We call the breeze the Fremantle Doctor because it appears to come from the nearby coastal city of Fremantle, (obviously it doesn’t only come from there) and it brings welcome relief from the summertime high temperatures, also you were on the Indian ocean, in the summer the temperatures can be around 22/23 degrees, most quokka’s mainly hang around anywhere there’s food.

Rottnest is Dutch for Rats Nest. When the Dutch were floating around Western Australia in the 1600's, they thought the Quokka's were giant rats. Rottnest also has a dark history. It was a working prison for Aboriginal prisoners from 1838 to 1931. It was pretty brutal. Lovely little island with some stunning little bays. There are a couple of little islands near Rottnest that have seals on them.

Having watched your videos from Australia, I have a feeling of sadness. I will be 70 this year and never in my life had any inclination to either visit or indeed live in Australia. I have lived in England and Ireland, I lived in Japan for a few months many years ago and spent 2 years living and working in New York. I now live in Ukraine - not my best move!
Your videos have shown Australia, and in particular Perth, in a completely fresh light. If I were 30 or 40 years younger, I would seriously consider relocating to this wonderful area. By comparison it paints the UK in a very poor light in terms of the quality of living and the condition of the towns and cities - never mind the weather.
Enjoy the rest of your visit.

I'm not sure if most of the viewers would realise that the first 15 minutes of your journey out of Perth were down the swan river, yes the dolphins were in the river & they live/visit & breed there very well, not many places in the world can say that so close to a city.
On Rottnest you followed the bitumen & passed by most of the signs, they are there to direct you to the best beaches & clear water, you missed most of the best areas.
You must be the only person not to go in or near the ocean on Rottnest! ever! lol🤣
What about the pub/hotels & bakery, there are loads of Quokkas always there. you missed them too.

I remember doing that cycle when I first arrived in Perth back in 1984…there was not much on the island like now..lol.. but when I came back.. I realised I had the worst case of wind burn ever..even with sun screen.. I would have brought ice flask with ice water…lol…loved seeing Perth from the swan river.

You got it right in one. Dutch sea captain Willem de Vlamingh landed on the island, giving it the famous name of Rottnest Island. This means 'rat's nest' in Dutch, as he mistook the island's abundant quokka population for giant rats. Despite its prominence, it took until 1831 before any large presence was established on Wadjemup.

As a Perth local , who has been over to Rottnest countless times , I would go further and encourage visitors to book a night or two on the island if they can. The place is just so peaceful and idyllic in the evenings , once all those boats with day visitors leave, you get to experience the chill of ' Rotto time'.

Thanks for taking us along on your tour of Rottnest (Rat's Nest - Dutch) Island. I really enjoyed the adventure. 😀 Beautiful videography as usual. Just brilliant.
Rats are rodents and Quokka's are marsupials. Quokka's look like little Wallabies to me, and they are so cute.
You need a broad-brimmed hat with some elevation on the top to keep the sun from heating your head and prevent sunburn around your face and the back of your neck.
Always take twice as much water as you think you'll need because you'll probably still run out.
You are not acclimatised and you probably should listen to the people who live here telling you how to look after yourself. Don't get heatstroke, it can put you in the hospital. All the best.

Hi Mac, I just thought you'd like to know, QWOKKA'S are marsupials, so are not rodents. The females have pouches similar to kangaroos, wallabies etc.

45:00 "they look like rats"... Well, that's why the island is called Rottnest. Originally it was discovered by the Dutch, and called the island "Rattennest", which translates to rat's nest, because they thought they were rats. The English later on just changed the pronounciation. Cheers from a Dutch guy in Madrid.

My tip for ice cold water for hours is to freeze it overnight. 1st bottle freeze 3/4 full & top up before go out next day, for immediate use, 2nd leave full when freezing. Use later. Iced cold drinks for literally hrs. Obviously no good in hotel, but many self catering places have an ice box in the fridge. This trip has really highlighted your cam/edit skills.

“Weekend hangout spots?” ….What? …me couch? 🤭😌 Awe Lee love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us all. I feel like I’ve had a lovely day out in the sunshine and done loads of stuff and not spent any money….. you are such a gentleman paying for everything…. but I’m still hungry lad! 😌 Breakfast, steak, buffets, curry and tonight here it’s the Friday night northern law as I am roughly 10 mile south of Manchester to have a chippy tea. 😊 “Has owt moist” as Peter Kay says. Honestly you really make me smile and forget my troubles. I have had a rough few years since me Mam died and I am lost without her. You cheer me up in the darkest moments. Look after yourself out there… if I were there I’d be wearing that red swimsuit Linda wore and Paul Hogan fell head over heels in love when he saw her…in which is one of my top ten films… Crocodile Dundee! I love the ending in the subway station when those tough blokes are having to relay love messages back and forth! 😂 Gutted you are taken. Just my luck! 🙄 Your girlfriend is lovely. Thanks again for sharing your amazing adventures. You are such a warm hearted man. Look after yourself and come home soon…. Or better still go to Benidorm… Now that to me is home! Can’t wait for your next instalment…. What you having for tea tonight… oh wait sorry breakfast! No wonder there’s more Australians in England than Australia….. because as Al Murray says “We are a down to earth sensible country.” Ta rah for now cock. Julie and Jimmy the cat 👩🏻‍🦰🐈‍⬛😻💋xx

Rottnest Island gets its name from a Dutch explorer who thought the quokkas were rats. Rottnest means rat's nest in Dutch. Rotto as the locals call it is a beautiful place. I cycled around it in 1979 and it was a brilliant place to ride. It wasn't that hot in April so no overheating then!

It’s paradise……I also buried $500aud in a small blue divers box on rotto in 2004…it was still there in 2015 when I went back…didn’t take it…it’s still buried…..to be dug up in 2025 when I go back 🤗 ps your never find it but if ya do I’ve left a note 🤗 awesome buddy keep up the great work 🙌🏻🇦🇺

Wonderful watching your trip. You handed the heat way better than I would, and I've lived in WA for 30 years lol.
Two points. 1 : As a licensed drone pilot - your instinct was correct. There is a very small area on Rottnest that you can use your drone but at a fairly limited altitude (there's an airfield on Rotto (YRTI) and Rotto itself is very small, so the regs around airfields make it very limiting), but it's basically not worth the risk because it is literally some of the busiest airspace in Western Australia (for choppers and light aircraft).
2 : Re quokkas looking like Rats - you muppet. :D Did you know what "ROTTNEST" means in Dutch? RAT'S NEST. :D The early Dutch sailors who landed there thought the same thing as you! :D
Really enjoying your adventures. I wish you'd explore the Southwest of WA rather than Sydney, but you do you, you've got a viewer in me you amusing pommy bastard.

12:30 that person’s face underneath that bridge is no other than Bon Scott, former lead singer of AC/DC or “akka dakka”. Fun fact: there is a certain stretch of highway in Perth that was the inspiration behind the song ‘Highway to hell’

Like that City of York ship's anchor you filmed, we found one too. On our way to Queensland we sailed via the Coral Sea, an amazing place of thousands of reefs, perfect for diving. We stayed there for a couple of days, weather was a bit crappy but on the last day we did a final dive. That's when we found a huge anchor, like yours, from about 1800/1850. There was still a timber cross-tree left holding the flukes into the seabed. We got the lift-bags out and gently raised to the surface and the craned it onto deck. When we got to QLD, we donated it to the Cairns Yacht Club. Hope it;s still on their lawn.
