Welcome to Perth, and to Subiaco! You were just around the corner from me at the coffee shop! I am actually from Illinois, but I've been here nearly 20 years. I started out in Tasmania, and then moved to Melbourne for a bit! Feel free to come say hello!
Fun fact, Subiaco, pronounced sooobiaco. Was given its name by Italian priests who came from subiaco Rome, the colours of maroon and yellow are the colours of our state league afl club, Subiaco, which is also the colours of the Rome serie A soccer team.
welcome to Perth, are you staying for a while...we've got some very hot temps over this week or two. Glad to hear you went over to Rottnest. Many stunning beaches all up and down the coast here. I'm down in Rockingham which has a main beach that is just perfect
The conference centre is known by locals as "the hay shed". Not affectionately. Some people call it "the cockroach". Thats mostly based on what it looks like from Kings Park. It was originally intended to be an architectural wonder but it got dumbed down by either Perth city council or the state government (I cant recall which was responsible). Anyway there is talk of rebuilding this much despised landmark and having its frontage on the river, as originally planned. The Belltower at the end of Barrack street had much the same treatment, many decades ago. That houses the bells of st martin in the fields. Roughly 500 years old and beautiful to hear. The bell tower was supposed to be a massive tower offering views over the river and the bells on top but Langley Park is/was (dunno now) one of the only designated airfields in a cbd in the world and the original bell tower plan caused a parochial outcry, much to the frustration of sandgropers like me who have actually travelled. But the result was the bell tower was shrunk to an embarrassing irrelevancy. Then the towers of Elizabeth quay came along and I now have no idea what the status of Langley park is, other than an occasional sports field and exhibition or show area. Its been many years since planes flew off Langley Park for the red bull air competitions and the australia day skyshows.
As someone who comes from Brisbane, I wanted to mention that Moreton Bay has dugongs which are related to manatees. They live off the sea grasses in the bay and are protected, although their habitat is being threatened by the development of marinas in the bay. So far the developers have been unsuccessful in being allowed to expand and affect their ecosystem, but the threat is always there.
We get Dugongs right around here in the West too. They have a community in Shark Bay. I'm going to have to Google whether Dugongs are really related to Manatees, because there're really on opposite sides of the Planet. It might be someway back before you have a common ancestor. Recently found out many Orca's are almost different species from one another, even though they look similar to us. (Different Languages too - which is cool to learn). @coffenut - Did you get a chance to see the little islands off the Perth coast where seals sunbake regularly? They're very cool with tourists, and aren't bothered even when you're quite close. There's a bay a few hours North where they love playing with swimmers too.
You must spend a day in Freemantle - out of Perth. It has oodles of character as many of the buildings hark back to the late 1800s. You won’t be disappointed
Welcome to Subi. Perth is nice, the world's biggest small country town. BUT Best parts of WA are over 500km South or over 1,000km North, particularly Coral bay and Kimberly. BUT Woodside is love/hated in WA - we have the best Labor government that Woodside can buy.
I was so confused when you said 'quokkas' at the 3:00 mark, cause in Australia we have the 'o' as a more open and staccato sound (which I don't believe is a vowel in American English). I suppose the most accurate American pronunciation is 'aw' as in squawk, so it would be pronounced more like 'quawka'. Idk if that makes sense lol. Anyway if ever you're back in Perth you should try and make the trip down to Margaret River. The whole coast there is really beautiful and it's a wine region with plenty of good food places. Oh and Fremantle too, it's the oldest settlement in Perth so it has lots of nice history plus in my opinion a nicer-feeling city centre than the CBD does. Loved the video :)
lol, go back 1 year or two and that tall dark building in the middle of shot at 21:30 wasn't there, I think they only recently completely finished it...though not sure about the insides. That's South Perth and the Zoo would be directly in line between that tall building and the smaller one to it's right. Not sure if you plan on going there. ROFL then I see you were on the bus that goes past the zoo. I used to live in como, which is where that bus goes to...where were you going?
Hey nice work, just a suggestion I think you’re using a dslr to record and the footage is very shaky I would say use your iphone for recording it’s got inbuilt stability which will be much better.
It's a buzz to see such familiar places through a fresh perspective.
ahhh yay!!!
Glad you enjoyed the conference and our beautiful city.

You chose a nice time of year.

Hi Ashley how are you happy Tuesday afternoon and this was amazing video I enjoy your channel
thank you so much!

I didn’t vlog it, but I did head that way for part of the day! Wasn’t my favorite part of town, but found a super good mexican restaurant!
Why did you spell Fremantle incorrectly?
@ I’m obligated to do so! I’m a Victorian. 😉

How long before we have to call you Doctor Fay?
Loved the video so many interesting topics in marine science.
a few years now! and thank you!!
You made me so nostalgic for my first big conference (Otago, N Z). Have the talks been recorded for later viewing of proceedings?
no way!! i lived in dunedin for a bit! unfortunately i don’t think it was recorded
Well, you could be in Perth AND in Europe (Scotland)🤣🤣🤣
so true 🤣🤣 next time!

Is Perth a scenic and lovely city? Do you like it as an American ?
Subiaco is named after the Italian town of the same name..
What is marine mama?
Marine mammals. Eg. Dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals, sea lions, dugongs.
