Welcome to Perth . So glad you enjoyed Rottnest. It's a little piece of paradise and to really experience ' Rotto Time' you need to stay overnight. The place is super quiet at night when all the day visitors have left. It's just about the waves crashing , the stars, the sea breezes and the quokkas:) 80% of workers commute to the island daily. The 7am ferries are packed with workers.

that place at 11:50 is very nice. We had a company Christmas do there many years ago. The food was really good and of course it opens up right on to the beach

What an enjoyable vlog to watch 😊.
Love seeing so many quokkas but yes I get what you mean about their over familiarity with humans.
I visited there years ago. And also hired a bike. There weren't quite as many restaurant and store options then though.
I'm glad you're getting to see other parts of this continent. Top many people think Australia is just Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

Thank you! yes it’s such a fun spot to explore. We were quite shocked how built up it was, but nonetheless it was so stunning’

    G'day guys👋
Rotto/Wadjemup is a great getaway ❤️ Though getting somewhere to stay overnight or longer is way harder these days apparently.
Dunno about nowadays but back in the 70s we all had day trips whilst in primary school to Rotto, which was cool.
Back then, there was only the bakery from memory..no shop.
Rotto has it's seals, Ospreys, King skinks, Dugites & many others to spot.. & of course the main marsupial attractions Quokkas 😊🥰 ..said like clock, rock, sock 👍
Even in Winter it's a great stay!
    ✌️

Delightful to see another American transplant in Oz (like myself) enjoying beautiful Rotto. (Has anyone mentioned yet that ‘quokka” has a short /o/ sound, not a long /o/? I’m sure they don’t mind, though!) I definitely can recommend the glamping by Pinky’s, but best to hold out for a sale.

There is a boat trip right around the island visiting the seals and Fish Hook Bay. Recommended. I'm glad you got to Pinky Beach and Bathurst Bay Lighthouse. More impressive than the main lighthouse which is also twice the distance from the pier.

Hi watched your video and just need to realign your thoughts on Quokkas.
You mentioned that they've become used to human presence and that seems a little sad in that they may have been tamed a bit.
However it's that because they were isolated they've never actually been hunted by humans so they have no instinctive fear of us...that's why they're happy to mingle. They've never had a reason to run away from us.

    • @coffeeenut
      @coffeeenut  Місяць тому

I understand your comment however the massive issues that human interaction cause with wild animals of any population/species is detrimental. The familiarity of them with humans - regardless of their isolation or lack of integration with humans before- is dangerous for them. They start to rely on humans for food and don’t hunt for their own, they teach their young for years to come that one way to save energy is to get food from humans instead of the wild. They can get sick, transmit bacteria (either way), etc. They can also more easily get hurt from idiots who think it’s ok to pet them.

The local Aboriginal (Whadjuk people) name for Rottnest Island is Wadjemup. Their history with the island goes back round about 7 thousand years when it got separated from the mainland.

You can get the circuit bus to see the seals at cape vlamingh, Far end of rottnest.
The island is owned by the state trust. Apart from the small number of hotels, all those little bungalows can be rented but theres a very long booking time. It used to be done by lottery, to keep it affordable, but im not sure if that still happens. But that and the boats is why the general stores are there. When i was a boy there was only one store and it only sold milk, ice, and coca cola. Other than that you brought - or caught - your own. Its changed a lot. By the way, ive been going to the island for 50 years. Tourists have made the quokkas very used to people but its VERY rare for one to be injured by, or because of, people. No one lives full time on the island except the people who work there.
If you can get your hands on a private boat you can swim with the seals on carnac island. Just dont go off the beach, because the island is covered with tiger snakes. The male seals might also occasionally chase you up the beach. You can walk the sandbank to penguin island but get the ferry back if youre short and/or not a strong swimmer. In the morning when the tide is out the sandbar water is knee deep at most.
You can see dolphins and the occasional seal in Mandurah. Dont go on the dolphin cruise though - just walk along the water front past the M and Sebel (where the giant moreton bay fig is) until you get to the harbour entrance. 1pm-ish the pod fishes along the rocks and into the canals there.
Aquarium is at Hillarys boat harbour sorrento. Its not bad. The little sharks there live having their bellies rubbed (im serious about that).
Best to rent a car. Perth is deceptively big. Watch out for roundabouts and merging lanes. Drivers here are notorious for being a nightmare at both.
Ps the real spectacular scenery of perth (other than the islands)is north and south - kalbarri, shark bay to the north, denmark, albany, esperance to the south. Plus the margaret river wine region to the south (watch out for speed cameras).
For good reasons, the coast of WA is known as the Shipwreck Coast. Fremantle and geraldton maritime museums tell that story, including the gruesome tale of the Batavia shipwreck and mutinous massacre. There are two maritime museums in fremantle.

Hey you made it over here to Perth. Enjoy the warmer weather and west coast vibes. Totally different to Melbourne or Hobart. Hope you have enough time to get down to Margaret River, and enjoy the coastline and city/Freo.

    Yeah g'day Ash,
Welcome to way out West the part that matters. It was good to see Ratt's Nest again, Al's, and Tictacs (Tactics) again. Hopefully, you get to head down to Esperance and get blown away by the serenity of it all and the offshore Sealion colonies, which are far from the maddening crowds, with no one to bother them apart from the occasional abalone diver, White Shark, or Orca.
Closer to Perth, there is a seal colony at Seal Island alongside Penguin Island near the Swinging Pig (Rockingham). There is Carnac Island also but where there is little apart from a high concentration of blind Tiger Snakes.
I will definitely be hanging out for coffee reviews.

I have Canadian and American relatives and friends who are fascinated in why i live here. Their general opinion was always, "it's all hot dry desert full of venomous snakes and spiders, and so far away". The only true bit is the last 3 words of that quote. But for the few who made the journey here, hoping to see most of Australia in their 2 weeks of vacation, I needed to do a quick reality check. Firstly, Australia is really big. Driving distances can be huge. And flying ain't cheap. But the best thing for an overseas tourist to do is pick one place or area, and then explore and experience everything it has to offer. Because Australia is sooo different to anywhere else on the planet. For anyone from North America coming to Australia for the first time, I would recommend going to Cairns in June to August. It's dry season and not so hot. For their 2 weeks there is lots to see and do. Snorkel or scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef. Explore Cairns itself, both daytime and night. Take the train up to Kuranda for the day, and return by cable car. Journey up to the Atherton Table Land. Spend a day or two in the Daintree Rain Forest, oldest rain forest on the planet. Go to the crocodile farm and see huge salt water crocs up close, and realise that we are not at the top of the food chain. Those that took my advice loved their time there.

it’s illegal to feed wild animals…. that’s like saying “oh feed the pigeons!!” the quokkas have adequate food in the wild but have adapted to seek to humans as it’s easier for the quokkas, not good for them as they can easily get sick

One tip for day trips…. Do not hire a bike. Use the hop on hop off island bus. Rottnest is bigger, and hillier, than you think. I’m a cyclist and I wouldn’t use one on a day trip.
If you’re staying on the island for a few days, a bike is fine.
