    Hello everyone! After testing out the RED KOMODO extensively in the past weeks I decided to put together a review that sums up my experience with it.

    P.S: I did debayer the R3d files correctly following the RED guidelines on their youtube channel, and still I had a weird experience with the RED footage in Resolve.

    I don’t know if it already has been said here: but your issues in grading and especially qualifying colors are based in the IPP2 workflow. Since resolves qualifier looks at the actual colors in the node your qualifying in, it only sees log colors in that case. What you could do is grading in your „normal“ Color Management and transform the red colors via a CST for example before qualifying colors

    • @AxiA
      @AxiA  3 роки тому

      Hmm .. I usually start to qualify colors only when I already got rid of the log flatness and saturation. I have a similar node tree for all the cameras I’ve ever used... that didn’t work with the Komodo for some reason :/

    • @DavidSattler
      @DavidSattler 3 роки тому +1

      AxiA did you do the ipp2 workflow via the color management tab in the settings? If so: think of it as a print that happens in the end, while everything you do in the nodes is in the ipp2 color space - which is the flat image

      @@AxiA Hi there, loved your video. The problem with keying is that you are still in LOG, and only till the end of the pipeline is the image converted to Red709. This happens as well with Alexa log files, if you leave the log to Rec709 till the end (which is a better way to grade). A solution is to put a node converting from IPP2 to Rec709, and then another node Rec709 to IPP2 (go to OFX color transforms). In between those two nodes then, your tools will work like Rec709 and selecting will be easier. Check out Juan Melara's video on this

    Solid review. I feel like you’re on the right track as opposed to other “reviewers” This camera was never designed to replace a BMPCC, or similar. This thing is designed for crash cams or very specialized shots. People are taking a hammer, reviewing it as a screwdriver, and complaining about its features. Good job on recognizing what are, in your opinion “flaws” but commenting how they might be flaws in your use case, but not everyone’s. Well done.

    Great video AxiA. You touched upon pretty much all the important stuff plus the post color grading that most videos glass over or skip. This is definitely my next camera, for two of the reasons you mentioned: 1) entering into the Red ecosystem, and 2) bragging rights.
    Coming from mostly Canon cameras, I already have cine lenses and batteries I can use on the Komodo (I was hoping you'd mention these two things: the Canon batteries and EF/RF mount system). And to be able to shoot short and feature length low budget films, this is going to be a perfect match for me personally.

  • @christianjadot4459

    To me, Blackmagic has a weird skin tone "tone mapped" look which really bugs me.
    The Global Shutter from the test footage is what made me go with the Komodo, so I am now waiting for it. (I considered the Sony A7SIII and the BMPCC 6k). The RED just won out for what I am looking for. But all these cameras are so close in image quality, it is the little things making the difference.
    With all that being said, I am still considering a BMPCC 4K for my B-Cam.

  • @MarcusRFilms
    @MarcusRFilms 3 роки тому +1

    None of the Reds have those types of preamps though. I really think because of the form factor people are doing comparisons so cameras that are cheaper, but it wasn’t designed to be an A camera. So you won’t get those features we have on the Pocket 6K or Z Cam, or an URSA Mini Pro or C200. I rented it for few days. Apples and oranges in comparison with my BMPCC6K. Definitely lots or pros and cons to buying one. But I loved your cinematic piece and your closing remarks were spot on! Great job

    The Komodo is a gorgeous little camera but considering it was meant as a crash camera and not with the consumer market in mind I haven't ever felt enamored enough to order one. It's too expensive for what it offers. Gorgeous raw colors, global shutter, and wireless antenna but I can do without all that.

    What you mention with qualifiers is probably an issue with interpreting the raw color directly. This is why Red suggests converting to their LOG3G10 profile before doing ANYTHING color related. First node can be a color space transform, then some grading nodes, then the LUT created in RedcineX/wherever, or you can do it through the project setup, so that it's set to output to LOG directly after base adjustments. Experiment with doing it different ways if you still have the color selection issue. You set your color temp, ISO, etc, before the conversion to LOG. Once it's in log, color selection should be a LOT more predictable, as you're working with a more normal color space, not giant 16 bit linear raw. Hope this helps :)

    • @AxiA
      @AxiA  3 роки тому +1

      I did all that. I followed their guidelines on their UA-cam channel on how to set up a resolve project ... still I had all those problems..!

    • @SCrowley91
      @SCrowley91 3 роки тому

      @@AxiA Hmm, that's really weird. Are you on a new enough version? The compression in the Komodo is actually different than other red cameras, using a different compression method (wavlet vs cosine), so it's not impossible that it was an issue decoding that. Full support for the new codec was only officially added in the last month or two; the footage has been playing back fine, but I imagine there were at least a few behind the scenes things they had to change.
      It may also just be that log3g10 is SO flat, and sometimes getting selections on such a flat image can be difficult. It may feel more natural to someone who works with Arri's log than the flatter logs like slog2 or clog1/2. Did you try doing some of the work in a later node, after contrast/saturation has been added? Did it still have the same issue? If so, I'd have to think it's a software issue, because once the color transforms have been applied, the program shouldn't care what it's working with.
      Only other thing I can think of is if you're decompression settings are too low, it may be causing issues as well. Low decompression settings can cause color issues, and at many lower settings the color de-noising is actually completely disabled, though they wouldn't actually show up in the final export, just playback.

    You spilled the beans at the end....its more about self-validation and showing off of the brand and hoping ill informed clients might fall for the name. You even justified it with a stereotypical high end iphone with a cheap android comparison. (How about high end android by the way? My phone costs a lot more than iphone pro max and i wouldn't give it up for anything)
    I own a Komodo (for almost 2 years now) and FX3, owned Blackmagic 6k before these and no there is no dynamic range advantage with Komodo over them. You can checkout CineD lab tests and I agree with them based on my experience. Blackmagic allows highlight recovery in post where as Komodo does recovery within the camera (RED confirmed this). At the end DR is pretty similar unless you're doing something wrong coz each of these cameras have their DR stops distributed differently, so you cant expose them all the same and expect same results.
    I too fell for the fluff early on, convinced myself Komodo must be somehow much better because it is Red. Jared Land (RED CEO) is not a fool to give us a camera at $6000 that competes with his own $30k cameras. Its a pretty good camera that is on par in image quality with C70, A7siii, Fx3, FX6, Blackmagic 6k except at a higher cost but gives you the pride and satisfaction and showing off ability of owning a Red camera. Sometimes it works too. Maybe you'll feel more passionate about your work or some clients might feel more at ease with your "professional gear". And may be if you want to upgrade to a Red Raptor down the line and keep this a a b-cam keeping the workflow consistent. But also be aware that there will be a lot of situations where you'll hope you have an FX3 or C70 handy with you because Komodo can slow you down considerably and you may not have that luxury always. You need to be aware of temperature changes, like day to evening shots or even going from indoor to putdoor or viceverca and do blackshading everytime. Or else you could ruin your image with heavy green tint. Also, forget using it in lowlight unless you're in very controlled environments.
    For me combination of Komodo + FX3 works perfectly. But I'm pretty sure, the quality of my output wont be impacted if I replace my Komodo with another FX3 or C70. Hopefully this input will help someone considering getting a Komodo. Coz its hard to find honest opinion aboutv this camera on youtube. Not because youtubers or lying to you or misleading you, but for most of them purchasing Red branded camera is feels like a milestone of sorts. Its hard to be honest with ourselves let alone others when we are filled with fascination and pride.
    If this makes you feel any better Greig Fraser (DP of Dune, Batman, Star Ward rogue one etc) just shot a Hollywood sci-fi movie (True Love... directed by Gareth Edwards of Rogue One and Godzilla) with Sony FX3. Not as B-cam, its the only cam. If its good enough for them, I guess its good enough for us you and me. If you can afford a Komodo and accessories needed and aware of its quirks....great fo for it. But dont stretch your budget otherwise. Get an FX3 or Fuji X-H2s and spend the rest on lighting and sound and get to work. You'll thank yourself later.

    For those asking how doest it compares directly to the BMPCC 4k/6k I would say that the KOMODO wins easily in the dynamic range where I noticed the most difference between the cameras. Colors in my opinion are also slightly better on the Komodo... HOWEVER, the black magic cameras are much easier to grade, and I think that's why there isn't a lot of super cinematic footage done with the KOMODO yet... Because it's not easy to grade unless you know how to color in a professional way. I'm not buying a KOMODO myself, because I don't think might be worth the money difference from BM cameras, although it's superior in many aspects.

    • @EugeniaLoli
      @EugeniaLoli 3 роки тому +2

      I consider RED much easier to grade than BRAW. I can break apart BRAW much easier because in order to get the kodak look on braw you need to do so much work on it, that even its 12bit-ness can't save it. RED on the other hand has more "neutral" and "muted" colors by default (not radioactive colors as found on Sony sensors that Blackmagic is also using), which makes getting the film look much easier. The only place where BMPCC 4k/6k is better is in the UI, and speed of BRAW editing (the fastest raw to decode). Between a BMPCC 6k and a Red Komodo, to be honest, I prefer a Canon C70.

    On your point regarding lack of assignable buttons to do false color and other things, RED Customer Support mentioned to me that for them, they consider that functionality is best reserved to be utilized on your monitor. The Osee G7 monitor has a great scene selector that allows you to quickly switch between false color, waveforms, vectorscopes, etc (all with custom layouts). I think that would be a good alternative to physical buttons. I always got them all confused anyways on my Scarlet-W. In terms of grading and the lack of control, I suspect you might be doing something weird. Are you sure you're applying your qualifiers before the LUT? I've never had any issues with grading R3D with predictable and precise control. I noticed your shots on the Rise & Fall video have a strong color cast on it. Maybe that messed with the color qualifiers. It could probably have used a nice color chart to calibrate things as I was surprised you didn't apply any creative LUTs on it :)

      It's all relative. Some of these companies charge over $100K for one, and then say it's because the market is small and they need to recoup their R&D costs. But the market is small because the camera costs $100K, lol. Even RED was extremely disruptive when their first camera came out because it was priced so far under the then-current offerings from other companies. BM has shown you can make a completely capable camera for not much more than $1K. And yeah, the form factor sucks, but they could easily change that. There is no reason any of these cameras need to cost $10K+ other than people pay it and they make a ton of money doing so.

      Maybe you just buy a Komodo instead a dragon. Then you have a Komodo + 12k worth glass 😂 Only a question of perspective depending on what you want and what's your market.

      Yeah true, but that means you really need to choose your screen wisely because the camera doesn’t help you in that way. I wanted to warn people from this issue
