    Nothing like a Triang Nellie! Great little engines. These were miles better than the 0-4-0’s that have replaced them.

    Funny thing two weeks ago I've repaired one of these myself. The blue one named Connie which I got for free from the model shop because it was dead and after a small clean up, lubrication and oiling she ran like brand new it's quite amazing. These old models are very easy to maintain because they are simple and recently I've started with maintaining and fixing then myself also because of you. Your videos are quite helpful with this and very entertaining. Keep up the amazing work Sam 👌 also nice to see another one escaping the scrapman

    Polly, a red loco

    Hi Sam, I have one of these,my very first loco, given to me in 1966 by my parents for my 6th birthday. Its not running but having just watched how you did this restoration, I may tackle it! I have an N Scale layout, so I may have to get a piece of OO gauge track to test it - my engine is Blue, with black trim. Thanks, from Melbourne, Australia...

    Nicely renovated Sam in a short time. I have this loco as 'No 27' bought for me by my dad in 1973 as part of a pick up good train set. I still have it, albeit painted in LNER Apple Green by me as a then 15 year old. The pick ups on mine failed and a nice old model shop owner did exactly the same repair as you. Very nostalgic! Bless you.

    Originally R355 Polly. I have one from the first issue. There were at least 3 colours, red, blue, or yellow. They came with stick on nameplates printed on sticky paper! Great little locos, they run forever and can certainly pull plenty for their size. A strange looking loco as it would be very difficult to fit the rear axle in the position it is on a real machine as there would be no room for the ashpan! Nice to see a good little loco getting repaired. Thanks Sam!

    Hi Sam, as this now green little locomothive was once red, then her name was "Polly", in my old Triang catalogue her retail number was R.355R, I had also possessed another one which was blue called "Nellie", her number was R.355B, there was a third llittle 0-40T called "Connie" (R.355Y). In pre 1971 currency these were priced at (please sit down) 33 shillings and sixpence each!

    I've done something like this recently. My local club was getting rid of 3 triang locos: a jinty, a hymek, and a princess. The hymek was the easiest to sort, as it had a small bit of body missing, as well as brushes and one component of the motor's electrical parts; I also touched up the paintwork in several areas, and now it runs well. The princess had 2 axles missing, as well as the drawbar and a tender load, and one cylinder and the piston rods on one side; it still needs a tender load and more weight in the tender, and the cylinder and rods, but also I fully repainted it so it needs lettering and numbers to be done; I also cut down the flanges on the plastic wheels, but the driving wheels still bounce a little on code 100 track. The jinty is missing the front bufferbeam, but the motor is also faulty (so it donated its brushes to the hymek), and it again needs a full repaint; it's also got the large flanged wheels, so struggles on code 100, so I'm not currently counting it towards my loco collection because its in such disrepair.

I've managed to repair/refurbish four of them so far, three with clerestories removed to make faux Isle Of Wight coaches. The fourth I turned into a ww1 ambulance coach and gave it to a friends' son last Xmas.

      The older model locomotives have better serviceable motors and proper brass metal gearing. Sealed motors only arrived in the 1980's on the smaller 0-4-0's then they finally migrated into the locomotives we see today.

      @@tonylaming4994 Sounds a bit like one of the old American locos I had. Not really what I'm hoping for right now, though, I'm hoping to find something better than my Bachman Thomas, Percy and Toby models for doing shunting stuff, but I need something I can afford on an American college student's budget of basically nothing. For me, that means I won't let myself pay more than $50 for a loco, and no more than $20-$30 unless it is something as nice as the Hornby Pecketts. Unfortunately, as I want something compatible with my UK style rolling stock, which means that models tend to be more expensive and generally come with the $10-$20+ cost of international postage, so it isn't really worth it to get one of these if they tend towards pocket rocket speeds.

    What do you use when you wash the bodies on locomotives, is it just water and some washing up liquid?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Рік тому

      It's a dry toothbrush with handsoap... I only add water during the rinse... works amazingly well!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)
