I agree that you should mention the problems so people can be more informed. It’s just a recounting of the facts after all. And yes, I have the same grapefruit pocket planner and same issues, maybe even worse on the outside edges, but i dealt with it using a blow dryer to sort of melt glue and cleaned everything off in the whole planner. I also conditioned mine while I was at it… When I contacted moterm they seemed to know about the issue and were apologetic and offered a coupon code 😅 I was more worried it was mold which is a health issue! But the glue residue isn’t great either. Since we are both in Europe and we bought around the same time, I think we got the same batch of planners with the issues. You are right that at the current price, moterm isn’t really cheap anymore… it would probably be better to go for the higher quality options out there. Personally, I got sucked in because of the color, I really like grapefruit so I suppose it made me more willing to do more to keep my planner. I hope you are able to resolve the issues and/or sell if you want to move on. We all have to make that judgement for ourselves.
Thanks for commenting and getting the facts straight on your end 😊 With what did you condition it? And the more important question is - did it change the color?! And of course I hope that the glue problem is now solved, but only time can tell that. I think now that I have made this video I can take my blow dryer and try to fix the issue. I'm maybe just worried that I loose it and ruin the whole thing 😅 That's why I wanted to make this video first. And it doesn't feel good to start fixing a hundred euro planner but in the end it's not worth that much anymore so I might as well do it.
@ Well if you can’t use it, then we have to do something so that’s why I just tried. So far no white has come back, maybe there was too much glue usage and it was excess - who knows! I just used the same renapur leather conditioner that I have for my tns and it does make it darker a little. Some people prefer to use some other cleaning sprays or stuff made for purses because it can change the feel of the leather if you put too much. It’s like lotioning up your leather skin 😅
I got one comment that it could only be natural oils, but I'm hesitant to believe that, because why wouldn't Moterm had said so themselves. For me that would have sounded so much better than what they actually said. From one comment I learned that My Moxie Dreams has also mentioned in their latest video a similar issue with their black Moterm. I haven't had yet time to watch that video.
Oh no, My Moxie Dreams latest video is about stickers and it's long, so I don't know if I can watch it 😅 Sticker talk is not my jam at all. But if you do, I would love a time stamp where she mentions the Moterm problem, if she does it in that video.
@@Katiplans I will check and see but regarding natural oils - there is a type of leather where blooming can happen where seems whitish but not only at the seams - that is weird!
To me it doesn’t look like glue. It looks more like bloom (also called Spue) which is very common in leather items. It’s when the natural oils in the leather come to the surface during handling, then the oils cool and look white. Which explains why it can be heated and massaged back into the leather and then appear again somewhere else. If that’s what it is, it’s not a defect but actually a natural part of owning leather items. Happens a lot with saddles, bridles etc. Try using a hairdryer on low setting to melt and massage to oils back in 😊
Thank your for commenting 🙏🏻 I have to admit I like your theory / explanation, but I have a few hesitations / questions about it. 1) Is bloom / Spue also sticky? 2) If it would be natural oils, why wouldn't Moterm say so? (It would sound so much better than poor storing conditions and glue residue.) 3) Why would the natural oils only surface from the seams? 4) And why would have this (natural oils) problem surfaced only now although there has been Moterm products for years? I so want to believe your theory, but those above mentioned points make me doubt it...
@ Hi again 🙋🏻♀️ I forgot to say before that I really enjoy your channel and videos 🥰 So in regards to your questions: Yes, bloom tends to feel gummy, waxy or sticky. It can also feel powdery but that’s not the case here. As to why Moterm didn’t say that, my guess is that they don’t know. Remember, they’re a overseas company making mass market leather goods and those who are answering customer emails (or the company as a whole for that matter) probably don’t have a lot of knowledge about fine leather craftsmanship. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, I’ve had bloom show up on a Gillio, it’s just the nature of leather. As to where it shows up, that’s hit or miss, it can show up anywhere. My guess is that when planners are touched it’s typically on the larger surfaces (front, back and spine) so those parts get continually massaged. No one really spends any time handling the seams though so the bloom cools and sits there and gets noticed. And to your last question: it’s probably showing up now because Moterm veg tan leather is fairly recent. Before there was only the pressed pebbled variety on Amazon which has been around longer (I bought my first in (2019). Those are pretty much bomb proof, most of the leather’s natural qualities are gone because their highly chemically processed. The vegetable tanning process is very different from those, maybe Moterm hasn’t quite figured that out. So, yeah I think that’s what’s going on, and if it is, it’s not something harmful (like mold would be) but it’s also not something a manufacturer can predict ahead of time. It’s just the nature of the product and to avoid it one would have to stick to highly processed chemical blasted leather or the vegan marketed non leather. Gosh, sorry for writing a whole novel here, I’ll shut up now, hopefully at least some of this helped 😄😄 Christine
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏻 It always feels good to get nice feedback 😊 And thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I have to admit I'm a bit confused by all of this now 😅 I think I now first need to treat my grapefruit and see if I get rid of the whiteness and stickiness. After that I will decide my next steps. But I think no matter if this problem is natural or warehouse conditions, I will have to stand to my decision not to buy Moterms anymore. I rather invest in an other brand where I can be sure to enjoy the product, because there is still the smell problem, which I don't think has a solution. If I don't enjoy the smell of the Moterm leathers, it's better to avoid them.
@@Katiplans You’re very welcome and Thank You for putting up with my long winded post 😄😄 Yes try the hairdryer on it to melt to oils back in, or heat and buff it off with a soft cloth ( like an old t shirt). And I agree with you 100%, if you’re going to spend your hard earned money on something, then it has to make you happy. And it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or says because they don’t have to live with it, look at it or handle it every day. There are plenty of brands out there to choose from. And I remember your video when you unboxed your plum pocket, you were so cute and excited. I hope you find something to replace it that brings you the same joy as you had in that video 🥰
7:03 I had the same issue when I unboxed my Motern Travelers Notebook. I recommend using a leather balm. I used the brand Renapur that Travelers Company uses and rub out those white spots then leave it out in the sun to dry. Hope this helps!
Thank you for commenting 🙏🏻 I'm glad to hear you found a way to get rid of those white spots. But I still think your product shouldn't arrive in such condition.
@ you’re absolutely right they shouldn’t arrive in that condition. I just wouldn’t be surprised if they just been sitting there for months and they didn’t pass real inspection.
Thanks for sharing your honest review. It is very much appreciated. Too often people are too afraid to share anything negative about products and that is most unfortunate. Like you I am super sensitive to touch and smells so I would not be able to use the planner. I would have to end up moving it on as I would never really be able to be happy using it knowing the issues. When one is paying good money for a planner then there is an expectation of lasting quality. I hope that you are still able to continue to enjoy using your other Moterm products. I would still contact Moterm and let them know of the problems that you have encountered so that they know there are more people that are also encountering the same issues as you have.
Thank you for commenting and understanding my point of view. You (and others who have commented about the same thing) are right that I should contact Moterm. I will do it. I don't want to but it's the right thing to do. I probably will also try the blow dryer tip now that I have been able to catch on video what is wrong with the planner. Maybe it could still become a storage binder if I get rid of the stickiness 🤞🏻 An expensive storage binder but even that is better than nothing...
I understand that you can remove odd smells by placing the item in a plastic bag with a very (over-ripe) banana for a couple of days, at least this works for vintage items.
Thank you! I also had this problem with a veg tan moterm and was looking for reviews or videos on it. I immediately thought it was mold and am on my 3rd time trying to fix it. I almost don't want it now but it was exactly what I wanted in size and color (my only TN size and expanded) plus my 1st moterm.
Oh no, I'm so sorry that your first Moterm has the glue residue issue. I'm hoping you get help with the blow dryer tip. Did you notice Linda's comment here? She told what she did with her Moterm. I would be happy to hear back from you if you get the problem fixed with heat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you get the 'mold' issue fixed 🤞🏻 Thank you for commenting - I'm so happy that this video found you 😊
This is an issue with veg tan leather. I have had this same problem with leather shoes. But yes this happens to all of my veg tan moterm covers. I resolve it with leather cleaner and warming up the leather just with my hands.
Thank you for commenting 🙏🏻 I'm still a bit confused why Moterm themselves don't know / say about this natural problem if it really is just that. In my mind it should be the company who claims it's part of the product characteristics and not the customers 😅
If you bought that recently from AliExpress, I had an issue with the plum veg tanned leather. It had white coating on it and a funny smell too. I attempted to return it and the response from the company was that it was mold/mildew due to high humidity where they store the covers. They gave me a small refund if I chose to keep it. I love the color so much I did keep it, but I had to clean it with a leather cleaner. I have purchased other moterm covers from amazon and had no issues. I just had problems from venders overseas.
Thank you for commenting 🙏🏻 (I don't know where you comment was hiding three days, because I just saw it now.) I'm shocked to hear that they said it's mold. I think you should have gotten a full refund in that case.
I stopped buying Moterms after I had expanded the older pebbled "leather" flyleaf because the holes were too small to comfortably slide on the rings. Leather (skin) doesn't have woven fibers.
Oh, I'm intrigued and have so many questions... But those flyleafs aren't only made out of leather. There clearly is also something else inside. But you claim that the leather itself had woven fibers... that's wild. One explanation could be that they use so poor quality leather that they add something to it in the process to make it more durable. It would had been interesting to disassemble that Moterm... I once dismantled a filofax to see how it was build and why it didn't lay flat 😅
Thank you for commenting 🙏🏻 I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm so confused now what is going on and what the problem really is... But I'm so sad to learn that others have problems with their covers too. And I thought I was the only one 🙄

To me all the moterm products I’ve owned smell very strong like must. It was worse in veg tan. I thought I must be the only person that was smelling it. It’s worn down as I’ve used it. But it’s still there. I wonder if they store them in humidity. It’s such a huge bummer.
