using the time to glue the pieces together. I like it. Araldite, not seen that for ages. Nice locomotive the 40 in blue. Well done.
I’m so happy you got it fixed up! These type of long, double end diesel engines are my favourite
Top job Sam - glad you saved it. Looking forward to your next 3D print project.
Thank you so much - hope you like next 3D printed bits... doing some rolling stock for next time!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I seriously didn’t think the class 40 would run again but you somehow managed to get it working, great job par usual
Hi Sam, Fantastic, another back on track, don't like to scrap things, All the best Brian 😃
Great video nice to see an old broken train back to life again.
Thanks so much! :D
I was betting the scrapman had this model in the bag. Glad to see he's still only got 1 model so far!
I was curious to see if this was going on eBay, and would've loved to see a followup to see if the glue held. Guess Sam didn't want to risk someone bidding on it and it falling apart after shipping!

Cheers mate 👍🍻🍀
Very good stuff, I always enjoy these episodes, thanks for doing them!
It's a pleasure, really glad you enjoyed this!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
YES ! My Favorite series. Love to see the "Insides".
Thanks so much Richard, me too!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam, the only thing I think you could have done with the left over time is paint the dried glue black to disguise it a little more.
Black marker pen 👍
Well done Sam
Great to see the loco back on the railway again
Nick Australia
Whoop whoop, new video! Next season, maybe you can start looking at Viewers’ old trains and send it back when you finish them?
haha thanks Log - and that's a very cool idea!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It's really fells like a real TV show ( I know I keep saying that) but it's very cool. Well done :)
Cheers Jasper & Willow
This is a great series, Sam. Are you going to be selling 'Salvage Or Scrap' shirts at all? I work in a scrapyard, and it would be ideal to wear under my PPE.
haha that's a fantastic idea - I will look into it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
More great work! Someone must have chucked that loco at a wall! Epoxy modelling putty or even car body filler are useful for filling in places where the original plastic areas are missing
Awesome video today Sam glad to see the locomotive working and my hornby hush hush came today
Thanks James - ahh that's very exciting - hope you enjoy! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yea I added about 200g extra weight to my Hornby Class 40 too, to make it useable. Tough the best solution would be to add a second driven bogie, or buy a Bachmann class 40, instead.
Class 40: ME BOGIES MY WHEELS O-OH MY GOD THAT F****** HURTS
Nice that you managed to save this Diesel!
That thing looked completely destroyed. How you got it working is a miracle.
haha thank you! :D
I kinda liked how it looked before repair, pretty realistic depiction of a dead loco that slowly rust on a forgotten siding somewhere, cannibalized for parts....

,well done sam with that class 40 back in service ......
Hi Sam great repair on this loco. 2 part epoxy is my go to adhesive. You will get a much stronger bond if you use a low heat source, maybe a convector heater or radiator. You might want to try this idea on some scrap plastic first.
Have you ever had a comment from one of the previous owners of the locos in salvage or scrap? It would be interesting to see their reactions
this seriously needs to be a tv show or something.
Great episode of a great series made from a great idea ! Certainly my favorite outside your reviews. Keep the good job done !
Thanks so much Oliver - really glad to hear that, thank you! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is the one I have been waiting for, oh yes
You’re series salvaged or scrap is really good mate!
Well done for repairing this engine as always. The scrapman must be starving. Give him the parts you no longer use.
The record now stands at 11-1 Its awesome that you have only had one failed Repair!
Have you ever thought of using the newer UV curing glues which harden in 5 seconds?
I haven't, but that sounds just perfect for this, thanks for the tip!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
"The all-knowing Time-o-Matic"... ie, Sam in post-production after he's decided he's happy with the work or not. ;)
I'm saving my older damaged stuff for when I get and airbrush and compressor so I have something to practice on.
I love this series
Thank you :D
Hi Sam one small question.....seen as you haven't had to send many locos to the scrap man do you have to feed him 🤔
Ah, 40 164. An interesting loco in its own right, as it was the loco involved in the Christmas Eve 1977 crash at Glasgow Queen Street. Lovely video sam
I love this series, I hope all is well sam!
Btw your scrap monster has kind of a mighty boosh vibe to lol
Thank you so much! haha do you think?! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains of course and haha yeah.
Awesome video Sam's trains
good save trains keep up the good vid thanks lee
I find that 2 part epoxy is better suited for attaching detail work. but in the case of gluing the frame back together, super glue is your best bet.
Always good to save one,, I've saved quite a few on my own channel
You were nervous? I could hardly watch! I'm really looking forward to seeing this lovely loco running on your layout; Thanks Sam
haha yeah sad as it is I do get nervous sometimes, haha!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The Scrapman intro creeps me out every darn time!
Good videos sam, have you thought of a repair section where we send you broken engines that you maybe fix/service and return for a £10ish fee??
PLEASE go DCC! Would love to see your reviews of DCC loos as well. I'm sure a lot of low torque locos also perform much better with BEMF, especially coreless motors.
I have an 8 pin DCC loo
You need to buy something called Miter Adhesive, basically superglue and kicker but alot stronger. You can use it on almost anything
Will u be reviewing the new hornby tt a4 train set that comes with a4 3 coach's and track for 190ish rrp which will be less at the retailers I no u don't do tt but as its a train set u get all u need to run as u know
It will be fascinating to see what a a4 plus 3 coach's for less that 200 would be like quality wise as well as it being a new tooled a4 as hornby till now didn't have a tt a4

WOW ! Steady hands !
Just found this series!
Excellent! That's what I do reserecting the dead!
But what sort of clown smashed that in the first place???
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could 3D print a new bogie frame to replace the damaged one.
Have you looked on GIT Hub?
Does Hornby sell the frame as a part? this would obviously be the best option
That’s the Class 40 that was used in OPERATION SMASH HIT.
sam what do you think of the new tt120 as i have spent 600+ ponuds on my setup now do they want more money.
Any chance of a review of the new class 45 from Heljan? I know you love the Bachmann, so it might make for an interesting comparison.
Use metacrylic two part glue for plastics that ordinary two part epoxy's wont stick properly , it bonds plastic exceptionally well
Denied AGAIN! Sorry Scrapman. As long as Sam is here, you're out of luck.
That's your best one yet sam well done 👏 quick question how did it end up in that state i may have missed you saying
I like these savage or scrap videos :) Sam and I’ve got a question have you ever reviewed a 611 locomotive because if you haven’t then that’s something you could always do just as a suggestion. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks so much Paul! I don't think I have, but I'll look into it, thank you! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love your videos 😊
Sam could you cast a whole new bogey with a 3-D printer if you didn’t have time constraints will it be reliable
And on salvage or scrap's we try to restore a hornby Class 40.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I think the loco might've been put on a very high shelf by the previous owner, and then it fell due to some accident and broke into many pieces and ended up like that.
Will it run on the maim layout
So cool.
Thanks Justin! :D
Wow nice one. Had somebody deliberately broken the bogie 😱?
It looks like someone ate the driving bogey and then had Taco Bell and went to the toilet lol
No bowler hats are harmed in this video
Very good Sam 🙂🚂🚂🚂
03:55 That bit where you're removing 3D parts with the knife so close to your fingers always makes me wince... 😬
I want that shirt😂😂
Well done yet again. I am just surprised how much you have to pay for some of these wrecks in the first place, even if this was a Sound version.
Would a thin splice piece on the inside have helped with the major bogie repair?
Thanks a lot Jeffrey - yeah that's right, TTS mind you, so only adds around £35 to the cost!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Missing part is in a hoover somehwere. 😀
Why epoxy resin and not super glue (the relatively slow acting kind)?
The resin is much much stronger and sets rock hard!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Can you hit that caterpillar train with a hammer and add it into this train pool. If you make sure the time-o-matic gives a really low number and that this can be given to the scrap man and be gone forever.
My Class 40 has the split headcodes defineatley an older model
Is fit to return. Did he Break it ?
I just received the return package I tried to send you with the N gauge trains, in the package it had some N gauge passenger cars that look like their a British style, I'll email you a picture of them if you'd like, and I also included some N gauge Bachmann EZ track to make it a train set, did you want me to try and send you the track or did you want to just purchase your own N gauge track (and just as a tip if you decide to purchase your own N gauge track get code 80 track (the tallest rail in N gauge) it's more compatible with new N gauge trains as well as second hand N gauge trains)
How did the 40 get into such a mess?
This week, on Salvage Or Scrap, Sam has to restore a very badly damaged Hornby Class 40 Diesel!
Will he be able to do it in time, or will THE EVIL SCRAP MAN come calling? Find out, in yet another exciting episode of Salvage Or Scrap!
hey sam didnt you post a 3d printer video right before this one?
69 pound, you where seen coming! What a rip off, I would of told the person 10 pound for the shell you can keep the rest.
