Watch the Honda Pioneer 1000-5 tackle snow and ice in our full review here: ua-cam.com/video/hbKaRaQsj4Y/v-deo.html
At 2:26, you state that the Talon has a "rear LOCKING differential" Is it really a differential and does it really unlock?
Or, have you misspoken?
Essentially all UTVs lack a rear differential. They instead have rear spools, but incorrectly call them differentials. A spool implies that both wheels will ALWAYS spin at identical speeds. To date, Polaris has had the only exception to this, and even it is not truly a differential. The Polaris has what they call 'Turf mode'. It enables the UTV (only when in two wheel drive) to disengage one of the rear axles. This relegates the vehicle to ONE WHEEL DRIVE, as opposed to differentially driving both wheels. This is fakery in my view.
If Honda is the first to actually offer a rear differential and a locking one at that!, this is a really big deal - every bit as big as the transmission and ibrake system.
Pro trick : watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Willie Erik Yup, been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :)
Nice report Stephen. Can’t wait to see you put that through its paces!
I have been waiting so long for this
This guy def knows his stuff. Great vids always. Thanx
Now I'm waiting to hear what the price of all this 'goodness' will cost us.
Good video Stephen!
For anyone wondering, that engine and 6 speed transmission are incredible. I’ve had them on a Honda Pioneer 1000-5 for years and they are bulletproof. Plenty of power... these machines will be the real deal.
Super awesome of Honda, awesome review
Interested in the gearing, wondering if it will crawl and hawl!
Not sold on the limited slip front diff, that needs to be a straight up selectable locker option.
I agree, but it seems to work well in the Pioneer 1000.
Hey @1978JWJ did you watch the Video ? They said two speed Transfer case .. I am guessing 5 speed trans
Hey Mike, the video said nothing about the gear ratios, like what is the low gear ratio in that xfer case or what is the final crawl ratio. You know, the important info.
Which do you think is better for Timmins, Northern Ontario?
Hey I’m in this video!! I’m in the passenger in the white helmet in those first photos! ❤️❤️❤️
Finally! Honda quality in a true sport sxs.
Great overview Stephen. I am anxious to see you test it. I'm a little disappointed that they don't have a 60" version of the R model. That's a big oversight in my opinion. I'm sure it will be a great machine overall. No 60" machine to compete with Maverick Sport though means lost sales. I hope it isn't priced a lot higher than the competition. Honda has a tendency to do that, at least in Canada anyway.
great video
Wheres the trunk tailgate, to help keep things in?
Cool video, thank you
Finally a rig that will be reliable, with no belts slipping or breaking when under load or in water. People who are complaining about the horse power numbers are not taking in the fact that it is going to be geared and not cvt. Honda always has lower power numbers with all of there products for reliability, but let's face it, with a exhaust and different ecu flash I'm sure the power can be dramatically increased. Hope later a turbo is offered along with locking front diff instead of brake controlled crap. Should just leave brakes completely manual with a front to rear bias knob for people that plan to use them for higher speed and race conditions and let owners choose. Sometimes less is more, if you catch my drift. Less electronics!!!
Ya good thinking Honda has always been the most reliable machine but of course everyone now a days what’s the biggest horse power available 😂
Amen!
Honda equals reliable.
The yxz is not cvt? It’s no faster than the Rzr.
Reliable. Honda’s dcts suck ass. We have a rancher with a 1/4 the power and it breaks it’s transmissions all the time.
Looks to be a good looking ride. Like the color.
Specially designed maxxis tires.... That typically just means too cheap for respected and established rubbers off the shelf...
Honda being cheap? Haha not a shot, bud! That’s why they last for decades. And why put expensive ass tires on this when they’re marketing towards the youth with this one, knowing damn well those tires are gonna come off as soon as someone buys it
Very well done 😀
I am impressed by the trans ! Best of both worlds. Very impressive. Come out with a turbo option please
Oh just put a CBR1000 motor in it already.
Mike Yerke not enough low end torque.
Yesss. And it would have plenty of low end torque. It’ll be geared to go 80mph not 180..
Cam it and gear it for the RPM performance range you want. Tuning 101 boys. 🏁
VFR 800 is a great motor in my opinion as an owner
Idaho 308 Great bike and great motor, but you’d be replacing a 100hp twin with a 100hp twin. The CBR with more than 170hp makes more sense. 🏁
honda reliability but did they get 4wd and suspension right
When is tfloffroad going to do a review of some lesser known UTVs, like the intimidator and the Odes Ravager?
I like it!
Looks great to me. I don't need a turbo. My Rzr 900 trail was a blast. This looks killer to me and I like the specs
It’s about time Honda! Now up the horsepower and give us 4 door! You’ll sell a million of them. It nice to have you back on track
Honda rugged.!
any rumors on price ?
Well here it is. Lacking in HP but putting up respectable numbers in suspension and ground clearance.... I’d say for their first dabble in the sport SxS market this is a decent entry!
Agreed
Odyssey 40 years ago was a fun 4 wheeler
I meant lacking in HP as a competitor.... the YXZ has more, wildcat has more, rzr has more and you can get 168+ if you go turbo.... 104HP is the lowest in the sport SxS segment so it’s lacking in HP. I’m saying it’s a good start and likely to be increased over the next couple years but in comparison, it’s lacking!
Pajama Time 104hp is plenty for a side by side. I mean I’m all for speed but honestly this actually looks really good for Honda being they haven’t been in this section of the industry. I’m really excited to see it compare to razr and can am in all aspects because I bet it will give those 2 a run for their money other than top speed.
Wesley Williams Yep I agree.... For their first entry into the segment I think they did good.... I agree 104HP is lots (I drive a Teryx haha) but we all were pretty sure Honda wouldn’t come out of the gate with a turboed engine!! I think this unit will be competitive!
All that's great and all but what is the price????
It will be interesting to see how the dual clutch tranny handles heat. In cars, it’s really hard to keep those dual clutch setups cool. Once they get hot, bad things happen, and it isn’t cheap.
depending on how it's priced, it does seem like some serious competition for the xp1000. I know I would give it thought, but I got that turba itch.
I dont know why everyone is saying lacking in hp???? It has just as much if not more ex. (Maverick non turbo 100hp) as the rest of competition.. U cant compare a NA motor with a turbo! I am by no means a honda guy! But with all the tech out there everyone else is still using cvt systems except honda! This is a great start for a sport sxs and i think will keep up with the rest of the pack who have been building sxs for years!
There are plenty of things that matter more than a 6hp difference
you had people in la to look at this. ya right and most of those pictures are nowhere close to southern california.
How well the dct will hold up is the unknown.
Need locking front and rear
Its sharp. It's just 4 or 5 years behind time.
Surprised Honda has not reintroduce a new pilot from the 80’s! That was cool machine! This side by side is bad ass also!
We’ve got a 13 rzr 570 and a 14 rzr 900xp and they’ve been ran really hard but haven’t had a single problem with either one. And hopefully getting an 18 xp1k turbo here soon. As long as you take care of your shit it will last. Sure there are some bad batches of utvs but same goes for anything you buy.
Did I see air vents in the dash?
This is gonna be good competition for the 1000XP rzr , yxz 1k R and SS,and maybe the turbo rzr
104hp might not seem like much but keep in mind the DCT will get the power to the ground much more efficiently than a CVT so I look for the Talon to keep up with the competition fairly well.
Also several hundred pounds lighter then a rzr
I don’t think it’s several hundred pounds lighter than a RZR 900/1000 XP.
My RZR 1000 Turbo is around the same weight and a CVT puts power down better and more efficiently than a manually selected gear box or an automatic.
No cvt is as efficient as a geared transmission
Kyle Weaver CVTs are always at optimal power output. A geared transmission is only at optimal output at a specific RPM each gear change.
Nice job. I just saw the dirt trax review and they didn't mention anything about a real transfer case(LOW RANGE!), now I want one, before hearing this I would have picked the Yamaha hands down- due to it's pre built, turbo-ready engine!
It has low range
@@morehp1 Awesome! Finally a SxS that's built properly! (Gear driven like ATV's w/ lo range) I've never been a Honda fan, but I think this has huge potential.
Now they need to make a new line of 1000 atvs r like polaris with a highlifter edition line up
104 hp is enough for most people. But it will have to be quite a bit cheaper than the RZR and Can Am turbos. The huge hp market is actually a tiny market, so if it’s priced right they will sell a shitload of them.
I love that Honda has finally made something performance driven. Oh, and NO CVT!
I like this Talon thing
It's about damn time. Anyone complaining about this doesnt know how great this really will be. Non CVT and not a pile of garbage like polaris and canned ham
I'm not going to put down Honda's reliability track record but Polaris and Can Am are very reliable as well. I own an X3 and I wish it didn't have a belt but other than they are smooth and fast. Have you owned either brand you that you are bashing?
@@canamx3americanflag788 I've owned 4 Polaris's, and have seen too many bad things on a can am to try, not to mention not wanting 3 wheel peel and poor clutching. The way polaris lays out their atvs as far as electronics, snorkels, and other things.. sucks. Every maker has their downfalls, but honda simply has far less. I'll take a honda next time I break out my wallet.
@@lucaelli30 man you really have no clue what your talking about. Go ahead and buy that pos and see if you can touch a rzr or canam
Treeinthewoods ok Ricky Bobby!
Canned Ham...lol
Looks like it's built really well. Fit and finish look way better than a RZR. But it's three wheel drive just like the Honda atv's were for decades. Gotta get on board with real, manual lockers Honda!
Super nice I think that I would personally buy a Honda talon over a Rzr XP but the RZR Turbo is hard to beat.
Still a YXZ Fan tho.
mvw
I bet Honda will offer a Talon 1000 Turbo at some point.
Ya that would be awesome!
DaBoogie
So it will cost about the same as a Rzr Turbo. They’re also around that price.
I really hope someone with some power at Honda reads this buts its basically what everyone is saying without giving you direction.
Come out swinging Honda and stop being a wallflower. Build what I say and you'll have people running to dealerships with deposits tomorrow.
Styling - Follow Can-Ams direction and go with a low center of gravity, lay down style frame. Make the frame modular so the front, rear and cage can be bolted off and on or replaced if needed. Frame should all be chrome moly as well as all the suspension links.
Power supply - Must be over 200hp! This is a race inspired car, make the engine a crazy ass screaming beast with a redline of 10-12k. Little duel turbos on the 4 cylinder 1000cc would kick the low end hard but breath big when ripping 12k rpms. Motor should utilize lots of magnesium in place of aluminum when possible.
Transmission - Current tranny is a good start but add launch control and shift point rpm adjustment on the dash.
Differentials - Electric lockers, lockers, lockers all the way around. The differentials need quick gear change capabilities much like Winters race car differentials! This feature alone would be HUGE!
Seats - Real suspension seats from a real seat company.
Tires/
tires/wheels - Aluminum wheels or magnesium and they have to be minimum bead locks on the outside. Both inside and out would be even better. Tires I'd love to see options for. Maybe three choices that best fit desert, mud and all-terrain. Size should be 32" minimum but for this machine 33s would be better.
Shocks - 3" fully adjustable all the way around from inside the cab. Upper shock mount position should adjust ride height by up to 6" with either bracket change, pivot brackets or holes.
Creature comforts - Most people in this segment have in car radios that connect to their helmets for inside and outside the car communications. This ability should come standard or at least make accommodations for it to plug and play.
I could go on and on but that's the big items.
$45,000 you'll have the perfect machine.
@C-Bomb Out west, everyone that has an X3 or RZR that sells for night 30s has another 20k in accessories on it, why not just build what they want to begin with? Most people just finance their lives away, might as well just pile it on the loan from the beginning. That's not how I roll however!
I like it but where's the turbo?
I have the 2016 1000-5 deluxe does fine for us i can 5 to 6 passengers does fine towed Polaris 900 Rzer with of course broken belt
Need that motor in the pioneer!
Turning out to be a great machine...
Really I worked on this project in development stage . I am Way more than familiar with the power plant I'mtalking about appearance
I’m guessing base price of at least $19,999. That coupled with 104 hp is a hard pass for me. Those are rookie numbers. You got to pump those numbers up!
@C-Bomb Not at all. I am happy they came out with it. I love competition! I just think they at least needed to out do Yamaha on the power levels.
HOW MUCH?
Are they ever going to make an STV? That would be cool.
Honda made damn good atv's. I just don't know how it stack up with rzr.
Looks like the cf Moto interior
I would love it only if it’s under 10k lol
Party-of-5 phhhft!
Not a chance Probably gonna be 20k
20k base
you'll be able to pick one up for 10K. A 2019 will run about that much in 2030
I think some of the specifications in this review are wrong. At 2:25 , he states the Talon has a 'Rear Locking Differential'. Other than Polaris's funky 'Turf Mode' feature, ALL ATVs and UTVs ONLY have a spool at the rear - i.e. the rear wheels are ALWAYS locked. Either Stephen is wrong or he is revealing a MAJOR feature which the official Honda reps never even bothered to mention. The same goes for the 'torque biasing front differential'. (the reps. only mentioned the iBrake serving this function)
Technically it's called a 4plus link rears on the R model..
I see this machine being a rzr killer and a canned am eater. For the first year ever this is super competitive!
Everyone saying that it's not going to run with the larger HP machines but what they don't understand is that the Honda will still be on the trails many yrs to come with fewer break downs they are TOUGH AS NAILS..HONDA was the first and only to have a sport utv the Pilot so I'm sure they will eventually add more power
You forgot to mention lots of the engine parts come from the African Twin.
"Here is the real thing." Cue the 80's porn music? All jokes aside thanks for the info. Keep up the hard work and dedication.
I'm definitely waiting for them to make a 4 seater so I can buy it instead of a Polaris
The new Honda side by side needs differential lock Honda's all four-wheel drive works good on the Fly it just needs a differential lock I have a Honda Rincon that don't have differential lock and I wish it had I know you can use the brake control to kick in differential lock but that eventually we'll be hard on brake pads I hope in the future they can improve the Honda Rincon with the 1000 engine differential lock and that's new side-by-side they need to make a differential lock
Finally! Honda does something right!
When are we going to get a sxs with an actual manual transmission? It's half the fun in actual driving.
For the price of one of these and the trailer to tow it (assuming you have a tow vehicle), you could buy a new lower model Jeep wrangler with AC, stereo and protection from the elements.
I know its a Honda and everyone (including myself) likes them but the HP is pretty low. Hopefully the price will be more in range with its HP and be under 17K unlike the Wildcats near 23K.
U.A.T. HP isn’t low compared to the RZR. Only 6HP less. That’s nothing
Honda. Did it again. Nice
Where is a Honda Days when you need one?
I’m not against CVTs, but for the longest time in my opinion I always thought, just put automatic transmission in all SXS. 30k for top level 174 hp SXS and the Honda would out run them in every way. Except for trans replacement cost lol.
Honda bring back a 450 sport quad already!!!
But is it louder than my civic?
Where do you see That it makes104 HP
@C-Bomb lmao ok
Aftermarket turbo available soon
Honda missed the boat on this project. Years behind other makes. Not at all designed for the aggressive driver or race machine. Still looking to purchase a sxs. . Polaris or Textron Wildcat XX
All I can say is > everything is better with a "TURBOCHARGER" -Such a small part of technology with a huge return in performance!!
I can't wait to see what Kawasaki is working on for the sport sxs's
Scott Baker keep waiting. They aren't working on anything.
We'll see only time will tell but it's supposed to be released by 2020. I have already heard from a very good source that they have already bought patents just like Yamaha and Honda did before their machines came to the sales floor.
It needs to be cheap to complete. It definitely can’t go toe to toe with any other unit currently out.
preblewtf xp 1000? YXZ1000? Maverick NA? Wdym???
Why not the f12x engine? Lot of research on that to just be thrown away.
Very cool
It's funny looks just like a RZR!
They need another Honda Pilot please !
Welcome to the game... You're a bit late and a bit under powered but should have a comfortable place behind Polaris and Can Am... Depending on that price you aren't mentioning yet...
Mostly, move over CF Moto, Honda coming through... LMAO!
@@randytaylor1690 The Talon will be way pricier than the CF Moto.. CF Moto is like Kia of the Offroad industry.. Decent enough, but if your being honest you wanted something else HAAHAHAHA!!
Dirt ObseXXion underpowered compared to what? A non turbo RZR is about the same.
@@joeymt3 No, the 1000 is more and the unit is significantly lighter. Plus that front end is a JOKE. Like I said a fancy brick...
@@DirtObseXXion That was my point... Sheesh. It ain't going to catch up to Polaris with this one.
What about a 4 seater
price wil be the key
Links aren’t double sheered in the rear, going to be weak point for sure
it looks like an RZR 1000 XP
Vtec would have been the hail Mary feature
Guarantee its more reliable than a rzr, there no way it couldn't be. My rzr 1000xp has been a pile of shit since brand new.
Russ mt damn that sucks man. My Rzr 900s has been great so far
Honda and the word reliable shouldnt be used like it used to be they are a far cry from the Japanese built machines that gave them this respect. Hint ...pre south Carolina Assembly plant
You are correct, much respect must be given to the japanese for their dedication to outstanding quality, unfortunately american automakers cannot say the same anymore.
I've never had one single problem with mine, 2015 xp1k bought new in 15. 1500 miles
Lol none of them are reliable bud.
Awesome! Now just add a turbo
Um wait.... they forgot the 50" wide model. Maybe next year.
That music in the background....annoying. Great report!
these sxs are great but out of reach money wise for the average guy whose into wrecking the enviorment riding off road..... jmo but these things just cost too much money.... im havin fun on a $500 used 300ex....
Don't think it's going to kill the RZR
