    The new Hornby TT:120 train set "The Scotsman" features an A1 class LNER 4-6-2 class locomotive called "Blink Bonny" and 3 LNER Pullman coaches. As well as some track and a controller to get you started in this new range of model trains.
    Having finally received my missing power track from the previous video I can now test the locomotive and see how the set works!
    In this video I test the set on the included 3rd radius curves, and then also see how it runs on 2nd and even 1st radius curves too! How does it do?

    Two points: Check the front bogie for a piece of black tape covering the screw which holds the chassis to the body, it fouls the bogie and needs to be removed, probably just there so the screw didn't get lost during assembly. Secondly, the track apparently needs destressing, gently take the curve and flex it slightly to get the sleepers to give a little, if done correctly they will form the proper curve. These are both known common issues and easy fixes.

    Great video as usual Matt! I find the Scotsman an odd decision as the launch kit for this new scale, based on the reviews it seems lower quality than the hardcore railfans want from a flagship set, but at over £200 and with a 4-6-2 loco it's well beyond the entry level bracket as a table top set.
    It's almost like Hornby were at crossed purposes and couldn't decide exactly what they wanted from this new scale.

      I can see the reasoning behind it, Flying Scotsman is the most famous engine in the world, and Mallard holds the world speed record, so from a marketing viewpoint those are two big attractions, with the fact they are both Pacifics is a third.
      Personally, to get young children into the hobby, I think a freight set with a small tank engine, 5 wagons plus a brake van, would have been the way to go. To get small children interested it has to have play value and I think Hornby missed a trick here.
      The quality is impressive but that non-moving pony truck is annoying when you consider European manufacturers have been doing TT for much longer and don't resort to this solution.

    • @Simon_Nonymous

      @@ModelMinutes I have that feeling yes... producing an affordable starter set to get first timers interested in TT would have been my advice, experienced train modellers will spot any flaws and flood them through social media rather too quickly and deter potential converts to TT. Even experienced train modellers might have given it a punt if it was a lower price, just to see how it comapres to the more well known scales and gauges.

    Avery fair review Matt, thanks. I'm wouldn't be keen on the trailing pony being solid either, it looks plain wrong. If it can work in n guage . . . Perhaps it's a cost issue rather than design. @@ModelMinutes Hornby introduced the rigid, flangeless trailing truck in OO first, on the Merchant Navy, I think. and then on others. In that case it was to have all the driving wheels flanged, but retaining rigid one piece coupling rods. OK, its an old, old dodge - John Ahern used it on his model of 'Exe' in the late 40's and is acceptable on some models. Problem is with a Pacific's trailing wheels it does tend to show if they're rounding curves and the truck is way out of line! Given that the A3 and A4 Catarzi trucks were rigidly fixed on the real thing I would have thought Hornby could have done it that way, with a pivoted truck hidden inside the frames? After all, Meccano Hornby did it that way nearly a century ago now with their A4.

    How do you identify that its a digital connector track? Also a bit strange to send that for an analog set, as presumably it doesn't contain the suppression capacitor.
    How does a flangeless pony truck cause resistance on the curves? More likely just the controller or low torque motor.
    The track issue is well known, they come out of the factory stressed and just need a quick twist or stretch to free the rails from the sleepers, then the geometry is correct and they sit flat. This solves the issue with the front bogie lifting.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Рік тому +1

      A lot of people are saying these issues are “well known” but at the time I was recording this video they weren’t known at all, believe it or not this video was recorded over a month ago and then edited until recent release… content creation can be a time consuming process…
      I don’t know about it being a digital power track, I was under the impression it was analog
      Edit: the flangeless wheels force the loco up a bit on the curves before they disconnect from the rail which reduces the traction and then as it swings back onto the straight it does the same on reverse, increasing the resistance

    • @lukestevens8735
      @lukestevens8735 Рік тому

      The analogue power track has a red button, the digital has a green one. I assume Hornby just didn't have any analogue power clips in stock yet and so, rather than leave the OP with no power track the decided to send what they had available.
      There is a video pointing out that the 12 pieces of a circle actually give MORE than a full circle if carefully pinned down... That is an issue with the rail being a fraction too long. I've also seen on my Easterner set that the fishplates actually force the track apart.
      These are all little niggles that occur with a first mass production run. Further items will no doubt have the corrected (and probably something ells incorrect!)

    • @eisenbau
      @eisenbau Рік тому

      @@lukestevens8735 They provided the right connector with an analogue set. The reviewer didn't know enough about DCC to realise this doesnt work well with DCC, and that Hornby sell a DCC one specifically for DCC operation.
      There is a lot of gossip saying the cures were designed and manufactured wrong. The design is in fact spot on, and the rails and sleepers are correct. The issue is that the curves are 'tight' and a simple flex of the track frees the rail from the sleepers. (Similar to what you need to do with flexi track) The geometry is then spot on, and the rails sit perfectly flat. A simple fix discussed at length in forums, but reviewers seem to prefer problems rather than solutions.

      The easterner set which comes with an A4 sound fitted loco retails for £250 (but was out of stock on the Hornby website at the time i write this comment) but includes apparently: 1 x Locomotive, 3x Coaches, 1x Transformer, 1x Rerailer, 1x 3rd Radius Starter Oval with Track Pack 1 - Controller not included - app control based
      The A4 Mallard with sound is £219 on its own, to add rolling stock and track etc will easily push that price up by a couple hundred pounds, possibly making the expense double that of the set previously mentioned.
      Naturally it is your choice but if you were starting out, the set having most of what you need to get started is the better financial choice, but if you have the available amount of money then buying it all individually will ensure you get exactly what you want

    Hi Matt. I pre-ordered The Easterner and then considered The Scotsman. Other railway UA-camrs have highlighted the track problem. It does not make a perfect circle, and has to be stretched out to make a circle. This causes the inside track on the bends to rise up. Off course Hornby deny there's anything wrong with it. Apparently Peco also make TT-120 track. its better to buy their track, so I have been told. It looks like Hornby's track definitely has to be pinned to a board. You should also check your loco Matt. I saw some UA-camrs saying that they found a piece of Black tape under that front bogey. I don't know why Hornby expanded into TT when there are more experienced firms or 'giants' of that scale like Tillig, Märklin or Roco. Just to mention some. I find Tillig's starter sets are relatively very good for its price and quality and their track system is fantastic. The couplings are Tillig design. Kuehn uses Tillig's couplers, because they mainly produce locos and it is easier to have more cross compatability. I don't know what going over there in the UK with the OO scale which has HO track 🤣. 1:120 is much better for smaller space and it is still good for bigger kids to play with and N is I think only for adults, because you have to handle it carefully. TT is I think just the right scale for early modeller (like me and I have a foldable layout from the wall due to space limits)

    I was toying with the idea of getting a TT-120 set. I am not a model railway man. I do plastic kits. The Easterner set is slightly cheaper at £195. But Hornby really screwed me over with the offer to join the TT-120 Club for FREE. Basically on 8th Feb I went to the Hornby web site. Looked at the TT-120 Club page, and there was a banner that said the offer to join the club for Free had been EXTENDED. Then further down the page it stated that to join the club, all you had to do was add the club package below to your basket, then go to the checkout. But I could not find any club package listed below. There was just a blank White box. So I could not join the club. I sent an email to Hornby Customer Support. But it took 5 days for them to reply. By that time, the FREE offer had been removed from the web site. Hornby's email reply to me said basically "the offer has expired so tough". It then said I could pay the £30 to join. I declined and told them I would not be buying from them.

    How did you find the Train-set 3rd Radius Curve Track geometry compared to the separately bought 2nd and 1st Radius curves?
    Approximately the Train-set track geometry is seriously out, with a full circle overlapping by 3”! Ouch! Nice one Roco :(
    Explains the reverse camber on the 3rd Radius curves. How on earth did Hornby/Roco miss that one???
    Also apparently, the A1/A4 in the two TT120 set’s released so far have NO front-end NEM Sockets fitted as built to a cost, meaning that both locomotives cannot haul trains tender-first as found on most Preserved Steam Lines.
    And that the coaches are fitted with LIMA-esque pizza cutter wheel flanges that rub against the coach’s solebar whilst traversing curved track causing the locomotive to slow. Helps to explain the use of toy-like deep & cheap TT120 Code 80 track used by Hornby compared to PECO’s much more realistic TT120 Code 55 track.
    And also the coaches included in the two TT120 Sets released so far do not now come with lighting as previously advertised due to Hornby’s drive for maximum profit over customer experience.

      Do tell us why you think it a gimmick!

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir Рік тому

      I think it makes a lot of sense for Hornby:
      1) TT120 is already popular in the US, Europe and Japan so it's a world market as opposed to OO which is mainly a British market.
      2) For anyone new to the hobby it takes up less room. The models are also significantly cheaper compared to the equivalent OO ones (at least for new models, on a par with second hand OO).
      3) Many people find N gauge too small and OO takes up too much room, especially when they get older and have to downsize or only have a small home. So it's a nice compromise. It's also to scale, unlike N and OO gauge.
      4) Hornby loses a huge amount of sales to the second hand market and rivals. For the next few years at least they have a monopoly, so will hopefully make a profit on their huge investment in TT. Bearing in mind Hornby have been posting losses each financial year for some time. They need it to work and will be doing everything they can to make it a success.
      5) Shipping costs have risen by 500%+. You can get a lot more TT models in a shipping container compared to OO.
      6) The age profile of the hobby is quite elderly. As modellers die off they're not being replaced by younger ones. So what will happen to Hornby when they're gone? They are hoping that TT's more home friendly size will encourage more people to take up the hobby. How successful that will be remains to be seen, but kudos to Hornby for trying.
      7) Keeping it online cuts out the middleman allowing Hornby to keep costs down for consumers which will help get TT established. It also gives Hornby control of the product so they can offer discounts/deals, etc without upsetting the retailers.Plus it makes international sales easier.
      They have said that in the long term it will probably go to retailers (It already is in Australia), but until it gets established all the risk and reward are Hornby's which makes sense for both them and the model shops, who they apparently sounded out first.
      Like most things there are pros and cons. e.g. It's nice to have larger models but it's also nice to be able to build a more extensive layout. Which is more important is down to personal choice and circumstances.
      Currently there's limited choice of models and no pre-owned stuff, but there's already a fair amount in the pipeline and I suspect in 5 years they'll be a good range and a flourishing second hand market.
      Personally I hope it will be a success as the hobby would suffer if Hornby go out of business.

    It has been well documented that there is an error in manufacturing or specification of the Hornby TT120 curves. If you connect them flat, you get gaps on one side at the joins. If you connect without gaps, as you did, then a bad camber results. You can't avoid one problem or other with the Hornby curves. It's pretty unbelievable they could make such an obvious error in geometry on the track for a high-profile new product. Peco make TT120 track that does not have this problem. So... the solution to your problem on the curves would be to toss the Hornby curves and buy Peco replacements... unless Hornby come up with something to offer - but that would be expensive and embarrassing for them.
