Hi Chris, thank you very much for the fast reviews of both of Sigmas new lenses. Dont ever feel your reviews are boring and repetitive. They are! But in the best possible way! Thats the ONLY way for us consumers to get an idea how lenses are - if you can’t compare the, side by side. Speaking of side by side: Which is better for astro: Sigma 20mm DGDN or Sony 20mm G?
After months of looking at many different lenses in the 17-21mm range, I finally decided to order the Sigma 20mm f/2. Two hours before it was delivered I first heard rumors of this lens coming soon. Fortunately, I've been very happy with the f/2 so far, and I'm resisting the temptation to buy this. I don't need it, I don't need it...
I've adapted the DG HSM version onto my Nikon Z7II and I loved the results; once this lens is available on Nikon Z mount, it is definitely going to be my go-to ultra-wide lens. Fingers crossed it's coming soon!
I use on Z7II as well for astro mostly. I like how it performs. At non infinity distances, this lens has field curvature or is less sharp in the corners but it's sharp where it counts at infinity for me. Even at 1.4 the sharpness across frame is acceptable for printing big tbh.
I have the voigtlander 21 1.4 and i so love that lens esp it's colors. This lens with the 82mm fl and all other goodies definitely will be a great addition to peoples bags for those that didn't want a mf 20/21mm lens. I would be curious to see it be compared to the sony 20 1.8g. Coma performance is pretty important for this FL for astro shooters.
@@shootermcgavin4999 That didn't stop Sigma producing lenses for F-mount, and it doesn't stop them from producing lenses for Z-mount; see Viltrox for example.
@@shootermcgavin4999 It's not that they don't allow third parties. Cosina has made lenses with electronic communications for Z-Mount, along with Viltrox. It's more to do with the fact that because Canon and Nikon do not open their mounts up for licensing (at least as far as we know), companies like Sigma and Tamron need to reverse-engineer the mount protocols, and this needs time.
@@Bayonet1809 The problem is there's certain brand quality that comes with "Art" If Nikon isn't releasing the algorithm that allows them to be competitive with Nikon's best. Sigma isn't going to drop 💩on that mount and ruin the perceived prestige of their "Art" legacy. That would F up their brand and ultimately money in the long run. IDK how long Nilon and Canon can keep this up. Maybe it's more profitable to keep a tight lock on the system for now. Who knows 🙄🤔!?
@@StandardUA-camrExcellent It's a dangerous game that Canon and Nikon are playing. I'm eyeing up third party lenses like these and already thinking about dumping my EOS R and grabbing a Sony. Canon, you think you can win this staring contest? lets see who blinks first...
Loved the dslr 20 for unique wife angle portraits. I currently have the voigtlander 21 1.4. This lens looks better but i love the color of the voigtlander.
The Voightländer seems to be a touch sharper and likely has less loca. But the Sigma lens has autofocus and pretty fast one as well which could absolutely be helpful for portraits. it is going to be much more valuable for a lot of people, especially since the Sigma is likely going to cost less than the Voigtländer.
@@cameraprepper7938 He makes no sense and contradicts himself with his own test chart. Whereas the corners on the Sony 20 F/1.8 at F/5.6 are Outstanding. By F/8 they both are excellent at a typical landscape aperture.
Nice! Could bey holy grail Aurora lens. I own the Sony 24/1.4 and 14/1.8. Love the 24 but it's kinda tight and almost dictatesaking panos and the 14 is just OK wide open. Tried the 20/1.8 and my copy was less than impressive so I returned it. I planned on trying another copy for the upcoming Aurora season. Think I'll pre order one of these instead. Cheers!
This lens looks lovely, but I've already got the Sony 20mm 1.8 which is a superb lens in its own right. I really don't know that this would be an upgrade.
I have the 20/1,8 and one of the reasons I love it is its portability and balance on a Sony camera (I hand hold it alot). This Sigma is approx twice as large and heavy. If all you use the 20/1,8 for is starry skies on a tripod then yes, seems worth it
@@Vantrakter that's why it does'nt make sense to me to upgrade to this sigma lens. Unless if I don't have 20mm focal length with wider aperture lens, I will buy this sigma lens.
i have the Canon EF version of this lense, its a blast to use and i still use it on my canon R5, however while 1.4 is very neat - the coma is a bit more visible than on the Samyang 14mm f2.8 so im always torn between those two. sigma is deffo sharper but has more coma, while the samyang feels a little less sharp but has basically no coma and is much much lighter :D
Some filed curvature and lots more star elongation/coma with the older dg art. The older one which is what I have has least vignetting wide open though.
I bought this lens yesterday. Today it's not working. I switched from photo mode to video mode and the aperture closed to maximum i think f16 . Because the camera can't recognize the lens anymore. I am really so sad now. I bought it brand new. It's making motor sound 3 times every time i switch the camera on but nothing is changing. Yesterday everything was ok really. 😔

The Sigma 20mm 1.4 are big and heavy, I am not fond of 20mm focal length Lens, but if I had to choose, I would get either the Voigtländer Nokton 21mm 1.4 or Sony 20mm 1.8 G.
The weight is not managed well at all unfortunately....over 600g is just too much when Sony 20mm f1.8 G is only 370g and performs really great. This is a great lens for those with strong back and muscles!
f/1.4 slurps 67% more light than f/1.8, so the Sigma 20mm f/2 is the more appropriate point of comparison. It's 365g and all metal. The only other 20mm f/1.4 is about a kg.
600g vs 370g seems big percentage wise, but in reality it's not that big of a different at all, I am a Sony 20mm f1.8 owner and pre-ordered this Sigma 20 1.4 DG DN, F1.4 over F1.8, have rear filter holder, and most importantly for me, the Manual Focus Lock, all very practical features on top of great optic. I think is a keeper.
@@dannyli9424 In fairness you haven't received it yet so you can't really say if it's a keeper or if there's hardly a difference in size and weight. I once tried a Sigma 35/1,4 DN which has similar weight and length as this 20 1,4 and it was noticably front heavy on an A9 body. In absolute terms 600g isn't much but in camera lens terms it can be, depending on how it balances with the camera body.
@@Vantrakter you are right, i should say " will be a keeper " instead, as for the weight and size thing, no, i don't have to try in order to tell, I am used to the Sigma 35 1.2 and 14 1.8 art so this is going to be a " tiny" lens for sure. also I will be using it on Z9 mostly as I will keep my Sony 20 for my Sony system. I don't like the Nikon 20 1.8S so I will give this Sigma a try.
I had the original Canon version it it was humongous. Optically perfect, but very not practical, not the lens one would take for a walk for fun. Opted out for a Viltrox 20 2.8, much lighter and smaller, and sharp as well.
Aggressively priced at USD899, this is essentially the same list price as Sony's 20/1.8. Each has their strength and weaknesses but obviously, the 2/3 stop aperture difference may be the most obvious determining factor.
It's a bit more expensive than Sony 20mm F1.8 in my country. I know it's almost 1 stop faster than Sony, but it's 2 times more heavy ... I guess I will chose Sony ...
Looking back at your Sigma 14-24mm f2.8, the corner sharpness of the 14-24mm is better than this new 20mm f1.4 even stop down to f2.8. The only advantage of the new lens is 2 stop faster.
When we compare the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 with the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 at f/2.8, the difference in sharpness between the two lenses would be negligible. What caused me to reject the incredible Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 was not the lens itself but the front filter system needed to protect the front element of that lens along with the use of other important filters, such as a circular polarizer or a graduated neutral density filter.
