      Indeed, you're 100% correct. That's the very focal point of the gospel. And John Lennox knows that full well. The glory of the gospel is that Christ died (and as such paid the sacrificial price) for our sins, once for all (past, present, and future). Something we cannot do. The very moment we understand that and place our trust in Him, the One who accomplished what we could never do, God's word tells us we are then the children of God. Christ lives, and he gives the life of God to all who trust Him, thus giving believers the power to live for Him.

    1:18:26 From this point on Jordan repeatedly reframes the conversation to discuss the "psychological application" or utility of the Christian story, and each time, John brings the conversation back to gospel. I applaud John for bringing the abstract conversation to the reality of the hope we have in Christ! 👏 🙏

    • @DorinStanciu09
      @DorinStanciu09 Рік тому +8

      @@so_zemlji Cristianity claims that Jesus is God the creator of all things. The Old Testament and even the New doesn't teach that. In fact Jesus talks about his father and his god as beeing THE GOD(Joan 20:17). So anyone who tries to promote Jesus as the creator makes a very big error and creates big confusions, an error which is mantained for 2000years now. So a man who tries to understand all these with his mind is unable to do that . Probably this is the reason we will not see Jordan declaring himself as beeing a christian. How could he understand Jesus is God and creator , when everywhere in the Gospels Jesus is declaring that his Father is THE GOD.

    • @matthewizzo3350
      @matthewizzo3350 Рік тому +106

      @@DorinStanciu09you have no conception of the trinity, Jesus is the physical incarnation of the invisible God. God has taken human form several times throughout the Bible. For example, He visited Abraham in the tent. Jesus literally says before “Abraham was, I am.”, he also says “I and the father are one.” Only God can Judge, yet Jesus can judge. Jesus IS God.

In theory, robot can be programmed to move its hand when it touches hot surface. How do I know its having the experience of hot using test tube(Deduction/induction). The only thing i am certain of is that i have experience of hot. This experience can only come from entity that can already experience existence (Allah-one/indivisible/self-sufficient/unique/All-Loving infinite perfection).

      He's certainly always had a particularly serious (for lack of a better word) experience of the Divine than the likes of Dr Lennox. Funny, given the reputation Irish Catholics tend to have! I have to imagine it has more to do with disposition and personal experience than sect, though. JBP has only found faith fairly recently, while Lennox has had his whole life and career to perhaps be at peace with it all.
      Interesting stuff, to say nothing of the discussion itself. Anyway, take care and God bless (and please pray my ex finds Him!)

      @@Darko.Damjanovic So until when are you going to remain in your "guessing game"? You are just going to figure everything after you die? If you believe we were created by something or someone, isnt it common sense that you search for that truth? Christians always attach Jesus in any conversation because they cant help but share it because for them the experience that they had must be shared. Its not as if they are shoving it down everyones throat. You can say no if you want. Whats weird is others like Islam, Buddism, Judaism etc. If they claim that what they have is the truth, which is the answer to everything, then why arent they sharing it with everyone? Why is it only Christians? To the point of Christians even dying for sharing the truth that they claim that they discovered? Why is that? In addition, Jesus commanded to share the news of salvation to everyone. My problem is with people like you who are so mad when a Christian talks about Jesus. Jordan did not have any problem with it, why should you? You can always say no. Whats the big deal? whats your deal?

      JP should rethink to the slow down on the judeo-christian moniker. If going to speak of Abrahamic religion then shouldnt it be judeo-christian-islam traditions? The entire world let alone much of the West do not believe in Abrahamic religions. It is narrowing to speak of it as encompassing the entire world let alone just judeo-christian aspects of the 3 pronged abrahamic religions. To speak of judeo-christian as everyone in the world will understand him or to speak of it in a term that leaves out the Islam aspect of it puts a shadow over the entire premises of these conversations. It creates a blind spot, which can be world destabilizing in its affect which is evident in how the world, especially in the West and middle east, have been going over the past 2000 years. Something is wrong and not working. And it seems JP has hit a wall in his ability to analyze it unbiasedly.

    • @jayjaygeez
      @jayjaygeez Рік тому +44

      @@GreyForceTK It's "Judeo-Christian" because Islam isn't truly an Abrahamic religion, contrary to Muhammad's claims. At a fundamental level, the Qur'anic worldview does not match the Biblical worldview. This is repeatedly, and I mean repeatedly, evident when studying and comparing the Qur'an to the Bible. For that reason, Islam isn't included in discussing the West's religious influences - it just didn't really have much, if anything, to do with shaping Western thought. That's why the Islamic perspective is usually left out of the conversation about the Western conception of God.
      And I suppose JP could be clearer about defining what he means when he says "Judeo-Christian", but I think that's better left to the viewer to find out for themselves rather than having him use time in these discussions to recap information most people choosing to watch them probably already have at least somewhat of a grasp on. These are not entry-level discussions. I don't think there's any way to have this particular discussion in a way that just anyone from any culture worldwide could easily understand even if he did take some time to explain, honestly.

And conversely, his refusal to succumb to the woke bullying that tries to force a change of belief without the necessary logical argument that would warrant such a change. I don’t think you understand the notion of Free Will,
      (or know the Biblical narrative
      that God INSISTED to give us Free Will)
      and the repercussions that flow from it.
      If God showed up in the sky for all to see…
      (as you and so many atheists claim they would want God to do)
      well then
      BY DOING SO…
      God would STUMP the
      Free Will of people…
      because then there wouldn’t be anyway for people to choose to
      NOT believe in God

      @@Youttubeuser20932your “#2” point that your argument rests on has no proof or substance. It is a simple restatement of the proposition that free will doesn’t exist. And to assume that, because science can reveal the atomic and subatomic world, that fundamental truth stops at that point is to discard the possibility of the existence of anything nonphysical. As detailed in this video, however, nonphysical things, such as morality and love, are real and do truly exist beyond evolutionary programming and brain chemistry.
      I believe I have free will because of the following:
      1) The order and majesty of the universe unilaterally insists on the existence of an intelligent designer. To believe that it sprang into existence from nothing is absolutely illogical and far more preposterous than belief in a higher power.
      2) The Bible, through uncanny historical and scientific accuracy, unparalleled timeless wisdom, verified prophecy, and 100% congruency and synergy across all of its books, shows itself to be of divine origin.
      3) Having identified that the Bible is divinely inspired, free will is an absolute truth. The Bible would not extend an invitation to its readers if God did not build within them an ability to make their own choices. Additionally, the Bible states that God wants to become friends with each one of us, and enjoys us showing our love to him. Would this make any sense if we were pre-programmed? If I programmed a robot to say it loves me, would that love be genuine? The honest expression of any emotion is absolutely contingent upon the existence of free will.
      4) The absence of free will absolutely absolves every person of responsibility in any capacity. To me, this is a disgusting nightmare and not one that I choose to give any weight to. I am a human, made in the image of God, and I have been given the gift of life that I am free to use in any capacity. It is the most precious gift anyone could ever receive. The nightmarish alternative to a life of free will is not a reality that fits the personality of the creator who has described himself in the Bible.

    Dr Lennox is to me what CS Lewis was to him. An inspiration. A shining light. A calm, rational and logical voice amongst so much dogma and aggression. And Jordan (first name basis of course) has a truly remarkable mind. Not only is he a great defender of the faith but a great debator on a magnificently wide range of subjects. It seems to me he is the modern Socrates, constantly challenging our presuppositions and expanding our range of knowledge. I am in awe of both these people, they both give me strength in my life. I am grateful for their existence and gracious participation in this world and I wish them health and happiness and long service to the Lord. Thank you both. Oh, maybe I'm also envious of you both too. I can't discount or ignore that. I haven't the intellect or emotional maturity to fully grasp the enormity of what you are saying. But I want to. And I try. I am knocking and hoping that Jesus is just busy running a bath or making a cup of tea.

      Peterson is NOT a defender of the faith if you are talking about Christianity. He is hopelessly lost. Pray for him. By the way, Jesus is not busy and intellect is actually an impediment to people like Peterson. He tries to find the meaning hidden in the scriptures and takes everything as a metaphor instead of seeing the clear meaning of God’s words.

      Thanks@@valley5617, I am finding intellect an impediment. Not that I'm intelligent by any stretch, but questions keep rearing their head. I personally find people like Peterson impressive and comforting as they commit themselves to Christ despite their propensity to question and interpret everything. Obviously, I don't know Jordan, so cannot comment on his personal relationship with God, but I take something from his insights. I appreciate an unfettered belief in God would solve all of my issues but unfortunately I still at the stage where I am dependent on the wisdom and guidance of others.

      What's up brother I don't know your life or situation but in regards to your knocking comment I wanted to say that sometimes when we knock we get answer that we're not expecting and if we're expecting it to be in a certain way it can conceal the answer from us. I think the saying "take one step towards God and he will take two towards you" is true and he knows the heart so if you're asking him and walking in Jesus' teachings with the right intentions and reading the word I would just encourage you to keep going and it's very possible that if you walk the right way- even though it might not feel like much progress you could hit a breakthrough and look back and see how necessary all the seeking was.
      --
      I sent this comment to someone who asked me a question recently asking how to maintain his faith (not that I'm perfect or this amazing teacher or something) and I felt like sharing it to you if it's of any interest- but my bad if I'm making any presumptions. God bless you bro.
      The comment:
      "1. Ask God to keep your faith regularly and to grow it
      2. Confess doubts and worries and anxieties and also sins to God articulately and feel ok about putting in the open to him
      3. It's ok to question your faith but just beware of the lie that pessimism or negativity is the same as truth or realism. Assume God knows something you don't and just try to obey him and do right and spiritually I think things fall into place there. I think asking for God's will to be done and not your own will can be a powerful thing
      4. Stay reading God's Word in the bible regularly and consistently- know why you're doing it and dont treat it like a chore, try to understand it and spend time around Christians asking them about it (even online or at church)
      Philippians 4 " do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
      1 Peter 5 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen."
      Also 5. Lifestyle has an affect on our mental state tbh: so if you're looking after yourself and obeying God and addressing/confessing sin you're basically taking care of your body which can be a dwelling place for God's Spirit
      Galatians 5:16 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Sorry if this is a lot of information but I guess lastly if you're focusing on the most important things are which loving people, loving God, obeying God, being truthful and walking in the Spirit (gal 5:22-23) then things work for themselves and even if things aren't going perfect you'll know you're doing the most important thing. Remember that God does the work in us and it's not our own doing we just have to have the faith and walk forward to receive it so if you feel like you dont have strength just ask God about all of it directly and keep on expressing things to him because he's faithful. Remember God's outcome is always better even if it doesnt seem like it and if God isn't for something it will never flourish in the long run"

      “Faith” names the method of religion, the essence of its epistemology; and, as the Oxford English Dictionary states, the belief in some “higher unseen power” is the basic content of religion, its distinctive view of reality, its metaphysics. This higher power is not always conceived as a personal God; some religions construe it as an impersonal dimension of some kind. The common denominator is the belief in the supernatural - in some entity, attribute, or force transcending and controlling this world in which we live."

    That final expansion from John about the Lazarus story and how it intertwined with exactly what Jordan experiences in clinical studies on people with phobias was such an amazing correlation. It seems like Jordan does his best to not acknowledge the importance of believing in Christ and the New Testament for a real future salvation and resurrection in the literal sense, but as a literary metaphor for the transformation of the psyche more-so. That final correlation John made with Lazarus and Jordan’s real life work is just soooooo deep almost unbelievable how pertinent and real the story and the meaning is if you actually believe it as a reality and not as a fable. Seems like Jordan deals in the possibilities and potentials of orienting yourself towards the “model” of Christ as like a self help mechanism, but won’t fully accept the faith and put his trust in Christ as God for his own salvation. I say it seems because I don’t know his heart, but I just don’t see him ever enter those deeper waters that John was bringing the conversation towards. Great stuff

They look for a label to attach to you and then hurl insults at the “group” you belong to. As an African..born in Zimbabwe, l have always struggled with deep thoughts about Christianity. As a person who accepted Christ in 2017, l have fallen so many times. But above all l have always had a deep voice in me that as someone that not only reads the bible but analyses it to extract its principles and apply it into modern societies. That has propelled me in questioning a lot of things within Christian spheres but l have always thought it was not normal as an Academic also to think so broadly because l find most Christians in Africa, shallow and mislead by shallow leaders. I am happy to see such deep thinkers weaving their careers, experience and love of God in one conversation. I t has pushed me in reading the bible and exposing myself to other philosophers so as to broaden my understanding on Christ, the world and myself as a whole. My friend played this podcast in class at the University of Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg South Africa. Our class is opposite the Hall that has most of Darwin's archeological evidence on Human evolution.

    Doctors Peterson and Lenox, I enjoy listening to your views. Admittedly, much of your lexicon exceeds my ability to assimilate your points. Certainly, it is my limitation, yet I truly do desire to comprehend. I find myself pausing often and replaying to glean the pearls you have cast out to us.
    This precept of science coming from God, as Dr Lenox explained, as opposed to science versus atheism, was the very moment I set about becoming Christian. It was my ‘Aha’ moment. This finally satisfied my scientific bias and connected me to God. It only took me 64 years of life to grasp the connection.
    That said, the depth of the conversation was brilliant and edifying. I was enlightened by nearly every word the two of you had spoken. It took my understanding to a much higher level - and I’m merely at the halfway point. Wow, this is great, stimulating stuff!
