Happy Holidays Yogis! I'm happy to introduce a new Yin Yoga series on my channel where we will focus on the meridians :) The meridians come from traditional chinese medicine and are thought to conduct energy throughout the body, similar to how chakras allow the flow of energy through the body. In Yin Yoga, the meridians help to move "qi" (chi) into our organs and connective tissues.
Today we will focus on the kidney meridian which supports healthy kidney function and the asanas will focus on the hips (inner thighs and groin) as well as the spine through backbends and forward folds. This is a lovely practice to do when you've been celebrating a little bit too much ;) Two blocks will be used for this class!
What is Yin Yoga? Yin yoga is often called the Yoga of the joints because unlike other styles of yoga, the emphasis is not on the muscles but on the deep connective tissue. Connective tissue is made up of fascia, ligaments and tendons which surround and form your joints. Yin yoga improves the range of motion in your joints and also strengthens them. The results and benefits are more flexibility and greater range of motion and also more stability within your joints. Although your muscles will also be stretched, that is not the focus of the practice. It is best to practice yin yoga while your muscles are cold and NOT warmed up, even if that sounds counter intuitive. The reason we do this is so that we can send the "stress" and the "Stretch" to the connective tissues. If the muscles are warm they will steal the focus away from the joints.
There are 3 principles of Yin Yoga.
1. Find your edge
2. Be still
3. Hold the pose
Use as many props as needed in Yin Yoga! Blocks, bolsters and straps are all great ways to support your body to make sure you are respecting your edge and not going too far.

Cheers for the Video! Apologies for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Hanristian Pectorial Humdinger (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for revealing the secret to get rid of gallstones without the headache. I spent pretty much the whole practice crying on my mat. What a release! I had to put my dog down recently and today would be his 14th birthday. I was able to let out some good tears during this practice, especially during winged dragon. Those hip releases are always "tear releases" for me. Thank you for creating this video. I don't feel as alone when you are on my computer instructing me. XOXO Namaste.
I had a similar experience, my beloved cat passed away not long ago and I am still trying to deal with his loss, at the end of the practice, I just burst into tears...
Did this during my first UTI as an adult (yay!! XD) to give a boost to my kidneys. Was also very calming which was much needed cause it was an acute infection that came on fast and warranted a trip to the ER 😅thank you as always for these amazing yin practices, afterwards I always feel like I just got a massage :)

Hi Kassandra, when I try to do the winged dragon pose with my right leg back I just can not seem to do it with my foot extended. I have to curl my toes under otherwise the inner side of my knee cap feels like its 'floating'. Could this be to do with how 'blocked' my meridians are? Ive had trouble with my whole right side for years (even needing 2 separate surgeries which probably could have been avoided if id discovered yoga as a teenager!). Thank you, I love this sequence, its helping me to heal through 'autoimmunity' thats actually a result of poor kidney function. Keep up the great work!

i loved this class but i cannot go down to my elbows on the one pose around minute 18. I am fully upright, cannot go any further due to extremely tight hips, can you help with the modification if I am with straight arms?
What is the purpose of holding the thumb and index fingers? Always been curious as it seems to be of some important significance in all yoga. Can anyone guide me to some good reading material that covers these kind of topics? tia
I know this is really late, but it's a mudra. Different hand positions allow energy to flow for specific reasons. Just look up mudra. ✌

A really thick book or a dense pillow/couch cushion will work :)
the kidney meridians are on the front of the torso and inner front part of legs..not the back.
It does travel up the spine and into the kidneys. You're correct about torso and inner leg, which is why the class is focusing on inner thighs and poses that nurture the spine and open the chest like sphinx and seal :) This explains it really well: www.yinyoga.com/ys1_3.2.5.1_lowerbody_meridians.php
